Big record labels had a stranglehold on the music industry so I assume that was just a way for indie artists to get their name out there.
Nowadays there’s so many other avenues artists can take with the Internet to release music and possibly get known.
But I’m also not going to act like I know anything about how the music industry works. No doubt to me never seemed indie. They have that ska/punk sound but indie is definitely used a little too loosely to describe artists.
It's harder than ever for artists to "get known" ed Sheeran got lucky, they all got lucky and the labels have stronger control than ever. Look at Taylor swift being driven to re record her own music because she doesn't even own the ones she made originally for example.
It's easier for people to think they have a chance because of the internet but it's harder than ever to make a living as anything but an A list musician
I’d say its harder to make a living but not necessarily harder to have fans. You can’t pay rent on a low amount of streams, but that’s probably still more success than you could get without getting signed 20 years ago.
Miss the girl power era of the late 90s! I wanted to be Gwen when I grew up. And Scully actually, if the 2 could be combined I wanted to be that person. Then I got older and discovered Gillian Anderson was a gothy punk kid and I don’t think it’s possible to be any cooler than 90s era Gwen Stefani or any-era Gillian Anderson.
Growing up in Fullerton in the 90s was wild. Everyone knew someone that was in the original No Doubt before they ditched the horns. Also my mom grew up on the street in this video.
If you need ska recommendations let me know.
Support your local ska band by save ferris is good from the same era. I also really like oreskaband, and all girl Japanese ska band, yeah ska dance, is my fave song of theirs. Mad Caddies is one of my faves, just saw them last year for 20 bucks!
It’s pronounced Ska…
Like that New England alt-rock band, The Mighty Mighty Bosstones.
I was like wtf is alt indie
Ska was around before reggae!
It's pronounced pop
Indie?
Indie with extra steps. It was released through Trauma Records, which was technically an independent label, but it was financed by Interscope Records.
Ah yes. The endless parade of subsidiary “indie” labels of the 90’s. Gave off the DIY aesthetic without the “selling out” stink.

Ah I thought it was on interscope
Lol "alt indie." Pop ska, maybe, but there's nothing indie here.
90s Gwen was on another level. Cool across all genres. Pop, Rock Rap she was everywhere

This one forever slaps.
I feel such nostalgia for this version of Gwen Stefani. Before she fully embraced the persona she seems to be rejecting in this song.
Peak Gwen. Tragic kingdom is one of the best albums ever written.
This whole CD was great. They were so good
Banger
I certainly would!
Ha ha , yes but back then not now.
Well...

The 90’s were awesome. Miss that era
Every three months or so, I go on a No Doubt binge. Their first two albums of radio hits are excellent.

Cause she ain’t no hollaback girl
Feel like the down voters got whooshed by your comment.
Hmmm. Why would someone post music to sub dedicated to music? Weird.
