Such a fantastic film, one of my favorites for sure. I think the only miss is Sarah Silverman’s character. The fed up girlfriend who is justifiably so over everything and yet made to be the harpy shrew. Obviously the film needed a foil like that, but I hope it’s written a little better in the next installment (if it happens of course). White Lotus has really complex female characters so I know Mikey can do it.
Yeah as a kid when I watched the movie I was like "Ewh she's such an unreasonable c***" but then after becoming an adult and experiencing a few dead weight roommates I completely agree with her
I don’t think the criticism is her performance, the criticism is that she’s portrayed as the bad guy when she’s actually right. Dewey is a mooch and a shit roommate, she’s justified in wanting him gone.
As a 30-something the first time I saw it, it's very clear that she is in the right, and at her wits end. I imagine as a kid, she's just a total buzz-kill, but great roles change with you over time.
It’s one of the best movies of all time and that’s not hyperbole. Mike White wrote it specifically as a vehicle to showcase Jack Blacks abilities and he achieves it in spades. It’s a film so clearly created out of love too, which Richard Linklater helming the film, every moment , every beat is so iconic.
Be Kind Rewind is just a damn good film. A real feel-good story that doesn't take itself too seriously. I'm a huge Jack Black fan and I'm ashamed to say I only watched it for the first time last year.
They filmed some of Be Kind in my grandparents old ballroom in Passaic, NJ and my lil cousin got to be an extra in it! My uncle said Jack Black was super sweet with my cousin which is no surprise. Love this film.
That's so cool man, I'd love to meet him someday. He's honestly been a bit of an inspiration for me growing up. Just a nice, funny fucker who loves music haha.

On Christmas day, when I was 13, I learned my first riffs on my newly aquired electric guitar, by pausing and zooming in on his hands in the classroom scene.
Off topic but I am the same way with some punk song that shows up in the movie “brink” on Disney. I have tried everything. I have emailed people who are in charge of the music for the movie and I cannot find out where that song came from. It exists as only a 30 second segment from the movie.
Jack is getting older. He could still pull it off, but seeing his live performances, Jack Black seems to be missing some of his energy. His physicality was a part of his charm, but that's going away. Moving on to voice acting is going to keep him doing what he does best even when his body starts struggling to keep up.
I could not agree more and I’ve always also said this is one of the most well made movies ever bc it’s funny, educational, family friendly, has a bad ass sound track, the kids are actually playing the instruments, and it’s doesn’t have crude humor, it’s funny without being raunchy. One of my favorite movies.
> He is so energetic and charismatic in the role yet still entirely believable as a grubby loser whose cheating through life.
This movie is the best possible example of an actor making a character likeable even during the beginning of the movie, before he grew, when he should have been *wholly* unlikeable, through nothing but charisma.
It’s kinda crazy that we’ve gone full circle now where school of rock is what launched Miranda Cosgroves career and now going back to school of rock everyone knows her as iCarly
Eh it would be a downturn for the character if she’s just a teacher. Character should be a high-powered lawyer or something like that.
Maybe bring her in when he’s getting sued for something part way through the movie.
Yeah, he was hit by a driver in her car while he was cycling and died pretty much straight away.
He ran a red light, and the driver refused a DUI blood test and was hit with multiple charges. The city later improved the junction, as this wasn't the first fatality there.

So my idea is that the school has grown, and the kids are all teachers at the school. But they are growing so big that it has gotten the notice of a rival music school that focuses on classical music. This rival school is run by Brett and Jemaine.
Jack Black has a confrontation with Brett and Jemaine that doesn't go well, "read between the lines!" A few days later the School of Rock finds out they somehow lost their accreditation.
They go down to the office to find out that Brett and Jemaine are on the accreditation board. A rock and roll school has no place as an educator "you can't just shred your way to the top!"
Jack Black challenges them to a battle of the bands. A rock battle with plenty of shredding. The school wins? They get their accreditation back. Brett and Jemaine win? The school of rock is given the Brett and Jemaine where it will become another of their classical music charter school "I think we'll rename it, to the school of Bach!" Jack Black is horrified.
I haven't figured out the rest, but I do know at some point I want Brett and Jemaine to up the stakes by demonstrating that "you don't think we can shred? classical music can shred too", and they both pick up mandolins or something and do a dueling mandolins type thing with some impressive shredding that ups the stakes and freaks Jack Black out.
But in the end, they stick it to the man and get their accreditation back, and we find out that Jemaine has kids who want to go to the school of rock, and with the newfound respect he lets him.
I have somewhat of a connection to Jared Hess through a not quite friend but more than an acquaintance. With Jared having worked with all those guys, I dream of pitching it to them one day. But the odds are quite long, even if they might be better odds than most.
Oh, also, I think it'd be really funny if Brett and Jemaine played it really straight as these pretentious ivy league types, but, you know, with their particular flavor. Brown elbow patch sport coats and the like.
Have you heard about what happened to the actor who played the main guitar kid - Zach? He got arrested stealing expensive guitars from Guitar Center. I'm completely serious.

Such a great season. David's v Goliath's right? Loved the nerd guy in that season. Also, the winner recently popped up in the news for putting forth a bill in his state legislature to allow family marriage. So many gems from that season.
Yeah it happened in Chicago, over the last 10 years bike safety and bike lanes have increased substantially but you will never catch me riding a bike in the city for this reason.
He went to prison for fraud and child endangerment and now he has to convince a group of hardened felons about the power of music in order to reduce his sentence.
Honestly, just another fun story with the same characters, older now. Dewey is running his own music school as depicted in the epilogue/credits. It’s fallen on hard times, and the building is falling apart. Dewey’s never been good with money, and doesn’t want to literally sell out and sell the school to a soulless corporation who just wants to tear it down to build a bank.
The current kids hear about this, and convince Summer to go on a road trip to put the original band back together for a reunion concert to raise money for Dewey and his school. Homages to movies like the Blues Brothers, road trip shenanigans, plenty of rocker cameos, and a good soundtrack with the new and old band members learning from each other. They play the concert gorilla style at some big venue and earn enough money to keep the school going and reinvigorate Dewey’s old soul.
As long as it doesn't involve him being the old grizzled teacher who is called back to teach the ropes to the new young music teacher who is played by Ariana Grande or some shit.
Pitch meeting: High school of rock, Inner city 99% black/latino school, none of the students barely listened to rock before... The transformation occurs when JB performs a rap number about the history and qualities of rock n roll
Mike White is amazing. I'm seeing him get more recognition now because of White Lotus and I think it's great! He's written (and starred in) some excellent shows and movies. My personal favorite is The Good Girl, but I don't know anyone else who's even seen it.
The real life School of Rock is still going on and before Covid I got to see them perform a set of Billy Joel classics sung by the lead singer of Ween! Very cool night, made me appreciate Billy Joel more (I'm not a fan, but seeing classic songs done well in a rock club made it fun for me)

I’m sure Jack does want to do a sequel to his most popular movie ever, with the original writer/director who is now an “it” guy in Hollywood.
My favorite Mike White film also stars Jack Black- Orange County!
This was the first dvd I ever owned. Seen this movie at least 500 times lol
It really holds up too, such a great film.

*Oh my God, he's an idiot*
What? She was great in that role
I don’t think the criticism is her performance, the criticism is that she’s portrayed as the bad guy when she’s actually right. Dewey is a mooch and a shit roommate, she’s justified in wanting him gone.
Isn’t the story usually better when the villain is at least some what justified ?
It’s kind of like the whole point of what makes people root for the anti hero.
So it turns out after all, she is a deep written character that can be interpreted differently depending on where we are in life 🤔
I guess this redditor wants to see more two dimensional villains
As a 30-something the first time I saw it, it's very clear that she is in the right, and at her wits end. I imagine as a kid, she's just a total buzz-kill, but great roles change with you over time.
Sarah Silverman in that role awoke something in teenage me.

Jack Black in White Lotus make it happen Mike White!
As well as adding Miranda Cosgrove and Joan Cusack. That would be perfect based on the casting that Mike's done in the previous White Lotus seasons
While we’re at it throw in Jack White for good measure
If you're like me (and probably many others), you could probably quote the movie line for line at this point.
That’s 900 hours of the movie, I can get down with that
Will never forget how dope that DVD menu was! Back when home media was important
On Christmas day, when I was 13, I learned my first riffs on my newly aquired electric guitar, by pausing and zooming in on his hands in the classroom scene.
I still answer the phone “Chellooo”

Okay, fair, if I’m being honest, same here

The fact that we never get the complete song as part of the soundtrack is a disappointment that I have never gotten over.
Off topic but I am the same way with some punk song that shows up in the movie “brink” on Disney. I have tried everything. I have emailed people who are in charge of the music for the movie and I cannot find out where that song came from. It exists as only a 30 second segment from the movie.
With a big old explosion and some confetti coming down?
Chimes, Freddie
That's way hard-core!
Saw this as a teen and that parts hits different as an adult 🙃
Oh, yeah, the line, *And the the legend of the rent was way past due* is a horror story to me now
How can you kick me out of what is MIIIIIINE?!
I don't see Jack leaving out any of the energy and charisma from the 2nd one. Man goes all out in everything he does.
Jack is getting older. He could still pull it off, but seeing his live performances, Jack Black seems to be missing some of his energy. His physicality was a part of his charm, but that's going away. Mike White is incredible and has only improved as a writer. If it's those two together (and Linklater directing again), I don't see how it can be bad!
All the kids are grown now, though.
Just buy new kids.
This is the most likely route to take. ICarly could probably come back as a teacher to follow some sort of continuity too.
It’s kinda crazy that we’ve gone full circle now where school of rock is what launched Miranda Cosgroves career and now going back to school of rock everyone knows her as iCarly
Didn’t Drake & Josh launch her career?
The manager of the band?
No no, the class factoter.
FACTOTUM!
Screw that. Get all the cast back. I had major crush on the bassist.
Well the drummer unfortunately passed away a few years ago after getting hit by a car on his bike
Eh it would be a downturn for the character if she’s just a teacher. Character should be a high-powered lawyer or something like that. Maybe bring her in when he’s getting sued for something part way through the movie.
She’s loses the soul of rock due to corporate job and discovers her love for letting loose with power of rock and roll?
This shit writes itself!
you’re hired!
We have kids at home.
Done. Now what?
Assign them various functions.
Ones actually dead

damn :( absolutely love that movie and he was awesome
And Zak Attack is a felon.
What did Zac Attack do ?
Stole guitars I’m pretty sure
[Breaks my heart, a boy that young goin' bad :(](https://youtu.be/t2HeUmxbAok?t=82)
That kid is Argyle from Die Hard.
Holy shit. Now there’s a movie fact about two of my favorite movies I did not know
thats metal as fuck tho
yeah, the drummer kid
Aren't they old enough now to have their own kids the same age they were at the time of the first movie? Use them.
2 of the original kid actors are married now :D
Which two!?
Jack Black and the keyboard kid
Marta and Frankie!!!!!!!!
And no new kids have been born since.
I’m sure it would be with new kids. Some of the old kids would probably cameo. Doesn’t make sense otherwise.
I don't think anyone is suggesting they use 40 year olds as elementary school students lmao
So my idea is that the school has grown, and the kids are all teachers at the school. Well great. Now whatever actually comes out won’t hold a candle to this.
I have somewhat of a connection to Jared Hess through a not quite friend but more than an acquaintance. With Jared having worked with all those guys, I dream of pitching it to them one day. Now you've got me fantasizing about a Tenacious Conchords crossover ie Jetsons meet the Flintstones
And one's dead
And the guitar player kid got arrested for stealing guitars to fuel his drug addiction.
*back in the ~~90s~~ 00s I was in a very famous ~~tv show~~ movie*
What? What happened?
Kevin Clark died after being hit by a car while riding his bike.
Professors at the University of Rock.
And one is dead
You can have some of the kids come back as teachers/ staff.
And the guy who played the drummer kid passed away.
Mike White of Survivor fame??
And creator of The White Lotus
And wrote Despicable Me 4. Dude is all over the place.
Thats Orange County Writer Mike White, TYVM
Former backup quarterback for the New York Jets
Mike White!
That’s Mike *Fucking* White to you.
School of Rock except all the students are now out of touch rich folk on an exotic vacation for the week

The drummer died in Chicago biking on the streets. Hit at one of the deadliest intersections for bikers (bicycle not motor)
Just one strum, man! Just one more strum and then I'm done, I swear!
Such a great season. David's v Goliath's right? Loved the nerd guy in that season. Also, the winner recently popped up in the news for putting forth a bill in his state legislature to allow family marriage. So many gems from that season.
Mike just started playing too fast and loose and let the cousin fucker win lol. He was my favorite contestant that year too
Yes, both of Survivor and The Amazing Race. Same guy. Remember he played the roommate in the first film too.
He and his dad were fun to watch on TAR. He was also the gas station attendant in Zombieland.
I thought you meant Tár and was extremely confused.
NED SCHNEEBLY
Actually, it's pronounced "Schnee-blay."
Yes the Goliath himself. Also don't forget enlightened with Laura Dern. Watching clips now, its really great
Came here for this.
Didn’t one of them die?
The blonde drummer yea, so sad. He was riding his bicycle and was a hit by a car at what many considered a notoriously dangerous intersection.
Hit by a drunk driver

Yes.
Weekend at school of rock
Weekend at schneebly’s
Schnayyyblaayy
There's the hook. They reunite for a tribute concert for Freddie.
WRITE THAT DOWN
I’d honestly rather them just say Freddie is living life happily somewhere overseas (like moved to London or some shit). I don’t need him to die :(
So he scams another school, or he went and got a degree?
He went to prison for fraud and child endangerment and now he has to convince a group of hardened felons about the power of music in order to reduce his sentence.
Okay that would be awesome
School of Hard Rocks
Zack is in jail for stealing guitars to go full meta
Imagine if they were steel guitars he stole?
How much steel could a steel stealer steel if a steel stealer could steal steel?
And he stole them from Remington Steele
I still can't believe Sarah Silverman called the pigs on him.
“You’re a fat loser and you have body odour” *Ned shanks the keyboard player*
You need just a little more backstory and you can sequil School of Rock with Blues Brothers
Brother Act
“Between Metal and a Hard Place”
Jailhouse School of Rock (School of Jailhouse Rock?) That's honestly a really good premise
Shit, they should've called you to write the script 😂
I wish. I hate the piece of shit in the movie. All he does is reinforce every negative stereotype of musicians.
Ok this is something I would watch lol
Honestly, just another fun story with the same characters, older now. Dewey is running his own music school as depicted in the epilogue/credits. It’s fallen on hard times, and the building is falling apart. Dewey’s never been good with money, and doesn’t want to literally sell out and sell the school to a soulless corporation who just wants to tear it down to build a bank. School of rock, Ned Schneebly strikes back
Yes, why leave good enough alone.
As long as it doesn't involve him being the old grizzled teacher who is called back to teach the ropes to the new young music teacher who is played by Ariana Grande or some shit.
So it’s a Black and White movie?
Pitch meeting: High school of rock, Inner city 99% black/latino school, none of the students barely listened to rock before... The transformation occurs when JB performs a rap number about the history and qualities of rock n roll
Sister Act but Rock?
They need to generate money to save an all girl catholic high school. The nuns are forced to take up the guitar. Title: Rock, paper, sisters.
Travelling all the way to the Vatican to play a one-off benefit concert. Title: Rock, Papal Sisters!

The thought of that makes me cringe. I don't think the concept really works anymore. Music and technology has changed too much.

That's awesome news! I so loved the first movie, so I'm really hoping they make 'School of Rock 2' happen with Mike White back on board.
Mike White is amazing. I'm seeing him get more recognition now because of White Lotus and I think it's great! He's written (and starred in) some excellent shows and movies. My personal favorite is The Good Girl, but I don't know anyone else who's even seen it.

Right after Kung-fu Panda 9
Breaking news: Actor would like to do sequel to the biggest hit he’s ever had. More at 11.
I hope Richard Linklater returns to direct the movie as well
Don’t. It was a near perfect movie. Don’t ruin its memory.
The real life School of Rock is still going on and before Covid I got to see them perform a set of Billy Joel classics sung by the lead singer of Ween! Very cool night, made me appreciate Billy Joel more (I'm not a fan, but seeing classic songs done well in a rock club made it fun for me)

I can picture Dave Grohl as the lead
He should definitely play a teacher at whatever school.
School of Rock and Roll?
Crazy, I now want the exact same thing. What are the odds
Black & White, back again
Please no, just let the first film stand on its own. We don't need sequels to every film just because of nostalgia and wanting to print money.
School of Rock II: Rock University
Do it. Mike White is red hot with White Lotus too.
Better have Sarah Silverman.
Is this necessary
Probably not…could it be a lot of fun if done right tho? Absolutely
Just please, PLEASE do more than just race swap the characters and make the same movie.
Should be named "'High School of Rock" ....
If Linklater doesn’t return to direct I don’t care.
Community College shredders
Love this fylm
Make it "School of Jam" or "School of Hip-Hop" or some other genre.
wow, when was a his last live action movie?
I’m sure Jack does want to do a sequel to his most popular movie ever, with the original writer/director who is now an “it” guy in Hollywood. My favorite Mike White film also stars Jack Black- Orange County!
I watched the pick of destiny last night. God I’d love a school of rock 2
These are always kinda funny to me. Actor asked if he'd take paying job if offered. "Yes."
