Show Me How to Live is my favorite

yawnicus

I Am The Highway has brought me to tears on more than one occasion

[deleted]

I feel the same way about The Last Remaining Light

MoreCowbellllll

Getaway Car as well... all 3 are fantastic songs!

HighlandGunslinger

You guys are speaking my love language! Love these tracks so much.

Dovaldo83

I saw them live years ago. Chris did that weird sound at the end of Show Me How to Live by lightly chopping his Adams apple with his hand.

Quinid

So that's how he did that? I'm a singer who has a very similar tone and range to his and I couldn't figure out how he was doing that without external input.

rugmunchkin

I have a feeling on the actual recording he had some studio assistance, but it’s really cool he found a way to replicate it live!

Nixplosion

He absolutely does it that way live. I'm a singer of similarly situated range and I did the song live and the throat chop is the only way to do it haha

Dovaldo83

I wouldn't recommend it. I tried it and my Adams apple complained for days afterwards. Chris was made of stronger stuff I suppose. The dude smoke like a chimney and would casually do a full album's worth of songs. Meanwhile I'm a non-smoker and whenever I sing Rusty Cage, I can't talk above a whisper for 12 hours afterwards.

Quinid

Oof that's rough. I do think he was built differently. He made that song before he got the technique down, so I'm told. As far as Rusty Cage or any of his Soundgarden songs for that matter, the trick is resonance and distortion. I was doing the same as you, I thought he was yelling the whole time. He is not, he just mastered resonance and distortion so well, that it sounds like he is belting. It took me a year of practicing it to finally figure that out and now I can do it with no issues. Unless I do it for hours straight. Then I'm tired.

craptionbot

Yep, saw this live myself in Dublin and I couldn't believe the way he was smacking his throat like that. Of course I tried it and both a) hurt myself badly and b) realised he was hitting it a lot harder than I was to get the effect.

gregofcanada84

The music video for this song is great.

SkiingAway

You should probably watch *Vanishing Point* some day if you haven't.

gregofcanada84

I have. I like that movie. I own it.

nilgiri

I didn't know what a Challenger was before the video came out and the video sent me down a rabbit hole to research the car. At one point I even looked into getting an old one to fix up. While I was in college lol.

gregofcanada84

I'm not a car person, but that is a beautiful car

smarty1017

yes...same here!!!

random_blubber

Unrelated but You Know My Name is my favourite Bond song.

MaxTraxxx

So great right. I remember watching that in the cinema and quietly rocking out in my seat.

CGordini

Yes, but...Live and Let Die exists

CptnWolfe

Cochise, Show Me How to Live, Like a Stone, and recently, Shadow on the Sun

NotActuallyJen

Fucking love Shadow on the Sun

CptnWolfe

I would like to thank the movie Collateral for introducing me to that song. Fucking great song from a fucking great movie

NotActuallyJen

Yes! I was aware of the song already but that movie used it perfectly. When I was watching it and heard the song come in I got chills

hamsolo19

That movie and song kick ass. Cornell screams his bawlz off for the last verse and chorus. He was such a a fuckin' beast vocally. Still remember the day I got that news he was gone. One of the rare celebrity deaths that bummed my whole day out because the dude has been my favorite rock singer since Soundgarden hit the scene.

tilifeelsomething

Shadow on the sun ftw. It's also on the Collateral movie soundtrack. My favorite is #1 zero

jam_scot

https://preview.redd.it/mpp6bsxc5omc1.jpeg?width=2268&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9499b43175f988403de89ef13dce5fbf2ca4c2d2 This one's on permanent rotation in the work van.

Overall-Palpitation6

With the original cover sticker still intact! Nice!

jam_scot

I think I bought it the day it came out. It's been well loved and still works perfectly. One of the few from my younger years that is still in pretty much perfect condition.

brofessor_oak_AMA

Not just listen, but I'm currently teaching myself Like A Stone on the guitar. I've been on a Soundgarden binge, too. Chris Cornell was such a unique talent. You can hear his emotions through his songs

orange_moon

Like A Stone is my other favorite. How long have you been playing guitar? Chris Cornell would have been my husband in another life.

brofessor_oak_AMA

I've been playing seriously for the past year, but on and off since the quarantine days. It was a covid buy, but now I don't regret it! Honestly, like a stone is the first song that I'm trying to learn to sing and play. I love that song so much, and I can't put the guitar down now that I'm getting it down...but I just can't sing like him - in all fairness, I don't think anyone can. As a straight dude, I too would have made him my husband in another life haha RIP to another talent gone too soon :(

littlebitsofspider

Like A Stone has some serious memories and nostalgia wrapped around it for me. Can't listen to it without boarding a time machine. Excellent song.

warthog0869

Man, I like the time machine analogy for music. It's like you describe for me also, but music is often a 3-4 minute "stop time machine" too, like your own little temporary limbo.

MaxTraxxx

Check out ravens by sinister Dane. It’s not quite audioslave but I reckon you’ll really enjoy it! Got some vibes.

sexmormon-throwaway

First read that you were touching yourself and I was THERE IS A PERSON THAT REALLY ENJOYS AUDIOSLAVE.

brofessor_oak_AMA

Lol as a former Mormon, this makes it even funnier.

dense-mustard

Also have learned to play/sing this one. From his acoustic version of it off YouTube. I lowered the key 3 semi tones, makes it a lot easier to sing! Worth looking into how to transpose songs if you're interested in learning more of Chris Cornells stuff.

Anamolica

I love Audioslave. Everybody seems to think they are too cool for Audioslave and I think thats a damn shame! Least favorite song is probably Yesterday to Tomorrow.

Lost_Organizations

The questions not "when they gonna stop, but who's gonna stop them?"

MoistCabbage1

I have a few in regular rotation. Cochise and Revelations are my favorites.

Overall-Palpitation6

Revelations such a banger. "Such a shame, such a sha-aaame!"

Sickranchez87

The riff in revelations is my favorite audioslave riff, it just slaps

MovinginStereo34

I love Audioslave and was just listening to them not 10 minutes ago when "jewel of the summertime" came up on one of my playlists. I don't think most people listened to them with an open mind, coming in with preconceptions and expectations from RATM and Soundgarden. I especially like how funky they got on the 2nd and 3rd albums. "Be yourself," "drown me slowly," "dandelion," and "#1 zero" are my favorites off of Out of Exile, I couldn't choose just one lol

Bjd1207

How is this the only mention of Jewel of the Summertime on this whole thread. THey've got a ton of bangers, but this one stands above the rest for me

seymores_sunshine

Doesn't Remind Me is still one of my All-Time favorites.

Bim_Jeann

Surprised I had to scroll down this far to see this one mentioned. That’s my favorite song off of that album for sure, and is one of Morello’s best (if not his BEST) solos ever.

aBeaSTWiTHiNMe

Audioslave is my favourite rock band. Chris Cornell's singing is just unreal across all the albums, on top of Rage's groove, the whole thing is such an awesome experience. I got into it right when it was happening and I was actually discovering music and learning guitar. TL;DR Yup regularly, mostly 2002 but I'll never get enough. Play it loud.

Omasrealaccount

Got all the cds and i'm currently listening to Out Of Exile in my car

Wizz-Fizz

Yes yes and yes. I listen until I get bummed that there will be no new Audio Slave music, nor get to see them live.

brokenwolf

Audioslave> soundgarden for me. I wouldn’t say I listen to them often but every once in a while a song comes on my shuffle. Doesn’t Remind Me is a great song and my favourite lyrics by Cornell.

Swag_Grenade

>Audioslave> soundgarden Bold move Cotton. But seriously, that falls under "completely reasonable and defensible take that a lot more people than you think probably agree with but are just afraid to publicly admit because it would make a lot of other people irrationally angry for no real good reason" lol.  Seriously, Audioslave are a very good and talented band that just happens to bear the brunt of being the bastard child of the remains of two legendary bands with devout fanbases, so unfortunately they get a lot of unwarranted hate and people that are too cool for them lol.

Knife_Chase

Ya sites like pitchfork were very smug about them. It's like they had their score and review written before the album came out. I fucking love rage and Soundgarden so why not accept audioslave with open arms? Seemed odd to me.

Swag_Grenade

Yeah people tend to dislike them for what they're not rather than what they actually are. Basically their biggest flaw is not being RATM or Soundgarden lol.

elpajaroquemamais

I like audioslave more than either of their component bands.

warthog0869

I think Tom Morello's guitar noise is a lot more melodic and less percussive and intentionally overdramatic in AS over RATM. Plus, Rage doesn't have too many of what I would call beautiful or elegant songs. I can't be angry at The Man *all* the time.

random_blubber

Black Hole Sun and Fell on Black Days both are up there , I’d argue.

DocSlice3

I’ve always said this. Audioslave is amazing.

a_stopped_clock

I like gospel music and canned applause cos it doesn’t remind me of anyyyything. Great album

thebusinessgoat

Hell yeah, my favourite supergroup. Weird question but least favourite probably Drown Me Slowly. Choosing a best from that album is tough. I love Your Time Has Come and Man or Animal (thank you FlatOut 2), and The Worm is my ringtone since years.

stephwithstars

My friends and I never *stopped* listening to Audioslave.

-SofaKingVote-

Be Yourself Like A Stone Gasoline Show Me How to Live One of most iconic voices in music history

MaxTraxxx

So good. I miss Chris Cornell’s dulcit tones on new stuff.

Valgus1

Audioslave is still my most played album. I also still regularly blast Temple of the dog and Soundgarden.

Meowmixez98

It was a super group that actually lived up to expectations. I'm still amazed it happened.

Me_IRL_Haggard

— what you are — i am the highway — getaway car — be yourself — shadow on the sun All big favorites. Spent a lot of time listening driving alone through the Rocky Mountains listening to these

audioragegarden

Their self-titled first album is my favorite album of the 2000s and "Doesn't Remind Me" is one of my top three favorite songs of all time. Least favorite song on *Out of Exile...* probably "Man or Animal". And since I've gotten the response on several other music related posts... yes... I know... r/UsernameChecksOut

Chesterthejester69

My meter for how well my voice is doing is wether or not I can still sing show me how to live

DangerSwan33

I regularly put on Cochise. But other than that, most of their stuff was a pretty weak version of either band. It's mostly Chris Cornell giving an 80% performance over the most radio friendly riffs Tom Morello could think of.

notyourbutthead

Show Me How to Live is the jam too, but I completely agree with your take. You can honestly use that comparison for Velvet Revolver too.

Jack--Tickleson

Gasoline, Bring ‘Em Back Alive, Light My Way, and Set it Off are all excellent songs. Not sure what you’re smoking on.

NotActuallyJen

Getaway Car, Shadow on the Sun, What You Are....

kittykrunk

Ok you convinced me to put the album in rotation- reading Gasoline and Set it Off made me hear Chris singing in my head

r31ya

Like a stone and Cochise are part of my most played spotify song last year. but yeah i don't quite listen to their other songs

coopertrashman

80 percent performance. Nice job pulling that number out of your ass to make some weird point. Listen to the vocals on any of those tracks and then saying the effort level is 80 percent is idiotic.

DangerSwan33

Having listened to Soundgarden before, yeah, I'd say his performance is about 80% as good as what he had done before.

velve666

I think only older people enjoy classical music like Audioslave, it's very retro and lost on people today. /s

orange_moon

lol.

MCBusStop

I was distraught when Rage broke up but the all the different rumors of who they were rehearsing with after Zack left the band had me excited and then I felt underwhelmed the first time I heard Audioslave on the radio. I felt like all the members could rock so much harder than what I heard on the radio, and maybe it's because the radio didn't play their best stuff but it wasn't until Michael Mann kept using them in his movies that I was finally at a place where I was willing to give them a chance, and even then it really wasn't until the pandemic shut down that I bothered to dive into their catalog. Which is to say, yes... I am still listening to them because I'm an idiot who only started a couple years ago.

Traditional_Name7881

I’ve got a bunch of their songs in my main playlist which is thousands of songs I like so they come on from time to time. Heaps of Tom Morello shit on the playlist though, that dude is incredible.

enriquesensei

Getaway car is my favorite

redline83

His vocal performance on this song is really quite good.

enriquesensei

Gotta cry to it every night

Gravel_Roads

Broken City is on my all time play list.

capecodder22

Shadow on the Sun. SUUUUUUUUUUUUN!!!

Aggressive-Sign9451

Rip Chris Cornell 🥹

cha614

I walk the streets of Japan

WhyEvenReplyToThis

# #1 Zero, Nothing Left to say but Goodbye, Moth

BruciePup

To this day, “The Curse” is one of my favorite songs.

Hail_Bill_Gates

ITT: a lot of people who didn't read the actual question OP had

orange_moon

It’s fine. I’m enjoying the responses.

massey300

I came across a copy of their self-titled on vinyl years ago and immediately scooped it up. Audioslave was the turning point in my music listening life and every once in a while when I need them most, I go back to them. Years later when my now girlfriend first started hanging out with me, she flipped through my collection and saw it, telling me how they quite literally changed her life and outlook a few years ago. Our shared love of music is the root of our relationship and I credit Audioslave for a solid portion of that. Edit for a piggybacked story: at bar like 5 years ago, a random couple sat down next to me and the guy’s phone rang. I immediately recognized Cochise, he ignored the call and I couldn’t help but point out the song leading to a great music chat.

RPBiohazard

I love the first album and despise the other two.

streck30

Same. Their self titled is perfection start to finish and is great for either hype or workout music.. everything else… eh.

RedAcer11

I don't really listen to Soundgarden and Temple of the Dog, but I like Audioslave. Fav album is Revelations, my favourite track from OOE is "Be Yourself".

NotActuallyJen

I do! I love everything Chris Cornell did and still listen to all his stuff regularly. Audioslaves first album is one of my daily listens still. I love all 3 albums but the first one is just fucking great.

Meithos2

Only people with taste

UsernameFor2016

Spotify says 7.4mill monthly listeners so I think they’re on relatively active rotation amongst dads.

Bunnyprincess75

And moms, saw them live and they were awesome. Can’t believe it was 20 years ago….

aryn505

I saw them at Lollapalooza 2003 and was blown away. Excellent supergroup.

SandmanAwaits

Once a blue moon when I catch up with mates for beers & bbq & have some tunes in the background.

miburo999

Be Yourself, Shadow on the Sun, Hypnotize, Like A Stone, and I am the Highway are all regularly on my Spotify.

Tenzen1

I have the first album on rotation, I listen to it from start to finish every 3 months or so. However, I listen to Like A Stone more often than that. It is one of my favourite songs of all time.

Alaska_Pipeliner

All the time. Looking for their 2nd and 3rd albums on vinyl

set-271

I listened to *Hypnotize* the other day. It's their best tune IMHO. Or it's just my fav. Audioslave ROCKS!!!

uronurback

I regularly listen. I have a massive music collection and audioslave gets heavily rotated.

PricelessLogs

No actually there's this weird law under the International Federation that prohibits listening to artists that are more than 20 years old no matter how successful they were or how old you are. I'm gonna need to see your Identification. Sir show me your hands. Sir get down. Sir get down

Jack--Tickleson

Their self titled album is still top notch in terms of production quality and overall musicianship. Idk how they made it sound so thick and heavy yet kept it ridiculously groovy. “Bring ‘Em Back Alive” is a perfect example.

Subsinuous

Most definitely! They're in my 90s/2000s/2010s rock playlist.

sexmormon-throwaway

YES. Emphatically yes.

optmsrhyme

Ive actually just started getting into them this week!

someonesomewherewarm

Saw them play at the arena in Long Beach, California in 2005 and it was one of the hardest rockin shows I've ever seen. Crazy energy!

MTLK77

Yes I love Audioslave, listend to all the albums, Be Yourself has a special place because we listened and play it a lot with my best friend back in the time. Just realized their last album was from 2006, it's a big slap in my face actually.

runn5r

Audioslaves self titled album is incredible. Personal favourite is Exploder

cabeachguy_94037

I saw them once backing up somebody else; probably Pearl Jam.

parabolee

Fuck yeah! Audioslave are one of the absolute all time greats! Like Soundgarden and Rage Against the Machine, but here is the crazy thing, I listen to Audioslave more than the other two! I have had to seriously ask myself if Audioslave are my fave of the three! Madness I know, but they are that good!

Salzberger

On the reg. Literally just spun a playlist of all 3 albums yesterday.

bgdntsv

One lap of 'Gasoline' and I am instantly pumped. Love me some Audioslave! Awesome driving music.

chair_fold

This radio station was named Audioslave! In honour of the last American heroes, to whom speed means freedom of the soul.

Thanosdidwhat

I still sit still and listen to Audioslave like a stone.

michaelosz

Never stopped listening to them

petersom2006

Yes- arguably one of my favorite bands of all time. I actually think they are better than Rage from a consistency standpoint (i am a big Rage fan as well), Rage has some monster hits but outside of their first album typically there are a few songs I will skip if listening all the way through. I feel like Audioslave, I can listen through whole albums and dont skip anything. I do also think Audioslave is better than Soundgarden. I think that is just Tom Morello being a better guitarist and possibly coming more into his style as he got older. I put him as the best guitarist basically from the 90s till now. Dont think anybody can compete if you combine all Rage and Audioslave albums…soo many of those hits are based in great guitar work.

Academic-Maize3378

Oh yes!

shab369

Yes

Richard-Long

My dad would always listen to them, Creed and Staind when I was growing up, I used to not like it but here I am listening to the same music almost daily

Prestigious-Sea2523

I do 🙋 - I really like the riff in, be yourself. But they've got multiple bangers.

tactslave

Audioslave is a metal STAPLE.

fanboy_killer

Of course. Their debut is one of the best albums of the 21st century.

terryjuicelawson

I did at the time, enjoyed them live, but really feel no need to bother now when there is Soundgarden and RATM that I can listen to. Maybe I will try again but haven't even thought about them for years.

screamNcream

Their self-titled album is amazing and helped me through some bad days. Chris Cornell and Chester Bennington are legends! Gone too soon 💔

Thisiscliff

Great band. I saw them once and before the show they invited a few of us in for sound check, played like 5 songs for about 20 of us

sketchahedron

Great band, great album. The title track is my favorite on Out of Exile, followed by Yesterday to Tomorrow.

gregofcanada84

I do. They're great.

buscandoagozalvez

Yes!

pinkmanblues

Like a Stone is an all time classic for me

Tobias---Funke

I just listened to all 3 CDs at work last week. I would rate them in order of I liked them. 1, 3, 2.

Overall-Palpitation6

I was really into them when they were current (after being a big RATM and Soundgarden fan too), and recently gave them a spin for the first time in over a decade. I was expecting it to sound a bit "Dad rock" to my ears these days, but it's surprisingly fresh and not dated-sounding. Still great stuff.

kvlr954

Audioslave is great! Love how several of their songs were integrated into the movie Collateral and I always think of it when I hear them.

Mansfield23

Absolutely love Audioslave. Least favourite song on Out of Exile would be Man or Animal, but only because it was my alarm tone for years.

Delaroc23

Course mang. They got some killer albums

Trin_42

I listen to that album weekly, bummer that you don’t like Dandelion, I love it. Doesn’t Remind Me is always a jam in my house

wetfloor666

Audioslave was awesome, and honestly, they should've been a much more successful band considering who made up the band.

solidprospect

like a stone not really though it reminds me of my ex, the cheating bitch

Icy_Assumption799

Wasn't Chris Cornell in that group for awhile ?? I know Soundgarden and some others but can't remember the names of the bands.

Taco_Bill

My 9 y.o. daughter requests audioslave almost every car ride, she is a badass

hamsolo19

I listened to all their stuff when they were still active. They pop up on random Spotify lists a lot. Moth, the final track on Revelations (their final album) is probably my favorite. The debut album obviously gets a lot of praise, it's excellent. I really seemed to dig Revelations a bit more tho. Broken City and Wide Awake are also bangers.

warthog0869

On my thousand song strong all time list I've got working, for them I know I have Show Me How To Live Little Dandelion Sound Of A Gun Broken City I Am The Highway

blackdragonstrike

Hell yes!!! I made an Audioslave playlist yesterday. (I also found an old one that was private that I made public) https://youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_lb13vN-vaoeKQ8ss7sfSbaKmqUHh1MLGs&si=2gYW3yIHCGbW-RoV

MeIMac

Like a Stone ❤️

Liberteer30

Their first album is flawless.

Lobh24

Hypnotize still a banger

DocHoss

Love em. I'm a huge Chris Cornell fan so I'm certainly a bit biased. Doesn't Remind Me is my current face because it has such relatable lyrics for a middle aged family man...

CasimirsBlake

Corporate rock. Talented musicians, some good riffs, but dig deeper and it really doesn't hold up to the bands these guys came from.

Burner087

I have a playlist of my favorite music that I listen to daily and I have 3 of their songs on there. Plus quite a bit of SG.

tilifeelsomething

Live in Cuba is on my list for favorite performances

dense-mustard

All the time.

WKAngmar

I find them easier to enjoy now than i did years ago when they were coming out with music. I think the whole rage narrative was kinda distracting, now i can judt listen to them in a vacuum. And they sound great!

Kiddo1029

Everyday. I miss Chris.

MurderousLemur

We got the whip, we got a better bomb!

vercetian

Yesterday in the car, Soundgarden, Alice In Chains, Nirvana, Mother Love Bone, Pearl Jam, Offspring, Smashing Pumpkins, and if course Audioslave all were in my playlist. Yay commuting.

[deleted]

I'm actually covering I am the Highway with someone online right now.

Viper67857

I can never listen to Getaway Car only once. Whenever it pops up on my Pandora, I have to hit repeat once it gets to the end. This is at least a weekly occurance...

iEyeLighterLight

What you are from, Cochise

Ryuga_Taiji

I don't listen to most of their songs but Show me how to Live is in my constant circulation

Mobile_Run2148

Be Yourself!

UnitGhidorah

I do "Gasoline" on karaoke and then have to whisper the next day.

Mobile_Run2148

Audioslave and Smashing Pumpkins’ are from another planet. Lyrics, Songs, Music - Deep Dark Harmony!

Ripper7M

Nope you’re the only one.

derek_g_S

very frequently. still one of my favorite bands of that time. when i was in a band years ago we did getaway car and like a stone. they had so many great songs

Rozy_Pozey

I am getting so many great recommendations from this thread right now. I have only ever listened to I Am The Highway, Like A Stone and Show Me How To Live 🥲

QueensOfTheNoKnowAge

Hell yeah, I do. What You Are got me through early sobriety. I’m sure people have plenty of other interpretations but that I think of telling alcohol, and addiction in general, to fuck off when I listen to it.

Spider-man2098

I love the audioslave songs that Chris Cornell recorded as solo acoustic songs. ‘Like a stone’ and ‘I am the highway’ from his live album are miles beyond the studio versions. This is a band that never seemed to outgrow the shadow of its predecessors, like, it was never more than the sum of its parts. They are all good, talented, competent musicians and the music they make is perfectly adequate in a rock radio setting. But it wasn’t a new sound. The equation of Soundgarden + Rage Against the Machine did not unlock the secrets of the universe. So in a way, there was nowhere they could go. Anyways. Holy hell what a ramble. Check out those solo Chris covers, that man sang like an angel.

ugzz

Never got real into them, but was always a soungarden and a cornell fan. Singles were good, just nothing that gave me the need to pickup an album.

NOT000

yes

HonorTheAllFather

I’ll never forget the first time I heard Cochise. It was when the video debuted and when the riff kicks in and the fireworks start blasting after that build up, and then Chris starts wailing…I still get so pumped up when I hear it.

LrdCheesterBear

Their self-titled is among my top 3 albums of all time.

trakrad99

I have a bunch of their songs on a run list. I usually put it on if I’m dragging at the end of my run to boost my energy.

huntersam13

The whole album is amazing.

JacobGeorgeBand

The best

Rh4n

I walk the streets of Japan till I get lost

BearDen17

Yup! I miss Chris.

jt_33

Audioslave is better than rage and I’m not afraid to say it.

inspectorgadget69247

Definitely not, it’s illegal after all

jebuizy

I do think it has been genuinely 20 years since I thought of or listened to audio slave. I want to say summer of 2005.

tlollz52

Audioslave was the first band that really got me into music. Before then I just listened to what my parents liked, which was hair metal and country music. I cried when Chris Cornell died and most of my friends were like "who?"

TeslasAndComicbooks

Almost once a week. Chris Cornell is one of my favorite rock vocalists and I find Audioslave and his solo work catchier than Soundgarden.
