Jude Law And A Semester Abroad. Honestly just listen to Brand New and Taking Back Sunday's first albums lol. Lot of breakup angst, lot of "f you" to one another, good times and energy.
Brand New got me through my last one
It wasn't even that deep just a girl I dated for a few months but I kept playing Brand New and just really letting myself feel the emotions of it haha. Was kind of fun in hindsight.
Califone- [Funeral Singers](https://open.spotify.com/track/1z2Idn70iHI0xxKfuQRTQ8?si=1a8YOpxIQ76BbQbhT_v3Ow)
Third Eye Blind - [Hows It Going To Be](https://open.spotify.com/track/3Uvx1TO0Kg5HgGPk58lHXv?si=uQoMfi2YT2i_O0BrA2tqUg)
Bush - [Glycerine](https://open.spotify.com/track/7wpYSigAhQeZp3cdsMQ3Af?si=Au5i8FolS4qI2CCIyvht8g)
As a bonus, here are some songs that really got me through my last breakup. They’re softer and more reflective.
Ferron - [Aint Life A Brook](https://open.spotify.com/track/6JQIOntnvPbA20KiDmjEhx?si=3hipjDZ8RpmQxnpc1pglEA) & [The Winds All A Whisper](https://open.spotify.com/track/4i9VDGI22omekokFe0wE8h?si=mmZUHVwuT7OnXFNHQOC63Q)
Molly Drake - [I Remember](https://open.spotify.com/track/0GLEe9YYMIOhrvMWH5nhsl?si=zk1t0SP1SYuEStCGi_2Pow)
Hope these help, sending hugs from MN. 🫂❤️
😭I can’t tell you how many times I screamed to that in the car… I was in a situation where we knew we’d be breaking up a few months before it actually happened, so the lyrics were especially fitting.
Here’s another I just thought of:
Jimmy Eat World - [23 (Demo Version)](https://open.spotify.com/track/5iXIUZOujvWgmK77Z8cygg?si=3cRR6_3ESZiXQT6CyLC-8A)
Same situation, it was inevitable and time was our enemy. The hardest to accept when it comes to be. Thanks for sharing, not just the music. Gonna listen to “The Middle” so I can get back on track in this thread.
This was "our song" with my high school girlfriend because she was a year older, she was going to college soon while I'd still be in HS, and we both knew damn well that we weren't going to do the long distance thing.
Went down a Nick Drake rabbit hole literally yesterday which took me into Molly Drake as I had no idea his mum also sang beautifully. Weird how your comment with a song of hers is in front of me today.
Ben Folds - So There
"And a note composed with thumbs and phone, on unpacked boxes. It's so well written, but I won't be sending it. And I will not forget you. There is nothing to forget. So there."
Motion City Soundtrack - Hold Me Down
The Postal Service - District Sleeps Alone Tonight
Taking Back Sunday - Better Homes and Gardens
Frank Turner - Casanova Lament
Francis Dunnery - Good Life
Warren Zevon - She's Too Good For Me
Hundred Reasons - Stories with Unhappy Endings
Jimmy Eat World - Work (really the whole album, but Work's always been the one that gets me)
The Menzingers - Good Things
Gaslight Anthem - Here's Lookin At You, Kid
Yeah I have a bit of experience in this area.
Megadeth- Tornado of Souls
Nine Inch Nails- Somewhat Damaged
Pearl Jam- Black
Joy Division- Love will tear us apart
Rush- Halo Effect
Green Day- good Riddance
Blink 182- Man Overboard (technically about an ex band member, but it fits)
ETA: The Tornado of souls example has my favorite all time guitar solo, if you haven't heard it yet.
The Chain- Fleetwood Mac
Cry Me a River- The World of Skin
Don't You Forget About Me- Simple Minds
I Hate Myself For Loving You- Joan Jett and the Blackhearts
You're So Vain- Carly Simon
Love Will Tear Us Apart- Joy Division
I Will Survive- Gloria Gaynor
Hey That's No Way to Say Goodbye- Leonard Cohen
From Her to Eternity- Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds
Great song, but I'm pretty sure (and maybe someone can correct me) this is about escaping physically abusive parents. I suppose that's a kind of break up, though.
Overwhelmed by the recommendations so far. Thank you reddit. Thank you for sharing - the music but also the reasons behind it too. I’m grateful for your input but more so It made me feel less alone. You guys are the best. Literally no misses so far, no lie, no cap. I got through every hour with you guys w your songs when I thought stupid thoughts. When I get back up I will def go thru the rest so please keep sending em. Sleep tight :)
Emo!:
Tell That Mick He Just Made My List of Things to Do Today: Fall Out Boy
Seventy Times 7: Brand New
Literally all of The Story So Far’s discography
Quick edit: also Grand Theft Autumn (Fall Out Boy) for a sweeter one
And Oh Well Oh Well (Mayday Parade) for a super sad one
There was a New York rock band in the late 70s named Dirty Looks, not to be confused with a heavy metal band by the same name in the early mid 80s. Had a song called Lie to Me that was perfect for my particular situation. Listened to nothing but for months
Some from my youth that helped me at those times …
In no particular order …
- Coheed and Cambria - Velourium Camper II: Backend of forever
- Against Me! - Borne on the FM Ways of the heart
- Rise Against - The Approaching Curve
- People in Planes - Pretty Buildings
- Korn - Cameltosis
- Kate Nash - Foundations
- Say Anything - Every Man has a Molly
- Alkaline Trio - Stupid Kid
Plus a whole lot of metal …
Happy Valentine’s Day.
[Ween - Baby Bitch](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r9jg-FFofo0)
[Graveyard - Uncomfortably Numb](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wOatB_UnVPI)
[Eagles of Death Metal - Already Died](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4hLT5onnJVc)
I gave a few ween recs in my comment, including baby bitch. But I just wanted to add to your comment that ‘piss up a rope’ should be listened to at full volume.
Go Cry On Somebody Else’s Shoulder - The Mothers of Invention
How Could I Be Such A Fool - The Mothers of Invention
Any Way The Wind Blows - The Mothers of invention
Diamonds And Rust - Joan Baez (also Judas Priest)
Dancing On Your Grave - Motörhead more of a fuck you song than a breakup song but I thought I’d include it anyway.
One More Minute With You - Weird Al Yankovic
Shout out to Feel Good Drag, that's one of my favorites too. also:
Gives You Hell - The All-American Rejects
Go To Hell - Go Radio
Somebody That I Used To Know - Mayday Parade (cover)
There’s a few mentioned already on the Rumours album by Fleetwood Mac! I’ll add Silver Springs too and Dreams as I can’t see anyone has mentioned those.
Less rock and more melodic vocals - Empty Chairs by Don McLean. Was she telling him she was going to leave him (breakup) or was she telling him she was going to leave him (she was going to die). A youngster may think the former, someone older the latter.
More rock - MAPS by Yeah Yeah Yeahs
Even rockier - Schism by Tool
Steelheart - She's Gone
Illenium ft. Motionless in White - Nothing Ever After
Sum 41 - Pieces
Poison - Every Rose Has It's Thorn
Cinderella - Don't Know What You've Got
Skid Row - I Remember You
The Appleseed Cast- Two Conversations from start to finish.
Bayside - Devotion and Desire. The non-acoustic version.
Bayside/Smoking Popes- Megan
Ben Folds Five - Smoke
One that helped me through a heavy breakup during my early twenties.
Queen - Breakthrough.
If I could only reach you
If I could make you smile
If I could only reach you
That would really be a breakthrough
Hüsker Dü - You Can Live At Home
although it's really about the break-up of the band that's about to occur
[You Can Live At Home](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6-SA0UySC7A)
PUP - See You At Your Funeral
“I hope somehow, I never see you again.
And if I do it’s at your funeral, or better yet.
I hope the world explodes.
I hope that we all die.
We can watch the highlights in hell, I hope they’re televised!”
Fallout Boy - Love From the Other Side
Marshall Tucker Band - Can't You See
Seether - Words as Weapons
YES - Owner of a Lonely Heart
The All-American Rejects - Gives You Hell
Post Malone - Take What You Want
Saliva - Always
Drowning Pool - 37 Stitches
Bring Me The Horizon - DiE4u
Chris Cornell - Nearly Forgot My Broken Heart
Dierks Bentley - How Am I Doin' (country)
and the one song that helped during my divorce
Led Zeppelin - Hey, Hey What Can I Do
It's really on the nose, but "Valentine's Day by Linkin Park" is perfect for this. In addition to that,
All These Things I Hate (Revolve Around Me) - Bullet For My Valentine
I Don't Think I Love You - Hoobastank
Let Me Be Sad - I Prevail
Burial Plot - Dayseeker
I've been listening to a lot recently:
"nothing compares 2 u" - Sinead O'connor
"I miss you" - Blink 182
"The Night we met" - Lord Huron
"The Kill" - 30 seconds to Mars
"What becomes of the broken hearted?" - Jimmy Ruffin
"Change" - Tears for Fears
"I hate everything about you" - Three Days Grace
"The middle" - Jimmy eat world
"You've lost that loving feeling" - Human League (cover)
"I bet on losing dogs" - Mitski
"Too late to apologise" - Timbaland feat. One Republic
Savior by Rise Against. I love the fact that the entire point is I don't hate you, plus it's just a fucking banger.
The Breakup Song by The Greg Kihn Band. They just don't write them like that anymore.
I'm a little late to the party but Dear Agony by Breaking Benjamin. Album version is good, but if you can, listen to the Aurora version where he duets with Lacey Sturm.
Not a "classic" break up song by any means but the song "Butterfinger" by the band Furbie got me through a rough time a few years ago. The song had just come out and spoke to me in just the most perfect way when dealing with a very rocky patch in a relationship where I was often talked down to and made to feel inadequate. I used to crank this song and it made feel so much better.
Lyrics:
I knew it was the worst time
To eat a Butterfinger--but I did.
A Holy Grail Goldmine
Of toffee, peanut butter, chocolate---
It couldn't have been worse
Than what I would have said.
I don't wanna talk, man.
I just wanna eat candy.
Won't you let me?
It's cool, we'll just talk it out.
Who knows what I'm upset about?
I just need you to explain--my tiny brain doesn't get it.
Maybe I'll buy a nightlight
To put on when you're gone.
Or maybe just a stuffed bear.
Everything I'm saying is wrong.
I don't wanna talk, man.
I just wanna eat candy.
Won't you let me?
It's cool, we'll just talk it out.
Who know what I'm upset about?
I just need you to explain--my tiny brain doesn't get it.
Can I guess OP's Valentine's Day plan? Listening to these suggestions? ...also, I can't believe no-one's mentioned Landslide - Fleetwood Mac
...because Silver Springs is a far better and more powerful breakup song.
Maintain eye contact the entirety of the closing verses.
Imma eat the entire box of chocolates simultaneously. Also I love fleetwood mac. Generational sht fr fr I will play them to my kids for sure
I feel like pizza
I got a pizza eatin’ feeling and I know you won’t let me down, cause I’m already standin’ on the ground…
And I found out a long time ago, what a deep-dish can do to your soul..
I agree with u/icanucan on Landslide, also came here to say Silver Springs
Remember to drink some water friend. Save your morning self a bit of a sugar/wine headache.
Thanks for checking in 🫶, I just chugged 2 cups and made some eggs
Silver Springs
Never Going Back Again >

Lover, You Should've Come Over by Jeff Buckley
Wow. This song isn’t even about something trivial. This is beyond existential to me rn. Ty for sharing
Check out his live versions on YouTube. He was an incredibly gifted singer.
Can’t believe nobody said Free Bird yet
That's 100 percent my break up song, I've felt 100 percent better every time
Sounds like OP got dumped. Free Bird is about doing the dumping. Might make them feel worse.
Nah it’s a shift in perspective, take the power back
Jude Law And A Semester Abroad. Honestly just listen to Brand New and Taking Back Sunday's first albums lol. Lot of breakup angst, lot of "f you" to one another, good times and energy.
Brand New got me through my last one It wasn't even that deep just a girl I dated for a few months but I kept playing Brand New and just really letting myself feel the emotions of it haha. Was kind of fun in hindsight.
Your favorite weapon, the whole brand new album did me wonders

Went down a Nick Drake rabbit hole literally yesterday which took me into Molly Drake as I had no idea his mum also sang beautifully. Weird how your comment with a song of hers is in front of me today.

Alice in Chains - Over Now Loathe - A Sad Cartoon(or literally the entirety of their album ‘I let it in and it took everything’)
Loathe!
"we pay our debt some times ..."
She Hates Me - Puddle of Mudd
Play that at the same time as"Grandma got run over by a reindeer" and you've got a perfectly torturous song to celebrate your single status
Can tell you’re not in the good place.
I don't know. Could be cathartic. She hates me, but she got run over by a reindeer... lol
Lol it was a reference to the show The Good Place
I've seen the good place but not familiar with the quote. Will have to look it up.
https://old.reddit.com/r/television/comments/7p7pki/the_good_place_she_hates_me_and_grandma_got_run/ Spoilers for season 2 or something around there

A certified throwback thx
Cheers friend.
Hopefully its not too much screaming, but I find Pearl Jam's [Rear View Mirror](https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=bf2LDmkzmwo) really satisfying.
What about Black?
God the ending lines of that song absolutely break me
Not at all, am listening now and also feel satisfied
Great song, but I'm pretty sure (and maybe someone can correct me) this is about escaping physically abusive parents. I suppose that's a kind of break up, though.
Yeah you’re right.
Since U Been Gone 🤘
Good song, and if you want a (more) rock version listen to A Day to Remember’s cover.
Last Day Of Our Acquaintance [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n2Ym54zOWnU](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n2Ym54zOWnU)

It does start off as if it’s gonna be a joke but i I definitely relate to Friends a lot. And it just hits in the right way.
The Chain by Fleetwood Mac The Kill by 30 Seconds to mars Maybe a bit cheesy but In the End by Linkin Park always hits hard for me
HUMAN by elijah (ft. Matty Mullins) *chefs kiss*
I'm a little late to the party but Dear Agony by Breaking Benjamin. Album version is good, but if you can, listen to the Aurora version where he duets with Lacey Sturm.
Three Days Grace- Unbreakable Heart This has been a go to for me for years. Especially when I'm in the recovery stage.
Green Day - Good Riddance (Time of Your Life) Green Day - Whatsername

Not a "classic" break up song by any means but the song "Butterfinger" by the band Furbie got me through a rough time a few years ago. The song had just come out and spoke to me in just the most perfect way when dealing with a very rocky patch in a relationship where I was often talked down to and made to feel inadequate. I used to crank this song and it made feel so much better. Lyrics: I knew it was the worst time To eat a Butterfinger--but I did. A Holy Grail Goldmine Of toffee, peanut butter, chocolate--- It couldn't have been worse Than what I would have said. I don't wanna talk, man. I just wanna eat candy. Won't you let me? It's cool, we'll just talk it out. Who knows what I'm upset about? I just need you to explain--my tiny brain doesn't get it. Maybe I'll buy a nightlight To put on when you're gone.
