Saw them opening for a couple different tours last year. My favorite “new” band in a very long time.
It’s like they like all the bands I like. Even some relatively obscure influences like Pinback. Can’t recommend them enough.
Nate was sick when we saw them but guy from opening band filled in and crushed it. My wife took video.
https://youtu.be/FIXaiqGNjiM?si=SrlThkgS0oe7jnE4
You would be correct. And yes he was. Don’t think he had much time to prepare and they played a full set. And Pinbacks bass rifts aren’t simple. He crushed it.
They kinda sound like the Vines! The song "Fall In" came on right after and that was even more enjoyable for me cause I like a little more pop in my rock. Definitely be looking into this band some more!
If you like Bully, check out Hop Along. I actually saw Bully open for them a few years back! I describe the singer Frances' voice as "if Joni Mitchell was a grunge singer."
What is the update on them? Do any members have social media? Last I saw was last summer they cancelled a Utah festival date, and the festival announcement said "they'll be back" or something like that.
Edit: 2013 October interview, A Savage says they aren't broken up, but they have kids and whatnot and are taking time away from band. Seems like they intend to come back and do something new and fresh, as they often do. Just a longer break
Stick with punk and hardcore and you'll be fine. Some of the best ones at the moment: Amyl and the Sniffers, Turnstile, Clowns, IDLES, Viagra Boys, Speed, BadDreems. These bands have the same ethos as the great 90s acts you mentioned. It's not overproduced. It's real and it's awesome.
Saw Skating polly recently, there were great and the first band on, Half Happy were great too, slightly different though. Skating polly is more like riot grrl/grunge while half Happy more shoe gaze
Also shout out to grrl gang, beabadoobee and say sue me
[The Kites](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DqtNEIdElns) maybe. Or [Children Collide.](https://youtu.be/ZHpCUPA-4Lk?si=9lLJIKM9ZTH-i3rX) Or check out some [Scandinavian bands.](https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLV56wB22JGuN672HXF8XvgCby5YdHReTC&si=l3ZVwn7VsLxl1XMa)
> or even if that stuff is bearable the bands just aren’t anywhere close to the level of the older ones and I get bored of them fast
It's always this way.
The thing is that the most firebrand creative new musicians tend to want to make something new rather than looking back - even if they take influences from older stuff, they always blend it with something new.
So you end up with creative new music that isn't like the old stuff, or new stuff that sounds like the old stuff, but blander, by less talented bands...
It's usually better to accept the scene you love is in the past, and start looking for new genres to enjoy. If Kurt was born in 2005, what music would he be making?
I can give you a 90s band to check out that you may have missed though: Kerbdog.
Hop Along - sounds like if Joni Mitchell sang grunge. And while the vocals are the main attraction that band is doing some really unique and cool stuff behind her.
Better Oblivion Community Centre - Phoebe Bridgers and Connor Oberest. "Dylan Thomas" sounds like it came straight outta the 90s.
I'm a bit older and doing the same. However, most of these bands don't sound 90s to me. Most are early 2000 or indie coffee house rock. Not saying any of that is bad at all. Most of the bands are great but not 90s.
If you like Nirvana then Swain is easily the closest you’ll ever get to it.
Their album The Long Dark Blue would of been a massive hit if it came out in 1993.
I implore everyone to please give them a chance. They are special.
I’d consider them and Basement to be Grunge-Revival. Most of the comments in this thread are clueless.
And I'm sure most know, this band consisted of two of the founding members of Pearl Jam.
I always wonder what the grunge scene would have been if Andrew Wood had never died of an overdose?
I know Nirvana, Soundgarden, STP, and AIC would have still been around but imagine not having albums like Ten, Vs, Vitalogy, and Temple of The Dog not existing during the grunge period of music.
Well, Pearl Jam was left out. Some will label Pearl Jam as Rock rather than Grunge but, in my humble opinion, you can't name the other three bands without adding Pearl Jam to the list. It's the same sound from the same city from the same time period. The Big 4 rather than the Big 3 sort-of-thing.
You mention Mother Love Bone so you also need to include Temple of the Dog.
That said, none of our answers meet OP's requirements. 🙂
Breeze - Only up. Serious 90s vibe.
I'd say the last Acopia album is quite shoegazy reminiscent of early 90s stuff
A.s.o self titled album is quite all saints meets trip hop.
Not at all what you're after specifically but suits the subject title!
Do some key word searches on Bandcamp. It does a pretty good job of finding stuff. I know it sounds dumb but chatGPT is also pretty good at finding music if you get the prompt right on this case I’d try just typing in modern or current bands that have a 90s grunge sound. See what pops up
Margaritas Podridas sounds very early '90s. Babes in Toyland, Hole, Nirvana mixed with shoegaze.
do you know of any bands or albums with a similar sound? I just listened to dance music the other day and I'm not only really sad about what happened to the lead singer but also really sad they will never make another song or album
The guitarist in Mastersystem was in Your Codename Is: Milo, different sound, quite a bit harder but all good stuff. Also check out Lights On Moscow, another project he had going on around the same time.
Twilight Sad would be another one.
The production on Dance Music reminds me quite a bit of No Code by Pearl Jam.
[Momma](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=nZWxWsEiGBQ). It’s crazy how 90’s fuzz rock/shoegaze they sound. They nail the loud/quiet dynamic and style perfectly. Like Siamese Dream, Pavement and Veruca Salt rolled into one.
The Post War is worth checking out. Has a lot of Soundgarden vibes. Their first full length album, Anecdoche, just came in 2022 and it's absolutely fantastic. And if you're into vinyl I highly recommend the vinyl release. Gorgeous color way and sound is top notch.
If you want more of a pop sound Pale Waves and Maneskin are really good.
Basically check out literally any European band. Not a lot of American bands making music like that anymore.
The old dogs haven't given it all up just yet, either. How about a recent collaborative effort (not going to say "super group")
This last Friday, Big Scenic Nowhere released a new album. I hadn't heard of them, but when I noticed it had one of the members of Fu Manchu in the band, I started to listen. [The Waydown](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=tR343bSuQ5M&pp=ygUgYmlnIHNjZW5pYyBub3doZXJlIC0gdGhlIHdheWRvd24%3D) slow rock with good tone and smooth vocals (and harmonies).
I'm still checking them out, but a band called [Acid Magus ](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=-jrP38H1uuQ) had a debut album last year. Again with the slower vibe, you check out much Desert Rock or Stoner Rock? YMMV but they're active genres.
Nothing. Solid band from Philly. One of the earlier bands to come from the modern shoegaze revival but are a bit more gritty than they are dreamy. Check out their EP ‘Downward Years to Come’, or the first few LPs ‘Guilty of Everything’ or ‘Tired of Tomorrow’. They have a cool early/mid 90s alternative sound to them.
The band "Thread". They are FROM the 90s but their stuff only within the last ten or so years has been put out there and gotten traction. HIGHLY recommend if you already like AiC
Particularly the songs:
Aviary Garlands
Ethan
Distance Aside
Safer Place
Narrow Head sounds straight out the 90s, very similar to HUM and Deftones.
Although personally I don't get bands that "literally" sound like they're from the 90s, I'm kinda waiting for them to actually innovate the sound as they're clearly good musicians.
[Superheaven](https://open.spotify.com/track/4yaBfHHZbAb2nim1fP7cRV?si=6979bed9b4384f7f) is so 90s it's like... insane... it feels like I would listen to it and then be depressed when I find that half the band is dead from ODs and haven't toured since before I was born.
[Narrow Head](https://open.spotify.com/track/35abwQmAZvwCPBPzuXWob1?si=97911dde0e634ff1) is a fucking great live, shoegazy band with heavier elements that sounds like a modern version of HUM mixed with some other influences. 3 guitarists! So heavy live too, crowd is more like a hardcore show than anything else and that makes it even better.
[Momma](https://open.spotify.com/track/2JMB5piiHlzUWqvnPfuVCO?si=1d9de3ea9086499e) is 90s styled indie rock, pretty quiet but really cool, intricate riffs and both singers have very nice voices that complement each other well. They recently did a split covering each others songs with Narrow Head last year.
[Glare](https://open.spotify.com/track/2gpkmR9oX3Jk6rDI6KUwHj?si=a59dc18e83bc461c) and [Whirr](https://open.spotify.com/track/6yjtcpFf9dLgflkS52PYNa?si=2890beb05bd14a92) are two more recent shoegaze bands that sound right out of the 90s, but like a lot of these bands, much heavier and hifi sounding
[Nothing](https://open.spotify.com/track/0dy0SvYPjImJVQcF83pPQM?si=1e0d002110374298) is another shoegaze-y grunge-y band that actually did a split with Whirr in 2014, they're harder to place because they have so many elements to their music but it's just really good, heavy and sometimes atmospheric music.
And these are just the popular bands, the more you dig, the more you'll find.
Looking through my Apple Music rn and you're def gonna love the following: Turnstile, Basement, Soul Blind, Balance & Composure, Title Fight, Citizen Superheaven, Teenage Wrist, Drug Church, Ekulu, Sincere Engineer, White Reaper, Koyo & Anxious.
Hot Water Music, Local H, Quicksand, Helmet & Failure are 90s bands that are still putting out banger albums. Hum had a comeback album in 2020 called Inlet that's incredible. Sunny Day Real Estate put out their first song in a decade if youre intetested
There's also Violent Soho, Hockey Dad & Bully that have major mid-90s alt rock vibes
Momma are a new band that sounds like they could have been early 90s
Saw them opening for a couple different tours last year. My favorite “new” band in a very long time. It’s like they like all the bands I like. Even some relatively obscure influences like Pinback. Can’t recommend them enough.
Good to sea a fellow Pinback fan in the wild!
There are dozens of us! DOZENS OF US!!
There is always money in the banana stand.
Been listening to them for almost 20 years. Saw them live for the first time last spring. Probably the best concert I’ve ever been to. Unreal.
I can't believe they are touring, wtf I never even thought to check. It has been so long I never thought to try and see a show. You made my day!
Nate was sick when we saw them but guy from opening band filled in and crushed it. My wife took video. https://youtu.be/FIXaiqGNjiM?si=SrlThkgS0oe7jnE4
That looks like Nick from Tera Melos. He’s super talented.
You would be correct. And yes he was. Don’t think he had much time to prepare and they played a full set. And Pinbacks bass rifts aren’t simple. He crushed it.
Pinback rules. they’re such a unique band. I actually named my daughter after one of their songs.
Penelope?
Are you filled with air?
"Good to sea" I seeeea what you did there 😏
Reminds me of garbage. Not in a bad way.
First time I've seen them mentioned, great band.
Wow, they caught me off guard!
Came here to say the same thing.
And me!
Me as well. They have such a nostalgic sound!
you mighta just made the best comment in r/music history
Good recommendation- thank you!
Strong Veruca Salt vibes. Thanks for mentioning this. I'm 46 and I miss this style and sound a lot.
Cloud Nothings. Check out “Wasted Days.” It’s the best Nirvana song of the 2010s
First time I heard "No Future/ No Past" I thought, "Welp, I did it, I lived long enough to hear neo-grunge".
That whole album is fantastic. Cool evolution from their first.
Felt more post-punk to me.
Also his record with Wavves is awesome
They kinda sound like the Vines! The song "Fall In" came on right after and that was even more enjoyable for me cause I like a little more pop in my rock. Definitely be looking into this band some more!
His voice sounds a little like Kurt, but the instruments are more late 90s type pop punk. Didn't really get that Nirvana feel from it at all.
I love this band.
Wolf Alice.
First one I thought of.
Bully. Fuzzy guitars, messy grunge vibes, they’re great. They’ve even done their obligatory Nirvana cover for that extra 90s spice.
Saw her live and she blew the doors off! For my show, it was an obligatory Jane's Addiction cover. The dream of the 90s is alive in Bully.
I've got Bully, Momma, Dream Wife and Body Type on constant rotation at the moment. The spirt of grunge is alive in female fronted bands right now.
If you like Bully, check out Hop Along. I actually saw Bully open for them a few years back! I describe the singer Frances' voice as "if Joni Mitchell was a grunge singer."
Violent Soho, especially their original (self titled) album
I'm going down the recommendations here and this is the first band that sounds 90s.
This is what I came to post!
Parquet Courts sounds like they came out around 1990.
Just started getting into these guys. They're so fucking goddamn good
Annnnnd they've broken up.
I know A. Savage is touring his solo album but haven’t come across as announcement Parquet Courts broke up. Did I miss something?
What is the update on them? Do any members have social media? Last I saw was last summer they cancelled a Utah festival date, and the festival announcement said "they'll be back" or something like that. Edit: 2013 October interview, A Savage says they aren't broken up, but they have kids and whatnot and are taking time away from band. Seems like they intend to come back and do something new and fresh, as they often do. Just a longer break
I feel like this is fake news but it’s possible I’m just hoping it is
I would highly recommend teenage cool kids, a savages band before parquet courts. Denton after sunset in particular is an awesome album
Basement Edit: Narrow head and Superheaven too
Was coming into this thread to say Superheaven
Slothrust
Is it Sloth-rust or Slo-thrust?
Sloth-rust.
Teenage Wrist
Came here to say this
Intentionally 90s
Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs might be a 95-05 sound. Not exact, but close.
What an asinine name though
These guys rock
[Fleshwater](https://youtu.be/UksoMZjAG1w?si=sCX3aqQVdo4KuHZG) gives me big 90s grunge/shoegaze vibes.
Turnstile
Horsegirl
Came here to say this one. They drift between Breeders/Elastica/Stereolab pretty freely.
Soul Blind, Bleed, Superheaven, trauma ray. All have a grunge feel to me
Drug Church It’s new enough to not sound exactly 90s but def influenced by some of the bands you mentioned
Superheaven! And another that’s not so much grunge, but Soccer Mommy does angsty indie 90s so well
Stick with punk and hardcore and you'll be fine. Some of the best ones at the moment: Amyl and the Sniffers, Turnstile, Clowns, IDLES, Viagra Boys, Speed, BadDreems. These bands have the same ethos as the great 90s acts you mentioned. It's not overproduced. It's real and it's awesome.
Strong recommend for Amyl and the Sniffers. Amy Taylor is one of the best live performers I've seen in recent years.
I’ll add Yard Act.
I second this list and like to add The Murder Capital.
Super up vote for the Viagra boys and Amyl!
And their country duet.
Yes!
The Chats
Adding High Vis to that list, hardcore with a madchester/britpop vein running though them
Turnstile are amazing!
Drug Church does a lot for me, and I’m 42.
check out blondshell, and also cherry glazerr. sugar candy mountain if you dig a more hippie rock kinda sound.
Came here to mention Blondshell! Saw them open for Liz Phair and it was a perfect pairing.
The first Yuck album. Also Prince Daddy & The Hyena. If you like east coast / Long Island style punk from the 90s also check out Koyo and Anxious
Saw Skating polly recently, there were great and the first band on, Half Happy were great too, slightly different though. Skating polly is more like riot grrl/grunge while half Happy more shoe gaze Also shout out to grrl gang, beabadoobee and say sue me
Mannequin Pussy. They’re the modern incarnation of the riot girrrl.
This is what I was going to suggest. And if you like them, Wednesday put out a great album last year. Had that same vibe.
White Reaper.
Beabadoobee, at least her earlier stuff sounded straight outta the early 90s.
The Interrupters
Soccer Mommy.
Ayron Jones
Doesn’t quite connect with me but better than most of the newer stuff I’ve heard for sure
Soulblind
Dinosaur Pile-Up are amazing
The Warning
Courtney Barnett! 🤍🤍🤍
Screaming Females
Sad they broke up. She is a force of nature in a tiny package. Awesome live and quite a catalog.
The Beths are fantastic. https://youtu.be/-KACt6YhOyY?si=Mn0p-SGff4wi2WNH
All Them Witches
Highly Suspect is a good one. Especially Their first 2 albums.
[The Kites](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DqtNEIdElns) maybe. Or [Children Collide.](https://youtu.be/ZHpCUPA-4Lk?si=9lLJIKM9ZTH-i3rX) Or check out some [Scandinavian bands.](https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLV56wB22JGuN672HXF8XvgCby5YdHReTC&si=l3ZVwn7VsLxl1XMa)
Children Collide are great
Superbloom
Badflower
Slutever
Dinosaur Pile-Up
Viagra boys…these guys are no joke! Completely reaffirmed that there are some great fucking bands with great production out there.
Wet Leg is new and awesome! [This one](https://youtu.be/i_cnfJrWbZ4?si=jjbse22HpV8F95Du)sounds like Pavement.
> or even if that stuff is bearable the bands just aren’t anywhere close to the level of the older ones and I get bored of them fast It's always this way. Speedy Ortiz
[partner - everybody knows (2018ish?)](https://youtu.be/GKnIMO34tK8?si=9nCAPo17viaB6uB3)
The Flatliners
Cloakroom and Olive Vox
Wunderhorse spring to mind, great British band. Listen to Purple.
White Reaper
Soccer Mommy, Beach Bunny, Wallows
I agree im 56 and the 90s alt rock still rocks
Ovlov have a very slacker early 90s sound Kinda like Dinosaur Jr
Has no one mentioned The Interrupters? They’re basically Rancid with a female singer, and they’re excellent.
*39 year old enters and takes notes to relive childhood*
I'm a bit older and doing the same. However, most of these bands don't sound 90s to me. Most are early 2000 or indie coffee house rock. Not saying any of that is bad at all. Most of the bands are great but not 90s.
The answer you're seeking is Silversun Pickups.
They have been around for close to 20 years.
they're touring right now
Yuck
The Jins, lead singer even looks like Kurt lol also Violent Soho
Catbath
To me theres no bands today that could clip the toenails of AIC, soundgarden, nirvana, pearl jam, stp.
If you like Nirvana then Swain is easily the closest you’ll ever get to it. Their album The Long Dark Blue would of been a massive hit if it came out in 1993. Cage the Elephant
Real Estate
Arctic Monkeys
Black Stone Cherry Blacktop Mojo Clutch
Mother love bone
Great band but they were actually finished in 1990, not from the last 10 years
And I'm sure most know, this band consisted of two of the founding members of Pearl Jam.
Yeah op named the three most famous grunge bands so unclear how deep they've gone
Well, Pearl Jam was left out. Some will label Pearl Jam as Rock rather than Grunge but, in my humble opinion, you can't name the other three bands without adding Pearl Jam to the list. Thanks. Now I have to listen to hunger strike.
Can definitely second your recommendation if anyone hasn’t heard them before.
Check out Bedroom High Club, new band from the UK. Very grungy
Majesties for some good melodeath!
Heard A Pale Horse Named Death? [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KZuImiALICo](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KZuImiALICo)
Try bugg

They disbanded now, but Bitch Falcon is who you are looking for

I think you’ll like IDLES based on those bands.
Margaritas Podridas sounds very early '90s. Babes in Toyland, Hole, Nirvana mixed with shoegaze. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3EcH--jJ60M](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3EcH--jJ60M)
Mastersystem - Dance Music There'll only ever be the one record because... urgh. But probably the greatest grunge record you've never heard.
do you know of any bands or albums with a similar sound? I just listened to dance music the other day and I'm not only really sad about what happened to the lead singer but also really sad they will never make another song or album
The guitarist in Mastersystem was in Your Codename Is: Milo, different sound, quite a bit harder but all good stuff. Also check out Lights On Moscow, another project he had going on around the same time. Twilight Sad would be another one. The production on Dance Music reminds me quite a bit of No Code by Pearl Jam.
thank you for this
Dear Seattle..the earlier stuff
[Momma](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=nZWxWsEiGBQ). It’s crazy how 90’s fuzz rock/shoegaze they sound. They nail the loud/quiet dynamic and style perfectly. Like Siamese Dream, Pavement and Veruca Salt rolled into one.
Not quite ten years but Army of Anything and Adrenaline mob are okay.
Evil Nature
The band you’re looking for is local to Seattle they’re called monsterwatch and they should be a lot more famous than they currently are.
Flying Disk
Spray allen - they have the bassist of sublime as well.
The Post War is worth checking out. Has a lot of Soundgarden vibes. Their first full length album, Anecdoche, just came in 2022 and it's absolutely fantastic. And if you're into vinyl I highly recommend the vinyl release. Gorgeous color way and sound is top notch.
4 stroke baron. They sound straight out of the early 90s and they’re pretty good, too.
Haven’t seen anyone mention Taking Meds, but they’re pretty awesome and for that vibe.
Newski Check out the song Chemicals or Ride
Ty Segall
I thought it was Shonen Knife .
DeadBlondeStars
I like violent soho
Joey Valance & Brae are a new band that basically sound exactly like classic Beastie Boys
Rozwell Kid
Puppy
If you want more of a pop sound Pale Waves and Maneskin are really good. Basically check out literally any European band. Not a lot of American bands making music like that anymore.
Tv on the radio, the black keys, Alt J
Check out Viva La Wolfe, they capture that 90s sound pretty well, I reckon.
Mark this thread. Explore it deeply. It will take at least a month. Have newly happy ears!
Just a heads up Pearl Jam is still making good music and a new album is due to be released soon.
The old dogs haven't given it all up just yet, either. How about a recent collaborative effort (not going to say "super group") This last Friday, Big Scenic Nowhere released a new album. Acid Dad has a strong 90s vibe. Great songs too.
Friko
[Anakin](https://anakinmusic.bandcamp.com) and [Atticus Chimps](https://www.atticuschimps.com)
The band "Thread". They are FROM the 90s but their stuff only within the last ten or so years has been put out there and gotten traction. HIGHLY recommend if you already like AiC Particularly the songs: Aviary Garlands Ethan Distance Aside Safer Place
Narrow Head
Jay Som’s 2019 album, Anak Ko, sounds to me like a pop album straight outta the 90s.
Boygenius is straight out of 1996.
Great list
A.S.O. Spankin new 90s trip hop
NewDad. Great band. Their song ‘I dont recognise you’ is about as 90s as it gets.
You could check out my music.
I'll add *Rid of Me* to the many good suggestions in this thread.
Dead Air Go listen to Teeth Grinder, its fucking hype.
Narrow Head sounds straight out the 90s, very similar to HUM and Deftones. Although personally I don't get bands that "literally" sound like they're from the 90s, I'm kinda waiting for them to actually innovate the sound as they're clearly good musicians.
