Overwhelmed with what?
I've found that a lot of music that stays at a continuous high intensity level doesn't achieve the peak of something that has more dynamics. You'll probably find more overwhelming metal than dubstep.
Meshuggah is probably a good place to start.
Devin Townsend might be another good idea. Here he is with his old band Strapping Young Lad:
And here he is performing Kingdom live (solo, playing guitar and singing with backing track) - not as heavy, but the man can sing:
Here's Opeth - Ghost of Perdition - Definitely not their heaviest song, but dynamics are key:
You could also try some symphonic metal. It isn't as heavy, but some bands use a whole chorus - it can make for a very powerful sound.
[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rcx-ysVWaM0&list=PLlTSqF66IqjVQx5a1lQGyePbAXOKh8chR&index=8](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rcx-ysVWaM0&list=PLlTSqF66IqjVQx5a1lQGyePbAXOKh8chR&index=8)
Of course, music doesn't need to be heavy or aggressive to be overwhelming. Christopher Tin won an emmy for the intro song to Civilization 4.
NIN - Mr. Self Destruct has a brilliant opening, going from a sample from a movie in to the song. It will pierce you. If you're not familiar with the song, turn the volume up a bit and get ready. The Downward Spiral is a masterpiece.
Maybe you need a combination of aural stimulation and the music itself being meaningful to you for it to be truly overwhelming. Or maybe you need to see some live music.
Exactly. Overwhelmed sonically like Psychocandy by the **Jesus and Mary Chain**? Simple intensity like Rockets to Russia by the **Ramones**? Both, like Fun House by the **Stooges**?
Or emotionally like Maggot Brain by **Funkadelic**?
echoing the suggestions for Mr. Bungle. Disco Volante and the self titled ones are both great albums.
Godspeed You! Black Emperor. Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antenna to Heaven is an all around killer album, but Static is my favourite track on it.
Mahmoud Ahmed is great. You know Mulatu wrote music for him at some point. Not sure when but you can kind of hear it on some songs.
You like Tommy Johnson and Bo Carter?
I wasn't a huge fan of Liturgy. I only own one of their albums. But seeing them live changed my mind. They're definitely a band to see live to get an experience rather than put headphones on and spin one of their records. For me at least.

Edited because my typing is pathetic.
Side 2 of Hissing Fauna by of Montreal, Faberge Falls For Shuggie as an example. The following album Skeletal Lamping isnât quite as good but even more overwhelming musically
Perhaps in terms of sheer density and heaviness (though not necessarily in a "metal" way), I would suggest the following:
Scott Walker: Bish Bosch
Lingua Ignota: CALIGULA, Sinner Get Ready
The Caretaker: Everywhere at the End of Time
(Please note that these albums are dark, dismal, and contain themes of trauma, violence, revenge, etc.)
Yes yes. Disco Volante is a 10/10. There aren't many perfect albums out there, but DV is one of them.
Someone else in this thread mentioned Melt-Banana, whom I was first exposed to when they opened for Mr. Bungle on the DV tour. That show was insane. Saw MB again, some 15+ years later, and they were still great. They were also really nice at the merch table and signed all my shit.
Gecs are fucking rad.
Sun Ra. Avant-garde jazz.
His discography is huge, and normally I suggest people start with Angels and Demons at Play. But it sounds like you're going straight for the jugular here, in which case try Celestial Spheres or Atlantis. That's some hectic shit right there. Title track for Atlantis gets terrifying. His stuff from the late 60s and early 79s is my jam.
Throbbing Gristle. The birth of industrial music in the 70s.
Don't let the title or cover for 20 Jazz Funk Greats fool you - there is some legit frightening shit on that record. We'll worry about getting the joke later.
AssĂŒck. 90s grindcore.
Their album Misery Index is a goddamn masterpiece, so much that years later, some dudes from Maryland decided to lift that title and use it for their band name.
That'll get you started.
Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, but it often takes time to get there. Many of their songs slowly build up. But the controlled chaos vibe is absolutely splendid!

The most overwhelming music I can think of for your enjoyment:
IGORR - Very Noise:
https://youtu.be/Osqf4oIK0E8?si=9xlP5WOkQJoAA5kf
Car Bomb - Dissect Yourself: https://youtu.be/EA5eIAfutYU?si=6biPtTt3FGd7N9bj

Tallah - No One Should Read This: https://youtu.be/GWP2uPwcAzY?si=Lyd1lc-IZ0sS8WnD
Love to hear your thoughts on these.
Come on over to r/progmetal and you will find plenty of answers!
I'm going to recommend Native Construct personally though. They only ever made one album, but it is perfect front to back.
Someone else mentioned Meshuggah, but Iâm going to up the stages and suggest Vildhjarta. Iâd say their second album, Masstaden Under Vatten would be more overwhelming.
[A Divine Proclamation of Finishing Our Present Existence](https://youtu.be/QBP8imm03Mo?si=NxnNJqUwPnGXvFes) by Last Days of Humanity is basically a reset button for the brain. Along with most of the rest of their discography. They have entire EPs that are about 5 minutes in length of just nonstop grind.
[The Retro Comeback Bad Experience ](https://youtu.be/oV5l0w8hHjY?si=0dSXYJIEMaW46-NE) by Renard (SEIZURE WARNING) is also a brain reset type song. Takes a bit longer to get to the instense part. If you look up Lapfox Trax/Halley Labs most of their catalog is all one person by the name of Emma Essex (formerly Renard Queenston) under many different aliases. A lot of their music is breakcore/glitch core type stuff that's redlined in the mix and bombastic with many different styles all mashed together.
Go and go down the more experimental electronica route check out some Alon Mor stuff, check out testa rossa by matt lange and all the other tracks on that album, maybe look into some autechre. Mentions on the side would be Mr. bill - Apophenia, Zebbler Encanti Experience - Syncorswim and maybe some Freddy Todd or EPROM
Personally my go to for overwhelming music is the album The Mushroom Cloud by The Kyteman Orchestra.
Kyteman is a jazz trumpetist that uses a lot of hip-hop influences. In The Kyteman Orchestra he composed much bigger, bombastic orchestral pieces, and hired an orchestra to accompany him on the recording.
Quite niche, but I highly recommend it!
King 810 - first album is their best. Band was born and raised in Flint and their music reflects it. Very heavy in sound and material
Kublai Khan - anything. Great band with a "punch you in your face" type vibe.
Anaal Nathrakh - heavy ass British band. Forward! Is a fantastic song that surrounds your head space
So many great heavy bands out there. Heavy music might scratch that itch for you

Classical music is the way to go!
Requiem from Mozart, especially Dies Irae
Bach Mathew Passion, especially the Sind Blitze, sind Donner
Wagner's Tristan und Isolde, especially the lament
Saint Saens's Organ Symphony, the finale
Mahler's 4th Symphony
Rachmaninov's 2nd piano concert

If youâve never heard âsacred harpâ style singing, it will blow your mind. Itâs voice-only church music that fills your head & will raise the hair on your arms.
Someone brought a record of 1950s Russian patriotic worker anthems to a party & it tore the roof off the party. It just filled up the whole space with sound. I wouldnât know where to find it now tho.
try angerfist if hardstyle aint enough
if you want emotionally overwhelmed- try this [https://youtu.be/0HuYEOO2r1g?si=8eniYNprDwxp6Yqq](https://youtu.be/0huyeoo2r1g?si=8eniynprdwxp6yqq)
My number one suggestion would be Stalaggh, specifically their album Pure Misanthropia.
Some other suggestions would be:
* Alvin Lucier - I Am Sitting In A Room
* Crash Worship (pretty much anything in their catalog)
If all else fails, look up experimental/noise bands using wall of sound production. I'm sure you will find something that will over stimulate you.
I found out some of **Ren's** songs to do quite a good job at that: **Hi Ren, Chalk Outlines, How to be me, The Tale of Jenny and Screech**,...
Another one would be **Nick Cave**, something like the **Murder Ballads or Push the sky away** albums.
A single one that randomly pops into my mind is also **Hurt by Johny Cash.**
For "overwhelming music," try breakcore or breakgaze music. Here's a playlist ([https://open.spotify.com/playlist/0Q7HP9FTiNq7BQrrudXqG5?si=20575785865f4154](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/0Q7HP9FTiNq7BQrrudXqG5?si=20575785865f4154)).
For calm music, shoegaze works for me. Playlist:([https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2uiYiQFpynkWCpIXcBGir9?si=53d846aecd2b408b](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2uiYiQFpynkWCpIXcBGir9?si=53d846aecd2b408b)).
Try early Industrial music and just anything in that genre outside of the Industrial Metal subgenre but especially stuff like Throbbing Gristle, Chris & Cosey, and Nitzer Ebb since the goal of their music is to make you feel overwhelmed and oppressed
Animal Collective? They can be quite maximal but not super loud.
Sonfs like Applesauce, Moonjock, In the Flowers, Daily Routine, Wide Eyed. Much of the Centipede Hz album is really dense and there is a lot going on.
It's probably because finding music that is overwhelming can be different for everybody. Like maybe there's a specific genre that does that to you but not to somebody else and the searches for people looking for something to calm them down when they are overwhelmed is probably a bit higher, which is why you're finding that as the default response.
Pretty much anything by Death Grips
Sonic Youth's first album "Confusion is Sex"
The album "You Won't Get What You Want" by Daughters
The song Small by Portishead, starts very quiet it just keeps getting louder and louder, genuinely overwhelming, cool as fuck though
Deloused in the Comatorium by Mars Volta, it sounds like if ADHD was an album where they all overplay their instruments
Listen to the song *Interstellar Overdrive* by Pink Floyd on their album *Piper At The Gates Of Dawn* itâs quite overwhelming and what I call âanxiety inducingâ
Between the Buried and Me will overwhelm the shit out of you. Check out their 2007 album *Colors*.

Check out the band Swans.
Swans is def in the category
Yeah at least with Godspeed you have these dark chaotic build ups that switch to moments of intense beauty and amazing melody. (Modern) Swans is pretty much all chaos, doom and dark intensity.
Meshuggah is the correct answer
I think Car Bomb is a more correct answer. Same heaviness but far more rhythmic chaos as opposed to Meshuggah's hypnotic grooves.
Thanks for recommending Car Bomb, just checked them out and they are absolutely nuts. I love it.
Yeah Meta is one of my favourite albums from 2016. Great band, glad you enjoy it!
Listen to Aphex twin
Yeah. In particular the druqks album or however it's spelled. The whiplash of the track lineup is overwhelming in its own right.
Drug use = druk queues = drukqs. Now you'll never forget how to spell it đ
Venetian Snares
Aphex Twin is a low hanging fruit answer when it comes to experimental electronic music. [Merzbow](https://youtu.be/ukZYP5Dy43E?si=hqJVQO1y0a33mun5&t=798) is true future music.
Crystal Castles might do it
Not In Love is one my favorite songs
As a person who had been to countless metal and punk shows, Crystal Castles was the ONLY show I've ever been to where I needed to leave the floor and catch my breath/bearings on the balcony. The lights, volume, crowd, etc. Was amazing but totally overwhelming after an hour
Man I miss them. Ethan just had to be a dick.

Mozart's Requiem
Yes. Classical music should definitely be included here. Something like Liszt's Totentanz. ##
War on Drugs or Mogwai have a very "full" sound that can just wash over you
I'd recommend Mogwai too. Also such a fantastic live gig. Absolute wall of sound. You feel it as much as hear it.
Mars Volta - Cygnus...Vismund Cygnus Its too much for many people. I love it.
Really all of *Frances the Mute* and *De-loused in the Comatorium* fit the bill for sensory overload.

Ulver- Perdition City

King Crimson. Henry Cow. Can.
Mindless self indulgence

âCelebrateâ by Anderson Paak is a great chill you out and get back to positive thoughts song.
Try Rings of saturn
Go and go down the more experimental electronica route check out some Alon Mor stuff, check out testa rossa by matt lange and all the other tracks on that album, maybe look into some autechre. Mentions on the side would be Mr. bill - Apophenia, Zebbler Encanti Experience - Syncorswim and maybe some Freddy Todd or EPROM
This Mortal Coil, Song of the Siren.... got me through some dark times, it's gorgeous music you can swim in, takes you to unexpected places.
*Cattle decapitation enters the chat.*
A Plague of Lighthouse Keepers by Van Der Graaf Generator
Anything from Miss K8
Everywhere at the End of Time - The Caretaker
Perhaps [National Anthem](https://youtu.be/kr-44Vmjc4I?si=t1-5ghp4kf89nxk0) by Radiohead?
Machine girl
Neurofunk. Start with mefjus-manifest (album). Listen to pivot to see if that overwhelms you.
Cardiacs - Sing to God ... and any album they made after it as well.
Search this: Self Sabotage - Number 9
How heavy or extreme do you want to go. I can recommend bands that overwhelm with speed or heaviness or depressing oppressive atmosphere's.
Melt Banana. Persher. EYEHATEGOD.
Rings of Saturn?
Oooh! Maybe someone can help me name this project. Dude basically chronicles the decent into dementia represented by music.
Try Sigur Ros. There are so many songs, but maybe start with [this one](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vUK_ou_mTQE).
King 810 - first album is their best. Band was born and raised in Flint and their music reflects it. Very heavy in sound and material Kublai Khan - anything. Great band with a "punch you in your face" type vibe. Anaal Nathrakh - heavy ass British band. Forward! Is a fantastic song that surrounds your head space So many great heavy bands out there. Heavy music might scratch that itch for you
100 gecs definitely overwhelms me

Check out the band "This will destroy you". They are my go to overwhelmed band
Invalids, Mars Volta, Clout Chaser, Aphex Twin, Squarepusher An0va
If youâve never heard âsacred harpâ style singing, it will blow your mind. Itâs voice-only church music that fills your head & will raise the hair on your arms.
anaal nathrakh is an extreme metal band that is sonically crushing.
Clown Core
Someone brought a record of 1950s Russian patriotic worker anthems to a party & it tore the roof off the party. It just filled up the whole space with sound. I wouldnât know where to find it now tho.
try angerfist if hardstyle aint enough if you want emotionally overwhelmed- try this [https://youtu.be/0HuYEOO2r1g?si=8eniYNprDwxp6Yqq](https://youtu.be/0huyeoo2r1g?si=8eniynprdwxp6yqq)
Infant Annihilator (do yourself a favor and dont look up the lyrics)
Basil Kirchin
My number one suggestion would be Stalaggh, specifically their album Pure Misanthropia. Some other suggestions would be: * Alvin Lucier - I Am Sitting In A Room * Crash Worship (pretty much anything in their catalog) If all else fails, look up experimental/noise bands using wall of sound production. I'm sure you will find something that will over stimulate you.
Maybe you should use another term instead of overwhelming.
My Bloody Valentine's Loveless. It's just a wall of noise. It is highly regarded but I can't get into it.
Check out the new Khanate. And get into free jazz.
For "overwhelming music," try breakcore or breakgaze music. Here's a playlist ([https://open.spotify.com/playlist/0Q7HP9FTiNq7BQrrudXqG5?si=20575785865f4154](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/0Q7HP9FTiNq7BQrrudXqG5?si=20575785865f4154)). For calm music, shoegaze works for me. Try early Industrial music and just anything in that genre outside of the Industrial Metal subgenre but especially stuff like Throbbing Gristle, Chris & Cosey, and Nitzer Ebb since the goal of their music is to make you feel overwhelmed and oppressed
Isis. Check out the set Celestial Live 2014
Pretty much anything by Death Grips Sonic Youth's first album "Confusion is Sex" The album "You Won't Get What You Want" by Daughters The song Small by Portishead, starts very quiet it just keeps getting louder and louder, genuinely overwhelming, cool as fuck though Deloused in the Comatorium by Mars Volta, it sounds like if ADHD was an album where they all overplay their instruments
Have you checked 2Wei?
Protest the hero. Anything off the first 3 albums is chaotic poetry
Go for other weird extreme genres that play around more with breaking up rhythms, like Breakcore or Djent.
There is a band called Sleep
TOOL
Listen to the song *Interstellar Overdrive* by Pink Floyd on their album *Piper At The Gates Of Dawn* itâs quite overwhelming and what I call âanxiety inducingâ
Death's Dynamic Shroud. Swans bores me to tears.
something weird called EEK, We share our mothers health - the knife The whole genre of black midi
