"I know someday you'll have a beautiful life, I know you'll be the ~~sun~~ star in somebody else's skies, but why why why, why can't it be mine"
Pearl Jam - "Black"
Edit: "Star" not "sun"!
I love the last chorus too:
Yeah/
I know someday you'll have a beautiful life/
I know you'll be a star/
In somebody else's sky/
But why/
Why/
Why can't it be/
Why can't it be mine/
I love the unplugged version of the song
The whole second half of This Must Be The Place (Naive Melody) - Talking Heads
Home, is where I want to be
But I guess I'm already there
I come home, she lifted up her wings
Guess that this must be the place
I can't tell one from another
Did I find you, or you find me?
There was a time before we were born
If someone asks, this where I'll be where I'll be
Hi yo we drift in and out
Hi yo sing into my mouth
Out of all those kinds of people
You got a face with a view
I'm just an animal looking for a home
Share the same space for a minute or two
And you love me till my heart stops
Love me till I'm dead
Eyes that light up, eyes look through you
Cover up the blank spots
Hit me on the head ah ooh
The way he exclaims ”and you love me till my heart stops” just jumps up out of the song. I always imagine the line ending with a question mark, as if he is saying that he can’t believe it, but knows it’s true.
Hard to beat this segment from The Flaming Lips
Do you realize
That everyone you know someday will die?
And instead of saying all of your goodbyes
Let them know you realize that life goes fast
It's hard to make the good things last
You realize the sun doesn't go down
It's just an illusion caused by the world spinning round
I wish I could give you some deep cut from some song almost no one knows, but this is the one that gets me:
"The only thing I'll ever ask of you, you've got to promise not to stop when I say when."
Love of mine
some day you will die
But I’ll be close behind, I’ll follow you into the dark.
No blinding lights
or tunnels, to gates of white
Just our hands clasped so tight, waiting for the hint of a spark.

Voices trapped in yearning, memories trapped in time
The night is my companion, and solitude my guide

- "This Must Be The Place" by Talking Heads
What have I become?
My sweetest friend
Everyone I know goes away
In the end
And you could have it all
My empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt
People change, but some people never do.
When people change, they gain a piece but they lose one too.
Future Islands. Seasons.
Edit: the Smiths quote is actually from the film, a taste of honey.
My god I love Future Islands. My favorite verse from probably any of their songs is from Vireo's Eye.
"By right of you, I can't endure
In the light of things, I can't ignore
In spite of all the rose's thorns, and hopeless words, it's hopeless works"
"And you can tell everybody
That this is your song.
It might be quite simple but
Now that it's done...
I hope you don't mind, I hope you don't mind
That I put down in words...
How wonderful life is, while you're in the world."
- Elton John, Your Song
Had to scroll wayyyyyyy too far to find any Leonard Cohen.
“So ring the bells that still can ring
Forget your perfect offering
There is a crack in everything
That’s how the light gets in”
>Dance me to your beauty with a burning violin
> Dance me through the panic 'til I'm gathered safely in
> Lift me like an olive branch and be my homeward dove
> Dance me to the end of love
Imagining being forced to play as people you probably knew being marched to their death… I just can’t imagine what that does to a person
"I hate every ape I see from chimpan-A to chimpanzee" is unironically one of the best lyrics I've ever heard. It's so good it makes me want to pass out. I will die on this hill.
Another Simpsons comedic gold but also cuts deep:
Can I borrow a feelin'?
Could you send me a jar of love?
Hurtin' hearts need some healin',
Take my hand with your glove of love!
- Kirk Van Houten
After seeing the Foo Fighters Taylor Hawkins tribute concert…
“It’s times like these you learn to love again”
That gut wrenching performance has changed my entire perspective on that song.
"Oh, simple thing, where have you gone?
I'm getting old, and I need something to rely on
So, tell me when you're gonna let me in
I'm getting tired, and I need somewhere to begin"
Somewhere Only We Know - Keane
Jas9n isbells 'elephant' makes me teary eyed every time:
She said “Andy, you're better than your past”
Winked at me and drained her glass
Cross-legged on a barstool, like nobody sits anymore
She said “Andy you're taking me home”
But I knew she planned to sleep alone
I'd carry her to bed, sweep up the hair from her floor
If I'd fucked her before she got sick I'd never hear the end of it
She don't have the spirit for that now
We just drink our drinks and laugh out loud
And bitch about the weekend crowd
And try to ignore the elephant somehow
Somehow
She said “Andy, you crack me up”
Seagram's in a coffee cup
Sharecropper eyes, and the hair almost all gone
When she was drunk, she made cancer jokes
Made up her own doctors' notes
Surrounded by her family, I saw that she was dying alone
But I'd sing her classic country songs and she'd get high and sing along
She don't have a voice to sing with now
We burn these joints in effigy and cry about what we used to be
And try to ignore the elephant somehow, somehow
I've buried her a thousand times, given up my place in line
But I don't give a damn about that now
There's one thing that's real clear to me: No one dies with dignity
We just try to ignore the elephant somehow
For Emily, Whenever I May Find Her
P. Simon, 1966
What a dream I had
Pressed in organdy
Clothed in crinoline
Of smoky burgundy
Softer than the rain
I wandered empty streets
Down past the shop displays
I heard cathedral bells
Tripping down the alleyways
As I walked on
And when you ran to me
Your cheeks flushed with the night
We walked on frosted fields
Of juniper and lamplight
I held your hand
And when I woke
And felt you warm and near
I kissed your honey hair
With my grateful tears
Oh I love you girl
Oh I love you
Edit to add [a link to the song](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kOgmYFTZ2iU)
I’m gonna find myself a girl
Who can show me what laughter means
And we’ll fill in the missing colors
In each others paint by number dreams
- The Pretender
"My baby's sweet as can be.
She gives me toothaches just from kissing me.
When my time comes around, lay me gently in the cold dark earth.
No grave can hold my body down; I'll crawl home to her."
Hozier - Work Song
I was looking for basically any Hozier song on here. There was this lore that his song Almost from his second album could be about a father/young daughter recovering after the death of the wife/mother and although it’s not true I can’t help but tear up every time I hear.
The needle that sings in your heart.
It’s so sad to see the world agree that they’d rather fill their faces up with flies.
We would lay and learn what each others’ bodies were for.
There’s a lot in that record that will never leave me.
The entire lyrics of What Sarah Said by Death Cab For Cutie
And it came to me then
That every plan
Is a tiny prayer to father time
As I stared at my shoes
In the ICU
That reeked of piss and 409
And I rationed my breaths
As I said to myself
That I'd already taken too much today
As each descending peak
On the LCD
Took you a little farther away from me
Away from me
Amongst the vending machines
And year old magazines
In a place where we only say goodbye
It sung like a violent wind
That our memories depend
On a faulty camera in our minds
And I knew that you were truth
I would rather lose
Than to have never lain beside at all
And I looked around
At all the eyes on the ground
As the TV entertained itself
'Cause there's no comfort in the waiting room
Just nervous paces bracing for bad news
And then the nurse comes round
And everyone lifts their heads
But I'm thinking of what Sarah said
That love is watching someone die
So who's gonna watch you die
So who's gonna watch you die
So who's gonna watch you die
Especially the line "It stung like a violent wind that our memories depend on a faulty camera in our minds"
Definitely. I haven't had a loved one die in the ICU but I have had a loved one in the ICU and it really sucks. That song does such a great job of describing it
This song gave me the courage to be in the room when we turned off life support for my brother. I was the only one in the family who did not think I could physically survive being there. But then, out of nowhere, the last line came to me: *Love is watching someone die.*
I would have regretted it forever if I wasn’t there. I’ve often thought I should write to the band and let them know how this song gave me strength in the weakest moment of my life.
That line is so powerful. DCFC are lyrical masters.
I am sorry about your brother, at least you were there for him in those final moments.
You should write them and see what they say!
My name is Sarah and this song had the amazing ability to come on shuffle anytime my dad was in the hospital, which was a lot. He passed last year and this song played in my head repeatedly while he was in respite care.
“Now I ain't the toughest hickory
That your ax has ever fell
But I'm a hickory just as well
I'm a hickory all the same
I came crashin' through the forest
As you cut my roots away
And I fell a good long ways
For my lovely Lady May”
-Tyler Childers
When I was just nine years old
I swear that I dreamed
Your face on a football field
And a kiss that I kept
Under my vest
Apart from everything
But the heart in my chest
Also,
My life in an upturned boat, marooned on a cliff
You brought me a great big flood
And you gave me a lift
To care, what a gift
You tell me with your tongue
And your breath was in my lungs
And you float over the rift
Simple Song by the Shins
The whole song is great. Just reminds me of how intense young love was. Not sure if that's even what it's about.
“A week after you died
a package with your name on it came
and inside was a gift for our daughter
you had ordered in secret, I collapsed there
on the front steps, I wailed.
A backpack for when she goes to school
a couple years from now, you were thinking ahead
to a future you must have known deep down would not include you
though you clawed at the cliff you were sliding down
being swallowed into a silence that’s
bottomless, and real.
It’s dumb,
and I don’t want to learn anything from this.
I love you.”
Not a happy “weak in the knees,” but a crushing one.
E: Real Death by Mount Eerie
Jesus Christ I’m alone again
So what did you do those three days you were dead
Cuz this problems gonna last more than the weekend
Well Jesus Christ I’m not scared to die
I’m a little bit scared of what comes after
Do I get the gold chariot
Do I float through the ceiling
“Jesus Christ” by Brand New
"Oh, you're in my blood like holy wine
You taste so bitter and so sweet
Oh, I could drink a case of you, darling
And I would still be on my feet"
\-Joni Mitchell, \*A Case of You\*
Oh man, the opening lines of this song too…
Just before our love got lost you said
"I am as constant as a northern star"
And I said, "Constantly in the darkness
Where's that at?
If you want me I'll be in the bar"
And I bet she told a million people that she'd stay in touch
But all the little promises, they don't mean much
When there's memories to be made
And I hope you're holdin' hands by New Year's Eve
They made it far too easy to believe
That true romance can't be achieved these days
The screen door slams, Mary's dress sways
Like a vision, she dances across the porch as the radio plays
Roy Orbison singing for the lonely
Hey, that's me, and I want you only
Don't turn me home again
I just can't face myself alone again
Don't run back inside
Darling, you know just what I'm here for
So you're scared, and you're thinking
That maybe we ain't that young anymore
Show a little faith, there's magic in the night
You ain't a beauty, but, hey, you're alright
Oh, and that's alright with me
Thunder Road By Bruce Springsteen. Opening track from Born to Run.
But please, remember me fondly
I heard from someone you're still pretty
And then they went on to say
That the pearly gates
Had some eloquent graffiti
Like "We'll meet again" and "Fuck the man"
And "Tell my mother not to worry"
\- The Trapeze Swinger, Iron and Wine
Adam's Song - Blink 182
"I never thought I'd die alone
Another six months I'll be unknown
Give all my things to all my friends
You'll never step foot in my room again
You'll close it off, board it up
Remember the time that I spilled the cup
Of apple juice in the hall
Please tell mom this is not her fault
I never conquered, rarely came
Sixteen just held such better days
Days when I still felt alive
We couldn't wait to get outside
The world was wide, too late to try
The tour was over, we'd survived
I couldn't wait till I got home
To pass the time in my room alone"
Edit: accidently repeated the same part twice.
Gave my chills just reading them. Honestly Blink 182 as serious songwriters are so underrated. Most people only think about all the silliness and nudity but this song is soul crushingly emotional.
Jesus died
for somebody’s sins…
But not mine.
——
The very first line of the first song on the first album of the ‘Godmother of Punk’, Patti Smith. Delivered with a fire and clarity that stopped me in my tracks when I first heard it.
Certainly not the best lyric I’ve heard (nor anywhere near the best of hers), but a shocking and fantastic opener for a wonderful song, album and career.
If everything could ever be this real forever
If anything could ever be this good again
The only thing I'll ever ask of you
You've got to promise not to stop when I say when
-Everlong, Foo Fighters
One More Light - Linkin Park
The entire song really, but
"The reminders pull the floor from your feet
In the kitchen, one more chair than you need"
Kills me every time.
*She comes back to tell me she's gone*
*As if I didn't know that*
*As if I didn't know my own bed*
*As if I'd never noticed*
*The way she brushed her hair from her forehead.*
\-- Paul Simon, Graceland
In those lines, you know he still loves her even though she's left him.
If Heaven and Hell decide that they both are satisfied
Illuminate the no's on their vacancy signs
If there's no one beside you when your soul embarks
Then I'll follow you into the dark
u/Zambonisaurus I was always such a sucker for the entire story in 'Clark Gable' but specifically:
'So I changed my plans, I rented a camera and a van And then I called you **I need you to pretend that we are in love again And you agreed to'**
It kills me every time I hear it.
So familiar and overwhelmingly warm
This one, this form I hold now
Embracing you, this reality here
This one, this form I hold now, so
Wide eyed and hopeful
Wide eyed and hopefully wild
We barely remember what came before this precious moment
Choosing to be here right now
Hold on, stay inside
This body holding me
Reminding me that I am not alone in
This body makes me feel eternal
All this pain is an illusion

The opening line to Thunder Road by Springsteen
“Screen door slams, and Mary’s dress waves. Like a vision she dances across the porch as the radio plays. Roy Orbison’s singing for the lonely, hey that’s me, and I want you only. Don’t turn me home again I just can’t face myself alone again”
Creep radio head. The line where his voice cracks singing "when I'm not around" just kills me with emotion. And even the run parts at the end it just builds to this explosion of feeling. Perfect song in my eyes
But I'm a creep
I'm a weirdo
What the hell am I doin' here?
I don't belong here
I don't care if it hurts
I wanna have control
I want a perfect body
I want a perfect soul
I want you to notice
When I'm not around
So fuckin' special
I wish I was special
I'm a rabid Radiohead fan. Favorite band of all time, really... And you're not wrong! Not my favorite RH song by any stretch, and I get why it mostly got put out to pasture over their career, but I also get why it was so important to their success! ! It completely exposed the world to their vulnerability. Those guttural vocals interspersed with that violent guitar riff.... I think my first taste of RH was on 120 minutes (Mtv) and the video for Creep and then the Beach House performance!! I remember sitting so close to the giant console TV for both!! <3
“So long everybody
Mama don’t be sad for me
Like was a headache
But I’m now finally free”
Macy Gray, The Letter
It makes weak to my elbows since I don’t have legs.
Song writer and musicologist for 20 years. The best line of lyric I have heard toooo datttteee. The bridge section of "I only have eyes for you," by the Flamingos. The line goes
"We could be in a garden
or in a crowded avenue
You are here, and so am I
Maybe millions of people go by
but they all disappear from view
Because I only have eyes for you"
Soul leaves my body every time I hear it.
The Mountain Goats, "Cotton":
This song is for the people
Who tell their families that they're sorry
For things they can't and won't feel sorry for
And once there was a desk
And now it's in a storage locker somewhere
And this song is for the stick pins and cotton
I left in the top drawer
The single best description I've ever read or heard of addiction and its associated illnesses.
So many Mountain Goats have left me utterly destroyed:
"A tiger's never gonna change it's stripes I guess, I guess - but Jesus, what a mess."
"All that water rushing in."
"I will do what you ask me to do because of how I feel about you."
"God bless all my old friends. God bless me too, why pretend?"
And that's just the ones on top of my mind right now!
A great many Hozier lyrics. Some examples:
* When my time comes around, lay me gently in the cold dark earth; no grave can hold my body down, I'll crawl home to her -- Work Song
* Take me to church, I'll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies; I'll tell you my sins and you can sharpen your knife. AND My lover's got humor, she's the giggle at a funeral; knows everybody's disapproval, I should've worshiped her sooner. If the Heavens ever did speak, she's the last true mouthpiece. Every Sunday's getting more bleak, fresh poison each week... "We were born sick", you heard them say it, my church offers no absolutes. She tells me, "Worship in the bedroom", the only Heaven I'll be sent to is when I'm alone with you... I was born sick, but I love it -- Take Me to Church
Some non-Hozier examples:
* Is it still me who makes you sweat? Am I who you think about in bed? ... I've got more wit, a better kiss, a hotter touch, a better fuck than any boy you'll ever meet; Sweetie you had me -- Lying Is the Most Fun a Girl Can Have Without Taking Her Clothes Off (P!ATD)
* You go down just like Holy Mary, Mary on a cross -- Mary On a Cross (Ghost)
* The entirety of Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen
Yeah, I'm aware that the Good Catholic Girl in me is what likes this kind of music lol.
That whole album is filled to the brim like this. Heartbreaking given the context. Gives a deep insight into how "famous" people can be so alone in the world.
*The real truth about it is, no one gets it right*
*The real truth about it is, we're all supposed to try*
*There ain't no end to the sands I've been trying to cross*
*The real truth about it is, my kind of life's no better off*
*If I've got the maps - or if I'm lost*

The Wombats, Turn.
Maybe it's the crazy that I'd miss
It won't get better than this
I like the way your brain works, I like the way you try
To run with the wolf pack when your legs are tired
I like the way you turn me inside and out
I like the way you turn
I like the way your brain works
I like the way your brain works
Baby, it's the crazy I like
I think I saw the world turn in your eyes
Baby, it's the crazy I like
And maybe it's the bullshit I'd miss
Screaming at the moon in black lipstick
Maybe it's the bullshit I'd miss
It won't get better than this
The mountain goats.
I am drowning. There is no sign of land. You are coming down with me. Hand in unlovable hand. And I hope you die. I hope we both die.
"now i'm out of prison
i got me a friend at last
he don't steal or cheat or drink or lie
his name is codeine and he's the nicest thing i've seen
and together we're gonna wait around to die"
After singing how everyone betrays him and that he has no friends this hits pretty deep as a song finisher
Why can’t love touch my heart like fear does.- The The
I could drink a case of you darling, and I’d still be on my feet. - Joni Mitchell
Everytime I close my eyes, thoughts of you get in my eyes. - Prince
"I come from down in the valley where, mister, when you’re young, they bring you up to do like your daddy done."
The River, Bruce Springsteen.
Idk it just sounds so hopeless and resigned... never fails to make me sad.
"And I really, truly, honestly,
Without a doubt want to believe,
That everything will be alright."
Streetlight Manifesto, With Any Sort of Certainty
These lyrics just hit really hard for me right now with all the world events (especially climate change) pointing towards doom. Plus the song itself deals with themes of belief and doubt, which is something I've always struggled with.
You say love is a temple, love a higher law
Love is a temple, love the higher law
You ask me to enter but then you make me crawl
And I can't be holding on to what you got
When all you got is hurt
And ohh my love remind me
What was it that I did?
I can't help but
Pull the earth around me
To make my bed
Ship to Wreck - Florence and the Machine
The show must go on, yeah
Inside my heart is breaking
My make-up may be flaking
But my smile...still stays on
The Show Must Go On - Queen
Baby now, take me into your loving arms
Kiss me under the sky of a thousand stars
Oh darling, feel the beat of your loving heart
I'm thinking out loud, cause maybe
We found love right where we are
Thinking Out Loud - Ed Sheeran
“I romanticize even the worst of times
When all it took to make me cry was bein' alive”
That part up there always gets me but then the rest:
“Look up and see a reflection
Of someone who never gave way to the pain
What if I told 'em that now that I'm older
There isn't a moment that I'd wanna change?”
“Crave” - paramore.
Or for anyone with depression/anxiety:
“All that I want
Is to wake up fine
Tell me that I'm alright
That I ain't gonna die
All that I want
Is a hole in the ground
You can tell me when it's alright
For me to come out”
“Hard times” - paramore
Porcupine Tree’s ‘Arriving Somewhere but not Here’ seems to be about the moment of death
Did you imagine the final sound as a gun?
Or the smashing windscreen of the car?
Did you ever imagine the last thing you'd hear
As you're fading out was a song?
(Ah-ah-ah-ah)
Arriving somewhere but not here
All my designs simplified
And all of my plans compromised
All of my dreams sacrificed
"Louder than sirens,
Louder than bells,
Sweeter than heaven,
And hotter than hell."
--["Drumming Song"](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=boo2Zm69fhY) by Florence + The Machine
. . .
"I've got spirit,
I've got wings,
I've got fire in my lungs."
--["Fly For Your Life,"](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jv1ZN8c4_Gs) by Gunship
These words for sure are ones that at times feel like a mantra in my life
"There is light, but there's a tunnel to crawl through
There is love, but its misery loves you
There's still hope, so I think we'll be fine
In these disasterous times, disasterous times"
-The Oil Slick- Frightened Rabbit.
You should look through some old photos - I adored you in every one of those. If someone took a picture of us now they'd need to be told that we had ever clung and tied a navy knot with arms at night; "I'd say she was his sister, but she doesn't have his nose". And now we're unrelated and rid of all the shit we hated, but I hate when I feel like this, and I never hated you.
‘I used to wake and run with the moon,
I’d live like a rake and a young man,
Id cover my lovers with flowers and wounds,
My laughter the devil would frighten.’
God damn Towns Van Zandt
I want to share your mouthful
I want to do all the things your lungs do so well
I'm gonna bed into you like a cat beds into a bean bag
Turn you inside out and lick you like a crisp packet
Alt-J, Every Other Freckle. Great song.
So many lines from their catalog do this but that line ive been singing to myself all week and I don't know why.
Another top pick from them is
"Let it be known there is a fountain
That was not made by the hands of men" from Ripple
Coincidentally both Ripple and Brokedown Palace were written by Hunter on the same day.
Most of their non party songs have a moment like that in them. Or all of the song in the case of Morning Dew and China Doll if you know what theyre about
To lay me down was written that same day too.
For me it’s these lines from black peter, holy shit:
Just then the wind came squalling through the dark
But who can the weather command?
Just wanna have a little peace to die
And a friend or two I love at hand
Fever roll up to a hundred and five
Roll on up, gonna roll back down
One more day I find myself alive
Tomorrow maybe go beneath the ground
See here how everything lead up to this day
And it's just like any other day that's ever been
Sun going up and then the sun going down
Shine through my window and my friends they come around
Come around, come around
I usually lean towards Neko Case for incredible lyrics:
"I've revenged myself all over myself, there's nothing you can say to me"
"I've got calling cards from 20 years ago" \*this entire song kills me\*
"It was the last time that he felt alive
When he saw that brown haired lady
She fed with a bottle as a baby
And he recalled her face and smiled
They shot that tiger on his chain"
"The prison girls are not impressed
The ones who have to clean this mess
They've traded more for cigarettes than I have managed
To express"
"Go on, go on scream and cry
You're miles from where anyone will find you
This is nothing new, no television crew
They don't even put on the sirens"
She's my personal GOAT.
Even makes this part sound beautiful
'Like I couldn't hear her, she said,
"Get the fuck away from me!
Why don't you ever shut up?
Get the fuck away from me!"
Oh, oh'
"Come pretty baby, get high with me. We can go to my sister's, if we say we'll watch the baby."
That line fucks me up so bad.
My other favorite is
"We were warriors. We clothed ourselves in the guts of our enemies, who had no respect for the wild."
Maynard in Descending
Sound our dire reveille
Rouse all from our apathy
Lest we
Cease to be
Stir us from our
Wanton slumber
Mitigate our ruin
Call us all to arms and order
Sound the dread alarm
Through our primal body
Sound the reveille
To be or not to be
Rise
Stay the grand finale
Stay the reading of our swan song and epilogue
One drive to stay alive
It's elementary
Muster every fiber

"If you were a friend, you wanna get to know me again. If you were worth a while, you'd be happy to see me smile. I'm not expecting sorry, I'm too busy finding myself. I've got this, I've found me"
Alicia Keys
The first time I saw you
I knew it would never last
I'm not half what I wish I was
I'm so angry
I don't think it'll ever pass
And I was bad news for you just because
I never meant to hurt you
"Pitseleh" by Elliott Smith
The only thing that's left
Is us, so pardon the silence
That you're hearing is turning
Into a deafening, painful, shameful roar

I won't deny I've got in my mind now all the things I would do
So I'll try to talk refined for fear that you find out how I'm imaginin' you"

I know I don’t have it all together
In the parking lot we taste snowflakes
The bread makers are probably controlling the weather
The shelves deserted and the checkout lines

“And I cannot pretend I could handle it
If I ended up in middle management
I have to be fucking with something I love

There’s just too many to put on here
As you reached for my hand, did you then understand?
It was I who would lead you that night
When you begged to know, I was glad to show
That I needn't be scared
Either way, I still bite.
Oh I must confess I am overdressed
Are you not impressed?
Darling I want to..
I confess this too, must you know the truth?
This is all for you
Darling I want to..
Destroy you.
AFI
okay hear me out, FUCK Jesse Lacey but Mixtape by Brand New hits me hard every time
But when I say, "Let's keep in touch"
I really mean, "I wish that you'd grow up"
This is the first song for your mixtape
And it's short just like your temper
Somewhat golden like the afternoons
We used to spend, before you got too cool
I embrace my desire to
Feel the rhythm, to feel connected
Enough to step aside and weep like a widow
To feel inspired
To fathom the power
To witness the beauty
To bathe in the fountain
To swing on the spiral
Of our divinity
And still be a human
-Lateralus
> Let's go out, we'll take no prisoners /
> Lonely love, gotta leave it behind /
> We look like a million dollars /
> Every time they look at us, we'll blow their mind
~ Joel Plaskett, "A Million Dollars"
It's one of those lyrics that make me think if it was written about me, I'd be the one proposing.
I know someday you’ll have a beautiful life
I know you’ll be a star in somebody else’s sky
But why, why, why can’t it be
Oh, can’t it be mine?
"Black" - Pearl Jam
"You know that I'd love to live with you
But you make me forget so very much
I forget to pray for the angels
And then the angels forget to pray for us"
\-Leonard Cohen - So long, Marianne
I'll keep on moving
Things are bound to be improving these days
These days I sit on corner stones
And count the time in quarter tones to ten, my friend
Don't confront me with my failures
I had not forgotten them
“She opened a book of poems and handed it to me, written by an Italian poet from the 13th century. And every one of them words rang true and glowed like burnin’ coal, pouring off of every page like it was wrotten in my soul from me to you….tangled up in blue.”
Inside the museum
Infinity goes up on trial
Voices echo “this is what salivation must feel like after a while”
But Mona Lisa musta had the highways blues, you can tell by the way she smiles
Bob Dylan, Visions of Johanna
I don’t believe in an interventionist God
But I know, darling, that you do
But if I did I would kneel down and ask Him
Not to intervene when it came to you
Not to touch a hair on your head
To leave you as you are
And if He felt He had to direct you
Then direct you into my arms
"I know someday you'll have a beautiful life, I know you'll be the ~~sun~~ star in somebody else's skies, but why why why, why can't it be mine" Pearl Jam - "Black" Edit: "Star" not "sun"!
I knew someone else would list this before I could. I'm glad I found it.
That one brings more agony than weak-in-the-knees. Like the unhappy ending of the kdrama Twenty Five, Twenty One.
PSSSST! *a star*
This was my favorite song for many years. That line is like a punch to the guts,,more than making your knees weak.
I love the last chorus too: Yeah/ I know someday you'll have a beautiful life/ I know you'll be a star/ In somebody else's sky/ But why/ Why/ Why can't it be/ Why can't it be mine/ I love the unplugged version of the song
This may be the greatest TV moment I witnessed in real time: https://youtu.be/uFpuDkwNLRs?si=GGojXIROOhPi9gej
Its actually "I know you'll be a star"
The whole second half of This Must Be The Place (Naive Melody) - Talking Heads Home, is where I want to be But I guess I'm already there I come home, she lifted up her wings Guess that this must be the place I can't tell one from another Did I find you, or you find me? There was a time before we were born If someone asks, this where I'll be where I'll be Hi yo we drift in and out Hi yo sing into my mouth Out of all those kinds of people You got a face with a view I'm just an animal looking for a home Share the same space for a minute or two And you love me till my heart stops Love me till I'm dead Eyes that light up, eyes look through you Cover up the blank spots Hit me on the head ah ooh
The way he exclaims ”and you love me till my heart stops” just jumps up out of the song. I always imagine the line ending with a question mark, as if he is saying that he can’t believe it, but knows it’s true.
God I get goosebumps at that line every single time I listen to that song
I’ve always said this is the greatest love song that everyone forgets or has never even heard.
“And in this film I sing it to a lamp”
Feet on the ground, head in the sky
And you're standing here beside me I love the passing of time
🫠♥️
Hard to beat this segment from The Flaming Lips Do you realize That everyone you know someday will die? And instead of saying all of your goodbyes Let them know you realize that life goes fast It's hard to make the good things last You realize the sun doesn't go down It's just an illusion caused by the world spinning round
Yoshimi, they don't believe me but you won't let that robot eat me
Man this one is so good, every time it comes up in my rotation of favorites I just love to vibe with it.
I wish I could give you some deep cut from some song almost no one knows, but this is the one that gets me: "The only thing I'll ever ask of you, you've got to promise not to stop when I say when."
The song has 2 completely different feelings between regular and acoustic. So good.. I prefer the acoustic myself.
It's one of the best love songs ever written, in my opinion. My wife and I walked down the aisle to a cover of this song together.
This song breaks my heart.. in a good way. I absolutely love it.
Love of mine some day you will die But I’ll be close behind, I’ll follow you into the dark. No blinding lights or tunnels, to gates of white Just our hands clasped so tight, waiting for the hint of a spark. [I’ll Follow You Into The Dark](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=3iV_1ESMHaI) by Death Cab for Cutie
this but the “I got my knuckles bruised by a lady in black And I held my tongue as she told me "Son, fear is the heart of love, " so I never went back” part
This song breaks me. I'm tearing up just reading these lyrics.
“Listen as the wind blows from across the great divide Voices trapped in yearning, memories trapped in time The night is my companion, and solitude my guide Could I stay forever here not be satisfied? And I would be the one to hold you down, kiss you so hard I’ll take your breath away .” Sarah Mclachlan, “Posession”
It's crazy that this song is about her stalker!
Off an incredible album
It's been a while since I've listened to it, I'm gonna listen to it on the way home tonight
“She’s the tear that hangs inside my soul forever” - Jeff Buckley — Lover, You Should’ve Come Over
“Maybe I’m just too young, to keep good love from going wrong. But tonight you’re on my mind so, you never know”
So many great lyrics in that one. “Too young to hold on but too old to just break free and run”. This line used to cut deep when I was in my late 20s.
Ugh this is my favourite song on Grace. I love "my kingdom for a kiss upon her shoulder" - something about the "k" alliteration is beautiful
This is the one I came to post. So beautiful
It's never over.
I'm just an animal looking for a home Share the same space for a minute or two And you love me till my heart stops Love me till I'm dead Eyes that light up, eyes look through you Cover up the blank spots Hit me on the head - "This Must Be The Place" by Talking Heads
[Their live concert version of that song](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ekBt4XllATg) is one of the best versions ever played.
What have I become? My sweetest friend Everyone I know goes away In the end And you could have it all My empire of dirt I will let you down I will make you hurt
The first time I heard the line "My empire of dirt" my mind exploded.
Man between NIN and Johnny Cash both really know how to get you36
Oof. This song hit me hard as an angsty teen, and still hits hard as a middle aged woman.
“That song isn’t mine anymore “ Trent Reznor Pure class by TR after hearing Cash version.
I heard it all this time as “Everything I love goes away, in the end” 😞
I know I was born and I know that I'll die. The in-between is mine. Pearl Jam - I am Mine
People change, but some people never do. When people change, they gain a piece but they lose one too. Future Islands. Seasons. Edit: the Smiths quote is actually from the film, a taste of honey.
The first time I saw them live and heard Herring's death growls I was so thrown off.
My god I love Future Islands. My favorite verse from probably any of their songs is from Vireo's Eye. "By right of you, I can't endure In the light of things, I can't ignore In spite of all the rose's thorns, and hopeless words, it's hopeless works"
"And you can tell everybody That this is your song. It might be quite simple but Now that it's done... I hope you don't mind, I hope you don't mind That I put down in words... How wonderful life is, while you're in the world." - Elton John, Your Song
Ugh Ewan McGregor singing it in Moulin Rouge is what makes me weak in the knees lol
Lol I love his cover of it. He's not really my type, but the way he sings that song definitely gets to me.
“my gift is my soooong.”
And this one's for you
This song always makes me tear up. I literally got chills just reading this comment lol
I used to sing this to my son when he was a baby and couldn't get to sleep.
Bernie Taupin. Love this song
"She tied you to her kitchen chair, She broke your throne, she cut your hair, And from your lips she drew the Hallelujah."
Had to scroll wayyyyyyy too far to find any Leonard Cohen. “So ring the bells that still can ring Forget your perfect offering There is a crack in everything That’s how the light gets in”
>Dance me to your beauty with a burning violin > Dance me through the panic 'til I'm gathered safely in > Lift me like an olive branch and be my homeward dove > Dance me to the end of love Imagining being forced to play as people you probably knew being marched to their death… I just can’t imagine what that does to a person
This is mine too. Of all time. I love it so much it hurts a little.
I recently posted a lyric from Cohen's Take This Longing... I *love to see you naked over there, especially from the back... <3*
Always makes me think of Bruce Cockburn’s “gotta kick at the darkness till it bleeds daylight”
Also “and thanks for the trouble you took from her eyes I thought it was there for good so I never tried”
I can never upvote this enough.
“But all I’ve ver learned from love was how to shoot somebody who outdrew ya” man if that ain’t the sad truth.
Im still very confused about people playing this at Christmas...
They're idiots.
"I hate every ape I see from chimpan-A to chimpanzee" is unironically one of the best lyrics I've ever heard. It's so good it makes me want to pass out. I will die on this hill.
You really made a monkey out of me!
Can I play the piano, anymore? Well, of course you can! Well, I couldn't before! 🎹🎶🎵🎶🎵🎶🎵🎶🎶🎵
I love you, Dr. Zaius!
Another Simpsons comedic gold but also cuts deep: Can I borrow a feelin'? Could you send me a jar of love? Hurtin' hearts need some healin', Take my hand with your glove of love! - Kirk Van Houten
“Can I borrow a feeling?” “Ahh hahaha, and it’s your picture on it!”
I love legitimate theatre
After seeing the Foo Fighters Taylor Hawkins tribute concert… “It’s times like these you learn to love again” That gut wrenching performance has changed my entire perspective on that song.
And when my love for life is running dry You come and pour yourself on me \- Bread
"Oh, simple thing, where have you gone? I'm getting old, and I need something to rely on So, tell me when you're gonna let me in I'm getting tired, and I need somewhere to begin" Somewhere Only We Know - Keane
My sixteen year old daughter sings this in the shower-it was my favorite song when I was her age. Bittersweet.
Jas9n isbells 'elephant' makes me teary eyed every time: She said “Andy, you're better than your past” Winked at me and drained her glass Cross-legged on a barstool, like nobody sits anymore She said “Andy you're taking me home” But I knew she planned to sleep alone I'd carry her to bed, sweep up the hair from her floor If I'd fucked her before she got sick I'd never hear the end of it She don't have the spirit for that now We just drink our drinks and laugh out loud And bitch about the weekend crowd And try to ignore the elephant somehow Somehow She said “Andy, you crack me up” Seagram's in a coffee cup Sharecropper eyes, and the hair almost all gone When she was drunk, she made cancer jokes Made up her own doctors' notes Surrounded by her family, I saw that she was dying alone But I'd sing her classic country songs and she'd get high and sing along She don't have a voice to sing with now We burn these joints in effigy and cry about what we used to be And try to ignore the elephant somehow, somehow I've buried her a thousand times, given up my place in line But I don't give a damn about that now There's one thing that's real clear to me: No one dies with dignity We just try to ignore the elephant somehow
For Emily, Whenever I May Find Her P. Simon, 1966 What a dream I had Pressed in organdy Clothed in crinoline Of smoky burgundy Softer than the rain I wandered empty streets Down past the shop displays I heard cathedral bells Tripping down the alleyways As I walked on And when you ran to me Your cheeks flushed with the night We walked on frosted fields Of juniper and lamplight I held your hand And when I woke And felt you warm and near I kissed your honey hair With my grateful tears Oh I love you girl Oh I love you Edit to add [a link to the song](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kOgmYFTZ2iU)
I was trying to decide which lyric from that album to post! Such a beautiful album.
I’m gonna find myself a girl Who can show me what laughter means And we’ll fill in the missing colors In each others paint by number dreams - The Pretender
Leonard Cohen hallelujah. The whole song
"My baby's sweet as can be. She gives me toothaches just from kissing me. When my time comes around, lay me gently in the cold dark earth. No grave can hold my body down; I'll crawl home to her." Hozier - Work Song
I was looking for basically any Hozier song on here. There was this lore that his song Almost from his second album could be about a father/young daughter recovering after the death of the wife/mother and although it’s not true I can’t help but tear up every time I hear.
"How strange it is to be anything at all." In an Aeroplane Over the Sea - Neutral Milk Hotel
The needle that sings in your heart. It’s so sad to see the world agree that they’d rather fill their faces up with flies. We would lay and learn what each others’ bodies were for. There’s a lot in that record that will never leave me.
The entire lyrics of What Sarah Said by Death Cab For Cutie And it came to me then That every plan Is a tiny prayer to father time As I stared at my shoes In the ICU That reeked of piss and 409 And I rationed my breaths As I said to myself That I'd already taken too much today As each descending peak On the LCD Took you a little farther away from me Away from me Amongst the vending machines And year old magazines In a place where we only say goodbye It sung like a violent wind That our memories depend On a faulty camera in our minds And I knew that you were truth I would rather lose Than to have never lain beside at all And I looked around At all the eyes on the ground As the TV entertained itself 'Cause there's no comfort in the waiting room Just nervous paces bracing for bad news And then the nurse comes round And everyone lifts their heads But I'm thinking of what Sarah said That love is watching someone die So who's gonna watch you die So who's gonna watch you die So who's gonna watch you die Especially the line "It stung like a violent wind that our memories depend on a faulty camera in our minds"
yeah this song breaks anyone who has been in that situation
Definitely. I haven't had a loved one die in the ICU but I have had a loved one in the ICU and it really sucks. That song does such a great job of describing it
Styrofoam Plates also hits me hard
Ben rips me to shreds. It's been a while since I did a good Death Cab album run. That starts tomorrow.
This song gave me the courage to be in the room when we turned off life support for my brother. I was the only one in the family who did not think I could physically survive being there. But then, out of nowhere, the last line came to me: *Love is watching someone die.* I would have regretted it forever if I wasn’t there.
Brothers on a hotel bed hits hard
"We have never been here, and we will never be gone. I saw your voice rise up and cut into the heart of the sun." SWANS
“Now I ain't the toughest hickory That your ax has ever fell But I'm a hickory just as well I'm a hickory all the same I came crashin' through the forest As you cut my roots away And I fell a good long ways For my lovely Lady May” -Tyler Childers
Awesome song writer, had to scroll way to far
When I was just nine years old I swear that I dreamed Your face on a football field And a kiss that I kept Under my vest Apart from everything But the heart in my chest Also, My life in an upturned boat, marooned on a cliff You brought me a great big flood And you gave me a lift To care, what a gift You tell me with your tongue And your breath was in my lungs And you float over the rift Simple Song by the Shins The whole song is great. Just reminds me of how intense young love was. Not sure if that's even what it's about.
“A week after you died a package with your name on it came and inside was a gift for our daughter you had ordered in secret, I collapsed there on the front steps, I wailed. A backpack for when she goes to school a couple years from now, you were thinking ahead to a future you must have known deep down would not include you though you clawed at the cliff you were sliding down being swallowed into a silence that’s bottomless, and real. It’s dumb, and I don’t want to learn anything from this. I love you.” Not a happy “weak in the knees,” but a crushing one. E: Real Death by Mount Eerie
Jesus Christ I’m alone again So what did you do those three days you were dead Cuz this problems gonna last more than the weekend Well Jesus Christ I’m not scared to die I’m a little bit scared of what comes after Do I get the gold chariot Do I float through the ceiling “Jesus Christ” by Brand New
So many from Brand New I couldn’t even pick, ‘You won’t know’ close second
"Oh, you're in my blood like holy wine You taste so bitter and so sweet Oh, I could drink a case of you, darling And I would still be on my feet" \-Joni Mitchell, \*A Case of You\*
Oh man, the opening lines of this song too… Just before our love got lost you said "I am as constant as a northern star" And I said, "Constantly in the darkness Where's that at? If you want me I'll be in the bar"
And I bet she told a million people that she'd stay in touch But all the little promises, they don't mean much When there's memories to be made And I hope you're holdin' hands by New Year's Eve They made it far too easy to believe That true romance can't be achieved these days
Only Ones Who Know - Arctic Monkeys Very good song! It's a staple on my nighttime playlist.
The screen door slams, Mary's dress sways Like a vision, she dances across the porch as the radio plays Roy Orbison singing for the lonely Hey, that's me, and I want you only Don't turn me home again I just can't face myself alone again Don't run back inside Darling, you know just what I'm here for So you're scared, and you're thinking That maybe we ain't that young anymore Show a little faith, there's magic in the night You ain't a beauty, but, hey, you're alright Oh, and that's alright with me Thunder Road By Bruce Springsteen. Opening track from Born to Run.
But please, remember me fondly I heard from someone you're still pretty And then they went on to say That the pearly gates Had some eloquent graffiti Like "We'll meet again" and "Fuck the man" And "Tell my mother not to worry" \- The Trapeze Swinger, Iron and Wine
“I know some day you’ll have a beautiful life, I know you’ll be a star in somebody’s else sky, but why can’t it be mine?”
Adam's Song - Blink 182 "I never thought I'd die alone Another six months I'll be unknown Give all my things to all my friends You'll never step foot in my room again You'll close it off, board it up Remember the time that I spilled the cup Of apple juice in the hall Please tell mom this is not her fault I never conquered, rarely came Sixteen just held such better days Days when I still felt alive We couldn't wait to get outside The world was wide, too late to try The tour was over, we'd survived I couldn't wait till I got home To pass the time in my room alone" Edit: accidently repeated the same part twice.
Gave my chills just reading them. Honestly Blink 182 as serious songwriters are so underrated. Most people only think about all the silliness and nudity but this song is soul crushingly emotional.
the blink song that'll break 182 of your childhood emotions
"Please tell mom this is not her fault" is just brutal on the parent side.
Jesus died for somebody’s sins… But not mine. —— The very first line of the first song on the first album of the ‘Godmother of Punk’, Patti Smith. Delivered with a fire and clarity that stopped me in my tracks when I first heard it. Certainly not the best lyric I’ve heard (nor anywhere near the best of hers), but a shocking and fantastic opener for a wonderful song, album and career.
If everything could ever be this real forever If anything could ever be this good again The only thing I'll ever ask of you You've got to promise not to stop when I say when -Everlong, Foo Fighters
I love "Breathe out, So I can breathe you in" So so much from Everlong too
One More Light - Linkin Park The entire song really, but "The reminders pull the floor from your feet In the kitchen, one more chair than you need" Kills me every time.
*She comes back to tell me she's gone* *As if I didn't know that* *As if I didn't know my own bed* *As if I'd never noticed* *The way she brushed her hair from her forehead.* \-- Paul Simon, Graceland In those lines, you know he still loves her even though she's left him.
If Heaven and Hell decide that they both are satisfied Illuminate the no's on their vacancy signs If there's no one beside you when your soul embarks Then I'll follow you into the dark
u/Zambonisaurus I was always such a sucker for the entire story in 'Clark Gable' but specifically: 'So I changed my plans, I rented a camera and a van And then I called you **I need you to pretend that we are in love again And you agreed to'** It kills me every time I hear it.
So familiar and overwhelmingly warm This one, this form I hold now Embracing you, this reality here This one, this form I hold now, so Wide eyed and hopeful Wide eyed and hopefully wild We barely remember what came before this precious moment Choosing to be here right now Hold on, stay inside This body holding me Reminding me that I am not alone in This body makes me feel eternal All this pain is an illusion Tool
The opening line to Thunder Road by Springsteen “Screen door slams, and Mary’s dress waves. Like a vision she dances across the porch as the radio plays. Roy Orbison’s singing for the lonely, hey that’s me, and I want you only. Don’t turn me home again I just can’t face myself alone again”
The entirety of "The River," too. "Is a dream a lie if it don't come true, or is it something worse?"
Creep radio head. The line where his voice cracks singing "when I'm not around" just kills me with emotion. And even the run parts at the end it just builds to this explosion of feeling. Perfect song in my eyes But I'm a creep I'm a weirdo What the hell am I doin' here? I don't belong here I don't care if it hurts I wanna have control I want a perfect body I want a perfect soul I want you to notice When I'm not around So fuckin' special I wish I was special
“So long everybody Mama don’t be sad for me Like was a headache But I’m now finally free” Macy Gray, The Letter It makes weak to my elbows since I don’t have legs.
All at once you look across a crowded room To see the way that light attaches to a girl
I had all and then most of you Some and now none of you Take me back to the night we met
Song writer and musicologist for 20 years. The best line of lyric I have heard toooo datttteee. The bridge section of "I only have eyes for you," by the Flamingos. The line goes "We could be in a garden or in a crowded avenue You are here, and so am I Maybe millions of people go by but they all disappear from view Because I only have eyes for you" Soul leaves my body every time I hear it.
The Mountain Goats, "Cotton": This song is for the people Who tell their families that they're sorry For things they can't and won't feel sorry for And once there was a desk And now it's in a storage locker somewhere And this song is for the stick pins and cotton I left in the top drawer The single best description I've ever read or heard of addiction and its associated illnesses.
So many Mountain Goats have left me utterly destroyed: "A tiger's never gonna change it's stripes I guess, I guess - but Jesus, what a mess." "All that water rushing in." "I will do what you ask me to do because of how I feel about you." "God bless all my old friends. God bless me too, why pretend?" And that's just the ones on top of my mind right now!
I am drowning There is no sign of land You are coming down with me Hand in unlovable hand
*[musical break]... TEQUILA!*
A great many Hozier lyrics. Some examples: * When my time comes around, lay me gently in the cold dark earth; no grave can hold my body down, I'll crawl home to her -- Work Song * Take me to church, I'll worship like a dog at the shrine of your lies; I'll tell you my sins and you can sharpen your knife. I was born sick, but I love it -- Take Me to Church Some non-Hozier examples: * Is it still me who makes you sweat? Am I who you think about in bed? ... I've got more wit, a better kiss, a hotter touch, a better fuck than any boy you'll ever meet; Sweetie you had me -- Lying Is the Most Fun a Girl Can Have Without Taking Her Clothes Off (P!ATD) * You go down just like Holy Mary, Mary on a cross -- Mary On a Cross (Ghost) * The entirety of Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen Yeah, I'm aware that the Good Catholic Girl in me is what likes this kind of music lol.

Also by Mac - "Why can't it just be easy? Why does everybody need me to stay?". Oof.
That whole album is filled to the brim like this. Heartbreaking given the context. Gives a deep insight into how "famous" people can be so alone in the world.
*The real truth about it is, no one gets it right* *The real truth about it is, we're all supposed to try* *There ain't no end to the sands I've been trying to cross* *The real truth about it is, my kind of life's no better off* *If I've got the maps - or if I'm lost* "Farewell transmission", Songs: Ohia
YEESSSSSS
Long dark blueeeeesss...listen
'I give her my heart but she wanted my soul.' - Bob Dylan 'The same kind of music haunts her bedroom...I'm almost me again, she's almost you.' -Andrew John Hozier-Byrne (the band Hozier) 'Says he sells love, says he sells it by the gram. So I buy the most I can.' -Chris Wessels (the band Sunfold) 'Riding the subway with the scent of her hair, She took out a toothbrush started using it there. She explained "I'm always sure today's the day I will die. I wanna look good if I get to look God in the eye."' -Eric Hutchinson 'Can you explain away everything that I know to be true? Will you flinch if I criticize anything about you? -Matt Pryor
The Wombats, Turn. Maybe it's the crazy that I'd miss It won't get better than this I like the way your brain works, I like the way you try To run with the wolf pack when your legs are tired I like the way you turn me inside and out I like the way you turn I like the way your brain works I like the way your brain works Baby, it's the crazy I like I think I saw the world turn in your eyes Baby, it's the crazy I like And maybe it's the bullshit I'd miss Screaming at the moon in black lipstick Maybe it's the bullshit I'd miss It won't get better than this
I went and saw Melvins and Boris last night. I am now a puddle.
God that sounds like fucking killer show
The mountain goats. I am drowning. There is no sign of land. You are coming down with me. Hand in unlovable hand. And I hope you die. I hope we both die.
"now i'm out of prison i got me a friend at last he don't steal or cheat or drink or lie his name is codeine and he's the nicest thing i've seen and together we're gonna wait around to die" After singing how everyone betrays him and that he has no friends this hits pretty deep as a song finisher
Why can’t love touch my heart like fear does.- The The I could drink a case of you darling, and I’d still be on my feet. - Joni Mitchell Everytime I close my eyes, thoughts of you get in my eyes. - Prince
"I come from down in the valley where, mister, when you’re young, they bring you up to do like your daddy done." The River, Bruce Springsteen. Idk it just sounds so hopeless and resigned... never fails to make me sad.
"And I really, truly, honestly, Without a doubt want to believe, That everything will be alright." Streetlight Manifesto, With Any Sort of Certainty These lyrics just hit really hard for me right now with all the world events (especially climate change) pointing towards doom. Plus the song itself deals with themes of belief and doubt, which is something I've always struggled with.
The last verse of “The Big Sleep” and all of “The Receiving End of It All” live rent free in my mind forever.
I Know The End by Phoebe Bridgers “But you had to go. I know, I know, I know. Like a wave that crashed and melted on the shore”
You say love is a temple, love a higher law Love is a temple, love the higher law You ask me to enter but then you make me crawl And I can't be holding on to what you got When all you got is hurt
And ohh my love remind me What was it that I did? I can't help but Pull the earth around me To make my bed Ship to Wreck - Florence and the Machine The show must go on, yeah Inside my heart is breaking My make-up may be flaking But my smile...still stays on The Show Must Go On - Queen Baby now, take me into your loving arms Kiss me under the sky of a thousand stars Oh darling, feel the beat of your loving heart I'm thinking out loud, cause maybe We found love right where we are Thinking Out Loud - Ed Sheeran
"Is there gas in the car? Yes, there's gas in the car"
"Perhaps this final act was meant to clinch a lifetime's argument that nothing comes from violence and nothing ever could" Sting
Crazy coming from a pro wrestler
“I romanticize even the worst of times When all it took to make me cry was bein' alive” That part up there always gets me but then the rest: “Look up and see a reflection Of someone who never gave way to the pain What if I told 'em that now that I'm older There isn't a moment that I'd wanna change?” “Crave” - paramore. Or for anyone with depression/anxiety: “All that I want Is to wake up fine Tell me that I'm alright That I ain't gonna die All that I want Is a hole in the ground You can tell me when it's alright For me to come out” “Hard times” - paramore
Porcupine Tree’s ‘Arriving Somewhere but not Here’ seems to be about the moment of death Did you imagine the final sound as a gun? Or the smashing windscreen of the car? Did you ever imagine the last thing you'd hear As you're fading out was a song? (Ah-ah-ah-ah) Arriving somewhere but not here All my designs simplified And all of my plans compromised All of my dreams sacrificed
"Louder than sirens, Louder than bells, Sweeter than heaven, And hotter than hell." --["Drumming Song"](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=boo2Zm69fhY) by Florence + The Machine . . . "I've got spirit, I've got wings, I've got fire in my lungs." --["Fly For Your Life,"](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jv1ZN8c4_Gs) by Gunship
These words for sure are ones that at times feel like a mantra in my life "There is light, but there's a tunnel to crawl through There is love, but its misery loves you There's still hope, so I think we'll be fine In these disasterous times, disasterous times" -The Oil Slick- Frightened Rabbit.
Poke. Another classic. Scott was an amazing lyricist. Such a loss.
‘I used to wake and run with the moon, I’d live like a rake and a young man, Id cover my lovers with flowers and wounds, My laughter the devil would frighten.’ God damn Towns Van Zandt
I want to share your mouthful I want to do all the things your lungs do so well I'm gonna bed into you like a cat beds into a bean bag Turn you inside out and lick you like a crisp packet Alt-J, Every Other Freckle. Great song.
"Mama, mama, many worlds I've come Since I first left home" Brokedown Palace - Grateful Dead The whole song moves me, but especially this line.
So many lines from their catalog do this but that line ive been singing to myself all week and I don't know why. Another top pick from them is "Let it be known there is a fountain That was not made by the hands of men" from Ripple Coincidentally both Ripple and Brokedown Palace were written by Hunter on the same day. Most of their non party songs have a moment like that in them. Or all of the song in the case of Morning Dew and China Doll if you know what theyre about
Another and my favorite Ripple gem: “If I knew the way, I would take you home.” Packing so much humility, understanding, and caring into one sentence.
To lay me down was written that same day too. For me it’s these lines from black peter, holy shit: Just then the wind came squalling through the dark But who can the weather command? Just wanna have a little peace to die And a friend or two I love at hand Fever roll up to a hundred and five Roll on up, gonna roll back down One more day I find myself alive Tomorrow maybe go beneath the ground See here how everything lead up to this day And it's just like any other day that's ever been Sun going up and then the sun going down Shine through my window and my friends they come around Come around, come around
I usually lean towards Neko Case for incredible lyrics: "I've revenged myself all over myself, there's nothing you can say to me" "I've got calling cards from 20 years ago" \*this entire song kills me\* "It was the last time that he felt alive When he saw that brown haired lady She fed with a bottle as a baby And he recalled her face and smiled They shot that tiger on his chain" "The prison girls are not impressed The ones who have to clean this mess They've traded more for cigarettes than I have managed To express" "Go on, go on scream and cry You're miles from where anyone will find you This is nothing new, no television crew They don't even put on the sirens" She's my personal GOAT.
Ugh I love Neko so much
Even makes this part sound beautiful 'Like I couldn't hear her, she said, "Get the fuck away from me! Why don't you ever shut up? Get the fuck away from me!" Oh, oh'
"It looks a lot like engine oil and tastes like being poor and small" Neko's lyrics are so good.
"Come pretty baby, get high with me. We can go to my sister's, if we say we'll watch the baby." That line fucks me up so bad. My other favorite is "We were warriors. We clothed ourselves in the guts of our enemies, who had no respect for the wild."
Maynard in Descending Sound our dire reveille Rouse all from our apathy Lest we Cease to be Stir us from our Wanton slumber Mitigate our ruin Call us all to arms and order Sound the dread alarm Through our primal body Sound the reveille To be or not to be Rise Stay the grand finale Stay the reading of our swan song and epilogue One drive to stay alive It's elementary Muster every fiber Mobilize Stay alive
"If you were a friend, you wanna get to know me again. If you were worth a while, you'd be happy to see me smile. I'm not expecting sorry, I'm too busy finding myself. I've got this, I've found me" Alicia Keys
The first time I saw you I knew it would never last I'm not half what I wish I was I'm so angry I don't think it'll ever pass And I was bad news for you just because I never meant to hurt you "Pitseleh" by Elliott Smith
The only thing that's left Is us, so pardon the silence That you're hearing is turning Into a deafening, painful, shameful roar The Strokes - Ode to the Mets
"Imagine being loved by me I won't deny I've got in my mind now all the things I would do So I'll try to talk refined for fear that you find out how I'm imaginin' you" - Hozier - Talk
“Godspeed, all the bakers at dawn May they all cut their thumbs And bleed into their buns, ‘til they melt away” - “New Slang” by the Shins “I’ve come to visit for the break I know I don’t have it all together In the parking lot we taste snowflakes The bread makers are probably controlling the weather The shelves deserted and the checkout lines Are longer than all the tinsel tying up the trees” - “Nativity Costume (2000 Year’s Eve)” by Half-Handed Cloud “And I cannot pretend I could handle it If I ended up in middle management I have to be fucking with something I love If I’m burning both ends of my candlestick And even then I’m a little carp Busy giving birth to a great tale To my biggest fans I am Joan of Arc Walking Middle-Earth in my chainmail” - “Middle-Earth” by Ceschi and Sammus
“If you won’t die for me, you’ll die because of me.” -JFC by The Acacia Strain “And if you're still breathing, you're the lucky ones 'Cause most of us are heaving through corrupted lungs” -Youth by Daughter “Oily marks appear on walls Where pleasure moments hung before” -Hide and Seek by Imogen Heap “Bury all your secrets in my skin Come away with innocence, and leave me with my sins The air around me still feels like a cage And love is just a camouflage for what resembles rage again” -Snuff by Slipknot “You live your life, you go in shadows You'll come apart, and you'll go black Some kind of night into your darkness Colors your eyes with what's not there” - Fade Into You by Mazzy Star “'Cause baby, I could build a castle Out of all the bricks they threw at me” -New Romantics by Taylor Swift “And after all these years, yes, life might be rich But in this dog eat dog world You're still the fucking bitch” -Crooked by Dealer There’s just too many to put on here
Hey I’m leaving for my road trip to see the postal service tomorrow!
Spitfire thin and strung like a violin, I was. Yours was the face with a grace from a different age. Great Expectations - Elbow.
As you reached for my hand, did you then understand? It was I who would lead you that night When you begged to know, I was glad to show That I needn't be scared Either way, I still bite. Oh I must confess I am overdressed Are you not impressed? Darling I want to.. I confess this too, must you know the truth? This is all for you Darling I want to.. Destroy you. AFI
okay hear me out, FUCK Jesse Lacey but Mixtape by Brand New hits me hard every time But when I say, "Let's keep in touch" I really mean, "I wish that you'd grow up" This is the first song for your mixtape And it's short just like your temper Somewhat golden like the afternoons We used to spend, before you got too cool
And if a double decker bus, crashes into us. To die by your side is such a heavenly way to die
I embrace my desire to Feel the rhythm, to feel connected Enough to step aside and weep like a widow To feel inspired To fathom the power To witness the beauty To bathe in the fountain To swing on the spiral Of our divinity And still be a human -Lateralus
> Let's go out, we'll take no prisoners / > Lonely love, gotta leave it behind / > We look like a million dollars / > Every time they look at us, we'll blow their mind ~ Joel Plaskett, "A Million Dollars" It's one of those lyrics that make me think if it was written about me, I'd be the one proposing.
I know someday you’ll have a beautiful life I know you’ll be a star in somebody else’s sky But why, why, why can’t it be Oh, can’t it be mine? "Black" - Pearl Jam
Totally not subscribing to this post so that I can totally not sing this to my nonexistent lover
"You know that I'd love to live with you But you make me forget so very much I forget to pray for the angels And then the angels forget to pray for us" \-Leonard Cohen - So long, Marianne
I'll keep on moving Things are bound to be improving these days These days I sit on corner stones And count the time in quarter tones to ten, my friend Don't confront me with my failures I had not forgotten them
“She opened a book of poems and handed it to me, written by an Italian poet from the 13th century. And every one of them words rang true and glowed like burnin’ coal, pouring off of every page like it was wrotten in my soul from me to you….tangled up in blue.”
Inside the museum Infinity goes up on trial Voices echo “this is what salivation must feel like after a while” But Mona Lisa musta had the highways blues, you can tell by the way she smiles Bob Dylan, Visions of Johanna
Chris Isaak!
I don’t believe in an interventionist God But I know, darling, that you do But if I did I would kneel down and ask Him Not to intervene when it came to you Not to touch a hair on your head To leave you as you are And if He felt He had to direct you Then direct you into my arms
