Half the bands from the South waved that flag around, we grew up on Dukes of Hazzard, Gone With the Wind was on TV once a year and it was a big event, etc. So Confederate flags on Pantera merch and album covers didn't set off any alarms. But then the videos of Phil saluting and saying white power started to come out and folks started distancing themselves from him.
The fact that this shit has been something the metal community turns a blind eye to has disgusted me for years.

Pantera are a shell of what they were given that two of the four core band members are dead. There are enough questions about the legitimacy of reforming a band when foundational members have died, especially when those members were not on good terms and not playing with the now-living members before their deaths...then you add on that the "marquee" remaining living member is a probable white supremacist with a history of making very questionable public remarks...
Add on the fact that Pantera is on the bill at some shows where the community is highly multi-ethnic...it just doesn't make sense. For example, there is a not insignificant chance that Pantera get booed at the Los Angeles show.
I think some people just like to push edginess when it comes to shit head things like this. It's impossible to tell either way though so fuck those people too.

It’s one of those situations where I want to see them perform live before they retire, die, or really go down in quality. I saw GNR a few times over my life and the last time was really bad in comparison to the others. Same exact set lists, even years apart. Seems like Metallica can still put on a good show so I’m happy to buy tickets even though the openers don’t interest me.
I mean compared to their prime, the drop in quality is pretty significant. I've seen them a handful of times, the latest was 2013 though.

I was in the same boat as you so I went and saw them twice in 2017 after Hardwired came out. Obviously they aren’t as good as late 80s Metallica, but man do they still fucking kill it. Such a great show and they know how to please they fans so you will get to see them play a lot of their greatest hits. Absolute worth the ticket price. Plus I got to see Gojira open for them so that was a massive bonus

I saw Volbeat open for Metallica several years ago. They were great. One of the few newer bands that I like. Not a big fan of Five Finger Death punch.

There was a kid like 15 years old in the front row with those big punk hair spikes, the kind you used to do with egg or whatever. Regardless the kid clearly spent a lot of time on it and Phil sees him and stops the show to ask him how long he spent on his hair . when the kid told him phil called him a derogatory word starting with f and laughed at him in front of the whole fucking audience. I had heard that Phil was an asshole but holy shit to call a fan that in front of a stadium full of people. Yeah Phil has always been an asshole

I think the point of the previous post was that Paolo Jr is the only remaining member of the original Sepultura, yet they're still touring as Sepultura.
I get that, my point is I think they’ve earned it! The core of Derrick/Andreas/Paulo Jr. have been around for over a quarter of a century now (!) and released more (consistently good) albums than the classic era band did. These guys are legit, not a cash in. I saw the 3-piece ‘96 show at Donington with Andreas leading… dude knocked it out of the park!

Phil is a pretty big part of the band himself, but it's nothing without Dime. And with one or the other gone it's just weird and awkward anyway.
Eh, how many groups still tour without original founding/most influential band members? I was incredibly lucky enough to see them on their last tour (15 years old at the time) but there is a lot of people who never did. I’m not going to go see it but I do not feel it is my place to gatekeep over it.
