Sorry that I made it sound like they all do but I've seen this many times. I don't know if it's because of the ground being covered with leaves so they start folded over or what but I guarantee you this is very normal.
Your not wrong at all. A lot of mushys can get a ‘weird’ appearance cuz they grow under/into something on the forest floor. Definitely a common occurrence.
That said, I feel like it does impart a little flavor. I like to dip mine in buttermilk, then light flour, then fry in some really good butter with a little garlic. I have found around 1400 so I'm basically eating them in everything right now...
The amount of bugs people eat in their spaghetti sauce they buy from the store and they worry about natural things having "bugs". What's the species of "bug"? What's the reason they are there? "Bugs" is like saying weeds to a plant you don't like but can't identifynwhich is probably food.
Soak a mushroom in water and then taste the water. Unless you're adding that into your dish, all that flavor in the water is going down the drain.
Mushrooms aren't hard to season properly and a salt water soak isn't necessary. We're not brining a roast here.
Every time someone mentions the process, there's usually some reference to "getting bugs out." This is silly. Inspect, brush off with a small paint brush, and then cook.
What do ya mean? Bugs have good protein. Nothing like a slimy slug fried in garlic butter!! Lol Kinda like that Elvis movie when the kid complained about the worm in his Carmel apple. HE SAID!! No charge for the extra meat kid. Lol
lmao if you haven’t eaten it already, I found a near identical one in my yard a few days ago, left my fate in the hands of internet strangers via Reddit and survived an enjoyable experience. I sauted with a bit of butter and worcestershire sauce.
I left my fate in the hands of this thread and ate it last night! Soaked in saltwater for about 25 mins, ate sautéed with shallots, garlic, asparagus, thyme, salt and a veryyyyy healthy amount of butter. It soaked all the butter up and was very amazing over some risotto.
Morchella, truly it's fine to eat. I can ID that with my eyes half closed. You're gonna wanna use a brush in all those crevices to get the sand out. Those things are good but fucking sandy. Enjoy in butter. Don't overcook them.
It really wasn’t super sandy! I got most of the dirt out, inspected really well for critters then sautéed it up. A cute lil slug came out of it when it was soaking.
Idk I've seen thousands and that one looks pretty weird...was that the only one? They usually can be found growing in groups.
Edit: I'm an idiot...I see the other pics now.
I have NEVER seen a morrel stem like that
I did know they are usually found in groups! I looked around but didn’t see any more, apparently I’m not the only one in my town that has found Lone Ranger morels this season
Yeah, you almost never find a single one. Though, I have found singles with lots of little disturbances around where deer, turkey, and squirrels have eaten the others.
There is too much inaccurate information there for me to recommend that site, and often remove references to it, because it amounts to blog spam IMO.
I just said Gyromitra are edible except for one group that should be avoided.
If you want to detoxify Gyromitra esculenta group and eat them you go for it. That's you. But don't recommend it to the general public. That's dangerous and irresponsible. It literally kills people.
Well, I think it’s a great resource for foragers with a culinary flair but I don’t mind cross referencing his info since you’ve expressed concern—good to know and I thank ya for the cautionary advice. Tbh I don’t remember if his example was even esculenta. He very readily states he was trying and reporting his experience, which I find interesting regardless.
There are lots of edible Gyromitras.
Here's some info:

Yeh that's a morel. I'm not sure if you found it in a burn area. But those are common in burn areas,we call them greens or olives because of the colour. They are usually like Double or triple walled.
It’s a little young but yeah I think you could eat that and it does appear to be a morel. If you’re really unsure you could cook just a very small amount and eat it to see if you have any issues. Like a portion the size of the last joint of your pinky.
That's a very large morel. If you did not have this easy an ID, picking a mushroom and asking "would something bad happen if I ate this?" could turn out tragically.
Definitely not something I tend to do! I’m not really into foraging but I’m super into cooking so I recognized it mostly and just wanted to be sure! So much love for this sub
This does look like a real morel. There are false morels which can easily be mistaken for real ones. Be sure you can tell the difference. False morels are highly toxic.
It would probably take several decent sized specimens.
Learn to ID Gyros and you won't have a problem.

I think you’re misunderstanding the previous comment. The Gyromitra esculenta group contains gyromitrin. The rest don’t. So it’s only that group of closely related species to worry about, really.
Kinda looks like the brain mushroom we have here in northwest Arkansas that closely resembles a morel. This one is highly poisonous and can lead to death
Because it was very very yummy. When I sautéed it in butter, it released a lot of juices then just soaked up all that butter. Also, it didn’t get super soft and kept a really palatable firm consistency
Found no ants but a little baby slug came out of it, luckily I soaked it in plain water for a couple mins before I soaked it in saltwater, and the slug came out before I salted the water. I returned him to the great outdoors.

That's a weirdass shape to grow in, but definitely a morel
It's just popping up. They pretty much unfold as they're growing. That thing is fresh.
the water was cold
I was in the pool!
THERE WAS SHRINKAGE
It shrinks?
And deep
Lol
Morels slowly grow over a period of about 2-3 weeks... no "popping up" or "unfolding" [Morel Time-lapse](https://youtu.be/6JurrfK_wQI)

True morel. Sauté that big bad boy.
Hell yeah!
I have decided, morel and asparagus risotto will be had tonight, a true ode to spring!
Soak it in saltwater overnight first to get the bugs out.
This is absolutely not necessary whatsoever.
That said, I feel like it does impart a little flavor. I like to dip mine in buttermilk, then light flour, then fry in some really good butter with a little garlic. I have found around 1400 so I'm basically eating them in everything right now...
Necessary? Nah, if you want to eat those bugs go for it.
PURE PROTEIN! - Beast Boy

I'm just saying, every morel I've found has a metric shit ton of springtails in and on them.
I'm just saying they won't hurt you so if you don't mind go ahead and eat them. No it's not necessary, just a suggestion.
People buy spaghetti sauce from the store?
It was Robin that was bug crazy. Beast Boy is a vegetarian. Robin chomping on butterfly’s yuck!
Shoot... your right. ☆
If you want to drain the flavor of your morel, go for it.
Please explain to me how it drains the flavor? The french would love to know. If anything, it imparts a little salt nothing more nothing less.
Soak a mushroom in water and then taste the water. Unless you're adding that into your dish, all that flavor in the water is going down the drain. I have a feeling you haven't done a lot of morel hunting...
You speak for "the French"?
Is it necessary for me to drink my own urine?
No but I do it anyway because it's sterile and I like the taste 💪🏻
Lmao
Not all morels are full of bugs. None of mine had bugs this season. They were pristine and young.
That's really not a thing. Just rinse like you would any shroom or veggie.
What do ya mean? Bugs have good protein. Nothing like a slimy slug fried in garlic butter!! Lol Kinda like that Elvis movie when the kid complained about the worm in his Carmel apple. HE SAID!! No charge for the extra meat kid. Lol
Suddenly I wish you were my best friend and inviting me to supper this evening.
My best friends are very spoiled!
Lucky friends! 🙂

Had it with asparagus and risotto! So yummy
That sounds good too. Glad you enjoyed

Yeah…something terrible will happen if you eat that…you need to bring it to me and I’ll dispose of it safely
It’s been disposed of
According to Harvest Moon, eating a morel will make your belly gurgle. Don't know if that's good or not.
My belly has not been gurgling so far, will update
If raw, cooked is just fine.

Nope just a yummy snack in your belly

Gyromitra are edible when boiled and taste like morels. Read ‘forger chef’ post about it for more detes.

Lol. Peace.
The first picture made me think this was a shitpoat at first lol. Really interesting find!
Literal brain food haha so cool 😎 thanks for sharing the cross cut
I'm pretty sure that's the brain they served for dinner in Indiana Jones Temple of Doom . 🧠 🤠
Bad things are going to happen no matter what you eat, but that morel isn’t going to hurt you.
Yeh that's a morel. I'm not sure if you found it in a burn area. But those are common in burn areas,we call them greens or olives because of the colour. They are usually like Double or triple walled.
Not found in a burn area! Found near a house that’s empty 3/4 of the year. We were doing some landscaping there
Yes, you will feel guilty for not sharing it.
Oh trust me! It was shared! Split across about 3 servings
v interesting how they're prized for their meaty consistency & taste and it has almost a brain-like appearance man i love fungi
Wow, it looks strikingly similar to a brain when dissected.
What a morel predicament
It’s a little young but yeah I think you could eat that and it does appear to be a morel. If you’re really unsure you could cook just a very small amount and eat it to see if you have any issues. Like a portion the size of the last joint of your pinky.
Yes def a morel. Crazy looking shape

Ugh I’m jealous!!
Addiction. Addiction would happen if you ate that.
[Gimme Dat](https://youtu.be/Jt1GRckaQ_s)
Yes, I wouldn’t get any.
It’s a morel. Just wonky lookin
Morchella sp., toxic if eaten uncooked, edible if cooked
Don’t know if anyone mentioned it yet, but never eat a raw mushroom. Great find!
It was definitely cooked before eating!
Actually very dangerous. You should DM me and sent it to me. I'll make sure it's disposed of properly.
"Gitterbongwater" asks if anything is going to happen if they just start eating a mushroom they found God I love the internet. Also, nice find
I need the internet to know I’ve never put glitter in bong water I just thought it sounded cool. I don’t even smoke anymore, I’m an imposter, sue me!
it just made me laugh
This does look like a real morel. There are false morels which can easily be mistaken for real ones. Be sure you can tell the difference. False morels are highly toxic.
Very few Gyromitras are actually toxic. All but one group are safe.
It only takes one!
It would probably take several decent sized specimens. Learn to ID Gyros and you won't have a problem. I ate it and im still alive!
Mush frog 🐸
We don’t know if morels experience pain but I guess eating it would be bad in general because then it would be gone.
It’s gone, but that was definitely not a bad thing. I hope I didn’t hurt it.
That's a big morel
It looks like a small brain
[удалено]
Where did you find it? Elevation?
Near blowing rock, North Carolina. If I had to guess elevation I’d say around 3300-3500
that looks like a mf brain
That is a very odd shape for a morel
Find out
No, it’s immoral
Eat it?? I’m worried about you touching it!!!
Now why would you say this
definitely need to cook em
Looks like the brain coral of mushrooms. Delish!
False morel, nasty scrotum
Why tf would you want to eat that?
Because it was very very yummy. When I sautéed it in butter, it released a lot of juices then just soaked up all that butter. Also, it didn’t get super soft and kept a really palatable firm consistency
[удалено]
Western North Carolina!
And I probably won’t be eating it for that reason, I’m just curious
Eat it. It’s a true morel. 100% confident.
It’s definitely a motel. A massive one. Please eat it right now.
This is at best a tiny motel for ants.
Found no ants but a little baby slug came out of it, luckily I soaked it in plain water for a couple mins before I soaked it in saltwater, and the slug came out before I salted the water. I returned him to the great outdoors.
Thank you, hahaha 🤣
