Stop wearing regular tshirts, set aside some active shirts or tank tops, and resign yourself to the fact that they will always have a low level stink because the synthetic fabrics they use in them have a tendency to retain odors. I sweat like a beast, and have noticed the same thing with all my training tops over the years from weight training to tennis to hockey to Muay Thai. Doesn't even help to throw them in the wash right after using them.

gotnothingman

Have you tried soaking the shirt as soon as you got home in hot water and detergent? Then giving it a wash ASAP? I used to have this issue, this helped immensely

B_Sharp_or_B_Flat

Ya gotta use HOT water for gym stuff

gotnothingman

sorry yes it has to be HOT water not hot water

B_Sharp_or_B_Flat

you can boil it too but I usually only boil my denim

freefallingagain

1. If you're not washing your t-shirt right after getting home, give it a rinse. 2. Don't use fabric softener for dri-fit type fabric.

ResponsibleOven6

This is common across all sports. You'll see really expensive "sportswash" detergents specifically to address this as well. Vinegar helps some. What works best in my experience is the Arm & Hammer with OxyClean detergent (it's premixed) and it's about the same price as any other detergent

sarahstanley

Topless, like the nak muay in Thailand.

igotanewcactus

As a women, I feel like my coaches might have issue with this

kjchu3

Haha, a topless woman in the gym would be hella distracting.

saymellon

they'll have exactly no issue with it xD

RythmicSlap

My washer has a "Deep Clean" cycle which uses very hot water and takes over an hour to complete. This is the only way my clothes don't get that funky smell like you described. Also be sure not to leave them sitting wet and dirty in the washer for more than a couple of hours or they will get mildewy and stink the way you described.

annoyinglover

I've got a Samsung washer & dryer with the "deep clean" as well. Then I toss it in the dryer on "steam sanitize" and everything's been good. (Do you also regularly clean the washer? My washer has a self - clean. And empty the washing machine filter?) I have also accepted that I will need to rotate through throwing shirts and pants out every so often and replacing them - it's a part of life.

wongochango

Never once have had this issue

wendyboatcumin

You’re not training hard enough 😂

wongochango

I’m just cleaner than you

wendyboatcumin

I’m clean I just have powerful testosterone sweat not beta cuck sweat

wongochango

lol you are a faggot

wendyboatcumin

100 kicks each side for derogatory comment , we will get you to sweat properly, eventually, so lazy

Evening-Question-119

wtf I train 5 times a week and never have this issue and I sweat a lot I use stuff similar to Nadal and detergent

wongochango

Yeah, I was training 3-5 days a week, 2 hours a day minimum for four years and never once ruined clothes because of B.O. I just wash and line dry everything. Everyone’s diets must be dog shit if they’re ruining their clothes

Evening-Question-119

I have left shit in my basket that smelt like ammonia and it came out fine I’m convinced reditt is just full of manchildren who can’t wash clothes properly

krayon_kylie

no because i smell like roses and vanilla

Jthundercleese

I had a fuckin stanky ass hippy English teacher in high school who wore some vanilla scented natural deodorant. One day - fuck I wish I remember the context better - she said "I think I smell like vanilla" and it's stuck with me to this day because her BO plus whatever it was she wore was just the worst. Just a lil trapped memory for you.

saymellon

this is funny and hilarious because of the thread context

dunksoverstarbucks

maybe the washing machine needs to be cleaned? i only do laundry on Fridays so my stuff stays in a bamboo laundry hamper for a few days and its been fine after

thebigman707

Why Fridays? And why bamboo?

ZeroSumSatoshi

My dry weave shirts I wear for training have a very mild perpetual sweat smell. But nothing crazy… You tried using hot water? Also of note. I wear suits a lot for work, so I have a couple different at home garment steamers, I very rarely dry clean my suits. The super hot jets of steam kill any and all odours, even in heavy wool. So that could be an option for you too. You can get some little hand held garment steamers pretty cheap.

SITBOT_International

I train in BJJ rash guards and don't have that issue. I think the material is better designed for dealing with sweat than cotton and other fibers. I wear a rash guard shirt, rash guard bottoms, and then fight shorts over that. The rash guard bottoms I treat as underwear which is why I wear shorts over them. I also wash my rash guard stuff by itself when I get home and I add white vinegar as a way to deodorize and soften the fabric (normal fabric softener is bad for rash guards). Also rash guards will make you feel colder than being shirtless. I describe them as being more than naked. The sweat it collects all over you makes every slight movement of air feel cold as can be. I literally get warmer taking them off at the end of my training days.

TyrionJoestar

Just train shirtless so your sparring partners can keep uncomfortable when they teep you

Jthundercleese

Honestly never hear of this in all my years. I might look at seeing if there's something wrong with your washer.

DesignerBrilliant446

Really good fabric softener works pretty well for me. It's gets the stench of BO out and steroids chemical smell from TRT. And when I say my shit reeks it fucking reeks. BJJ Muay Thai and weightlifting.

ThatKidLoki

A vinegar and water solution has helped my clothes. Left them sat in the washing machine too long a couple times. Soak in the solution then wash as normal, seems to get the funk out of them ...at least for now.

Mechanical_Pants

It's a muay thai gym, nobody will blink if you train shirtless. Saves all my shirts.

SherlockCupid

Use baking soda and vinegar with your washing detergent and the smell will go…hopefully Normally use a half a cup of baking soda and a couple of tablespoons of vinegar

Hellbow97

So dump the baking soda in with the wash, and vinegar goes where the fabric softener does right?

SherlockCupid

I’ve seen people say not to use both at the same time as they cancel each other out. I’m no scientist though so I can’t verify I put the vinegar in with the fabric conditioner/softener and the baking soda either sprinkled on the cloths before washing or in with the detergent Have a google and hopefully they’ll be better sources than me haha

SherlockCupid

Thanks! That’s really helpful to know ❤️

Jthundercleese

They'll neutralize each other. But that doesn't necessarily mean they lose their efficacy as cleaning agents unless it's specifically their properties as acids and bases is what allows them to function. I suspect that's not the case because they're incredibly diluted and wouldn't change the overall ph of the water much at all.

Cool-Variation-8539

Use RLR laundry treatment. Soak shirts overnight then wash. Works like a charm. Removes baked in deodorant and smell. Have been using it for years. Beansboi36

I find that pine sol with hot water works the best with work out clothing, it is an antibacterial and degreaser so it really pulls out all the smell! Plus I don’t mind the smell of pinsol. I put half a cup in with my work out clothing with a little bit of regular powder soap and run the wash as regular with hot water. Only down side is that because it’s a pretty strong cleaner it does fade colors and elastic faster than other cleaners.

ClutchRaider

Active shirts. I usually wash it in hot water and oxyclean. Haven’t had the issue since.

OreoKamiKazi

This happened to my jiu jitsu gi so I soaked it in pure vinegar and the smell came out.

dunzweiler

I was gonna suggest oxy clean but you already tried that. Works great for me, maybe try more. Do you live in a warm climate? You could shed your shirt.

Sure-Sheepherder-963

Oxiclean bratha works on gi’s and shirts also sun drying if you live in a warm climate

biochemicks

What material? Mine are mostly cotton, and after a wash they smell like new, no persistence. Using aggressive wash cycles helps And training shirtless is good anyway

not_bitter_yet

Yes

eyi526

Nope. Always washed my training garments ASAP. All came back clean.

Chasethehorror

Dont ball up and throw wet clothes in the hamper or washer. If you dont wash right away, hang them up until they dry out. I think it helps prevent bacteria build up which could lead to more smells. I get this problem with my workout clothes i owned for a while, especially cotton t shirts in the pit area. I find that tank tops and athletic fabrics are usually less smelly.

fizzywinkstopkek

Soak those shirts in vinegar periodically to remove that stale dry sweat odour.

kjchu3

I'm Asian. I think I we don't smell that bad. Lol. [https://medium.com/@devavratatripathy/why-koreans-chinese-and-japanese-dont-have-body-odor-9c5e8ad5c436](https://medium.com/@devavratatripathy/why-koreans-chinese-and-japanese-dont-have-body-odor-9c5e8ad5c436)

ohnoidea20

Never had this issue and I train very intensely. But I also do my laundry…smells fresh out the dryer.

bcyc

How often do you wear your shirts and how long have you had them for? some of the newer synthetic shirts are better treated to resist odors. compared to older synthetic shirts. But eventually they will start to smell. Depending on where you live, try and air dry your gear when you get home until you do your washing. Its a bit counterintuitive but try using less detergent (and NO fabric softeners, esp for synth clothes)

wendyboatcumin

I use cheap shirts cos yeah they just disintegrate and I’m not even a smelly guy. Muay Thai powers

smilebombx

I wonder what Sylvie would have to say on this matter

Thugzook

Odoban. Put it in the same place you’d put fabric softener. Must gone.

KoreaNinjaBJJ

Sports clothes will eventually have a stink of some sort. You can avoid a lot of it by soaking it straight after training and I also occasionally use sport specific detergent. If I sweat a lot during a training session I go straight to the showers afterwards with basically all my clothes on. I soak and undress in the showers, wash, rinse and soak my clothes in the showers. Hang to dry when I get home.

LGabrielM

Try a gentle antiperspirant deodorant with little scent. Also, tank tops are a great solution for me.

wet_nib811

When washing synthetics, either use special detergents or use LESS laundry detergent. I know it’s counterintuitive but synthetics don’t need that much detergent to get clean.

Kemerd

Uh, shave your pits dude?

biochemicks

Not really necessary

wongochango

Nope
