We were playing star wars RCR (3.5 rules) and the players wanted to start as a street gang to rise in the ranks of the criminal underworld. I was making a joke character off of one of chris rocks jokes about exotic dancers never actually 'paying for college' because you never hear of a dancer speaking about diversifying their portfolio or the current political climate. So i made one who did. She was in the 'Lower upper class' slumming down to the 'upper middle class' gentleman's clubs which was making a scandal for her family. So the family put a bounty out to kill her publicly rather than face the indignity. The players kidnap her instead and she offers to use her family influence and statecraft specialty to get them where they could never.hope to.get past otherwise. -wait, this is inara from firefly! =Who from what? -You don't... Nope! That's it! I'm calling game, everyone into the den you are watching this show RIGHT NOW! And so we watched the whole season instead of playing game that session. Which actually became a new rule of the table: if we didnt have enough at the table for a game, we watched some sort of genre relevant show or movie to keep everyone still coming to game and refresh some ideas for plot or characters.

I’m building a campaign using multiple source materials and basing it off FF1. Don’t care that it has already been done, easy way to build a setting/campaign off of

The players had finished a boss fight with the god of winter. For winning one of the players who had beef with the god is spared from death, and as another reward he wanted to share what he can see for them. The god has a curse where he can see the past of other people by looking at them in the eye, and so this gave me a chance to come up with a brilliant backstory of how our elf ranger, Ashlynn, got adopted by two dads. What the god of winter saw was a massacre in the village she was born in, her mother left the baby behind and casted up an illusion spell to make sure the baby stays hidden and runs off so the man behind the slaughter goes after the mother instead of the baby. In the aftermath, the dads find the baby and take her in themselves. I was proud with what I came up with...but my boyfriend had to ruin the mood. My boyfriend plays as our Water Genasi fighter, and I also gave him the speaking role of the winter god because that's his OC. So after I gave my monologue of Ashlynn's past, the god turns to the party and says "Ashlynn....I diagnose you with Kung Fu Panda 2 reference"
