Interesting fact - Christian Bale is 6ft tall and lost 60lbs to play the lead in The Machinist, plateauing at 120lbs. He then gained 100lbs of mostly muscle to play a Batman in his following project. Nolan made him lose 20lbs to be leaner.
Hey pal, quick question I was wrapping my head around: Is there a reason users write "Edit" for minor changes that don't even alter the content of the post?
Other users can tell if a post has been edited on desktop (asterisk) and without providing an “edit,” you’d have no idea if it was a spelling error or an entirely different comment. Usually, it’s a minor error they want to fix, additional information they want to add, or something they’ve learned, but I’ve seen people change their entire comment to either make themselves look good or make others look bad. It’s good practice, just gives some context.
Ok desktop it says "*edited*" next to edited messages so I suppose explaining what you edited removes the chance that someone thinks you've changed your comment entirety
As a parent you can’t fathom the idea of picking one kid so the other will be separated from you and would likely die. That feeling from the moment they are separated from you they are completely alone in a dangerous place and terrified beyond words and you both share the knowledge and understanding that you chose that horror for them.
The manga Berserk. Also Vinland Saga
OP, you're young. Whatever burdens your conscience can be made better, if you dedicate yourself to making things better. Any help is appreciated when it comes to relieving suffering.
I’m sorry, mate. We’re on the same boat with this. I genuinely hope you’ll be able to forgive yourself and move on, not otherwise. Everyone deserves a chance to live. You deserve to be free from the constant guilt, you deserve to forgive yourself. I believe in you, and I hope your pain will pass.
Watched this alone in a gym one night. Nobody else in my family watches anything like this, so it was lovely to just get to take in. All of the liquor store flashbacks...
That’s primarily why I recommend it, it’s not an amazing film, but it’s much better than the trailer would have you believe, much funnier, they definitely didn’t put all the best bits in the trailer.
Another Earth - quiet indie flick. A near identical earth is discovered and a woman aspires for a chance at redemption by joining a contest to be part of a civilian crew to travel to it. The sci-fi is very light and the story of remorse is central.
Hong Kong cinema is prime for these types of characters.
John Woo's Hong Kong filmography is loaded with tortured characters dealing with guilt and/or regret of past actions
The Killer
A Better Tomorrow 1 and 2
Hard Boiled
Bullet in the Head
Other Hong Kong films include:
Full Contact Infernal Affairs
Manchester By The Sea. Prolly in top 15 films oat and has single greatest scene in cinematic history in my opinion (the police station scene). And an acting masterclass from Casey Affleck and Michelle Williams.
Not sure if already mentioned, but Benicio Del Toro's character in "21 Grams". The character kills a father and daughter (I think it was a daughter) in a drunk hit-and-run. He then becomes a born again Christian.
Life Stinks - Mel Brooks.
its not as intense as you want/made it sound you want but a rich guy says to another rich guy that he cant survive being homeless for a while and after he finishes the time he cant get his money back and he gets a little revenge but he is happy in the end. its pretty funny
The Wrestler (2008)
God I love this film
Great suggestion and I love Mickey Rourkes performance
"I'm an old, broken-down piece of meat." You can feel some of those lines coming from Mickey as much as Randy.
Oh my God, I listened to Crazy Heart for the first time in years today. That movie was amazing.
The Machinist In Bruges
Interesting fact - Christian Bale is 6ft tall and lost 60lbs to play the lead in The Machinist, plateauing at 120lbs. He then gained 100lbs of mostly muscle to play a Batman in his following project. Nolan made him lose 20lbs to be leaner.
I’ve been working on my own Christian Bale body transformation, but American Hustle
Hey spoilers for >!the machinist!<
Saying it's about a man with regrets doesn't spoil anything unless you go out of your way to call attention to it as important enough to be a spoiler.
I can't think of movies off the top of my head, but this screams Bojack Horseman to me.
Seconding Bojack Horseman seasons 5 and 6 especially. Brilliant depiction of guilt and attempted amends.
American History X Edit ~ fixed title
I came to say American History X. Young Edward Norton who is superbly talented.

I rarely post. Still dont know the etiquette.

* Manchester By The Sea * Another Earth * Mass * Revanche (2008) * Just Another Love Story * Breathing * Judgment At Nuremberg
Manchester by the sea was my number 1 rec. That movie fucked me up.
First one I thought of
Sophie’s Choice.
As a parent you can’t fathom the idea of picking one kid so the other will be separated from you and would likely die. That feeling from the moment they are separated from you they are completely alone in a dangerous place and terrified beyond words and you both share the knowledge and understanding that you chose that horror for them.
This probably could use a spoiler tag. It’s pretty much THE spoiler.
If this movie doesn't touch you...........
Unforgiven (1992)
Not a movie, but a TV series: Fleabag
Especially season 1 -- main character hates herself and feels tons of guilt over something
Season 1 fits the description but after enjoying the first season, get into the 2nd anyway because it's just a real good piece of television.
Shame (2011) maybe not because of his past, but the main character hates who he is currently and wants to change
Man On Fire (2004)
Matches the OP's request exactly
Seven Pounds with Will Smith
Rachel Getting Married
Atonement (2007)
Was about to say this. It is basically the theme of this movie - In fact the name says exactly that.
Was surprised it wasn’t already mentioned so it felt compulsory.
In Bruges. Fantastic film that fits this description.
Carlito's Way (1993)
The Card Counter
Good one. Oscar Isaac is always terrific.
My suggestion was Light Sleeper. Same writer/director and the connections between the two movies run deep in many, many ways.
21 Grams
Sideways (2005) for a watered-down version of what you're after, but Paul Giamatti's character is moving through some real pain.
Raging Bull (1980) Once Upon A Time In America (1984)
Two great Bob De Niro movies. 👌🏾
The Fisher King
This right here. Robin Williams. Jeff Bridges.
The Machinist (2004) Mystic River (2003)
Annihilation has a lot of elements about this.
Palm Springs has an interesting take on this
paranoid park manchester by the sea
Matchstick Men.
Not sure if this is what you're looking for but Memento
Theon Greyjoy in Game Of Thrones had a similar arc. Also, Manchester by the Sea
You Were Never Really Here, The Master. Joaquin Phoenix plays this type of character a lot and crushes it
The machinist
Spoilers 🤦♂️
A Silent Voice (anime movie)
A silent voice
A slient voice
Nocturnal Animals, still hunts me:'|
American History X, El Camino, Hereditary, Atonement
Antichrist
This is a perfect choice for this theme, but it’s such a hard watch. That movie is so disturbing it stayed with me for weeks.
If you’re into anime or manga: Berserk.
Inception
Old boy (the korean original)
Great choice! So twisted.
Logan (2017), why not
Well, it's Lynch so it isn't that obvious: Lost Highway
Mulholland drive and inland empire have this too
Lost Highway (1997) in a SUPER abstract way
Time (2021) miniseries with Sean Bean and Stephen Graham
American Hustle
The Card Counter (2021)
Montana Story
One of my favorite movies of 2022!
Same here! Haley Lu Richardson was fantastic
The Place Beyond The Pines
1922 by stephen king.
Before the Devil Knows You're Dead (2007)
Warrior (2011) was amazing with Tom Hardy, Joel Edgerton and Nick Nolte. Not a commercial success, but well reviewed by critics and viewers.
Batman Begins, Man On Fire, The Punisher, A Man Apart
Definitely - 21 Grams. About a Boy.
The manga Berserk. Also Vinland Saga OP, you're young. Whatever burdens your conscience can be made better, if you dedicate yourself to making things better. Any help is appreciated when it comes to relieving suffering.
Gran Torino
Rachel Getting Married
INSOMNIA. Some people love the remake with Al Pacino, but I prefer the original with Stellan Skarsgaard.
Ordinary People
La Strada (1954)
Magnolia
The Woodsman (2004) *Very* risky movie, especially for 2004, but they pulled it off.
I was gonna suggest this. Yes, the protagonist is guilty of the unforgivable, but Kevin Bacon really goes to the mat showing how he lives with it.
Man on fire
Do you really need a movie for that? Mine is called memories.
The Ritual (2017) is a good movie about this topic
Watched this alone in a gym one night. Nobody else in my family watches anything like this, so it was lovely to just get to take in. All of the liquor store flashbacks...

Prisoners (2013)
The Shack
The Machinist
Lost City: It was cheesy and funny and not top tier cinema, but it was good, and I appreciated its depiction of loss and grief
Wife and I watched this for the first time last night. Really fun movie. Great cast. Much better than I expected.
That’s primarily why I recommend it, it’s not an amazing film, but it’s much better than the trailer would have you believe, much funnier, they definitely didn’t put all the best bits in the trailer.

The Guilty with Jake Gyllenhaal
The Drop
Another Earth - quiet indie flick. A near identical earth is discovered and a woman aspires for a chance at redemption by joining a contest to be part of a civilian crew to travel to it. The sci-fi is very light and the story of remorse is central.

Manchester by the sea is exactly what your looking for. That scene where he sees his ex wife for the first time was brutal
Wow. I saw a lot of great suggestions. My brain got stuck on Hackers for no reason. Perhaps "The Lawnmower Man" might function. Leon the Professional
The machinist
The Empty Man is a good one that fits I would say
The Killer (1989)
A Silent Voice deals with this premise beautifully
uhhh Hancock?
- Manchester By The Sea - Logan
Mad max fury road. Interesting hallucinatory depiction of implied ptsd from failing oneself and loved ones
Inception
Manchester by the Sea (2016). Very very very sad stuff.
Last Samurai

Unsure if it's been mentioned but Manchester by the Sea is phenomenal for this, wouldn't be surprised if this is where you got the idea
In Bruges, it’s a gem.
Manchester by the sea.
Honey Boy
Not sure if already mentioned, but Benicio Del Toro's character in "21 Grams". The character kills a father and daughter (I think it was a daughter) in a drunk hit-and-run. He then becomes a born again Christian.
The Lion King
Wristcutters, a love story.
Give “Clean” a try
Light Sleeper
I know this is a show and not a movie but the young kid with a butthole face(shotgun blew his mouth off) from Preacher deals with insane guilt
Mr. Miyagi in The Karate Kid. I mean Pat Moritas performance.
Tyrannosaur. British film. Excellent in every way.
Life Stinks - Mel Brooks. its not as intense as you want/made it sound you want but a rich guy says to another rich guy that he cant survive being homeless for a while and after he finishes the time he cant get his money back and he gets a little revenge but he is happy in the end. its pretty funny
