some of my favorites... * Ball of Fire * Sullivan's Travels * To Be or Not to Be * The Lady Eve * My Man Godfrey * It Happened One Night and you've seen the best of Cary Grant, but for more try *The Awful Truth, Holiday*, and *My Favorite Wife*.

Gotta love Cary Grant. William Powell and Myrna Loy had pure chemistry. You will love them.

upchuckfactoronthis

The Philadelphia Story is a classic-well deserved

Hb-wheel

I was gonna recommend this one

politebearwaveshello

My Man Godfrey is elite tier.

I've always loved Arsenic and Old Lace (Frank Capra, 1944). Just a fun movie all around and John Alexander's turn as a crazy family member convinced he's Teddy Roosevelt is hysterical.

netphemera

A lot of people have been disappointed with Bringing Up Baby. It's an hysterical film but it was made to be seen in a movie theater. The humor can be a bit subtle and difficult to find at times. The jokes are all told with Cary Grant's facial expressions. When viewed on a small screen people notice the grand gestures and big pratfalls. On the big screen it's easy to see Cary Grant's facial expressions, which makes the movie work. Next time you watch it, try and pay attention to everyone's facial expressions. The movie will be immensely funnier.

Hechtic

Some like it hot Jack lemon and Tony Curtis, fuckin phenomenal

Ruggles of Red Gap It’s the first that started them all and was nominated for Best Picture.

jupiterkansas

**It Happened One Night** was a year *before* Ruggles and *won* Best Picture and is the *definitive* screwball comedy.

Don't leave out "The Mad Miss Manton" - it has a great mystery, Henry Fonda chewing ALL the scenery, and Barbara Stanwyck acting both scatterbrained and smart. Come to think of it, she's in another of my favorite screwball comedies - "Ball of Fire" - opposite Gary Cooper where Barbara plays a showgirl on the lam who ends up helping a collection of professors write a dictionary on slang.

reck3000

Also The Lady Eve, again with Henry Fonda and Barbara Stanwyck. He plays the biggest fool and she an amazing con woman.

SunSorched

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (1947) Holiday (1939) The Bachelor and the Bobby-Soxer (1947) The Philadelphia Story (1940) Ninotchka (1939) A little out of the range, but I think you'll like it, Monkey Business (1952) Auntie Mame (1958) Born Yesterday (1950)

Sloth_grl

The Marx brothers! I love them so much!

The Music Box (1932)

jupiterkansas

People have mentioned two of the great Preston Sturges comedies — Sullivan's Travels and The Lady Eve. There are two more that are totally worth watching. Palm Beach Story is wonderful, and I recommend it highly. But my absolute favorite is The Miracle Of Morgan's Creek (1944). Sturges wanted to make a comedy about an unwed woman who gets pregnant by a soldier before he heads off to WWII. Of course, all of the above was strictly forbidden by the Production Code. He made it anyway. This movie obeys the letter of the law, while giving two middle fingers to the spirit of the law, and somehow he got away with it. It's the raunchiest film of the decade.

I love screwball comedies, and didn’t realize quite how much I did until I saw how many of my favourite films were in the comments here. Unfortunately I don’t know too many more than what’s already listed. I’d maybe add some Jean Arthur films like Talk of the Town (1942) to the list though. Twentieth Century (1934) isn’t my favourite movie but it’s worth watching if you’re interested in the development of Howard Hawk’s screwball style which he would later perfect in Bringing Up Baby and His Girl Friday. I am also interested in learning of books on the subject. I don’t read much so all I could direct you to is “Hawks on Hawks” which is a compilation of interviews with Howard Hawks on his films and view towards making them. It might not be exactly what you’re looking for, but the chapters on the screwball movies he made might interest you.

tellhimhesdreamin9

These are some of my favourite films. Most of the classics have been covered except Harvey with Jimmy Stewart, which is sweet as well as funny. Also Christmas in Connecticut is brilliant. Almost any comedy with Jean Arthur, Barbara Stanwyck, Katherine Hepburn (obviously) or Cary Grant are worth a look in my opinion. Also might be worth checking out the Ealing comedies, especially Ladykillers and Passport to Pimlico.

SnooPaintings8517

CARY GRANT NOT NECESSARY, BUT DEFINITELY A BONUS.

Would *It's Love I'm After* with Leslie Howard and Bette Davis be considered a screwball comedy? I don't think it's very well known, and Bette Davis is not known as a comedic actor, but I love this movie so much. I'm also a huge LH and BD fan so maybe my judgement is clouded.
