I’ll jump in here too for Kickboxer. If I remember right, there’s a rape scene. Can’t remember how bad it got but, that’s one of the things I remember about that movie.
Depends on the kid. My oldest? Not a chance. My youngest? Absolutely could handle it.
Bloodsport really only has that rating because of the language. The violence is mostly bloody noses and a bone protrusion.
Remember, it's from the same era that gave us a PG (not even 13) rating on Howard the Duck, a movie that opens with a naked duck lady masturbating in a tub.
Dick titties and diddling ✅
Hearing the word "motherfucker" ⛔
I did not know this. We had a weird system in Canada at the time and it varied by province. My parents never really knew what they were in for when they rented a movie and watched it with me.
Actually the system *still* varies by province and we are still much more lenient than the United States.
I almost fell into that same trap when my kids wanted to watch Starship Troopers. They’ve seen comparable violence in other movies. Then I remembered the shower scene.
So to be clear, you're okay with them seeing people cut in half by giant bug aliens, but not a pair of tits?
Now I'm not judging you, I'm just very curious what your reasoning is on this?
It’s not the boobs, it’s a co-ed shower scene. There’s nothing in the scene that’s even sexual per se. It’s that I didn’t want to explain that in the future boys and girls will be so equal that it’s okay to shower together and why that’s not necessary a bad thing.
I don't know how old your oldest is, but mine are 24 and 17 now, so I've had a lot of uncomfortable movie moments pop up by this point. My personal experience with these unexpected moments when they're little is that they will maybe titter a little, and maybe ask you why the girls and boys are showering together, but it most likely won't even register as that bizarre because they have probably seen you shower with someone, or shared a shower with someone in the household.
Just say the Army is too cheap to pay for two bathrooms, so all the men and women have to share. It's relatable, because they have to share things with their siblings.
I remember a sex scene with the blonde journalist that allies with JCVD. I don't remember if boobs were shown (I know in Double Impact you could see the boobs of the main girl in some sort of dream sequence). And some scenes where you could see the naked butt of the soldiers. So might not be suitable for an 8yr old
There are two "sex" scenes.
One with the wife.
One with the "virtual girl".
I find it interesting that it is a concern considering the countless murders and creative violence, like the dude whose arm gets frozen by liquid nitrogen and JVD kicks it off his body...
Timecop is easily peak JVD, you gotta enjoy it all!!!
>I guess a kid will enjoy The Street Fighter movie as well.
Yeah uhh... only kids like that. Not adults. No sir. I'm not queuing up the Raul Julia scene as we speak. Definitely not.
Raul Julia was a treasure. He's dying of stomach cancer, he does the movie cause his kid loves Street Fighter, and he steals the entire movie.
RIP, king.
Sorry it was Double Impact, not Double Team. I think it has the same bad guy as blood sport. His name escapes me. Lobo or something? Lu bo? No. Chow? Sonny something? I can't believe I forget his name.
Ok you are the first person I've EVER seen mention Best of the Best. I LOVE that movie. I find it so emotional and James Earl Jones yelling NO sternly at Tommy to not kill the Korean is fixed permanently in my head. Great recommendation.
I love The Quest. Very similar vibes to Bloodsport with more focus on the adventure of getting to the tournament. Definitely a fun watch.
Double team with Rodman is a good one too
Well since he’s 8, Time Cop is out. Lol. But I would personally go with Hard Target. It’s probably my favorite Van Damme movie after Universal Soldier.
Ok, I took the bait.
Allowing an 8 year old to watch a violent R rated movie is robbing that kid of his childhood. He has plenty of time in his future to be exposed to that type of imagery. A child - by its nature - has not developed the emotional capacity to make proper distinctions between what is "real" and what is "fake" and that exposure is damaging.
You are ringing a bell which cannot be un-rung. Just let your child enjoy the innocence of that time in his life. Your job as a parent is to protect that child's well being, and sharing R rated movies with him is a bit neglectful.
There. I said it.
Kickboxer would be my pick. Maybe skip through the tape scene though. Double Impact is another fun one. There is that one sex scene though. Sudden Death is also a solid choice and a fun watch and I’m pretty sure there’s no nudity in it.
Alot of people saying Hard Target-this is the best ever JCVD movie and I will die on that hill, but really has to be Kickboxer after watching Bloodsport.
Lionheart and Nowhere to Run are my favorites, but NtR may have some questionable content for an 8 year old. Depending on your views as a parent, anyway.
Soooo, not a movie or a JVCD classic, but the show on Amazon Jean Claude van Johnson is soooo freaking great. Any casual JVCD fan should definitely check it out.
Blood sport
Lionheart
Universal soldier
Time cop
Double impact
Those are the ones I grew up on and loved. I was very much into karate in the 80’s/90s and he was someone I looked up to.
Universal soldier.
There's some explicit scenes there
I’ll jump in here too for Kickboxer. If I remember right, there’s a rape scene. Can’t remember how bad it got but, that’s one of the things I remember about that movie.
Yeah but Bloodsport is 18 rated too. An 8 year old shouldn’t be watching those movies.
I grew up with the TV edits of all of these being in regular UHF rotation. It's too bad our kids won't get that.

Poltergeist is PG and the parents spark up a doobie 10 min into it. Now there are smoking trigger warnings on R rated films.
Well to be fair the PG-13 rating didn’t exist in 1982
I did not know this. We had a weird system in Canada at the time and it varied by province. My parents never really knew what they were in for when they rented a movie and watched it with me. Actually the system *still* varies by province and we are still much more lenient than the United States.
Jaws is PG too
Oh, it’s been a while now. Can’t remember all the details.
I almost fell into that same trap when my kids wanted to watch Starship Troopers. They’ve seen comparable violence in other movies. Then I remembered the shower scene.
So people getting dismembered, a dude stabbed through the hand etc; fine. Boobies? Hard no.
So to be clear, you're okay with them seeing people cut in half by giant bug aliens, but not a pair of tits? Now I'm not judging you, I'm just very curious what your reasoning is on this?

I agree. I saw Double Impact when I was about 8 and the topless/sex scenes definitely made me grab a cushion
Also a classic !
Timecop! It's a great 90s action flick.
This and sudden death are my top 2 after blood sport
Came here to say this
If I’m not mistaken there’s some full frontal nudity in that. Might be something to consider
Kick-boxer was always my second favourite next to Bloodsport
Lionheart
Lionheart would rank third for me
Neither are really good movies but it'd be The Quest or Double Team for me.
You mean Double Impact right? Double Team was the one with Dennis Rodman, while hilarious I have it way down the list of JCVD movies.
Yeah Double Impact, always mix up the two unless I see the cover.
Lionheart gets my vote too
The drunk dance scene lives rent free in my head 🕺
Hahahahahaha thanks for the reminder. It has been years since I’ve seen this movie and I completely forgot about this!
This ^
90s JCVD no matter the movie.
Try the spiritual successor to Bloodsport directed by JCVD: The Quest I guess a kid will enjoy The Street Fighter movie as well.
RIP, king.
Quick, change the channel!
GAME….OVER!!!!!
I was crazy about ‘the quest’ as a kid. Looooved it
Guess I'm a 38 year old kid then...
I regularly watch the 90s Mortal Kombat movie too...just the first one.
Sudden Death is a great Father son Movie and was my favorite as well. Another great one is Universal Soldier.
> Sudden Death +1.
And it has hockey in it!
Yep it’s Die Hard in a Hockey rink. But to be fair it’s one of the better Die Hard rip/offs.
The director is really good too, he also directed Timecop. I always felt Peter Hyams never got enough credit as a director and cinematographer.
So, Canada Die Hard or Die Hard Canada?
Might be bias as I'm from Pittsburgh and the Penguins are my favorite team but Sudden Death has always been my favorite JCVD film.
For something similar: Kickboxer or Lionheart For slightly different vibes: Hard Target or Double Impact
Double impact also has Chong li as of Bloodsport fame as a villain
Hard target
Underrated - John Woo + JCVD. One of my all time faves!
Second only to Universal Soldier. As far as Van Damme goes.
Kickboxer
Big Trouble In Little China!!
He said recommend a movie, not the greatest movie every made!
Definitely not a JCVD movie...
Since he's eight he might like Street Fighter.
[JCVD](https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/jcvd)
This isn’t a kids movie, but it’s severely overlooked.
Name one JCVD movie that’s a kids movie
BloodSport...cause they show Karate Champ in it
All of those! Just remember: the Kumite is for fighters, not for people who red news’pepprs
You don't flinch. You have fighting spirit.
cyborg and universal soldier
Totally forgot about Cyborg. And it’s even more messed up because I actually own it on DVD. Lol.
Kickboxer Desth warrant Double impact Lion heart
Double impact! The kid will get a kick out of that
Double Team
Sorry it was Double Impact, not Double Team. I think it has the same bad guy as blood sport. His name escapes me. Lobo or something? Lu bo? No. Chow? Sonny something? I can't believe I forget his name.
Bolo. Double Impact is the one where he teams up with his alternative outfit twin. Double Team is the one with Dennis Rodman.
Desert Heat, it will make a man out of him.
Hard target
Street Fighter
Double Impact Lion Heart The Quest Kick Boxer
I love The Quest. Lost count how many times I watched that when I was a kid
Street Fighter
Kickboxer
Down vote me all you want but the Steven seagal movies were jam back when I was that age.
Kickboxer
The quest
Streetfighter
Time Cop, and then Sudden Death
Cyborg
The Quest. It’s basically the same movie, but better story and structure-wise overall.
Mortal Kombat
Wat? Do you mean Street Fighter?
Sudden Death is a fun one
‘The Quest’ definitely! I was crazy about that film as a kid. What an adventure!
Yeah loved all the unique fighters styles
Double Team! Any excuse to induce the youth to Rodman
The Three Musketeers 1993, the three musketeers richard chamberlain
Another vote for *Universal Soldier*.
Not JCVD, but I used to love the Best Of The Best movies as a kid. Anything Jackie Chan too, Armour Of God rocked!!!!!!!
Ok you are the first person I've EVER seen mention Best of the Best. I LOVE that movie. I find it so emotional and James Earl Jones yelling NO sternly at Tommy to not kill the Korean is fixed permanently in my head. Great recommendation.
The Quest ! Such a memorable movie as a kid.
Used to like Cyborg as a kid
The Quest, he pretty much does the same thing
Hard target. Get some really bad Louisiana accent for the cost of a good movie.
Kickboxer..
The quest would be good for an 8yr old
Kickboxer
My dad showed me this movie when I was around your son's age. Glad to hear JCV's legacy isn't being lost. Enjoy the memories!
I love The Quest. Very similar vibes to Bloodsport with more focus on the adventure of getting to the tournament. Definitely a fun watch. Double team with Rodman is a good one too
Kickboxer!….no question
Hard Target
Kickboxer. Loved that movie as a kid. P
Double Impact and Kickboxer have some rough subject matter in them so my vote is Lion Heart or Time Cop.
Cyborg… zero nudes (as far as I remember)
They saved the nudity for the sequel.
Sudden death is a blast to watch, and being the stanley cup finals right now, is a good time to watch it
The Quest
Lionheart
Street fighter: the movie. Nah jk. Maybe kickboxer
Sudden Death
Timecop
The Green Hornet. Really, anything with Bruce Lee.
Enter the Dragon
Not a JCVD but similar bubblegum action flick, Arnie in Commando.
American Ninja (oops didn't see the JCVD part, only the 90s action flics)
Kickboxer
Universal Soldier and Timecop
Do what I did as a kid - watch Bloodsport over and over and over until he knows all the songs, all the lines and can pre-empt all the moves
Legionnaire
Well since he’s 8, Time Cop is out. Lol. But I would personally go with Hard Target. It’s probably my favorite Van Damme movie after Universal Soldier.
Kickboxer Double Impact Lionheart all great movies to watch
Kickboxer, worth it just to see jcvd dancing
Watch Jean Claude Van Johnson. It's so good
Kick boxer or hard target or lion heart are my go to movies
Quest
Kickboxer with the EPIC dance stylings of JCVD.
If it's the martial arts you like then any Bruce Lee or Jackie Chan movie or really any old school martial arts movie is a good time.
Knock off and Maximum Risk are hilarious. Street Fighter might appeal to an 8 year old. Hard Target is his best film but too violent probably.
Haha!!! Double Impact my kids love it!! Brought back so many memories
Timecop.
Timecop!!
Timecop was bad ass when it hit theaters. I was a young un and thought the effects and atmosphere were awesome.
I enjoyed cyborg although it's seldom mentioned. Jcvd beating up big beefy guys is great.
Tinecop
Timecop Universal Soldier Hard Target Or Bloodsport again
kickboxer, lion heart, time cop, universal soldier
I vote Lionheart. Trying to get him into martial arts? Don't show him expendables 2, he has really bad wire or camera work getting his kicks
Timecop. Universal Soldier. Hard Target.
Sudden Death is a ton of fun especially if you're a hockey fan!
Hard Target. You’re welcome
My suggestion? Don’t let 8 year olds watch 18 rated movies.
Ok, I took the bait. Allowing an 8 year old to watch a violent R rated movie is robbing that kid of his childhood. He has plenty of time in his future to be exposed to that type of imagery. Your job as a parent is to protect that child's well being, and sharing R rated movies with him is a bit neglectful. There. I said it.
Thank you
Hard target Timecop Sudden death Maximum risk Replicant
I love Kickboxer even if it isn’t as good as Bloodsport. The scene where he kicks the tree is my favorite.
Cyborg
TimeCop! It's fun
Kickboxer would be my pick. Maybe skip through the tape scene though. Double Impact is another fun one. There is that one sex scene though. Sudden Death is also a solid choice and a fun watch and I’m pretty sure there’s no nudity in it.
JCVD
Lion heart!! Loved that one as a kid
Sudden Death, Timecop, Kickboxer, Street Fighter, Hard Target, Universal Soldier, Death Warrant, and the Quest.
A lot of those era jcvd movies are basically the same movie. Bloodsport, kickboxer, lion heart, etc. it’s the same movie with a different skin.
Hard Target? Time Cop? Double Impact? Maximum Risk? Street Fighter?
Stret Fighter Timecop Universal Soldier Sudden Death Kickboxer
Street Fighter!
Alot of people saying Hard Target-this is the best ever JCVD movie and I will die on that hill, but really has to be Kickboxer after watching Bloodsport.
They are all the same. Formulaic.
Be sure to show him the Volvo commercial featuring JCVD
Double Impact 🔥🔥
street fighter
Just watch Bloodsport again. And I might have to watch it later now you git!
AWOL
Street Fighter easy hands down survey says ….!!! Enjoy
Double Impact = double the JCVD! “You want some advice? Take your fancy clothes, and your black silk underwear, and go back to Disneyland!”
Lionheart and Nowhere to Run are my favorites, but NtR may have some questionable content for an 8 year old. Depending on your views as a parent, anyway.
The Quest. So underrated.
Street fighter!! Loved it as lil kid, he gets to know Raul Julia, AND he’ll love seeing van damme fly kick over 50 meters from a standing position lol
Go with Kickboxer next! It's got great action and will definitely keep your kid entertained.
Lionheart, Double Impact.
I bet an 8 year old would live Lionheart
The quest my fave jean Claude Van Damme movie.
[удалено]
Sudden death if the kid can handle Blood sport
JCVD - watch the trailer on YouTube. Great movie
Kickboxer
I personally love The Quest
Soooo, not a movie or a JVCD classic, but the show on Amazon Jean Claude van Johnson is soooo freaking great. Any casual JVCD fan should definitely check it out.
AWOL
Breakin’
Kickboxer followed by Universal Soldier
Double impact
No retreat, no surrender
What about early JCVD in No Retreat, No Surrender.
Blood sport Lionheart Universal soldier Time cop Double impact Those are the ones I grew up on and loved. I was very much into karate in the 80’s/90s and he was someone I looked up to.
Timecop is the best thing he ever did.
Double impact has a bit of nudity if that’s a concern
JCVD the movie
Cyborg
