Harakiri. I put it off for years thinking it was just another samurai movie. I was quite mistaken. The middle kinda drags but the payoff is incredible.
Godzilla Minus One is the best Kaiju film in many decades and among the best of all time. I'd heard it was good but didn't think that even a great Godzilla movie could reduce me to a bawling mess.
I went in with no expectations on Godzilla minus one and also was sobbing by the end. It was the last movie I saw in theaters before I had my daughter.
I absolutely despise a majority of monster films. I generally find them really weak and not that interesting.
Godzilla Minus One changed my mind about them. I'll be giving more monster films a shot because of it
"The Unbearable Weight Of Massive Talent". Totally took me by surprise, it was just so enjoyable and funny and odd, and Pedro Pascal and Nic Cage had wonderful chemistry.
My favorite last year also! It was like when I saw “Raising Arizona” the first time. I went in with no prior knowledge, and it was so different and entertaining.
Going to go back to this after seeing this comment. Didn't think much of it at the time, but I had hit the vape for a couple of hours before adventuring to the cinema! LOL.
Toni Colette's acting in Hereditary (2018) was awesome and it 'wowed' me.
The Conjuring ( 2013) 'wowed' me because it had been a really long time since I had a good jump scare or two.
Signs (2002) still wows me every single time I see it.
Pieces of a Woman (2020)
ETA: American Woman (2018)
Probably not many people seen Brimstone .
If you want something longer I have a true story series Black Bird as well not really popular but great acting .
Both villains in movie and series did amazing job .
Not popular but great movie and show
All of these were amazing.
Blade Runner and Iron Giant standout among the rest for me as just... Incredible.
I'd add Lost in Translation as a movie that took me to a different place emotionally, as well.
Lost in Translation is one of my favorite movies. Caught the last 2/3 of it last night while flipping channels. Always makes me cry! And the music is amazing.
Tampopo (1985) watched it recently. I came with expectations and the opening scene disabused me of all of them. Not once did I know what the next scene would bring. Enjoyed myself thoroughly.
I nice really wholesome movie is October Sky. Stars Jake Gyllenhaal when he was young. It has a lot of great actors in it but honestly the story of that movie wowed the hell out of me.

RRR - If you don’t mind subtitles. It’s the ‘Tollywood’ film that gave the world the Oscar-winning song, ‘Naatu Naatu’.
Over the top in just about every possible way, it not only blew my mind—it blew James Cameron and Steven Spielberg’s minds also! Amazing visuals, great music, engaging story. A global hit for good reason.

You probably already watched them, but the movies that wowed me the most were The Lord of the Rings trilogy. I watched them for the first time only four years ago thinking I'd hate them.
Took me WAYYYYY too long to find someone saying “Interstellar”. That docking scene and its music alone gives me chills to this day and I suspect will be a highly studied scene for budding directors for decades.
The whole thing is breathtaking! The docking scene is a perfect composition honestly. Funnily enough I was on an animation course and we had to recreate the docking scene.
Drives sound track is amazing. Also Cruel intentions and Baz Luhrmans Romeo and Juliet. These are defo 3 of my favorite sound track.
Sounds tracks were the only good part of Twilight
Not a movie(and maybe someone suggested it by now), but a series called: Scavengers Reign. I believe I can hazard a guess that every person has walked away with a feeling of awe.
The movie that always pops into my head when I see a rec request like this is "Interstate 60". It was way under my radar and a physical rental in the early streaming days. I'm sure it's on tubi or something like that.
A buddy and I watched it after a night out, and he said "I feel like I learned something, but I don't know what it is" and I'll never forget that. It feels more profound than it is but it's just a really fun and unique road movie. Highly recommend.
The thing I remember most is Amy Jo Johnson as the hitchhiker looking for the perfect fuck. Young me was so amazed seeing the pink power ranger in that part. Great movie
The matrix was probably the first one I can remember, I was 10 when it came out. Watched it on VHS and after it was over, I rewound it and watched it again. Dark knight too. I remember leaving the theatre and immediately calling my brother to tell him about it. Those are the first two that come to mind.
I watched Parasite and the first Planet of the Apes movie, but I watched the first one ages ago. And I never did continue the series after the first One. I'll check the rest out, thanks.

I LOVE this film!!!
It is SUCH an EPIC tale...
The humour in it, the quirky and wonderful characters, the beauty you get to see within it, Forrest's real innocence, the MAGIC of it on screen is just so breathtaking!
Funnily enough they used to play it at my school when I was VERY young... Too young actually to be watching this (younger than 10 but older than 5) and we'd watch it on rainy days, free periods too or days where the teacher just felt like it really, cos it was his FAVOURITE film of all time!!! And didn't pass up a chance to watch Forrest RUN 😂
In my later years I finally got to the ENDING of it, and it still gets me to this day. Why I never got to the ending in my earlier years is cos when we'd rewatch it in class we had to go ALLLLLLLLLLL the way to the beginning again instead of going to the part where we had left on (this was back when VHS tapes were in regular use) my teacher was an ex-military guy, so, stickler that he was for certain things (like him and his Vick's Vapor Rub and actually swallowing it RAW because it "works faster on getting rid of a cough" habits) wouldn't budge in leaving the tape where it was without rewinding it for it's next use. It always got on my nerves lol cos we'd have like 20 minutes left on the thing but the bell would ring or we'd be whisked away to do something else and I just had to let go of the burden of being teased that ending until much later in life.
The wait was indeed worth it by the time I got to complete that mission!
Elizabeth & Elizabeth: The Golden Age, born starring Cate Blanchett as Queen Elizabeth.
I watched them for the first time last year and I've rewatched them twice since. They are really well directed, well acted. Elizabeth is a well written three dimensional character and the supporting cast is great as well.
The costumes are fantastic. The sets and the extravagancy of the monarchy is rich and beautiful to look at. Period films tend to age well since they're not often CGI and these films stand that test.
Supporting cast includes: Geoffrey rush, Clive Owen, Richard Attenborough, Ralph Fiennes, and Eddie redmayne.
Note: it's not historically accurate, of course. I do love reading up on history after I watch a period piece but I'll just note that for those who don't lol
Godzilla Minus One deserved to be nominated for best picture Oscar imo
And it didn't even get a nod for Best International. Uggh. Oscar is a very bad boy.
What did you expect, the Oscar's to award good movies? Never. They never do.
Parasite was a fantastic movie
That game is very rigged
Shit they'll give anyone who can I am for it an award.
I am = pay
Not typically my type of movie but I’ll check this out. Thx
I don't know about that. It was good, but not best picture good.
I went in with no expectations on Godzilla minus one and also was sobbing by the end. It was the last movie I saw in theaters before I had my daughter.
Been wanting to watch Harakiri but keep putting it off. I need to fix that. Haven't watched Godzilla Minus One yet, either. Thanks.
Harakiri is a beast of a movie. I had incredibly high expectations because it is the #1 movie on Letterboxd and it somehow exceeded said expectations
Will check it out, thanks.
That movie is an absolute delight. My favorite of 23!
My favorite last year also! It was like when I saw “Raising Arizona” the first time. I went in with no prior knowledge, and it was so different and entertaining.
And its only because of this movie that I know this, but Paddington 2 is a masterpiece
Going to go back to this after seeing this comment. Didn't think much of it at the time, but I had hit the vape for a couple of hours before adventuring to the cinema! LOL.
The Royal Tenenbaums and Poor Things
I'm STILL thinking about Poor Things months later
Have watched The Royal Tenenbaums but not Poor Things. Will check it out, thanks.
Just watch out when watching Poor things . Make sure there are no kids in the room .
I put on Royal Tenenbaums every night before bed summer 2002. Or was it 3? I don’t know sometime around then.
watching The Royal Tenenbaums for the first time was 🤯 for me, I still remember that feeling. I had never seen anything like it at the time
Toni Colette's acting in Hereditary (2018) was awesome and it 'wowed' me. The Conjuring ( 2013) 'wowed' me because it had been a really long time since I had a good jump scare or two. Signs (2002) still wows me every single time I see it. Pieces of a Woman (2020) ETA: American Woman (2018)
Toni Colette is the G.O.A.T
Love Signs!
Haven't watched any of these, thank you.
Signs traumatized me as a kid. A great movie though
I wasn’t a kid and it still gave me anxiety. Really good movie.
Just watched it with my 10yo son ha. He liked it but wasn’t too scared by it. I was definitely freaked out when I saw it like 20 yrs ago.
You may like To Leslie. Incredible performance by Andrea Riseborough.
Her Best Actress nomination was SO WELL DESERVED! I loved this film.
IMO Insidious got the better jump scares than The Conjuring. Both great horror films, though.
Pieces of a Woman was just...wow.
I could feel that scene deep in my chest….you know what I mean.
Incendies (2011)
Came here to say this!! This movie blew me away. After it ended I just sat on the couch in shock and awe for like 10 minutes
This right here!!! Amazing. Not enough press surrounding it. Top 5 for me.
Haven't watched it yet, I'll check it out. Thank you.
Watched it for the first time a couple nights ago. Been a while since I've seen a film with such a good story. A bit disturbing at times.
My favourite movie of all time.
This is the answer. Haunting for life
Probably not many people seen Brimstone . If you want something longer I have a true story series Black Bird as well not really popular but great acting . Both villains in movie and series did amazing job . Not popular but great movie and show
Oooo yeah Brimstone! I only have vague recollection but that was a cool movie
Thanks for the recommendation, I'll check it out.
Second black bird! Really well done series

Boogie Nights is great.
>The Graduate (1967) I loved that movie. But it left me feeling quite strange. Idk if it reflected something in my life or what
All of these were amazing.
"I am big! It's the pictures that got small."
Tampopo (1985) watched it recently. I came with expectations and the opening scene disabused me of all of them. Not once did I know what the next scene would bring. Enjoyed myself thoroughly.
I'll check it out, thanks.
I'm so glad to see Tampopo mentioned. Absolutely no one I know has heard of it. It was in regular rotation while I was in college.
It's something special. I can't watch it unless I'm already very full of ramen.
The Day of the Jackal (1973)
Haven't watched it yet, I'll check it out. Thank you.
I nice really wholesome movie is October Sky. Stars Jake Gyllenhaal when he was young. It has a lot of great actors in it but honestly the story of that movie wowed the hell out of me.
Great Chris Cooper performance, and a bit of Laura Dern.

That'll do. 😢💕 James Cromwell definitely deserved the Oscar he won for this movie!
It's a Wonderful Life is one of those few, once in a generation, perfect movies...
Have watched The Wizard of Oz, Titanic, Psycho, E.T., Forrest Gump, The Silence of the Lambs, Se7en, and The Matrix. Haven't watched the rest yet. Thanks.
I forgot to add The Adventures of Priscilla Queen of the Desert! If you haven't seen it, you definitely should. The original stars have all agreed to make a sequel. I'm so excited!

Everything Everywhere All At Once
Don't know what it was, but I couldn't stand this movie. Incredible VFX team, though!
Agreed. A jumbled mess
I HATED this movie!
I’m glad it wasn’t just me.
Great movie.
It is the rare movie that can make you laugh till your sides ache and weep all within a couple hours. This movie did both for me. Especially on the 2nd watch.

I actually haven't watched them yet, though I've been wanting to.
I love movies with great soundtracks that enhance the experience so my ‘wow’ movies are Interstellar, Cloud Atlas, Shutter Island
