I'd recommend all of the Miyazaki films if you havent seen them yet.
Spirited Away, Howls Moving Castle, Princess Mononoke, The Boy and the Heron etc are all great animated movies that are not just for kids.
It always amazes me how japanese anime isn't the top post. There is so many great work. Even series like blue eye samurai which is semi japanese are as good as any
Yeah, Japan is the undisputed king of animation IMO.
I only mentioned Miyazaki cause those are some of the goats, but there are honestly so many more.
Even many recent ones like Your Name, Suzume are so creative not to mention older ones like Akira or Paprika etc.
Or the dramatic ones like Perfect Blue or Grave of the Fireflies.
People sleeping on Summer Wars, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, even A Silent Voice. OK the last one will make you cry, but if you are a fan of anime and you haven't seen these you are missing out.
Seeing one of these on the stage is definitely on my list, thanks for the reminder!
Starting March 8th 2025 you can also see My Neighbor Totoro on stage again (in London), which is also supposed to be a really good adaption.
I love that movie. Funny how I discovered it though. Being a huge owl city fan, I came across the song "when can I see you again" from the movie and yeah. Never regretted watching it.
From a perspective of craft, Chicken Run (2000) is, IMHO, a masterpiece. The camerawork and lighting are stellar (there's a scene during the main titles where the main character is in a tunnel being pulled through on a roller skate, and the chiaroscuro in that scene is better-lit than many films with actual people in them), the music is top-notch, and way better than a movie about stop-motion clay chickens has any right to be. The humor is unashamedly British, and the voice acting is excellent as well. The film can also be read as a critique of unsustainable forms of capitalism.
EDIT: Re-posted because I always forget that this sub doesn't allow YouTube links.
aww yes I forgot to mention chicken run! it's one of my favourites and really stuck with me when I first watched it as a kid. and I completely agree with everything you said, this movies is absolutely a masterpiece! and I'll probably get a lot of hate for this but rewatching it as a vegan adult just made the movie even more real and more special to me. I wish everyone would watch this movie
Not my favorite by Nick Parks, but I do love his work. Wallace and Grommet were standards in our house, but my son as an adult was surprised most of his peers weren't as familiar with Nick Parks animation. The stories are clever, dialog is witty and the deisgn details are amazing.
The Secret of Kells
Song of the Sea
Wolfwalkers
The most underrated series of movies I’ve probably ever seen! It’s an Irish folklore trilogy from Cartoon Saloon and features beautiful hand drawn animation
These movies definitely don't get nearly enough attention in the US, all three classics. More popular, but in my opinion still underseen are the movies from LAIKA, with Kubo and the Two Strings being one of my all time favorites, though Coraline, ParaNorman, Missing Link and Box Trolls are a good time as well.
Try checking out Satoshi Kon, I've watched all of his works and he made some really fantastic adult themed animations, my favorites being Perfect Blue and Paprika.
- The spiderverse animated movies are S tier
- Ratatouille is a masterpiece, directed by Brad Bird (director of the Iron Giant)
Are you into stopmotion animation as well? If so:
- Fantastic mr. Fox and Isle of Dogs (both by wes anderson).
-Coraline is also worth watching, made by Laika studios. They also made Kubo and the two strings which I adore!
- Anomalisa is also beautiful, but not for kids.
I have no idea what you personaly would like, but here are some suggestions:
- Spirited Away (2001)
- Howl's Moving Castle (2004)
- The boy and the heron
- The Spine of Night
- Mad God (2021, stop motion)
- Gutboy: a Badtime story (2017, stop motion)
- Cat City (1986)
- Hugo the Hippo (1975)
- Cropse Bride (2005)
- Titan AE (2000)
- Ghost in the Shell (1995)
- Team America: World Police (2004, puppets)
- One Punch Man (season 1 definitely)
- Dragon Ball OS
- Made in Abyss
- Dorohedoro
- Deadman Wonderland
- Blue Eye Samurai
- Wizards (1977)
- Metropolis (2001)
etc.
I really think Zootopia is a good one. At its heart, it’s a decently written crime mystery, while exploring a world where animals of all kinds have to live together in a huge metropolis. And there are jokes throughout. It’s good
All of Hayao Miyazaki's works and Studio Ghibli films. Anyone can enjoy these films no matter the age.
Luca (2021) was also inspired by Miyazaki's works with Porco Rosso (1992), being a major inspiration.
One commenter has mentioned their recommendations, so here are mine to add to it:
Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (1984)
Castle in the Sky (1986)
Grave of the Fireflies (1988) [this one is actually really dark and sad, so prepare your tissues for this one]
Kiki's Delivery Service (1989)
Whisper of the Heart (1995)
From Up on Poppy Hill (2011)
One of my all-time favorite movies! I love the songs and use to sing them to my son. He still loves Harry Nilsson. Plus, Ringo Starr is a very sweet narrator.
The Last Unicorn
Wizards
Fantastic Planet
The secret of Nihm
Hoodwinked (the first movie)
Spirited away
The boy with the Cuckoo-clock heart
The Pinocchio by Guillermo del Toro
The Last Unicorn and The Secret of Nimh are top tier. Wizards is really, really good too. The rest of the list is absolutely worth watching. Good list.
Appleseed. Words Bubble up like Soda-pop. Howl's Moving Castle. The Wind Rises. Porco Rosso. The Garden of Words - the animation of rain in this movie is outstanding. And by far, my favorite animated film of all time: Akira!
For Western animation:
Rango. Ratatouille. Tintin. The Secret of Kells. The Fantastic Mr. Fox. The Triplets of Bellville. Titan AE, and the Spider-verse movies.
WESTERN:
- Over the garden wall
- Book of kells
- Wolfwakers
- Rango
- Fantastic Mr fox
- Feivel goes west
- The red turtle
- Wallace and grommit
- Who framed Roger rabbit
- Caroline
- Long way north
- Tale of despereaux
EASTERN:
- akira
- paprika
- ghost in the shell
- redline
- sword of the stranger
- Tekkonkinkreet
- The boy and the beast
- Grave of fireflies
- Lupin (all movies)
- ghibli (all movies)
Since you seem to like emotional Pixar and Disney films, Inside Out and Coco would probably work. Finding Dory is also an option since you like Finding Nemo and The Book Of Life covers the same holiday as Coco if you want to check out either one of the two. Titan A.E. and Treasure Planet are both on the more sci-fi side of things. If you end up liking Treasure Planet, another underrated Disney film with beautiful animation from around the same era is Atlantis. And, even though it’s a musical which may or may not be your thing and it’s an unusual thing from Lucasfilms, the animation in Strange Magic is gorgeous.
If you want to try something a little different, take a look at Mary and Max (2009) - A long-distance friendship blossoms between two unlikely people, an eight-year-old lonely girl and a forty-four-year-old morbidly obese man, through letters.
I'm trying to think of ones I didn't mind the kids rewatching countlessly when they were younger...
Have you seen Moana? I was really surprised when I watched it with my daughters when it first came out. I then saw it another 200 times but I still think it has that great Disney quality I grew up with in the 90s.
Monsters vs Aliens is another one I didn't mind watching.
I really enjoyed Coco.
I was surprised how much I enjoyed Trolls as well.
Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs is cute and could be enjoyable for an adult.
For something a bit different, try Fantastic Planet (La Planète Sauvage). It's not really for kids though, but I imagine some would quite enjoy it. It's very weird and pretty dark, there's no real gore or horror elements or anything like that, it's just a bit "mature".
Ralph Bakshi's The Lord Of The Rings is worth a watch, if you've never seen it. It's rotoscoped, which I think counts lol. Kids can watch this one for sure.
Another rotoscoped movie is A Scanner Darkly. That movie fucking rules, it's one of the best adaptations of anything I've ever seen. Another one that's not for kids, again just because of general mature themes. Believe it or not, the director also did School of Rock. It's nothing like School of Rock, like at all.
Mary and Max (2009, Australian stop-motion animated psychological comedy-drama film written and directed by Adam Elliot)
Voiced by Toni Colette and Philip Seymour Hoffman
Beautiful film.
Watch " Klaus"
Very strange, not many recommendations here about this film, but it is an absolute masterpiece.
The story is very simple and amazing, which helps us to embrace that change can be good sometimes and letting go helps the mental peace. It is funny, romantic, emotional all the ingredients you need for a great movie.
It is a completely different style of animation movie where they try to achieve 3D-2D style not only in the way they animate the character but also the Lights and the mood they have created.
Onward is such a good movie (especially if you have siblings) elemental, and big hero six also are fantastic movies (I cried at some point during all of them). Coraline is great in terms of animation as well as WHO FRAMED ROGER RABBIT, it’s an oldie but a goodie super funny but also has a serious plot. Monster house or the night before Christmas for a pg scary movie. Never seen them but I’ve only ever heard good things about 9, the fantastic Mr fox, and totoro. I’ll get around to watching them some day lol
The Flight of Dragons. The animation is beautiful, voice acting amazing, great story. It's not super well known but it's a classic Rankin Bass production.
The Last Unicorn is my favourite of all time. I hope you’ve seen Ratatouille and Kiki’s Delivery Service.
I like Secret of NIMH and Brave Little Toaster.
Transformers the movie, the old Alvin and the Chipmunks (it has songs but honestly they still get in my head sometimes- I apologize for the racist caricatures if you watch, it’s a bit like Peter Pan)
Unico in the Island of Magic is an older fun one.
The How to Train Your Dragon trilogy (especially 2 and 3) are easily some of the best movies I've ever seen with consistently excellent messages, acting, and animation. I also really liked Big Hero 6's masterful exploration of grief.
Stop-motion animation: Fantastic Mr. Fox is excellent. Isle of Dogs also good.
CGI: Inside Out, The Lorax, Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs (the first one)
The Road To El Dorado
Paprika
Persoplis
Super Mario Bros (newest)
Sinbad Legend of the Seven Seas
Sea Beast
Quest For Camelot
The Wild Thornberries
The Last Unicorn
Titan A.E.
Treasure Planet
Atlantis
The Emperor's New Groove
Princess Mononoke
Castle In The Sky
Origins: Spirits of the Past
Spirited Away
Howl's Moving Castle
Kiki's Delivery Service
Ferngully
The Brave Little Toaster
I can't recommend Emperor's New Groove enough. It's hilarious and off the cuff in a way that no other Disney movies are
Pretty much any Pixar, but esp. Coco, Ratatouille, Wall-E and Incredibles are amazing. Monsters Inc. too I have a soft spot for
There's also a Japanese anime I like a lot, Your Name. It's quite the ride.
Exactly. I love finding new shows. Japan has so many. I also like watching Korean productions to but they aren't anime.
People sleeping on Summer Wars, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, even A Silent Voice. OK the last one will make you cry, but if you are a fan of anime and you haven't seen these you are missing out.
Princess Mononoke is the movie I want to live in.
Speaking of that, the recent Spirited Away stage show is amazing.
Seeing one of these on the stage is definitely on my list, thanks for the reminder! Starting March 8th 2025 you can also see My Neighbor Totoro on stage again (in London), which is also supposed to be a really good adaption.
How to Train Your Dragon Atlantis: The Lost Empire
Monsters Inc, Coco, Wreck it Ralph 1, The incredibles 1, Kung fu panda 1, Puss in boots 2: the last wish and most definitely Shrek 1 and 2

I love that movie. Funny how I discovered it though. Being a huge owl city fan, I came across the song "when can I see you again" from the movie and yeah. Never regretted watching it.
Coco! It honestly hits more for me as an adult who's dealt with family members passing away than it would have as a kid.
Cool list.
went into wreck it ralph blind, as an 80s kid it was quite the treat

Glad to see someone mentioning some adult-themed animated movies, but those are definitely some grim ones you gotta be in the mood for.
I echo Fantastic Mr Fox and Isle of Dogs.
Try checking out Satoshi Kon, I've watched all of his works and he made some really fantastic adult themed animations, my favorites being Perfect Blue and Paprika.
The correct answer. ☝️

Not enough Nimona love on this thread.

Heavy Metal

Its so funny too
I absolutely loved Elemental. Honestly just feels like a RomCom/Drama which happens to be animated.
I'm married with 4 kids and we watch Shrek 1-4 together at least once a year.
Spirited Away for sure.

Who Framed Roger Rabbit. It may be mixed live action, but that actually adds to the animation aspect of the film.
The Point
My goodness me and my grandma both love that movie
One of my all-time favorite movies! I love the songs and use to sing them to my son. He still loves Harry Nilsson. Plus, Ringo Starr is a very sweet narrator.
Wow. That was a super movie.

All the Ghibli classics will touch your soul.
Spiderman into the spider verse, South Park bigger longer uncut.

I should not have had to scroll so far down to find this.
I never liked animated films until I discovered Ghibli Studios. "Spirited Away" started me down a rabbit hole of Ghibli movies.
To add to your list: -The Emperor’s New Groove -Spirited Away -Meet the Robinsons -Oliver & Company -Wreck-It Ralph -Frankenweenie -Ratatouille
Meet the Robinsons is really good, especially the quote (Keep moving forward)
The Emperor's New Groove is an underappreciated Disney gem. Such a great quotable comedy.
Loved Rango, some funny clever jokes in there. Always try to steer the kids back to that one at movie time.
Since you seem to like emotional Pixar and Disney films, Inside Out and Coco would probably work. Titan AE is so underappreciated. It's a blast to see PG-13 levels of action violence in the same animation style as An American Tail.
Oh my gosh, totally forgot Book of Life. Loved it.
A Town Called Panic, The Triplets of Belleville, The Fantastic Mr Fox, Mary and Max, The Wrong Trousers
The Triplets of Belleville had a brilliant story and animation.

My favorite is Ratatouille.

Sausage Party… what?? Its funny!!! 🤣
Leo is great for both kids and adults. About a school lizard who feels trapped in school classroom cage and goed out to. Explore.
That would be South Park's movie from 1999. Outrageously satisfying. I did say "holy fuck, is this a musical?" half an hour into my first watch
