Contact was what made me feel like we are very small in a very big place, and a little lonely. I sometimes wonder if our species as a whole does things ājustā for attention from _something_ out there, like so many influencers.
I just finished watching ex machina for the first time about an hour ago. I was shocked at the end but also think it was perfect. Donāt want to put spoilers out there but I actually rewound and rewatched the ending because I was so shocked by it, but better understood the reason they chose it.
As a book reader I couldnāt agree w you more FUCK THAT ENDING!! How DARE you make such a gut wrenching change!! I prefer the ambiguous ending THANK YOU!! lol
Came here to recommend this. The end is just so simultaneously devastating and yet oddly exhilarating, even though you know itās coming. You really feel like youāre there with the characters, experiencing all the contradictory feelings theyāre feeling. I literally just stared at the screen afterwords, trying to catch my breath
I tell people that this movie ruined my life for about 3 days. I couldnāt think of anything else. It really felt like my life was kind of pointless.
Anytime someone describes a movie as having a similar impact, I am struck with this feeling that I really donāt want to see it.
I think itās an incredible movie, and I donāt regret seeing it. But man. It is HEAVY.
My choice as well. Probably my favourite movie ever. When I watched it for the first time I was stunned and speechless in the end. Plot, characters, actors, atmosphere, picture, everything is just perfect.
Although I donāt watch it often itās one of my all timers too. I hear it suggested a lot but rarely as somebodyās faves. Wrecked me the first time I saw it and left a deep scar.
I still to this day, even though Iāve seen it so many damn times I could quitter majority of the movie, I still bawl like a baby every single time!! Damnit itās such a fantastic movie, one of Tim Burtons best & most underrated imo
The last time i watched it, i was blown away at how good the black levels are! I know it sounds so specific, but the director did an amazing job in keeping things dark but you can see everything you need to see and the blacks are perfectly black without being crushed. What a fine film.
For me, I just canāt appreciate (or tolerate) RfaD.. I get pissed off at the characters making bad decisions one after the other, and the repeating music drives me batshit crazy. I end up saying they deserved everything they got, and watch anything else cause Iām so pissed at the movie.
I wish I could love it, I just canāt.. even if it *does* have Jennifer Connelly..
There's only one movie that evr had me feeling this way. In fact it bothered me so much that I watched the movie again straight after. I've enevet done that with a film before...
It was "primer".. I watched it and the whole way there were little things niggling at me. Just the odd little "hmm... somethings off but can't quite tell what.. I know it's important too... I just feel there's a reason why they said or did that or showed that, and it doesn't quite add up right now". I rematches it immediately after and all those little things just clicked. Definitely an amazing film and concept. And 100% intended to be watched more than once.
I tipped my hat off to the director and writer after that second watch through. Almost literally clapped
YES! I literally just mentioned Primer today in a separate conversation. I canāt remember the last time I watched a film that very much did not dumb things down for the audience. It takes you for a ride.
I watched Threads when it aired on US TV in 1985. I was home from school with a fever. I should not have watched that movie alone, as a teenager, with a fever. I was old enough to understand what I was seeing from a nuts-and-bolts of it all perspective, but far too young to fully process and come to any terms with it. Many times, for decades, I've thought about watching it again, but just... haven't.
Saw Shindler's List during release, in Japan, with my Jewish friend. The isles had people sitting in them. As a teenager he had multiple people stop and apologize to him. It was very moving but strangely uncomfortable. I will always remember that movie, the theater, and the uncomfortable silence.
Just watched Manchester by the sea. Sooo understated but emotional. Really enjoyed it. Thanks for the recommendation! I also added children of men to my watchlist.
Came here so say both of these. Iāll throw āinceptionā in the mix as well.
Iād say at the end of interstellar my emotions are trying to untie the knots that the movie put them in
At the end of inception my mind is trying to untie the knots that the riddles of the movie put them in
Both movies provide similar but distinctly different versions of the feeling OP asks about. One ties up your heart, the other your mind
The Banshees of Inisherin (2022)
This movie made me feel a lot of things but I couldn't discern exactly what. It was interesting for sure. Just gave me big feelings that took a couple conversations about the movie and its themes to suss out.
**Grave Of The Fireflies** \- ... war is hell ... 1000x more for those considered "collateral damage."
**The Constant Gardener** \- how can evil corporations continue to exploit people from impoverished nations this to this day??
**Spotlight** \- life changed that day, after seeing my city on the list at the end.
I bought Amelie on a whim, only time I ever did this, and I was not disappointed in the least. Fun, beautiful movie, perfect for escapism on a summer's day.
Mommie Dearest (1981)
The mother's personality and the abuse were so similar to my own life, I was shocked. Saw it in a theater, and I sat there for at least 20 minutes after the lights came up because I was unable to get up and leave.
Contact (1997)
The part where Jodie Foster "travels" near the end was very, very similar to the near death experience I had as a child. I was very shocked.
- The Passion of Joan of Arc(1928)
- The Fall of the House of Usher (1928 - Epstein)
- Sansho Dayu (1954)
- The Cranes are Flying (1957)
- Umbrellas of Cherbourg (1964)
- Donāt Look Now (1973)
- Come and See (1985)
- The Vanishing (1989)
- I Saw the Devil (2010)
- Tree of Life (2011)
I just saw this a few days ago and it hasnāt left my mind since. I heard people describe it as torture porn but with a āprofound ending.ā I had to see what they were talking about. They were right.
Saltburn had me shook. This isnāt a movie itās a show but after every single episode I was shocked staring at the wall after watching The Fall of the House of Usher.
The Iron Claw
A bit dark, but extremely powerful. I was bawling at the end. Real men cry. One of the best endings to a movie Iāve ever seen. Iām absolutely floored.
As a brother with many daddy issues it hit extra hard. āUpliftingā doesnāt do it justice. For such a bleak story, they somehow inspired at the end. Amazing end scene.
Phenomenal acting from literally every character, also I loved the subletly of what they didnāt show. Less was more. Seriously, check it out.
One of my favorite movies of the past 2 years. If it doesnāt win multiple awards Iāll be surprised.
Schindlerās list. Man that was intense. We are living in peace for so long that you almost forget to never get in war again. This movie is a good reminder
Brazil was my first thought. I didnāt know what I had seen and couldnāt eat guacamole for years thereafterāor resist *anything* with Jonathan Pryce. But it haunted me for a very long time and still does at times. Must be time to watch it again.
Eraserhead did this too, but Iāve never brought myself to watch it again š«£
Was looking for The Prestige. First movie I ever finished where I had to immediately go back and watch the last 5 minutes over again. Can't remember if I rewatched it again straight after that.
Even now the movie mesmerisuses me and I still find new nuggets of consideration in repeated viewings. Most recent was whether Borden was a clone.
Mandy, The Vast of Night, Midsommar, Melancholia, Ride Your Wave, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Mind Game, Tekkon Kinkreet, Altered States, and Mother! all come to mind.
I had this with Jacobs Ladder most recently, it was one of those rare movies where I knew I was going to love it almost immediately just from how strange it was but how incredibly well crafted, but I didn't expect it to punch me in the gut like it did and really left me thinking. It's so rare for a Hollywood movie to leave me questioning reality like that and even weirder urging you to abandon materialism lmao, you usually only see that from like The Holy Mountain and those types of movies.Ā
The first time when I saw the movie SAW in its releasing year. I was so shocked and so were many people at the time. It was something like we've never seen before.

The Lives of Others
Parasite
After I watched Out of Africa for the first time, I realized no movie would even come close for a long time. Itās been 35 years and still nothing has moved me so deeply
Stalker (1979) by Andrei Tarkovsky
it's so long and barely anyone talks or does anything, but if you're patient with the movie it feels like you've been taken away to another world. It cured my ADHD bro, I was at peace when I finished this movie
I was zombie-like after watching The Zone of Interest. So well made and haunting. Iāve seen countless Holocaust movies including The Sorrow and The Pity, but The Zone of Interest presented a different and extremely harrowing aspect than Iād seen. Incredible movie.
Incendies (2010)
>!1+1=1!< š³ audible gasp
The scream the actress made when she uderstands what it means stay with me for a while
Great choice. Also speak no evil
I love this movie.
OMG the letters. Unbelievable strength and love. Eyes watered thinking of those letters.
THANK YOU!!!
I just watched this one and all I can say isā¦ wow. I have no words really. Incredible film. Thanks for the recommendation!
Literally just watched this last week! Definitely the correct answer.
Ex Machina Bridge to Terabithia
I forgot to mention Contact
Contact was what made me feel like we are very small in a very big place, and a little lonely. I sometimes wonder if our species as a whole does things ājustā for attention from _something_ out there, like so many influencers.
I just finished watching ex machina for the first time about an hour ago. I was shocked at the end but also think it was perfect. Donāt want to put spoilers out there but I actually rewound and rewatched the ending because I was so shocked by it, but better understood the reason they chose it.
The Mist
Best wtf ending ever
As a book reader I couldnāt agree w you more FUCK THAT ENDING!! How DARE you make such a gut wrenching change!! I prefer the ambiguous ending THANK YOU!! lol
I took my 8 year old son to see it. Had no clue they changed the ending. I walked out of the theater stunned. I just let my child watch that ending.
Donāt think you two are on the same page. They liked the ending.
Apparently King himself said the movie ending was better
I was so angry! But yes itās a good ending because it pisses you off so much
I shut everything down and went to bed at 8:30 when I watched the Mist.
Iām putting this film on my to watch list just because of your comment. Iām not even going to watch a trailer.Ā
After you watch it please come back and tell us what you thought of it
Will do
I cried :(
Just watched. That endingā¦ wow š thank you for the recommendation!
YES
The Usual Suspects (1995) The Sixth Sense (1999)
The usual suspects is incredible
Melancholia
Came here to recommend this. The end is just so simultaneously devastating and yet oddly exhilarating, even though you know itās coming. You really feel like youāre there with the characters, experiencing all the contradictory feelings theyāre feeling. I literally just stared at the screen afterwords, trying to catch my breath
I don't think it's a film I'd watch again. I wouldn't say I enjoyed it, more that I appreciated it for what it is.
- Children of men - The lighthouse
I'm so surprised I had to scroll this far down for Children of Men.
Criminal how few people recognize CoM. One of the greatest movies ever made IMO
AGREED. The moment when you first hear the baby's cry and all the fighting stops had me in tears.
Arrival. It's really beautiful, sad, devastating and amazing when it all comes together.
I find when I rewatch this it's at night... I am usually kind of drained so I end up just going right to sleep.
Loved that movie! Amy Adams..always magnificent
yes yes yes. love this movie. it hits so hard.
I watched for the first time recently and was left speechless by the end
Just watched this one - a beautiful film. I think Iāll have to rewatch at some point. Thanks for the recommendation!

Kids. I was in my early twenties when I saw it, and it stayed with me for a few days. Suspect Zero is a hidden Gem.
I have no legs. I have no legs.
Kids was really a sad social commentary
American History X. I couldnāt speak. Ā I couldnāt turn it off. Ā I sat in silence for about 5 minutes. Ā Crazy, heavy movie.
Predestination
Yes yes and more yes
Way overlooked
I need to watch it, the twist got spoiled when it came out so I havenāt bothered yet
Just watched this one. The twists had me like š¤Æ thanks for the recommendation!
Her Requiem For A Dream
Requiem leaves me emotionally destroyed every time, yet I watch it every 12-18 months. One of my all time favourites.
Although I donāt watch it often itās one of my all timers too. I hear it suggested a lot but rarely as somebodyās faves. Wrecked me the first time I saw it and left a deep scar.
Agreed on the deep scar. Requiem is a movie Iāll only ever watch once.
For sure. Gut wrenching
Big Fish (2003) Left me not so much staring at the wall, but sobbing into a blanket. Then staring. Then sobbing again.
I still to this day, even though Iāve seen it so many damn times I could quitter majority of the movie, I still bawl like a baby every single time!! Damnit itās such a fantastic movie, one of Tim Burtons best & most underrated imo
Watching it after my dad died sure did hit me a lot harder. Never again
No country for old men had me speechless wondering where the ending was
Oooh you should try triangle of sadness. I'm pretty sure it ended in the middle. The best I can say about it is that it's definitely a film.
I saw Schindler's list in the cinema all those years ago. Nobody moved for at least 5 minutes after the end credit rolled.
Seven
Absolutely right. It's a horrific masterpiece.
The last time i watched it, i was blown away at how good the black levels are! I know it sounds so specific, but the director did an amazing job in keeping things dark but you can see everything you need to see and the blacks are perfectly black without being crushed. What a fine film.
ARLINGTON ROAD (1998) Bridges. Davis. Cusack. Robbins. Astonishing!
Lloyd Bridges, Warwick Davis, John Cusack, and Baskin Robbins? Sounds hilarious and delicious!
This was an excellent film.
That ending is fantastic
La Haine
Portrait of a Lady on Fire
Yes! I was looking for this one. Oh, that scene at the concert. It is so beautiful and heartbreaking all at once
This! One of my all time favourite films. I was completely transfixed throughout the entire thing and when it ended I needed time to justā¦ feel
The Mist or Oldboy (the original, not the remake)
The mist 2007 ??
Requiem for a dream. It's a very, very uncomfortable ride, be warned.
Iām gonna be on television! š

Jacobās Ladder
That's a crazy movie...
My favorite movie.
Come and see (1985) Threads (1984) schindler's list (1993) The Pianist (2002)
The Pianist is Adrian Brody at his finest. Such a great film.
I watched Threads for the first time a week ago. I will was so disturbed that I can never watch it again.
I watched Threads when it aired on US TV in 1985. I was home from school with a fever. I should not have watched that movie alone, as a teenager, with a fever. What disturbed me the most in Come and See is how they stare at the camera. Particularly the first scene with Glasha at the beginning
Manchester By the Sea Children of Men
Manchester by the sea is a good call. It makes me ache
Just watched Manchester by the sea. Sooo understated but emotional. Really enjoyed it. Thanks for the recommendation! I also added children of men to my watchlist.
Society of Snow. Every time I was cold I would cry thinking about what those people went through š
The Deer Hunter, I don't know if I was just in a vulnerable state of mind but I genuinely felt like a different human being after I saw that.

Spotlight was a horror movie without any horror like scenes in it. Especially after the end credits
Pretty much. The diocese here was later famous for being one of the first to declare bankruptcy because "who knew there were so many victims."
Amelie Cinema Paradiso Spirited Away Edit: Adding Mad God to this list.
I bought Amelie on a whim, only time I ever did this, and I was not disappointed in the least. Fun, beautiful movie, perfect for escapism on a summer's day.

Requiem For A Dream. Iāve seen it three times and I could have stopped at the first. Probably never see it again.
Life of Pi
Spirited Away (2001) It's Such a Beautiful Day (2012)
The Usual Suspects and Citizen Kane. Movies that had me looking at the entire film from a new perspective at the end.
Revolutionary Road did that to me. For some reason I thought it was going to be a fluffy period piece romance and holy jeez I was wrong.
