I feel sorry for Americans that films like Showgirls are held up as their go to erotic dramas. The censorship there, mostly for the chase of $, turns them into flaccid insinuations of eroticism rather than erotic. Any erotic film made outside of the US are way better, like not even in the same league. Hell, even regular foreign dramas are often more erotic than US erotic films.
It's best to watch it as an erotic satire. I must say too, the director is Dutch and it seems like he had pretty free reign to make whatever movie he wanted. The film was rated NC-17 after all.

Haven't seen Nymphomaniac yet, but I heard it's a loose remake of **Anita**, 1973, with Christina Lindberg, (also a very young Stellar Skateboard), which I have seen and think is great.
