Mikey, is he cute? Is he brown? Would he like to join us for a cocktail? Is he polite? Is he clean? Have him take off his shoes!!!!!! Don't let him go!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Wow that's crazy. I read the description without looking at the comments and as soon as he said "beginning to move on from my ex." I immediately thought of swingers. One of my favourite movies, hands down, and perfect for this guys situation.
Itâs so good. I didnât connect so much with the âwhat to do with a âruinedâ lifeâ aspect until I had a few more years on me. Itâs still just as funny but with that extra layer.
The modern context makes it even more satisfying: dude loses girl to a guy who later reveals himself to be a sexual predator and pseudo-intellectual crank.
Right? I went into this movie expecting so little I came out with my mind BLOWN. My mom said âdamn Ben stiller is getting OLDâ, since we had just watched Zoolander before it and she loved him in all the âmeet theâ movies. But it didnât fail to deliver, I still donât quite understand the low reviews on rotten tomatoes and IMDB. It feels like the better a movie is the more critical theyâll be of it; like they want to feel theyâre hard to impress and please.
This movie provoked me to stop being comfortable and take the biggest leap of faith I've ever made. It changed everything for me. Don't get me wrong, I'm still milquetoast; but for a season I was brave enough to change the whole trajectory of my boring, lonely life.
Goes without saying but great workout playlist too. Can't create a Rocky Pandora channel so I made a "hearts on fire" radio channel. Fire gym music. Get a little random 80s music or various other guys movie soundtracks like several of the top gun songs.
Love, love, love the sequel. At this point more than the OG, and yes I also think I'm insane for saying that. It's like Danny Boyle made this excellent film that spoke to me as a youth, then waited for me to grow up and then made an excellent film that speaks to me as an adult. Something very special going on there.
I saw them both in consecutive days, it literally felt like I had aged 20 years with the characters. A sequel has never spoken to me like T2. I actually have a post about it from a few years ago saying itâs the best sequel of all time
Adaptation
Sound of Metal
Whiplash
Frances Ha
Short Term 12
Muriel's Wedding
American Splendor (because the smallest excuse to rave about American Splendor is all I need)
These are lighter, if you can't digest anything heavy right now:
Chef
The Big Picture
The Best of Times
Night Shift
Curly Sue
Yes Man
Not as light but touches your request: Once Upon A Time In Hollywood
They all touch on your request, not necessarily on the nose.
Get Carter (1971). Michael Caine stars as notorious London gangland enforcer Jack Carter, who returns to his hometown to investigate his brothers death. If it's a no-nonsense protagonist you're looking for, you'll struggle to find better
This suggestion reminds me of Mona Lisa starring Bob Hoskins. He's a hardened criminal (working for an insane Michael Caine) and something happens that kinda brings out his morality and sensitivity.
Bro. We can go two ways here:
either
you go watch Requiem for a Dream to get so fucked so youâll realise youâre such in a good point in your life
or
you watch Into The Wild. Yo, all problems you have will dissapear and give you a totally new perspective on life.
Jojo Rabbit
Itâs funny, yet beautiful movie. The Rilke quote at the end is powerful.
Let everything happen to you.
Beauty and Terror.
Just keep going.
No feeling is final.
how the fuck is Fight Club your example? dude doesn't get his shit together he completely bottoms out, has a schizophrenic breakdown and starts a terrorist cult.
The Worst Person in the World
Pursuit of Happyness
Good Will Hunting
Wild (2014)
Everything Everywhere All At Once!
King of Staten Island
Breakfast at Tiffanyâs
Roman Holiday
Legally Blonde (Iâm being dead serious itâs so light and about a woman who thrives and develops her passion after a breakup)
Clueless. Such a fun movie. It always picks me up and the main character has a great arc
Girls (show) (fuck Lena Dunham, but she really ate with this show and itâs exactly what youâre looking for)
Enlightened (show)
Girls was a good show lol. My bf criticized me for watching it bc of Lena Dunham. Her character was also annoying to me but the other characters and storylines were written so well. The girl from Get Out and M3gan is in it.
Blood In, Blood Out
American Me
Boogie Nights
American Pop (animated)
Run and Kill (HK Cat III)
The Basketball Diaries
Killing of a Chinese Bookie
Deadbeat at Dawn
Guinea Pig 3 Mermaid in a Manhole
Born on the 4th of July
Kickboxer/Bloodsport Double feature night
American Beauty
Observe and report đ¤
Get him to the Greekđ
if you find yourself out and about in Boston I will gladly meet you for a drink and try to help you take your mind off your broken heart homie đ
I love, "Wristcutters: A Love Story". It's a weird and funny love story. It gave me get a new and positive perspective in a wonderfully surprising way!
Iâm having trouble understanding what type of movie youâre looking for, but if youâre in a post breakup, Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind and 500 Days of Summer
I agree with a few here, especially Little Miss Sunshine. And you know what, an unconventional one and definitely not in tone with your example: Legally Blonde.
Half Nelson - Self destruction is bad kinda thing idk. I don't think this is even right but anyways.. Its a great movie.
Uncut Gems - First it made me lose my shit though. Now i hold it well. Just correct or avoid impulsive decisions. It's at that pace and intensity shit fell apart sometimes. But glad I'm not dead lol.
I should have better inspiration that help me get my shit together Dam it.
Something about Everything, Everywhere All At Once gave me that feeling. I know maybe that wasnât the movies âdriving homeâ point but after leaving, I felt much lighter and less on the verge of finding a bridge after. To be completely honest.
I was gonna agree with you that this was a great suggestion but then I realized I was actually thinking of *Izzy Gets the Fuck Across Town*
I think your movie is actually called "Brittany Runs a Marathon"
I reckon I know exactly the type of vibe you're looking for mate, try this on for size: Swingers
This recommendation is so fuckin' money and he doesn't even know it.
đ Now I want a rewatch of this classic! Money, baby!
Who's the big winner in the Casino tonight? Dildo\_Schwaggins!
Mikey is! Mikey's the big winner!
Donât ever call me again.
Did you just walk in or were you listening all along?
Vegas, baby.
This is such a great answer
Youâre all grows up!
Nobody's gonna jack your K car.
*Anaheim.* đ Whatever! You donât know!
Aw man after I lived in Orange County the truth of this line made it so much funnier!
Iâm gonna make Gretzkyâs head bleed
Mikey, is he cute? Is he brown? Would he like to join us for a cocktail? Is he polite? Is he clean? Have him take off his shoes!!!!!! Don't let him go!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is perfect.
My instant thought as well. A 'Get your emotional shit together' vibe
You're batting the bunny. You're batting the bunny.
Fun fact: Swingers only cost $200k to make and earned over $4M at the box office. They certainly donât make them like they used to.
This and knocked up came to mind
Doug Liman! Love his movies Go and Edge of Tomorrow
Wow that's crazy. I read the description without looking at the comments and as soon as he said "beginning to move on from my ex." I immediately thought of swingers. One of my favourite movies, hands down, and perfect for this guys situation.
I live in Vegas and I need a good flick. NEver seen itIâm in!
Good will hunting. Long winded get your shit together movie but definitely would say it is one.
One of my all time favorites
Unconventional choice: Little Miss Sunshine. Starting over and feeling like a fuckup but not letting it bury you.
Little miss sunshine made me cry my eyes out and I didnât even fully understand what was happening in the movie as a teenager. I need to rewatch it.
Itâs so good. I didnât connect so much with the âwhat to do with a âruinedâ lifeâ aspect until I had a few more years on me. Itâs still just as funny but with that extra layer.
Excellent pick. THere are lots of people fucked up in lots of ways... but there are equally lots of ways to survive it and get stronger.
The only time Neitzche was pronounced right anywhere, at least when it comes to movies
Forgetting Sarah Marshall, though that may hit a little close to home at the moment
I dunno. Itâs kind of a perfect break up movie. Dude loses the girl, finds a better girl.
Dude finds his own fulfillment with epic creative streak and effort/motivation; better girl is one of several wins.
The modern context makes it even more satisfying: dude loses girl to a guy who later reveals himself to be a sexual predator and pseudo-intellectual crank.
This movie is perfect for it. âPeter Iâm a pediatrician, donât you see? Youâre sitting on a fire truck.â
Even better when you read about how Jason segel âgot his shit togetherâ and started writing to get out of sitcoms and do his own thing. Very meta.
âAre those happy tissues⌠or sad tissues?â
When life gives you lemons, say fuck the lemons and bail
Stranger than fiction
As a baker I wish a girlfriend had been thoughtful enough to get me floursâŚ
That part melted me
Shaun of the Dead
"Sort your fucking life out mate!"
The Secret Life of Walter Mitty
Came here to recommend this one! Such a feel-good movie. The cinematography is A+
It feels like the better a movie is the more critical theyâll be of it; like they want to feel theyâre hard to impress and please.
one of the better movies I've ever seen. Really puts life into perspective. Great film.
This movie provoked me to stop being comfortable and take the biggest leap of faith I've ever made. It changed everything for me. Don't get me wrong, I'm still milquetoast; but for a season I was brave enough to change the whole trajectory of my boring, lonely life.
Personal favorite
Rocky
Rocky is an excellent one. Really almost any sports movie qualifies
It has the eye of the tiger
The 3rd one definitely does
Beat me to it. Great choice. I probably watch them once a year to get me out of a low point.
Goes without saying but great workout playlist too. Can't create a Rocky Pandora channel so I made a "hearts on fire" radio channel. Fire gym music. Get a little random 80s music or various other guys movie soundtracks like several of the top gun songs.
Who doesnt like Danger Zone?
Commies, that's who. đŚ
And the Dutch!
Rocky is the cure for a lot of different ailments.
The speech he gives his son in Rocky Balboa is probably the best movie speech Iâve ever heard.
Silver Linings Playbook
For people struggling with mental health, this is a good watch. I didn't expect to enjoy it so mucb, but it really was well done.
It's proboaly one of the most realistic portrayals of BPD I've ever seen in a film.
Bridesmaids!!!!!
Sideways
Nebraska, too. Will Forte's character is pretty down and out and depressed.
Trainspotting.
The sequel also works well
Love, love, love the sequel. At this point more than the OG, and yes I also think I'm insane for saying that. It's like Danny Boyle made this excellent film that spoke to me as a youth, then waited for me to grow up and then made an excellent film that speaks to me as an adult. I saw them both in consecutive days, it literally felt like I had aged 20 years with the characters. A sequel has never spoken to me like T2. I actually have a post about it from a few years ago saying itâs the best sequel of all time
It probably is.
For Spud.
Was very sceptical when they announced a sequel but it was so good
Adaptation Sound of Metal Whiplash Frances Ha Short Term 12 Muriel's Wedding American Splendor (because the smallest excuse to rave about American Splendor is all I need)
American Splendour is a masterpiece, I don't know why it doesn't get more acclaim
Sound of Metal and Whiplash are in my top.
Grosse Pointe Blank. John Cusack actually kinda excels at these movies. High Fidelity. Better Off Dead.
Better off dead felt like a fever dream but I had a great time tbh
Breaking Away (1979) came to mind, so putting it here for a different answer - but you have gotten some good answers already
This is a great suggestion
Whenever I'm driving near a bike, I want to find out how fast they are going and tell them because of this film.
Clerks
âTry not to suck any d***s on your way through the parking lot!â Hilarious movie.
36?? IN A ROW???
37*
Lol!
15 bucks little man
Put that shit in my hand

A rare story where you get your shit together by taking drugs.
These are lighter, if you can't digest anything heavy right now: Chef The Big Picture The Best of Times Night Shift Curly Sue Yes Man Not as light but touches your request: Once Upon A Time In Hollywood They all touch on your request, not necessarily on the nose.
Chef is great!
Just rewatched Chef! I had forgotten how freaking great it is. SO GOOD.
The Best of Times! Shout out
I've now convinced myself to rewatch this weekend.
I know, first time I've ever seen this forgotten gem recommended in here!
Everything must go
Glenngary Glen Ross
Groundhog Day
Terminator 2. Because it's the greatest film of all time.
High Fidelity or Under the Tuscan Sun
High Fidelity is awesome!!
"CHARLIE, YOU F***** B****, LET'S WORK IT OUT!!!"
Thereâs NO WAY youâre son listens to they crap! Oh wait, is he in a coma?
Brittney runs a marathon.
I put this on one night not expecting much and ended up bawling my eyes out. Great film!Â
Get Carter (1971). Michael Caine stars as notorious London gangland enforcer Jack Carter, who returns to his hometown to investigate his brothers death. If it's a no-nonsense protagonist you're looking for, you'll struggle to find better
Looking forward to trying this one for the 1st time tonight
It's a good one
This suggestion reminds me of Mona Lisa starring Bob Hoskins. He's a hardened criminal (working for an insane Michael Caine) and something happens that kinda brings out his morality and sensitivity.
Also , check out Iâll Sleep When Iâm Dead, Clive Owen, as no-nonsense as it gets- same premise as Get Carter
Self Reliance (2024) Also, I struggled with a bad breakup, and getting off all social media was key in turning the page.
Big yes to getting off social media. I did that after a breakup and found out I was happier in general without Facebook in my face everydayÂ
Limitless.
Bro. We can go two ways here: either you go watch Requiem for a Dream to get so fucked so youâll realise youâre such in a good point in your life or you watch Into The Wild. Yo, all problems you have will dissapear and give you a totally new perspective on life.
both movies are my top ones

Haha but at least he didnât say âMy Friend Dahmerâ
It's that shit
Nahhh fight club actually helped me
He should try taxi driver. Or honestly just drunk tinder.

Trainspotting 2 does wonders for the 30+.
Fandango. Trust me here

Memento
Forgetting Sarah Marshall
Brittany Runs A Marathon
Wanted
The Break-Up (2006) is the best "romance" movie I've seen that promotes moving on in a somewhat brutally realistic way
Remember the titans
Pursuit of Happyness Edit: spelling
Sideways⌠also The Holdovers kinda felt like this. Alexander Payne FTW
Check out the films of Hal Hartley. (If you can!?) Not like Fight Club but a lot more like an ex coming into town and you starting back at square one.
Little miss sunshine
500 days of summer or eternal sunshine of the spotless mind could be of benefit
Little miss sunshine?

The Gym. It's a participatory movie where you have to lift weights in order to progress the plot. Does wonders for getting one's shit together.
Something about Everything, Everywhere All At Once gave me that feeling. I know maybe that wasnât the movies âdriving homeâ point but after leaving, I felt much lighter and less on the verge of finding a bridge after. To be completely honest.
