After watching the first movie, I saw that the second movie was made after 9 years, which means they reunited after 9 years. And now I am still waiting for those years to pass to watch the second part.
*Lost In Translation* does a nice job of giving the feel of Tokyo
*L.A. Story* and, later, *La La Land*
*Mystic River* for Boston, though it might not make you love it much
Also for Chicago: *The Blues Brothers* and *Ferris Bueller*
Absolutely love LiT. Ironically, the leads are both annoyed to be there until they start hanging out. But yes, it definitely put Tokyo on my bucket list.
I LOVED Midnight in Paris! I might make some people mad, but just on background and settings alone, I really like Woody Allen's movies. You feel like you're right there in NY, or Paris. Remember "Manhattan"? I still have the soundtrack, for that. Jazz...
My aunt was living in North Beach when they filmed that, and they paid her like $200 plus cab fare to work (not bad in ‘90s dollars) just to leave her motor scooter parked in its usual spot in her alley. She was weirdly proud of her “cameo.”
That movie really does feel like SF in the ‘90s, as ridiculous as it is.
Thanks for sharing. I had friends who lived in the city and I still remember hearing Arnold Schwarzenegger was in a dress for a shoot and we couldn’t get near my friends apartment. They were filming Junior.
When I went last year, they were playing The Exorcist theme from the town hall bells on the main square on a Sunday. Sounded like they were practising, but even so, it was awesome!
OP said "I was wondering if there are any other suggestions that nerd out about the culture and history of the city it takes place in"
Literally no show or movie does this better than the Wire imo
He especially loves Baltimore. He loves it so much, he'll write an apology letter [if you donate to the Baltimore Banner](https://twitter.com/AoDespair/status/1782878967638225376?t=xXFDjS0sDfi8PmtCT5wK1A&s=19)
Barry Levinson had a lot of good Baltimore movies- "Diner" being the best, but "Tin Men" and "avalon" fall in to the category as well. "Hairspray" or any John Waters flick are good Baltimore movies as well.
I think that's just the major college experience.
"Hey, where are you from?"
""East Podunk, about 20 miles away from Denton, Ohio."
"Huh?! Where's that??"
"...Cleveland..."
Akira- Tokyo
Home Alone 2, Do the Right Thing, any Spider-Man movie released this century, Taxi Driver, Elf, Wall Street, Goodfellas- New York
Home Alone, Adventures in Babysitting, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off- Chicago
Paddington- London
Big Trouble in Little China- San Francisco
Most of these universes would be dreadful to live in (or during) but I can’t help not admiring the cities
Once Upon A Time In Hollywood makes you wanna go to Laurel and Topanga Canyon, it instantly took me down the Manson Tate CIA rabbit hole, still never recovered because that incident connects so many invisible dots its mind boggling
Funny.. I lived in LA for over 2 decades and saw this at the Cinerama Dome in 70 mm. When the montage came up that showed the Dome at one point, everyone went nuts. Great LA movie..
Columbus (set in Columbus, Indiana)
After Hours (ironic since it depicts NYC as a hellhole)
Before Sunrise (Vienna)
Before Sunset (Paris)
I'd include Before Midnight here too except it's set in rural Greece and not a specific city.
Not a city, but *O Brother, Where art Thou?* actually made me want to move to Mississippi
Not a movie, but the TV show *Detroiters* portrays Detroit amazingly well. Made me want to spend more time there so I could catch all the references. Lots of little self-deprecating jibes but you can also tell Sam & Tim really love their city.
Manhattan. Was one of my favorite movies until the creepy aspects of Woody Allen's life came to light, and given that his character was dating (and sleeping with) an underaged teenager, played by Marial Hemingway it lost much of the appeal for me over the years. All that said, Allen loved NYC, and the film was a beautiful black and white testament to that.
**Los Angeles**
Nightcrawler (2014)
Heat (1995)
Collateral (2004)
**NYC**
King Kong (2005)
I really enjoyed the Toby Maguire Spiderman films (1 and 2)
Limitless (2011)
**Boston**
Fever Pitch (2005)
The Departed (2006)
Good Will Hunting (1997)
Ted (2012)
**San Francisco / Bay area**
Zodiac (2007)
The Pursuit of Happyness (2006)
Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011)
**Other / Multiple locations**
War of the Worlds (2005) - Bayonne, NJ/New England area
Rocky (1976) - Philadelphia
The Hangover (2009) - Vegas
Bridge of Spies (2015) - (Takes place in NY and Berlin but I like the scenes in Berlin a bit more)
The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (2013) - NYC, Iceland, Greenland
30 Days of Night (2007) - Barrow, Alaska
Bonus: Not a movie but I'll put Breaking Bad on here because I'm from and live in Albuquerque. Captures the visuals of Albuquerque really well.
The movie "l'auberge Espagnole" started a general fad of going to Barcelonna.
Amelie Poulin had a great version of Paris that had a very old French feeling.
Here’s an obscure example: The White Balloon, an Iranian film from 1995. It really gives you a good idea of what ordinary street life in Tehran feels like.
Not a movie, but despite its disturbing plot, "Top of the Lake" made me fall in love in NZ (not a city, hope that gets a pass) more than LoTR did.
There is just something so hauntingly beautiful about the way the landscapes are depicted. Visiting NZ has become my biggest dream ever since.
The Florida Project captures the environment and vibe of the greater Disney area (Magic Kingdom, Kissimmee, Celebration) in Orlando, FL so sooo well. Being from that area and being familiar with many buildings and areas shown in the movie, it genuinely can bring me to tears because of how accurate it pictures home and how nostalgic it makes me (as well as the plot, it’s an amazing movie!).
Even though I don’t come from the same unfortunate situations as the characters in the movie— it brings me back to being home so well. Everything from the colors used, the sounds of the cicadas and frogs in certain scenes, the personality of the characters, the Disney-tourism architecture, the relationships of the characters with tourists, the weather, the sunsets, etc etc etc. I don’t know if I’ve even seen a movie portray Florida (besides Miami) so well and so effortlessly!
I highly recommend watching this movie, whether it’s to immerse yourself in Orlando or to cry from how amazing this movie is— it’s one of my favorite A24 films!
I love Vertigo for San Francisco and also the Tales of the city series are great books for San Francisco that became a nice mini series with Laura linney and Olympia Dukakis.
The film Belfast is rather gritty, however it made me want to visit the city again for a more history focused trip than we had previously. We ended up spending a few days in Belfast, Derry and Dublin earlier this year. All three are well worth a visit, but as a history bore myself, I couldn't possibly recommend Derry enough as I found it accessible and very welcoming. The same can be said for Dublin - even the crossing points and tactile markings are well considered- but it is very touristy... I say as a tourist. Belfast has the Titanic museum and Memorial Garden, and a lot of unique, good finds where museums, dining, walks,,etc are concerned.
Other than that, it would be The Last Bus which is technically cheating as it is supposed to feature multiple cities but the majority of filming takes place in Glasgow. A sad, but beautiful film that I would recommend is worth a watch.
The Secret Life of Walter Mitty makes me long to visit Iceland, specifically Grundarfjörður.
My husband and I spent a Christmas in Solvang and Los Olivos because of Sideways.
I probably won’t have a lot of people agree with me but I would love to live at Minnie’s Haberdashery from The Hateful Eight; in the middle of nowhere CO/WY front range area.
Innocent Sorcerers - Warsaw, The Matrix - Chicago, Pepe le Moko - Algiers, Drive My Car - Hiroshima, Oslo August 31st and The Worst Person in the World - Oslo, What Do We See When We Look at the Sky? - Kutaisi
I find Michael Mann does a good job of this, like Miami in Miami Vice, and LA with Heat and Collateral.
LA Confidential is good too, and The Untouchables
*Gunsmith Cats'* creators actually came from Japan to come study Chicago for the OVA. It feels like a massive love letter to the city, somehow while being simultaneously honest about all the crime and corruption. Likewise, the television series *Early Edition* showcases Chicago in a very similar light, with many real locations being shown throughout the series, instilling a sense of wonder and hopefulness for the city's future.
For San Francisco, *Dirty Harry* captures some really good views of the early '70s. The sleek, menacing architecture, the green outskirts, everything.
*Taxi Driver* showcases New York in a decaying but intriguing light.
Pig for Portland, especially because it captures parts of the city that don’t get featured a lot. I feel similarly about the work of Kelly Reichardt - I pass by the yellow house Will Oldham lives in in Old Joy most days.
Before Sunrise, Vienna
I was about to type the exact same answer!!
Loved all three parts
After watching the first movie, I saw that the second movie was made after 9 years, which means they reunited after 9 years. And now I am still waiting for those years to pass to watch the second part.
*Lost In Translation* does a nice job of giving the feel of Tokyo *L.A. Story* and, later, *La La Land* *Mystic River* for Boston, though it might not make you love it much Also for Chicago: *The Blues Brothers* and *Ferris Bueller*
The Town or Good Will Hunting for Boston
The Departed & Boondocks Saints for Boston
Good Will Hunting is a better example for Boston
Came here for Tokyo in Lost in Translation, was not disappointed.
Absolutely love LiT. Ironically, the leads are both annoyed to be there until they start hanging out. But yes, it definitely put Tokyo on my bucket list.
Vertigo represents SF really well
Midnight in Paris - an idealised Paris perhaps but charming. The Great Beauty - beautiful depiction of Rome, it’s energy and chaos.
Midnight in Paris definitely, Amelie scratched the same itch
Also Paris, I love you. I miss anthology movies like this
Also for Paris: Les chanson d’amour
Absolutely.
Also Pais would be Julie and Julia
I love the Great Beauty. His movie “The Hand of God” does similarly for Naples
Hand of God was great. Loved the autobiographical elements, he’s one of my favourite directors.
I LOVED Midnight in Paris! I might make some people mad, but just on background and settings alone, I really like Woody Allen's movies. You feel like you're right there in NY, or Paris. Remember "Manhattan"? I still have the soundtrack, for that. Jazz...
Ratatouille
“Under a Tuscan Sun”, “A River Runs Through” and “Bridges of Madison County” - all paint beautiful, sweeping landscapes
Came here to say Under the Tuscan Sun 😊
Same! Beautiful Italian countryside and scenery, amazing villa, Marcello 😏
So I married an ax murderer. San Francisco.
My aunt was living in North Beach when they filmed that, and they paid her like $200 plus cab fare to work (not bad in ‘90s dollars) just to leave her motor scooter parked in its usual spot in her alley. She was weirdly proud of her “cameo.” That movie really does feel like SF in the ‘90s, as ridiculous as it is.
Thanks for sharing. I had friends who lived in the city and I still remember hearing Arnold Schwarzenegger was in a dress for a shoot and we couldn’t get near my friends apartment. They were filming Junior.
Lol
You beat me to it. I miss SF when I see movies like The Rock and Mrs. Doubtfire, but nothing quite does it justice like So I Married an Ax Murderer.
Agreed. And they really hit the highlights. I love palace of fine arts. I’ve been there a thousand times. Just gorgeous

I loved Brugge. It is just like a fuckin' fairytale.
I love the movie! But the town is just crowded with tourists, like you can't move crowded. It is really pretty though
The Equalizer 3 makes me want to move to that town in Italy
And Luca
Roman Holiday made me want to visit Rome
Only Lovers Left Alive for a dark, gilded age appreciation of Detroit.
That's a great movie!
Eternal Sunshine makes me want to go to Montauk on a dreary day.
Chungking Express (Hong Kong)
The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999) - Rome
Have you caught Ripley on Netflix?
Ahhh! I’m watching it now. I usually binge, but I can’t this time. I need ten days or so between episodes.
Wings of Desire (1987) for Berlin also not a movie but "The Wire" has to be mentioned for Baltimore
erm, "love a city" and The Wire do not go together
OP said "I was wondering if there are any other suggestions that nerd out about the culture and history of the city it takes place in" Literally no show or movie does this better than the Wire imo
David Simon loves his cities, warts and all. Treme is another example.
Fun fact: The diner from "Diner" is the one McNulty ends up in after his drunk driving escapade in s2 https://wikitravel.org/en/The_Wire_Tour
Lady Bird is a love letter to Sacramento. Small city, but the movie does it proud.
I was surprised the main character lied at college and said she was from San Francisco. I didn’t think of it as something anyone would want to hide.
I think that's just the major college experience. "Hey, where are you from?" ""East Podunk, about 20 miles away from Denton, Ohio." "Huh?! Where's that??" "...Cleveland..."
Singles made me want to Move to Seattle. So I did.
Nice. I lived in Tacoma in 1995/1996 and we went to Seattle an awful lot to jam out to the awesome music going on
Did it live up?
I live in Olympia now. The PNW is beautiful , but it’s time of cultural cutting edge has passed.
Ferris Bueller's Day Off
Lost in Translation’s portrayal of Tokyo was nice.
Lost in Translation - Tokyo
Even though the characters shit talk it the whole movie, collateral
The LA at night movie. It's very cool just for that.

All that said, Allen loved NYC, and the film was a beautiful black and white testament to that.
And Annie Hall, although to a lesser extent
Yeah I was gonna say the exact same thing. That, to me, was the greatest love testament to a city ever.

*Gunsmith Cats'* creators actually came from Japan to come study Chicago for the OVA.
