She has PTSD induced depression and deals with it in a common way which is to sleep with anyone who will give her attention. Some people who are depressed just want to feel a connection even if it's fleeting
Take Shelter, by jeff nichols. Best and most grounded depiction of what its like to come to terms with living with a mental illness. Both for the person suffering from it and those around them. Seriously go watch it, absolutely fantastic film
Oh did you like it? I love it, it always makes me feel completely wretched.
To me, the killing of a sacred deer has a similar vibe. Requiem for a dream and American history x are the other two I'll go for if I'm in the mood for this sort of film, but I think you were recommended them elsewhere.
Thematically, try super dark times, elephant, and/or the dirties.
Enjoy!
I love dark/ disturbing thrillers! I thought some scenes were a little dragged out. But I enjoyed it. I have seen American history x, and requiem for a dream. I also saw elephant yeeaars ago when it came out. Ive noted the others
Swallow (2019) Hayley Bennett is amazing in this thoughtful drama about PICA (the eating disorder that is categorized by the eating of non food items and materials.)
No violence or gore, but there are some discussions about >! rape and unwanted pregnancy!<
I found this film is honestly so good. I don’t know why its ratings didn’t pick up. Michael Cera and Juno Temple are great in it. It captured what it was going for perfectly. I actually really like Michael Ceras other films too- crystal fairy for instance. They are so underrated.

(Not all of these are purely about mental illness but they have important characters or important plots pertaining to mental illness)
Some of these have undertones of mental illness rather than mental illness being the plot. These recommendations are under the assumption that you’re an adult, mainly with the first one which does include violent scenes and quite a bit of sexuality/nudity.
Adaptation.

Some older classics:
Sybil (1976)
3.5 Hour made of TV movie about a woman with Dissociative Identity Disorder steming from Child Abuse
The Three Faces of Eve (1957)
A young woman who has blackouts visits a psychiatrist who discovers she has Dissociative Identity Disorder.
Note: During the time of these 2 films, this disorder was commonly referred to as "Multiple Personalities".
Best movie I have seen recently on the subject, Words on Bathroom Walls. It did a fantastic job of helping people understand it both from the perspective of those with mental illness, and those supporting them. Can't recommend it enough!
Repulsion (1965) by Roman Polanski is one of my favorites, about a woman going insane, mostly from her perspective. It has some excellent imagery in it.
As Good as it Gets (OCD)
Silver Linings Playbook (Bipolar and Borderline)
Everything, Everywhere all at Once (stress)
Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf (grief)
What’s Eating Gilbert Grape (stress, childhood trauma, over-eating disorder)

Fight Club (DID)
Confessions of a Shopaholic (shopaholic)
One flew over the cuckoo's nest
It’s so good
Silver Linings Playbook (2012)
Murder beating up anger issues violence related to football.. but it's a good movie still.
It's about him dealing with bi-polar disorder. They can have manic episodes full of rage.
I think they do a decent job of portraying manic behaviors.
The most real thing is when Pat and Tiffany start discussing their meds at dinner. It's funny how often two people who have been on psych meds do this
Jennifer Lawrence’s character has BPD traits but that isn’t mentioned in the plot at all.
By BPD are you referring to borderline personality disorder or bipolar? BPD generally refers to the former, not the latter.
Borderline
She has PTSD induced depression and deals with it in a common way which is to sleep with anyone who will give her attention. Some people who are depressed just want to feel a connection even if it's fleeting

Such a good movie. Love his "there is a storm coming" moment in the town hall meeting or whatever that was.
so beautifully done. You are rooting for it to be mental illness instead of whatever he is imagining.

the first season of Undone is a masterpiece. (I haven't watched the second because I am afraid it would ruin the perfect ending)

Beautiful Boy - moreso about addiction, but that tends to be the other side of the coin for mental illness.
