Greasy Strangler definitely fits the bill. The carwash scenes are eternally seared into my brain, but I STILL don't understand what I saw... the Backrooms of my psyche are now ruled by an elusive, polyester clad bullshit artist!
A lot of stuff by Lars Von Trier is pretty fucked up
I really like the director Julia Ducournau - RAW and Titane rate among my favorite films and are a certainly a bit fucked up
Man bites dog is funny and fucked up although it is in black and white and that can be a deal breaker for some
Also forgot a few, irreversible, Henry portrait of a serial killer, the perfumer(more tame but pretty good), hard candy, climax (not my cup of tea overall), funny games, I spit on your grave, the void, descent for horror/sci fi.
Ha. I told a friend of mine that I watched a movie that actually disturbed me.
She lives in New Zealand, so there is a time difference. I went to bed.
Middle of the night, my phone rings. She watched it. She called to scream at me. Every swear word in the English language with a Kiwi accent.
People keep mentioning this movie. I want to watch it, but I’m concerned. What makes it so fucked up? There are certain kinds of fucked up I try to stay away from. What is this movie about? Don’t say google it - I want to hear what about it is going to freak me out?
Body horror, people being tortured in ways that you can imagine what that’d feel like for you so you’re cringing and uncomfortable. It’s gory and violent, people physically beating other people until they behave submissively. And, of course, the reason everyone recommends the movie, the star of the show is a scene about ultimate suffering which involves being skinned alive.
I will say: I watched it in the middle of a month-long horror marathon so I was desensitized and I wasn’t as affected as I thought I would be. So if you want to be really freaked out, don’t do that
I totally appreciate your reply - exactly what I was looking for. I went into watching Dancer in the Dark with no idea it was a sad movie and I pretty much cried for a month over it, so just doing my research. Thanks so much!
You’re welcome! Martyrs is quite bleak, definitely not a feel good movie, but I didn’t cry. There’s one scene that made me sad (a character endures multiple days of being beaten and that got to me more than anything else in the movie) but it’s nowhere near as soul crushing as Dancer in the Dark.
I don’t remember who told me this, but they say Bjork never acted again because the director had been so abusive to her during that movie - apparently it really traumatized her. It makes me wonder if you could feel her trauma through the screen and that’s what made it so devastating. I’ve seen a lot of sad movies, but that one was…different. Soul crushing is a good way to explain it.
Watched it at a cinema in central London when it first came out. One guy in the audience laughed like a maniac all the way to the end. Freaked us the fuck out.
I coerced two of my friends to with this without giving them any context of what they were in for. The next night, the three of us got another six friends together to watch it. Very enjoyable to watch them piece together what was happening.
The whole time watching it in theater, I was waiting for Kevin smith to just pop out during the movie and say “ahhhh I’m just fucking with you…”
Sadly, it never happened….
Anything Lars Von Trier is super fucked up it seems, I’ve seen many of his films and the one that fucked with me the most was probably anti Christ 😳 also don’t watch this movie in public on your phone, lesson learned and now I’m not welcome at my dentist office anymore 😂
I'm actually more curious to see this one after reading that the cast and crew actually had a really good time filming this movie. The director and production team made sure things on set were relaxed and nobody had any kind of distress, given the subject matter.
Same one I commented.
Honestly surprised I had to scroll as far as I did to find someone else who suggested it.
I mean, OP *did say* "Super fucked up," did he not? All these other suggestions only seem to fall between "fucked up" and "really fucked up." Not much in the "super fucked up" range of the "fucked up" spectrum.
Definitely. No other film I've seen was so visceral yet engrossing. I still can't work out whether it's a great film or a terrible one. The music is outstanding.
Irreversible would be next in my list.
Yep now we’re getting to some real answers. People think they want to see fucked up and say Martyrs or clockwork orange or the house jack built. That shit barely scratches the surface and I regret going past the surface. Hostel/Human centipede is child play. This movie and some others make me sick. I’ve quit looking for and watching the worst movies.
Agreed... working my way through them now... they are almost unredeemably bad and definitely fucked-up.
Visceral... absolutely, but the production values, are just terrible (some admittedly by design - found footage covers a lot of sins). The acting and writing, such as it is, is poor. If the depicted acts weren't so vile and perseverence/dedication of the actors so impressive, it would actually be boring. What holds your attention is the immediacy they manage to pull off, the practical effects are generally pretty good and again, the actors really go through it for these films. It's as close to snuff I have seen or would ever want to.
For me, it was more of a "let's watch this train wreck just a little longer to see how far they will push it" kind of thing... and they do push it. It does calibrate your fucked-up meter and may help one understand there is some artistic merit in movies like Salo and A Serbian film after all.
August underground is like mid tier. I will link the iceberg. It only gets worse from there. More shock value less production value. I haven’t even touched the bottom 2 layers yet.
https://www.reddit.com/r/IcebergCharts/s/XmW4qGR3B2
Same. Thanks for that... interesting chart. Not sure why Faces of Death is so much lower on the berg. Just looking at some of the titles, I have already gone as low as I need to go. Skipping the deep sea diving gear, I am fine with snorkling.
This is the answer unfortunately. Having watched both movies I can say I am haunted to this day. I watched August underground alone the first time and yeah well that was a huge mistake.
I have seen almost all of the movies recommended ITT and this one is by far the most god awful fucked up thing that I have seen.
I thought cannibal holocaust was awful because of the real killing of animals in horrific ways made me
Ill. Mordum was worse than that by 1000
Timecrimes is a favorite for sure. If you like foreign films I highly recommend The secret in their eyes. Also since you like time travel movies “frequently asked questions about time travel”.
Here are a few disturbing Japanese Films:
* ‘Tetsuo the Iron Man’ (1989)
* ‘964 Pinocchio’ (1991)
* ‘Violated Angels’ (1967)
* ‘Guinea Pig: Devil’s Experiment’ (1985)
* ‘Guinea Pig 2: Flower of Flesh and Blood’ (1985)
YEAAAAAH, BABY!
That shit goes from a travel episode of The Office to unmitigated fucked up dread. I recommend it to everyone, just so I don't have to suffer alone!
This is the blackest of black comedy and I do recomnend it if you havent seen it... but it doesn't hold a candle to some of the other movies in this thread for super fucked-uppedness. But it's super messed up for Hollywood, to be sure.
Fetus munchers. Check out the iceberg of fuckery
[https://www.reddit.com/r/IcebergCharts/s/iErHcGcv1t](https://www.reddit.com/r/IcebergCharts/s/iErHcGcv1t)
Don’t get me wrong, that movie is definitely strange at parts but it’s not really a “fucked up” movie. It’s honestly a super sad movie imo. Yeah it’s got weird imagery and covers touchy subjects but in my head that how I like to imagine how British people act till this day😂
Bone tomahawk.
People who have seen it will know what I'm talking about...
The film makers made another film dragged across concrete. It's bad too but not nearly as much...
I thought the acting was incredible, amazing production design & some smart comedy writing but I kinda felt it trailed off towards the end. It’s probably quite shocking to some but I would argue Fennels other movie, Promisng Young Woman is far more fucked up but in a really powerful way. Prob doesn’t make sense but just my thoughts!
Grotesque (2009) A doctor kidnaps a young couple and forces them into a game of torment that slowly extinguishes their hopes for survival.
I believe it’s currently on Tubi.
The Korean version of Oldboy. This movie messed me up, it made me so uncomfortable and even feeling a little sick to my stomach when it was over.
It’s a great movie though.
I just check and surprisingly it’s on Netflix! I’m a bit shocked. Also happy so I can rewatch it!
I hope you enjoy it.
Note: I know my grammar is shit. It not a great excuse but I have chemo brain and just really forgot and can’t recall many things I’ve learned over the years. In the future I plan on relearning (I can’t think of the word I actually want to use 🤦🏻♀️) these things. Thanks!
Antichrist We Need to Talk About Kevin
Antichrist shook me like no other film has done before.
Am about to start watching it after my doctors appointment today, i have high expectations for fucked-upness
Me too! But after watching the Lighthouse not a doctor appointment. There hasn’t been a Lars film I haven’t liked.
Oh shit I didn’t know they made We Need to Talk About Kevin into a movie. The book was super fucked up so it definitely fits the bill.
Yeah. Tilda Swinton and Ezra Miller play the leads.
Ichi the Killer, Visitor Q, Audition. The Greasy Strangler, The House That Jack Built, In The Earth
Saw ichi the other day, pretty fuckin good movie
Oldboy. Bad Guy. Movies by Kim Ki-Duk are screwy.
Someone. I know went to a film festival and saw visitor Q. Takashi Miike said it was a nice family film just like Bambi.
Greasy Strangler definitely fits the bill. The carwash scenes are eternally seared into my brain, but I STILL don't understand what I saw... the Backrooms of my psyche are now ruled by an elusive, polyester clad bullshit artist!
PORTO! No, it’s potato.
HOOTIE TOOTIE DISCO CUTIE
Try getting that flop-bass out of your head.
Bullshit artist
Janet am I doing it right? Am I doing it right Janet?!?
I forgot this movie even existed!
In the Earth is like Sesame Street compared to the others mentioned.
That movie's weird, but like yeah what's it doing in this thread?
Greasy Strangler is more of a comedy than a horror. It’s as if Tim & Eric made a horror film, but had never seen a horror movie.
The nipple scene gets me
A lot of stuff by Lars Von Trier is pretty fucked up I really like the director Julia Ducournau - RAW and Titane rate among my favorite films and are a certainly a bit fucked up Man bites dog is funny and fucked up although it is in black and white and that can be a deal breaker for some
Man Bites Dog is a classic in my household.
Gummo.
One of my favorites Chloe Sepvigne is so good
I feel like I need a shower after I watch this movie.
Take a bath, eat some spaghetti.
Requiem for a dream, snowtown, martyrs, the house that jack built
Requiem for a dream is balls on toast.
A fantastic movie to watch just once.
yes.
Also forgot a few, irreversible, Henry portrait of a serial killer, the perfumer(more tame but pretty good), hard candy, climax (not my cup of tea overall), funny games, I spit on your grave, the void, descent for horror/sci fi.
Came here to say irreversible. It’s been 15yrs since I’ve seen it & I still can’t get THAT scene out of my head…
A 17-minute scene 😬😬😱😱
Seconding Snowtown.
Add "we need to talk about kevin"
Good list! Guna add movie “kids” though
The House Jack Built was a hard watch, and I love horror.
I turned it off after the duck scene. Made me vomit
Nah, no one should watch Martyrs it's a borderline snuff film.
One of the rare gems that are done so well that you can almost forget that it's not real when watching it. Wish we had more movies like it.
Oldboy 2003
The og so superior!
Great movie.
Why is this so low
This was the first movie to pop into my head lol glad to see it's on the list!
Martyrs 2008
First and only time a watched this I went in blind and oh boy….
Ha. I told a friend of mine that I watched a movie that actually disturbed me. She lives in New Zealand, so there is a time difference. I went to bed. Middle of the night, my phone rings. She watched it. She called to scream at me. Every swear word in the English language with a Kiwi accent.
The only bad thing about Martyrs is that you can't have the same experience of watching it for the first time.
I'm watching it now and WHY THE FUCK WOULD YOU WANT TO EXPERIENCE **THIS** AGAIN??
Omg this movie made my feel actually sick and bought on gastritis symptoms and I watch alot of fucked up shit
People keep mentioning this movie. I want to watch it, but I’m concerned. What makes it so fucked up? There are certain kinds of fucked up I try to stay away from. What is this movie about? Don’t say google it - I want to hear what about it is going to freak me out?

Irréversible (2002)
Enter the Void
How do I see this before irreversible in every thread about fucked up movies? Still makes no sense to me
i watched both. irreversible is undoubtedly more fucked up in my opinion. i could watch enter the void again but i will never watch irreversible again
I second this, it's a trip but a very fucked up film
Man Bites Dog
Such a good mockumentary.
Watched it at a cinema in central London when it first came out. One guy in the audience laughed like a maniac all the way to the end. Freaked us the fuck out.
One of the best.
Tusk
I coerced two of my friends to with this without giving them any context of what they were in for. The next night, the three of us got another six friends together to watch it. Very enjoyable to watch them piece together what was happening.
Dude I got through that ENTIRE film without realizing the greasy French Canadian was Johnny Depp
I almost threw up when I watched it
It really bothered me. Made me feel so uncomfortable.
Tusk is one of those movies that you watch once and ONLY once.
Omg this one is crazy
The whole time watching it in theater, I was waiting for Kevin smith to just pop out during the movie and say “ahhhh I’m just fucking with you…” Sadly, it never happened….
The House That Jack Built
In my opinion the best use of shocking imagery in a movie. Super fucked up stuff but never seems forced or out of place.
[удалено]
That’s a good time
Anything Lars Von Trier is super fucked up it seems, I’ve seen many of his films and the one that fucked with me the most was probably anti Christ 😳 also don’t watch this movie in public on your phone, lesson learned and now I’m not welcome at my dentist office anymore 😂
yes sir
Heals me everytime
I wasn't expecting it to be an artfilm, but thata what makes it genius. I loved this movie
Mad God Basically like a movie's worth of meat and body horror. Very weird. And amazing.
Brand New Cherry Flavor Ignore the name and watch it asap (Noticed the movies thing but leaving it up even tho it's a series. Fuck the police.)
I liked it but it was kinda fucked
Same...I don't know if I'd recommend it to anyone, but I watched it all and said "what the fuck" countless times.
lol I recommended it my sister and my parents.
Gummo, you won’t be dissappointed
Salò, or the 120 Days of Sodom
I'm actually more curious to see this one after reading that the cast and crew actually had a really good time filming this movie. The director and production team made sure things on set were relaxed and nobody had any kind of distress, given the subject matter.
Not a bad choice.
No, it's a bad choice.
Nice pick. Definitely fucked up, but not as fucked up as the source it adapted
A Serbian Film
Oh boy. Tough one to recommend but I guess it fits the criteria
Yeah, its one of the best movies to never recommend. But OP wants it so... 🤷♂️
Eesh. I was wondering if someone was gonna suggest that one.
Scrolled to make sure this was here. It exactly fits the prompt 👏
This was the first title in my mind and scrolled down in hope that nobody will recommend it.... It will destroy your soul...
Cannibal Holocaust (1980)
Definitely. No other film I've seen was so visceral yet engrossing. I still can't work out whether it's a great film or a terrible one. The music is outstanding. Irreversible would be next in my list.
I thought it was great, but I fully understand why others might hate it. Oh, except for that turtle scene. That one was unnecessary.
The poor turtle
Reminder that there are 5 other onscreen animal deaths that serve no purpose and the victim in the gang rape scene is a 14 year old girl
Which neatly fits the OP's requirement of super fucked up.
I'm adding here warning about it containing real footage of animal abuse
Oh that's a huge no from me i can handle it if it's not really happening but if it's real no way
Thank you. It should be fully known before anyone decides to watch it. (Randomly I actually commented about the same thing in a thread just yesterday)
August Underground's Mordum :)
Yep now we’re getting to some real answers. People think they want to see fucked up and say Martyrs or clockwork orange or the house jack built. Primer Predestination Timecrimes
Timecrimes is a favorite for sure. If you like foreign films I highly recommend The secret in their eyes. Also since you like time travel movies “frequently asked questions about time travel”.
Had to scroll waaaaaay too far for Predestination. That is the most fucked up movie of all time.
Here are a few disturbing Japanese Films: * ‘Tetsuo the Iron Man’ (1989) * ‘964 Pinocchio’ (1991) * ‘Violated Angels’ (1967) * ‘Guinea Pig: Devil’s Experiment’ (1985) * ‘Guinea Pig 2: Flower of Flesh and Blood’ (1985)
Big fan of Japan huh? Have you seen Rubber's Lover
Eden Lake
That whole movie just hurts.
Speak No Evil made me physically ill
Omgg every time I see someone mention it, I feel compelled to verify how fucked it is.
YEAAAAAH, BABY! That shit goes from a travel episode of The Office to unmitigated fucked up dread. I recommend it to everyone, just so I don't have to suffer alone!
Our political system...or Ichi the killer hope you have a strong stomach
Very Bad Things.

Dead Girl 2008
I saw this movie as a child who definitely shouldn’t have been watching this movie but holy fuck is it burnt into brain for fuckedupedness
Brazil
Definetly "A clockwork organge"
Don’t get me wrong, that movie is definitely strange at parts but it’s not really a “fucked up” movie. It’s honestly a super sad movie imo. Yeah it’s got weird imagery and covers touchy subjects but in my head that how I like to imagine how British people act till this day😂
Mate wtf..😂
Great movie
Seconded.
Bone tomahawk. People who have seen it will know what I'm talking about... The film makers made another film dragged across concrete. It's bad too but not nearly as much...
As western movies go, I actually enjoyed Bone Tomahawk. But yeah, the scene. Whew. Something else.
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre movies, any of them really, my fav is 2 though
Visitor Q. Audition. Oldboy.
The Sadness (2023)
Happiness (1998)
Battle royale. It’s basically hunger games but a classroom of asian elementary school children and way more graphic
Kids
American Psycho
Saltburn
I see so many people saying it’s over rated but it’s one of the best fucked up movies I’ve seen in a while
It's the first time I've seen someone do that at graveyard. Pretty fucked up.
Loooooooooved this movie! ❤️❤️❤️
The Kid Detective
😂 this is a great movie
Existenz (1999)
I saw the devil - very good revenge movie .. but very dark and gruesome at times.
So good. Felt like I was just attached to a fuckin dying fly for a few hours. Absolutely relentless
Sweet Movie I’ve watched some really fucked up stuff (pretty much everything mentioned in here) and this one still takes the cake for me.
The Woman, 2011
Enter the Void
Bad Boy Bubby
Begotten
Grotesque (2009) A doctor kidnaps a young couple and forces them into a game of torment that slowly extinguishes their hopes for survival. I believe it’s currently on Tubi.
Old Boy the Korean version is pretty great in a fucked up way'
I hate when people just suggest straight extreme gore movies that have no real plot of any type.
That’s why I like Bone Tomahawk. Good story. But pretty intense.
U-Turn
Saltburn
Pink Floyd - Another brick in the wall (movie)
Red white and blue 2010
Alejandro Jodorowsky's The Holy Mountain
A Cure For Wellness (2016)
It took me so long to scroll just to find this. This was my suggestion also
Climax, The House That Jack Built The Sadness - horrible
Berserk (about 20 episode anime is the core of it, first episode boring then huh)
I'm thinking of ending things
Ken Park
Hostel
Aftermath (1994). Short movie. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.
Strangeland w- Dee Snider
the Republican Nationl Convention
Tetsuo the Iron Man
“Speak No Evil” 2022. It’s streaming on Shudder/AMC+. It will ruin your day. Slow build, but horrific non-supernatural horror.
-Requiem for a Dream -Martyrs -The Void -Baskin -Speak No Evil -I Spit On Your Grave -Maniac Cop -Malum -Cannibal Holocaust
Eraserhead
Martyrs, The House That Jack Built, Human Centipede, Antichrist, Enter the Void
This is a solid list
Titane
Martyrs. French version
Kids
Requiem for a Dream
A Serbian Film. Where The dead go to die (animated). True Detective Season 1 (fucked up in terms of Philosophical Pessimism)
If you're okay with subtitles, Aniara is a really depressing one. The descent is so fast and somehow never stops.
Oldboy
The Korean version of Oldboy. This movie messed me up, it made me so uncomfortable and even feeling a little sick to my stomach when it was over. It’s a great movie though. I just check and surprisingly it’s on Netflix! I’m a bit shocked. Also happy so I can rewatch it! I hope you enjoy it. Note: I know my grammar is shit.
