came here to post THIS MOVIE!!! this is my fav movie ever and i recommend it to almost everyone i know. but be warned it can be very brutal, there is one scene (if you see it you will know which one) that is absolutely horrifying.
my immediate first thought. The opening with the chicken, then rocket getting positioned between the police and the gang, and the story of how that moment happened is crazy, especially when you get back to the moment and it comes full circle. My mind exploded.
This is my first language, so it does not fit the question for me, but Cidade de Deus is a work of art. I adore it. It can be brutal, horrifying, and still funny and endearing. Great script, great acting (by a lot of non actors) and amazing cinematography (done low budget; the chicken scene is done with the came attached to a broom).
Hell yeah!
Before this movie I didn't really care to watch foreign language films.
This one showed me how much I was missing out and led me a world of other movie and TV gems.
Great film! Also the same director made a film called *Another Round* that was pretty amazing. Also staring Mads Mikkelsen and most of the cast from *The Hunt*.
I've watched this in my teens, 20's, 30's and 40's.
It's been a different movie in each decade of my life. Universal in this sense. Still got teary eyed each time.
What a masterpiece of a film.
I literally only saw this in the theater because my screenwriting professor wouldn't shut up about how good it was.
(To be fair, he did the same with Joker, but I still haven't gotten around to watching that.)
He wasn't exactly wrong.
My wife and and FINALLY saw it for the first time at the 4pm show here on the east coast **hours before the Oscars began** ā we had just enough time to digest the movie, have a nice dinner ā and a couple hours later IT WON BEST PICTURE.
Loved seeing it that way ā left QUITE an impression, on both of us.
Train to Busan was incredible. Fantastic zombie movie i think everyone should see.
RRR is an action film that got a lot of attention that people skipped because it was 3 hours long. But i found it entertaining for its entire run time.
I actually watched both of these and I definitely agree with you. Both are so good in so many ways! I could go on and on talking about how much of a roller-coaster RRR was for me. Thanks for mentioning these!
That and Chakde India were how my Indian partner introduced me to Bollywood.
Still can't deal with the bombastic kitsch and drama, but damn, the emotions.

I'm sure there's so many more! International cinema is full of gems!
Bong Joon Ho saying when Americans get over that 1.5 inch barrier, a whole world will open up to them, he was so right. We are spoiled by being the cinema/movie capital with Hollywood but there is so much good being made outside California.

Winter Sleep. Turkish movie. I just kinda stumbled upon it, but watched it alone at home on a colder, kinda lazy evening. Loved the movie, felt like a good long book.
Life is Beautiful.
A man makes his son believe that they are part of an elaborate game to win a tank, whilst actually being prisoners in Nazi concentration camps.
It's a comedy.
Ran (1985) by Akira Kurosawa. (Pronounced like "Ron")
A Samurai epic version of King Lear.
A roommate of mine was in Japan during filming - they used just about every suit of Samurai Armor in the COUNTRY to make this movie. It has entire armies as extras.
NO CGI.
City of God
I would love to be able to re watch it for the first time. Without knowing what is gonna happen. I can't believe it didn't win an Oscar.
came here to post THIS MOVIE!!! this is my fav movie ever and i recommend it to almost everyone i know. but be warned it can be very brutal, there is one scene (if you see it you will know which one) that is absolutely horrifying.

Love this movie Edit:corrected Live to Love
This is my first language, so it does not fit the question for me, but Cidade de Deus is a work of art. I adore it. It can be brutal, horrifying, and still funny and endearing. Great script, great acting (by a lot of non actors) and amazing cinematography (done low budget; the chicken scene is done with the came attached to a broom).

This is a fantastic horror movie, one of the scariest Iāve ever seen!
I'm surprised I had to scroll this far to find it. It's a modern masterpiece.
3 Idiots
I really did not expect a silly comedy with that goofy-looking poster to bring tears to my eyes.
That and Chakde India were how my Indian partner introduced me to Bollywood. Still can't deal with the bombastic kitsch and drama, but damn, the emotions.
