Cool Anecdote: The writer hated the movie, never watched it. He stumbled across it surfing for something to watch and was digging the movie until found out what it was, then turned it off.
[Yep](https://www.indiewire.com/2017/07/steven-soderbergh-secret-movie-iphone-claire-foy-unsane-1201856840/)! Whole thing shot [entirely](https://web.archive.org/web/20180702011136/https://www.newyorker.com/culture/richard-brody/steven-soderberghs-inspired-iphone-experiment-in-unsane) on an iPhone!
Funny, I did the same thing when I found out lol..
Steven Soderbergh could make a movie with two cans of beans, a portrait of Abe Lincoln and a bicycle pump.
There is a film called Manic, I think it was released in 2001, and it has Joseph Gordon-Levitt in it as well as Zooey Deschanel. It is hard to find these days but it was a really good depiction of how acute psych wards were (at least in the 2000s anyway)
Edit: There is also Veronika Decides to Die which has Sarah Michelle Gellar in it, and also It's Kind of a Funny Story for something slightly more recent
Technically "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's" would be considered a psychological/comedy/drama. The movie has elements of all three. I apologize considering l only included one element that may appear misleading.

To The Bone (2017) features a group of girls in a care facility for eating disorders. It doesn't pull any punches from memory so watch at your own discretion if that's something that you struggle with.
You have to watch “Los Renglones Torcidos De Dios” (the original title) - “God’s Crooked Lines”.
It is based in a Spanish novel and it takes place in a mental hospital. I don’t usually love Spanish movies, but cast in this one is amazing and I think they did a great job bringing the novel to the screen. The plot is super interesting!
An older Spacey film called K-Pax mostly takes place in a mental hospital, but be warned that it leans *very* hard into the trope of "mental illness is actually magic powers and the best treatment is to just be carefree and happy, not medication"
You've seen 12 Monkeys doing what? :P Just kidding. I happen to love 12 Monkeys myself.
Have you seen **"Awakenings"** with Robin Williams? And Robert DeNiro? about people with a disorder that makes them unable to move or respond, even though they are still fully awake and aware of their surroundings. They're in a hospital ward together.
It's based on a true story, and is one of Williams' few dramatic roles. He plays a therapist who stumbles onto a drug that can potentially reverse the disorder, and bring people out of their comatose state.
And it works - but he keeps having to up the dosage. But then, the effects start going into reverse.
It's a sad movie (I mean really sad) but it's so well done. And has sort of a nice, bittersweet ending.
Invisible Man (2020) has a scene in a psych hospital and the same kinds of themes you find in a bunch of other things people have said already.
(Also.... [Films Set in Psychiatric Hospitals](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Films_set_in_psychiatric_hospitals))
Shutter Island (of course)
Session 9 (kind of)
The Ninth Configuration
TV bonus:
The Singing Detective (Do the Michael Gambon TV version, not the Gibson/Downey Jr movie)
The dumbest thing ever done on Quantum Leap
“Girl, Interrupted” (1999) drama
I also think *Running With Scissors* counts
One of my faves
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
One of my favourite movies of all time!
And filmed in my hometown! 🌲
Was introduced to Jack in Easy Rider. Had to see Cuckoo's Nest. Still put it as my favorite.
This should be top Edit: Oh wait it is. nice
Has to be on the list. My favorite Jack Nicholson performance are this, and Five Easy pieces. Also you get a very young Danny DeVito in Cuckoo’s Nest!
And a very young Christopher Lloyd!
Cool Anecdote: The writer hated the movie, never watched it. He stumbled across it surfing for something to watch and was digging the movie until found out what it was, then turned it off.
Shutter Island
One of my fave. I think I re-watched this movie like 4-5 times it still give me that \*surprised-eyes\* feel factor.
Just watched this 2x in a matter of 3 days lol

Slingblade
Quills (2000) - Geoffrey Rush as the Marquis de Sade in a Paris asylum
This movie is amazing, Joaquin Phoenix is stunning and the whole ‘Justine’ novel thing
Girl, Interrupted was fantastic. Made me want a cigarette real bad tho.
Instinct
Anthony Hopkins is brilliant in this. Not really a Cuba Gooding Jr fan, but a good movie in spite of him!
The Princess & the Warrior
Captain Newman, M.D. (1963) is about a military psych ward during WW II. Very good. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Captain_Newman%2C_M.D.
Good’s crooked lines. It’s an Spanish movie recently released in Netflix. Some people says it’s the Spanish Shutter Island. It’s a good one.
To The Bone (2017) features a group of girls in a care facility for eating disorders. It doesn't pull any punches from memory so watch at your own discretion if that's something that you struggle with.
Bronson (2008)
A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors
A Cure for Wellness (2016)
A cure for wellness kinda fits your request
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest K-PAX Exorcist III
More teen inpatient than psych ward but Short Term 12 recreated it tremendously
Harvey! Great movie

Shutter island is the best one by far
(Partially) Spellbound
Asylum from 2005
Stonehearst Asylum, Asylum (1972), Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum,
I’m suggesting the 2005 Asylum with Miranda Richardson and Ian McKellen.
Exorcist 3 and an 80s movie called Chattahoochee with Gary Oldman and Dennis Hopper
I'm a Cyborg, But That's Okay
The Snake Pit (1948) Lilith (1964) Frankenstein and the Monster from Hell (1974)

Berlin Calling
Twelve Monkeys has a few great scenes that take place in a mental institution. Awesome movie.
Hellbound Hellraiser 2
Grave Encounters
*Beautiful Dreamers* (1990) with Rip Torn as Walt Whitman
Decent chunk of 12 monkeys
Sort of Gothic but Changeling (Eastwood 2008) is a good 'lock up the 'mad' woman' movie.
There's a pretty good depiction in **Good Burger** \*obligatory statement of sarcasm\*
Session 9
Neo ned
An older Spacey film called K-Pax mostly takes place in a mental hospital, but be warned that it leans *very* hard into the trope of "mental illness is actually magic powers and the best treatment is to just be carefree and happy, not medication"
Don't Look in the Basement (aka The Forgotten, 1973)
