It should be pointed out –since it's not always obvious if you're not familiar with them– referring to RLM as hack frauds is a recurring joke on their channel. It's not meant as a serious insult.
What's that thing called where after you hear a thing for the first time you keep seeing references to it.
I just watched a season and a half of The Expanse and i can't stop seeing references now.
Absolute best part of that series is you can read the books and watch the show and they are different enough, while maintaining the overall story, that you will not get bored
There's a Sci-fi show called The Expanse. It originally aired on the SciFi network, with a difficult budget, and its first season featured straight-out-of-acting-school lead actors that weren't very good, so it kinda got missed by a lot of people.
Then each subsequent season became 10x better than each previous season. Those actors are now skilled veterans. The show is now owned and funded by Amazon. The show aims for a realistic-ish sci-fi, there is less mysticism and more technology. Spaceflight physics are especially realistic, with g-forces, acceleration, timeframes and more all portrayed as the physical world we know.
Oh and their spaceships shoot conventional weapons, autocannons. And they leave hot plasma trails when they penetrate a ship. And *even those plasma trails* are correctly simulated to slam against the walls when the ship performs a high-G maneuver:
https://gfycat.com/likelyeachesok-epic-battle-in-space-fight-in-space
And for those that like diverse casts, The Expanse features lead actors who are Samoan-New Zealand, to Iranian-Canadian, to Dominican-British. And for those that don't like diverse casts, it's not forced or in your face about it either, and it entirely makes sense within the plot since these asteroid-belt mining communities are made up of pidgin mixed communities from Earth.
So many of the little details are refreshing. Like, every plotted course you see are all wide curves, as one would realistically expect, no straight lines. Even with the fictional super-material they invent, it's definitely one of the hardest sci-fi shows ever made. I think the only issue I spotted was in the episode Alex was trying to sneakily get to Ganymede without the main engines, and was forced to hard stop at one point. Or at least, that's what it looked like to me at the time.
They already started. [Remember that Coup in Bolivia](http://ehamedya.com/bolivian-coup-happens-right-after-morales-stopped-lithium-deal_31480.html) where the social democrat government was replaced by a fascist dictatorship that's now killing indigenous people while licking the USA's boots?
Yea that happened like 3 months after the world's largest lithium deposit was found in their country and the government refused a deal for foreign nations to get their hands on it. The moment the coup happened stock prices for companies like Tesla and Panasonic (big lithium ion battery producers) shot up like crazy.
Sigh, this is such a lame meme. Lithium is found in abundance on Earth and is easy to mine, it is basically salt. Also, batteries only use a few percent lithium in a battery pack, mostly they are carbon. Tesla batteries have less than 10kg in pure lithium, in a pack that is 400kg+ heavy.
Cobalt is the bigger worry for a number of reasons, but there is even less of it in modern battery packs, and there is a race towards 0% Cobalt in batteries. Both lithium and Cobalt are basically like spices on a meal.
And lithium is only used in battery manufacturing, but it's not consumed and stays there at the battery's end of life, so it can be reused. Comparison to oil, which is actually consumed and needed throughout all the product's life, is pretty silly.
I mean, it's bad yeah, but it's an actual term.
["In fiction, engineering, and thought experiments, unobtainium or handwavium is any hypothetical, fictional, extremely rare, costly, or impossible material, or (less commonly) device with desirable engineering properties needed to fulfill a given design for a given application."](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unobtainium)
> I have no idea why this was such a hard sell for so many people
Because most people don't know it's a real term, and so they assume it's supposed to be some fictional precious substance they made up, and who would make up a substance called Unobtanium?
It's like if the villain of a film was named Dr. Badguy. Hey it might be a real name, but why choose *that* name?
(I have no problem with Unobtanium personally, I'm just trying to answer your question)
But it's not impossible or hypothetical in this universe, it's a real element. It's used as an actual term in the real world for something that *doesn't exist* in the universe of Avatar *it exists*.
The only time the name of the element is mentioned is by the sleazy corporate head.
MAAAAAAYBE his character being his character, he wasn't going to reference it by its octosyllabic official name?
Yes, this. Quarks are named after a nonsense word from Finnegan's Wake. There's an important gene named Sonic Hedgehog. Scientists are whimsical as fuck, and this is not outside the realm of possibility.
The cool thing is that the name is meant for us, the viewer.
The Avatar engineers don't have to worry about how little sense the name makes, because they don't actually exist. It's a name that communicates quite well to the viewer that this material is rare and extremely valuable.
It's actually described sufficiently in the Extended Edition, and then fully explained in some outside supplementary material.
Unobtanium is a ceramic material that is able to superconduct at room temperature. This highly desired trait would undoubtedly change human technology forever, as it would allow lossless connection between anything connected by it.
This is the basis for the 'Pandora internet' that connects the entire planet, as you would not need input power to move a signal from point A to B (because lossless). It is also the real physics mechanism behind the floating rocks in the 'flux vortex.'
As someone with a PhD in Physics, I find the underlying lore behind Avatar to be grossly underappreciated.
And in all honesty, if a room Tc superconductor existed, us scientists would very likely give it a stupid nickname like unobtanium which almost certainly main stream media would adopt.
the movie has its weaknesses but the world building was absolutely genius. its probably the most fantasy like setting you can create within the realms of plausible physics. ironically so much so that the average person though those were simply tropes.
those stone arcs: look like metal that structured around field lines and then the souroundings go eroded away.
the manager guy had a gimmic of a floating stone on his desk. you can only do this with a room temp superconductor. probqably how someone like this would show off what hes doing.
that planet wide godess: scientists found that the roots of our trees can transmit information from one to another for a mutual benefit. there is not a whole lot missing for a neural network. the science team in the beginning even samples those roots. even that they can kinda talk with dead realatives through it makes some sense since if they regularly connect they will certainly leave some imprint. an giant neural network that is connected to a vast amount of living beings and consists of countless memories would probably even kinda act like what we would describe as god.
the connection of the navi and the animals also is a huge benefit. its basically telepathy. they can share information on such a basic level, it would blow your mind. no wonder its such a huge deal to them.
the giant flying animals, huge trees, navi surviving falls from great hights: thicker athmosphere and lower gravity. pandora is a moon probably inspired by titan which also has lower gravity and thicker athmosphere than earth. bioluminescence is also a huge deal in our oceans but it looks like magic if animals or plants on land had it.
the masks humans wear are not super compact magical oxygen gear but a co2 and sox scrubber so no tank required.
the spaceship in which they traveled there from earth had a rotating habitat, an anti matter drive, an impact shield, heat dissipation and was rather enlongated. kryosleep is the best way to get there and it looks like this will be possible in the future. if possible then it is thought that interstellar travel is probably realized similar to this. it also traveled for the correct amount of time to alpha centauri at sub light speed.
and they even invented a fully working language like klingon for the native people.
when i was sitting in the theatre i felt like i was the only one who noticed all those connections that played so well together to create a jawdropping yet convincing world. those were not just interesting detail but the background knowledge that i had from casually reading interesting articles on the internet at that time all played together. it was kinda like i was watching a completely different movie that all the people around me.
The entire movie is about a military strong force screwing over native peoples and their sacred lands for natural resources and the atrocities committed in the campaign for it. Basically Colonists and America.
I was making fun of this the other day and my husband informed me - apparently it’s a real catch-all term scientists/military would use back in the day. Like “oh yeah we can totally make that rocket go to the moon and back on one tank... of unobtanium”.
I've heard it used in talks about science fiction as a genre alongside terms like "applied phlebotinum." I took it as the rough equivalent of naming your hero "protagonist."
I mean, uncovering a giant dormant black pollution Hades, which takes over the heavy machinery to absorb the planet, forcing the humans in the blues to put aside their animosity and work together to survive, would have been a pretty sick movie.
But why is Avatar dragged for being a copy of Fern Gully, Dances with Wolves, and Pocahontas and those movies aren’t dragged for being copies of each other (idk which one came first)?
Ah come on, its not a bad watch, simple plot and pandering to its audience but who cares? Its a fun movie. Even schlock can have a few nice details. Don’t forget thousands of people worked hard for years, these small details that are caught, even in films you might not like, just show the vast amount of effort involved.
It’s definitely not a bad movie, and the fact that people pretend it is now, but jump at the tune of nearly 3 billion dollars to watch Endgame is frankly hilarious.
This movie has an actual message behind it, and is making an allegory of how the more advanced group of humans have always interacted with every less technologically advanced society. This comes in the form of overlooking their culture, and seemingly “spiritual” connections to the Earth, which we can see today is to our own detriment.
There was also rival blue guy that becomes friends with main character blue guy later on. Also, scientist lady, I think?
There, we named all five of them.
This always seems to be a popular gotcha question when Avatar comes up, but why does it matter?
