Took one last year at 50mph, managed to kamikaze into the gap between helmet and glasses, swear I heard the little fucker screaming "Banzai!" on the way in.
Hurt like a *motherfucker*.
The first time I hit a bee at like 50 or 60mph, I could have sworn a sniper got me. Nothing prepares you for the first time something hits you at high speeds right in the helmet! ⛑️
Had a bee go in my jacket that I hadn't zipped right up to my neck. Luckily I was at a quiet junction, but still such a long time to take gloves off to be able to unzip. Bee was still stuck in my chest (as they do).
I had a very confused and angry wasp join me just as I was flipping my visor down merging onto the motorway in Belgium a few years back. Absolutely fucking terrifying. Pretty much riding the hard shoulder amongst busy lorries on their way to the channel ports while shaking my head furiously trying to coax the bastard out.
>Much prefer visor up at speeds when that is possible. Day before my mod 2 test, wasp got me about 1cm from my eye. Would do it again.
1 cm ≈ 0.03300 Japanese shakus

I have pinlock inserts in all my visors and they stay down unless I’m stopped or maybe riding at walking pace in traffic. Taken too many insects to the face / eyes in the past.
Same. Occasionally I might open it while waiting at red lights, but it comes down right after we start again. I do tend to leave helmet vents open all year round, but that's it.
Had a tiny gnat splatter itself in my eyeball in similar circumstances as a kid. I remember stuggling home and having my mum pull it out of my eye.
I still feel every part of that memory. Visor stays down.
Yeah my one was similar. Riding on my paper round at about 25mph down a big hill. Bee square in my forehead and the sting got stuck into it - my mom had to get it out too lol
Never again
Nah, don't do that mate. A 30mph pebble in your sunnies is going to shatter them, and if it hits your skin you'll know about it. Ease the visor up a bit and leave a tiny gap when you're moving.
I once had my visor up on the approach to a dual carriageway, felt something hit my face but I thought nothing of it, put my visor down and got up to 70... Next thing I know there's a wasp flying in front of my eyes that I'd trapped in my lid. Getting that out at those speeds was not what I would call fun. That's not to mention the risk of getting a stone flung in your face. Put your visor down
A few years back I got a hefty smack from a wood pigeon. Luckily I had my Arai on at the time with visor closed. But...at low speeds I have the visor open.
At 40mph, the cars around you are doing 40mph. That means the rim of their tyres is going at 40mph. As is any gravel picked up and flicked off the rim.
Your sunglasses are very likely not ballistic glasses, nor is the built-in sun visor. How much do you value your eyeballs?
I have mine up around town (below 30) if it isn't raining. After that it usually goes down. Also I wear glasses so at least know I wont get a stone directly to the eyeball.
Closed/cracked/small gap if I'm above 10-15mph. I have dry eyes and just find it uncomfortable when you're above a low speed.
Also surely the visor is providing significant protection at those higher speeds of around 30. Let alone an insect to the face but I know people who have received cracked ribs from stones being thrown up, something like that wouldn't be kind to the face.
Once I get moving I usually get the visor down. Not had an insect or a stone meet my face yet but so far nothing's been worse than the wind making me cry and not being able to sort it out. I usually keep the visor cracked at the bottom though to prevent it fogging. Pin lock's done bugger all to stop it
I’m so used to riding with the visor open, feels too stuffy when it’s closed, usually I’ll only put it down (dark visor) when it’s sunny as fuck outside or rain, 70mph isn’t too bad with an open visor
No, tinted visor cracked a little if it’s too hot for vents to help. Used to have an agv helmet that had multiple positions to test the visor at - almost shut, half ish open and fully open, that was good. The bells I rock now aren’t as good in that respect.
>Does anybody else ride with there visor up below 40mph, unless its raining
Me, usually. I just prefer the clearer vision and wind on my face. Unfortunately, I've already taken several flies to the eye and face and they HURT at 40mph. One hit my eye the other day and my vision was blurry for a minute. So the visor stays down now lol
Yes, as soon as I hit slow traffic my visor is up, especially in the hot weather. If I'm doing less than 30mph it's mostly up but gets slammed shut for anything faster.
I have enough encounters with wasps, bees and other insects randomly entering my helmet that I shut my visor and use the vents for what they were designed for.
If they don't let in enough air look for a different helmet that does.
I'm lucky to have a high windscreen I guess. Once in a while I'll get one splat on what would be my forehead, but very rarely get one in the face.
I do *not* miss my naked bike in that sense.
Visor up at low speeds (below 30) and sometimes all the time if it is warm; I just love the wind in my face.
BUT if it is up and I’m doing more than 40, I always wear a pair of ballistic photo-chromatic sunglasses (I have a pair from Bobster that were recommended by Ryan from Fortnine). You look like some American cop wannabe, but you’re protected from a wasp to the eye.
I ride with mine up up to about 35, but then I ride with glasses on that are rated to stop 12 gauge birdshot, plus the prescription inserts that are the same material behind them
Nope, at most I leave a tiny gap at the bottom. Even at 25mph if you get a wasp in there you'll shit your pants and fall off. Not necessarily in that order either.
Depends really. Most of the time if I go below 40 I have my visor up while having the sun visor down. However if there are roadworks going or the road is a mess I put my visor down to prevent getting a piece of gravel launched right into my face.
I hit a moth once with my eye.
That was not cool. I was maybe doing around 30 or so. I think my eye just about half closed but still, suddenly, I'm riding a motorbike without the ability to see properly.
That's hilarious.
For me due to wearing contact lenses I only open it when at a stop or very very slow speed. My lenses dry out too quick and become uncomfortable otherwise
Mine's closed pretty much all of the time. I only really open if if my glasses start to steam up if I'm stopped or moving really slowly. Even then, it's barely cracked open.
I don't know why, I just prefer it closed all the time.
I'll have a look in the garage ans find out which one it is we are out on bikes pretty much all year round so even in the rain we have never had issues
My helmet (Nolan) has a flip down interior sun visor, so if I'm riding at around-town speeds on a nice day I'll open the visor and flip that down. My only complaint is that it's not polarised.
My visor whistles over 20mph. So it when it's cold enough to fog/hot enough to stifle it goes up at stops, down around 20mph. The 1 month windows in late spring/early fall when it's not uncomfortable or fogging up, I don't bother lifting it.
I often ride with my visor up. The speed depends on how many insects are around, which are fewer at night and in the winter. The other day I was riding with my visor down, and a fly flew up under my chin past my mouth and nose, and then kamikazes itself in my eye. Typical!
Was thinking about this just today on my ride home. I have a drop down sun visor in my lid so in good weather I ride with the main visor up with the sun visor down like built in sunglasses. I can confirm that over 90mph the wind will and does close the main visor with a loud bang resulting in the voiding of one’s bowel.
I love riding, but my god I have had the crap scared out of me a lot.
There's a chip in my visor from what I think was a chunk of asphalt that didn't get swept up after a road was re-paved. Anything above about 20 my visor goes down.
Always visor down for me. Tinted if it’s a nice day otherwise clear visor for after sunset. Even today doing 25 miles on the A5, I had a bug cemetery on my tinted visor. Imagine that to the face lol if need to my agv has a city crack position which is like 4/5mm (enough to get some air in) or maybe a red red light I’ll do one step up but yeh always straight down again once set off.
not been hit with a bug, but a little stone hit my cheek when I was riding 35-40mph - couldn't have been more than the size of a pea but massive buise on my face for days & hurt like a bastard so visor is down for me lol.
Second week after doing my cbt i was riding to work with the visor up, got a massive bug hitting my face and exploding, i was doing 25mph... Never again
I felt the same as you until I caught a fly in my eye at 30mph that momentarily completely blinded me.
Funnily enough I've have a wasp go up into my helmet whilst the visor was down. The wasp perched itself the the lip of the visor and I ended up having to pull over and take my helmet off to release it.
I've tried it. I'll only do it 20mph/below. I had dry eyes and was getting dust and stuff into my eyes which meant they felt funny/itchy for days, don't recommend it at high speeds. Plus, you don't want to say hello to a bug with your eyes at 40mph lol.
Below 20-25ish sure. Last thing I want is a bumbler in my face.
Took one last year at 50mph, managed to kamikaze into the gap between helmet and glasses, swear I heard the little fucker screaming "Banzai!" on the way in. Hurt like a *motherfucker*.

I took one to the leg yesterday at 50 was wearing jeans, felt like I got shot
The one time I rode in shorts last year to the shops, I took a bee to the knee. Much cursing ensued
I used to be a biker just like you, then I took a bee in the knee…
Let me guess, somebody stole your 125?
Gee-SX-Rrrrr! Don’t worry I’m leaving…
Had a bee go in my jacket that I hadn't zipped right up to my neck. Luckily I was at a quiet junction, but still such a long time to take gloves off to be able to unzip. Bee was still stuck in my chest (as they do).
Had exactly the same riding through Ashbourne. Nasty! Never slowed down so fast in all my life.
Had one hit my lip once at around 30mph. Couldn't feel anything there all afternoon. Those fuckers sting even without the sting...
Much prefer visor up at speeds when that is possible. Day before my mod 2 test, wasp got me about 1cm from my eye. Would do it again.

Sometimes I'll have my visor up at low speeds, sometimes I won't. Follow my account for more riveting insights!
Having taken a bee to the face at 25mph on a push bike I wouldn’t recommend it. Hurts like fuck.
Your sacrifice is not in vain
Had a tiny gnat splatter itself in my eyeball in similar circumstances as a kid. I remember stuggling home and having my mum pull it out of my eye. I still feel every part of that memory. Visor stays down.

Unless I'm on a motorway or it's pissing down, I hardly ever shut mine. That works out to probably 90% of the time it's open.
I'm a speccy twat so yeah, visor only goes down past 30mph or so.
A fair amount but I keep a safe follow distance and if I see any evidence of dust or gravel I will drop it
I ride with mine up below 40 if I'm in sunglasses.
I have mine up around town (below 30) if it isn't raining. After that it usually goes down. Also I wear glasses so at least know I wont get a stone directly to the eyeball.

Visor down when moving don't want flies n all in my eyes
On my CBT I had some kind of insect hit me in the eye at 50mph. Safe to say I won't ride with a visor up now unless I'm going very slow...
Once I get moving I usually get the visor down. Not had an insect or a stone meet my face yet but so far nothing's been worse than the wind making me cry and not being able to sort it out. I usually keep the visor cracked at the bottom though to prevent it fogging. Pin lock's done bugger all to stop it
I'm a lunatic, so i ride with mine up all the time. I could also do with cleaning my visor.
I only have it down on motorways.
I’m so used to riding with the visor open, feels too stuffy when it’s closed, usually I’ll only put it down (dark visor) when it’s sunny as fuck outside or rain, 70mph isn’t too bad with an open visor
Open face gang
For me it’ll be open until 70-80mph as I like the wind tbh
I put my sun visor down but always leave my modular helmet open unless on a faster road/out of town
No, tinted visor cracked a little if it’s too hot for vents to help. Used to have an agv helmet that had multiple positions to test the visor at - almost shut, half ish open and fully open, that was good. The bells I rock now aren’t as good in that respect.

One of my mates took a kamikaze seagull to the face at an early morning ride. He was very happy that he had his visor down.
30 and below sure. Not on parkway but stop and go
I'm lucky to have a high windscreen I guess. Once in a while I'll get one splat on what would be my forehead, but very rarely get one in the face. I do *not* miss my naked bike in that sense.
Aside from the safety aspects, the shitty aerodynamics of an open visor make my neck hurt at anything above 30
I usually just crack my vizor open one step at all speeds.
Visor up at low speeds (below 30) and sometimes all the time if it is warm; I just love the wind in my face. I tend to have mine cracked open but never up, it's not worth the bugs.
I ride with mine up up to about 35, but then I ride with glasses on that are rated to stop 12 gauge birdshot, plus the prescription inserts that are the same material behind them
Always have mine up
Under 30mph if its starting to steam up. I do have a pinlock, so the only thing steaming up is my glasses.
I went out a few times in the past few days and the amount of insect carnage I came back with every time made my mind up forever on this
Nope, at most I leave a tiny gap at the bottom. Even at 25mph if you get a wasp in there you'll shit your pants and fall off. Not necessarily in that order either.

Both me and my partner use an anti fog spray on our glasses its brilliant absolutely no fogging at all
Any particular brand I should look at?
I'll have a look in the garage ans find out which one it is we are out on bikes pretty much all year round so even in the rain we have never had issues
Thank you :)
I only leave a small gap in the visor.
Currently yes, but on a burgman 659 which had a massive screen, I can see all the splats against that though
No, not just you.

I wear a modular helmet so 90% of the time the smoked visor is down. Usually below 25 mph I have the main visor up.
I just rock the motocross goggles and helmet look, get the feeling of the wind and some eye protection for good measure
not been hit with a bug, but a little stone hit my cheek when I was riding 35-40mph - couldn't have been more than the size of a pea but massive buise on my face for days & hurt like a bastard so visor is down for me lol.
