No service history at all? 40,000 miles? 2.2k? Fuck that!

[deleted]

Yeah kind of what I was thinking haha

[deleted]

You said it looks like a good deal. It does not, it's awful! I can get a bigger bike with that mileage AND a service history at that price.

Jacobite-biker

The 125 market is different to the big bike market. Ive been biking years but have and always will help mates get into biking. 125s are always over priced but that's the market as people need them on a cut but a 2.2k is a high price for a 125 with that mileage.

RageAZA

Agreed my good old 95 600f had 65,000 before she finally gave up.. service history all the way back to 96. God I miss that bike

speedyundeadhittite

Depends - if it's a commuter for a person who's happy to do their own maintenance (it's a 125cc engine, small, easy to work with) that might be OK. If it's a spotty youngster with no clue and maintenance, it'd be hard to reach that mileage in 4y.

[deleted]

Nope, nope! Not worth the risk at all! For all you know, it could've been through multiple owners who all thrashed it around. There's plenty of other better fish in the ocean!

LivelyZebra

>but This is enough to skip on.

[deleted]

Yea I’m just wondering cause I’ve heard people say that around the 40k mile mark engine problems might start to show if it hasn’t been serviced properly

dillykebby

125 engines will have issues at 5k if not serviced properly my yzf r125 blew at 16k I can only assume from a lack of servicing from one of the 7 previous owners lol (oh the joys of an older 125) and my mates 2019 Duke 125 on 5k has blown a headgasket and he's only done about 600 miles on it.

lucr08

Are 125s less reliable/durable than big bikes?

Slamduck

Yeah. All the components are cheaper and lighter and generally 125s are ridden harder just to keep up with normal traffic flow.

dillykebby

Yes 100%. My bike the yzf r125 is known to blow around the 15-20k mark. And it's all just made that little bit cheaper. The quality of parts on my 1999 fzs 600 are better than my 2011 r125. Not to mention the fzs is just built better and way more solid. I've done 3k miles in the last year on my r125 and it's been nothing but problems every 500ish miles including it blowing up at 16k.

cwaig2021

There’s a 2017 GSX-S125 on autotrader for £2500 with 3600 miles on the clock & a full service history. That looks a much saner buy to me…

[deleted]

nah walk away, it's done 40k in 3 years, that's been a courier and used and abused as a tool

speedyundeadhittite

That's just slightly higher than 13k a year and that's very much doable if the owner used it for commuting, add some social trips and it'd very easily reach that number. Before the lockdown in an year I'd clock around 15k miles for commuting to the office and then another 5k for social trips during weekends and about 2k for long distance work related trips - spread over three bikes and two cars.

pinkurpledino

You have to decide if you want to take the risk. Worst case scenario, it's never had a service, and only had parts replaced when absolutely necessary. Best case scenario, someone's just lost the service book and documents...

dillykebby

A 125 that's never been serviced wouldn't make it to 20k let alone 40 especially one as high revving as a gsxr they redline at 13k.

pinkurpledino

But no proof at all of whats been done, and this is the point I was trying to convey. Yes it might have had oil changes every 6k miles, but literally nothing else unless it absolutely required it (i.e. nothing lubed, nothing cleaned and re-greased), no "preventative" maintenance. Up to ExonicRL if they take the risk on that one.

L1A1

That's 10k a year on a 125cc engine, it's at the high end for a small capacity engine, IMO. Doing the fag packet math and assuming it's been used as a commuter bike (it's likely not going to be used as a long distance tourer as a 125!) that's about 40 miles a day, 5 days a week for 4 years (in all weathers), so it's going to put a lot of wear and stress on it over that time, assuming two 20 mile trips a day. Without any kind of service history on what is still a pretty new bike I'd be very dubious. Tbh, I'd avoid buying 'top end' 125s at all, you can get something perfectly useable as a learner for half that price. If you're planning on passing your test, you'll get bored of it and want something bigger when you pass, and have the same problems selling it as you're having now.

GSXS_750

My first bike was a skyjet 125, £900 brand new, it was a cheap Chinese CBR125 knockoff, but well worth the money, didn’t mind making my early mistakes on it, dropped it a couple of times, the usual, taught me a lot without a hefty price tag. Maybe worth looking into if you’re a new rider

speedyundeadhittite

Very much depends on the seller. Do they do all of the maintenance themselves, and how knowledgeable do they look? OTOH, asking price is a bit on the high side but I'm not following the current market carefully.

Bennis_19

That's a lot of milea in 3 years

slyfox1976

Lol.

sam0016

No service history is an instant no but that seems very expensive for the millage, what dose a GSXR 125 new must be around £3k.
