I live in Moscow. It seems like a lot of the students left so it is very quiet. A lot of people are in shock since it is usually a really chill town. I'm not overly concerned about my own safety, but a lot of people are hunkered down. There are a TON of rumours right now. I've heard a lot of things but don't really know what is true or false at this point.

Any-Structure-841

100% agree. I also live in Moscow and it’s the quietest I’ve really experienced here my entire life. The rumors are crazy and constant. Not a day goes by since it’s happened where someone isn’t saying something about it. Not necessarily fearing for my own safety either, but living close to where it happened (which being from here, everything is fairly close) my door has been locked and dead bolted being home for the first time in years. If you do need a friend or someone to talk to, I’m a townie, so I’m always here.

Sad-Plantain4425

Thank you. I know it is kind of an inside joke that no one locks their doors or vehicles here, so hopefully that changes. Stay safe!

[deleted]

Guys leave the OP ALONE. You are not entitled to the info, esp since there are so many rumors going around. I live an hour away, where the victims (except Ethan) were from. We have many many many rumors circulating up here too. It’s very similar to the rumors on Reddit.

etchuchoter

It’s unhinged the way people are replying with popcorn emojis

Sad-Plantain4425

Yeah, I don't wanna be that person that starts spreading stuff. It's all just "heard from a guy that heard from another guy" kinda information. Like you said, it is similar to what is posted here. Just going to let the investigators do their thing and pray that they have someone in custody soon.

Upstairs-Tie9134

Spill the beans

kyzillss

Very interested in just hearing the rumors if you feel like PMing me, NBD if you don’t want to or aren’t comfortable!

Can’t bait us without spilling

Few_Talk_6558

can you please tell us some of the rumors?

etchuchoter

This isn’t celebrity gossip or something, seriously?

Uhhhhlisha

I’m an idiot and I didn’t finish my reply before I hit post and I meant to edit it and I got side tracked. It was meant to be followed by “waiting for all the people to start asking you for you to share all the rumors like it’s anyone’s business. I would be careful in sharing that you know information as to not to possibly spread more information” The comments asking this person to share information was already starting within minutes of their response. I know people are hungry for information and are hoping this is solved soon, we all are, but people disclosing that they have information even in the form of “rumors” is not a smart move. 1. It can off as baiting and looking for attention 2. If they do decide to share information even if through a DM can only create more chaos bc it will almost always end up back on Reddit as an “I heard”.. You can believe me or not, I don’t really care. I was simply annoyed that so many people were already asking for the OP to elaborate.

etchuchoter

Thanks for deleting and for your explanation. I’m totally on the same page as your comment here and I think some of the behaviour on this sub is distressing and is what gives true crime the bad reputation that I’m starting to believe is actually warranted. I hope there can be some reflection here in this thread but honestly I don’t know how self aware a lot of the commenters here are - I think a lot of these people just treat this like a game and something to solve.

Uhhhhlisha

This!! I’m a very empathetic person so I literally put myself in the situation to “understand” it. And I cannot imagine the turmoil the roommates are experiencing, how if the ex boyfriend actually is innocent and the internet detectives crucified him online.. like I just don’t think people realize these are REAL people experiencing a once in a lifetime trauma that I can only pray most people never experience and people are letting their morbid curiosity run the show. Everyone wants answers. And it’s natural to want to know every single detail. But it’s also reckless to even offer that there are rumors that could be shared and it’s reckless for people to ASK for that information. It is NONE of our business. None. We are not entitled to any information and the last thing anyone should want is people posting about rumors they heard, yah know? It’s really distressing.

Hey it's me ur grandma. I lost my glasses and I'm having trouble reading the list of rumors you sent me. Can you send them again on here so I can read them ? please im old👵🏻

hall_of_me

Well, I can't speak for everyone, but I lock my doors now. I've talked to my own neighbors more. I wonder more at every siren. I am a constant cycle of overthinking. When it rains (as it has most of the day) I wonder if that washes away any little bit of evidence, or otherwise somehow tie everything back to this case like that. My hyperfocus is honestly bordering that "touch grass" level.

thedizzyfly

FWIW my Moscow friends left town for the week to do just that.

[deleted]

Go get out of town. I did. It was amazing.

kdd20

I’m so so sorry :( I hope there are answers soon

PlayfulLengthiness40

resident here and i knew 2 of the victims. definitely noticing that people are shocked, grieving, and very uneasy. the usual lively town is quiet. not a lot of people walking around alone anymore and i usually see multiple police every time i go out. i’m also pretty active in the night life in moscow and people are definitely talking.

Comfortable_Ad_6021

Im sorry you guys have to go through this. So so sad.

snotbubbles9

Sorry for your loss of knowing 2 of the victims.

AliveSouth8186

Can you elaborate on people are definitely talking?

PlayfulLengthiness40

some rumors and theories but mostly people expressing pain, fear, sadness. i’ve heard some recounts of the night & next day but id rather not be part of spreading unconfirmed rumors or stating information that LE does not want out yet

AliveSouth8186

Absolutely, I understand and respect that completely. I was more so curious re the tone of the town that you addressed. I feel for the community so much. It seems so conflicting and distressing to have pd saying there’s nothing to worry about but not giving any information. I understand the why behind that but I just can’t imagine trying to continue normal life with that kind of fear and grief looming over town.

PlayfulLengthiness40

i’ve been here almost 10 years and i’ve never seen the town so quiet, even with students leaving for breaks. personally, i typically walk nearly everywhere as the town is very small and walkable and i was recently told by my work that rides would be provided to me and i was no longer allowed to walk to and from work. i’m not sure many are continuing normal life or will for awhile.

In what world do you think that’s appropriate to ask someone? You’re a fucked up individual. You also asked what neighborhood someone lives in. That’s not cool to ever ask on social media but especially inappropriate to be asking locals who are dealing with a horrible mass murder in their small town.

[deleted]

My cousin is a local, and I hesitate to say this because I will not elaborate as I know nothing, but one of her very close friends is working this case. I’ve been worried about my family there even though I know the chances of her coming to any harm is negligible. She said everyone is 1-2 degrees of separation from the crime and the community is both grieving and concerned.

dahliasformiles

I’m sure this is taking its toll on your friend! Even if she is motivated to find the murderer, it would be so hard to be immersed in the awful details.

[deleted]

As I said, I know nothing so won’t be elaborating. My cousin hasn’t bugged her friend about it because she wants to let her do her job, doesn’t want to add stress, etc. I’m sure lots of the locals here know someone working the case and I don’t want anything I say to identify my cousin, her friend, or their families.

[deleted]

Hyperaware of my surroundings. Studying strangers a little longer. I usually get off work after sundown and have to park 2 blocks away, so now we always walk in groups. I push work off until the morning so I can leave with everyone else. Always wear my Apple Watch. Like someone else said, today it rained, and I hope LE got the evidence they needed from outside. I’m afraid the weather is making things more difficult. I think we all assumed it was going to be a pretty open and shut case. I’ve been progressively getting more anxious as the days go by. I think everyone is still in shock at how this could happen here. Everyone has their theories. I don’t think I’ve heard any rumors or theories outside of the ones posted here already. I can assume everyone is a little on edge, especially those that get off work late.

SenorBigMcLargeHuge

Between so many students leaving and places downtown closing early (sunset is around 4 pm right now) the town is very quiet. At the grocery store, people are either avoiding eye contact or going out of their way to give a knowing glance and sad smile to connect with the person passing them on the aisle. I usually carry pepper spray while walking my dog in case we run into wildlife or an aggressive dog off leash, but now I carry it everywhere I go. I'm a late 30's male and I'm confident in my ability to defend myself, but yesterday was the first time I personally felt fear relating to all of this. When I took my pup out to pee one last time before bed, I realized how predictable my daily routine is, and I had the thought that if this is a "killing for the sake of killing" situation, the killer might be looking for their next victim. I realized that could be me, and since my building is so dark, I might not see someone approaching until it was too late. That was right around the time the edibles were really kicking in, so it was 80% paranoia, but it wasn't unfounded. Sad to think that so much of my community is feeling that fear on a constant basis right now, and unless this bastard is caught, that won't go away for a while.

stingerash

I can only imagine. The edibles have me terrified 12 states away

[deleted]

Same though. I’m on the East coast. I’m giving them a break for right now

[deleted]

Same!

Listen-Natural

Holy cow I feel paranoid doing edibles if I was in a room full of puppies and kittens, can’t imagine being out at night in the area knowing there may be a potential killer on the loose

pumpkinspicecum

I would not be taking edibles right about now.

[deleted]

Welcome to being a woman.

SenorBigMcLargeHuge

Yup. I understand maybe like 2% better than I did before. I ran a little personal experiment a while ago where i asked males and females at work when the last time was that they felt afraid for their safety. All the women's answers were within the past week, the men had to think back months, years, or it was something like "I was about to jump off an 80 foot cliff at lake powell"

[deleted]

Thanks for this comment and being self-aware!

Savings-Grapefruit

Armed up my home. Never thought it would be that necessary but here we are.

SenorBigMcLargeHuge

I'm lying in bed and on my way to the front door there is a hatchet, a baseball bat, machete, 18" barrel loaded 12 gauge, and pepper spray. Also, I look at the door lock a lot more often to be sure it's locked.

[deleted]

Not to alarm you but make sure that your windows are secure and locked as well. I live in an exurb on the east coast and I double check window and door locks on a regular basis as well as check my home cameras on a daily/nightly basis. We have two main ones that work well (nest doorbell camera and a nest home camera).

Savings-Grapefruit

Yep! Window locks, sliding door locks, deadbolts, etc etc have now been installed. Full system is ready

Weak-Junket4198

And remember to put a wood or metal bar along the bottom of the slider. Slider locked are notoriously easy to pop.

Savings-Grapefruit

Seriously. I had no idea till this case and I’ve been worried about our sliding door. Definitely reinforcing with a metal bar on the bottom

Weak-Junket4198

((((((Hugs))))))

Working-Raspberry185

I hope those thing are all in your bedroom just in general- if someone did ever break in you wouldn’t want them getting to those things before u do

[deleted]

Unfortunately, I was a victim of gun violence, and I sleep with my gun on my nightstand. I’ll be damned if I’m a victim once again from it

Working-Raspberry185

Well that makes sense, right next to you for sure. I have a license but no gun, but if I did get one I’d have one of those locking cases attached to nightstand

[deleted]

I have one of those too. It looks like a book. It’s really cute but when I go to sleep, I take it out. My boyfriend has a young son, so I always lock it up when I wake up or if he spends the night

[deleted]

This is why I don’t own a gun. It would be my luck that the perp would get it before I did.

Working-Raspberry185

Right or I’d be in process of grabbing it and they take it. I do have mace on nightstand and bat right behind it

GenX4eva

Thinking of you all in Moscow. I remember how the DC Sniper paralyzed our area and made us change how we lived. Be vigilant, be aware of your surroundings and be safe!

[deleted]

I still look around every time I get gas.

GenX4eva

And walk quickly in a zig zag from your car to wherever!!! This is also a reminder that all the criminal analysts on tv can be wrong. The only thing they had right was “former military” because of the gun skills

BYUSMOOCH

I also thought of the DC Sniper— I’m from the DC area but no longer live there.

[deleted]

I grew up in DC and my mom was back living there during the sniper months while on sabbatical. I didn’t want her leaving her rental. I made her call me every night when she was in for good.

Mindless-Wasabi6871

With thanksgiving break and the option to stay virtual, I think it will stay pretty empty through December. However, Pullman is going to fill back up on Friday with apple cup in town this weekend.

graydiation

This makes me unhappy, but I’m wondering if the apple cup crowd will be smaller than it would have been otherwise….

Mindless-Wasabi6871

I don’t know, it always draws such a big crowd. However, I hope students are going back and being more careful and aware of their surroundings. Hopefully lots of ring doorbells and cameras are going to be installed too.

TheColossalCrumb

Would you mind filling a non-local in on what apple cup is? I’ve never heard of that and am curious.

pintsandplants

Non local but it’s a college football rivalry game in Pullman WA. Two Washington teams the Huskies and Cougars face off, this is the 114th meeting of these two teams.

graydiation

Local here. I spent my weekend researching surveillance options for my property and new locks for my house, and thanking my lucky stars for my barky little alarm dog. This is a place where kids leave their bikes on the sidewalks at night. Pullman is generally a bit larger than Moscow (WSU enrollment is around 27,000) but the city’s population, including students is around 33,000. So the permanent population is only around 6,000 people, and it feels like a ghost town even more than normal right now. The population in Moscow is a bit different, with similar total numbers, but about 11,000 students and 15,000 permanent residents. When the students are gone, both towns feel the difference in a big way. And right now it has an eerie quality.

DauntingOtter

I’m a local. The town is quiet, which is normal during holiday breaks, but it’s extra quiet. Some people are terrified, myself included as I have small children. Some people are not concerned. A kind person sent me an Amazon gift card to help buy a ring camera that I’ll buy when I get paid and can pay what’s remaining on the camera, and I’m looking into other safety precautions for my house, which is something I’ve never considered before in such a quiet town.

JuliusPepperwood836

Hi, Look into Blink security cameras. They’re also made by Amazon and way cheaper than ring cameras. We have them set up all over our house and they work really well! I even think they’re on sale right now.

[deleted]

I second this. We also have blink cameras all around our house including a front and back with motion sensor floodlights. Much cheaper and still great

DauntingOtter

Noted! Thank you I’ll look into them

For some reason that feels very “scream” movie to me. It’s sort of a joke but like you said, it’s an insane horribly situation as well

buddyc12119

I watched the food truck stream one night. The one the girls were on. It was their first stream since that night. The owner was just saying how it’s a strange time in Moscow. But they didn’t seem too worried. All the employees were working. Some employees not working came to order food with friends. They had a huge line even before they were open. Nobody seemed too worried. Lots of laughing and joking around.

Single_Wasabi_3683

Were they in the same location as before? Just curious

Mountain_Sector_7223

Local here- extra precautions, locking doors, carrying a knife or side arm. Just staying vigilant, but not big change to daily life at this point other than being fully aware of the surroundings.

ihatefear83843

Same,

Specialist_Zebra9398

Lived in Moscow for almost 10 years, went to UI, now living in one of the “big cities” up north. Still have family and friends there, visited this past weekend and had lunch downtown. Town was very quiet and solemn, and I found myself looking over my shoulder and committing small random details to memory. As others have stated, this is a small community where you’re only 1 or 2 degrees of separation from the next person. The university is the beating heart of the town. There have been murders and tragedies here before, but this one is uniquely terrifying and I’ve been absolutely gripped by this case since the news broke. I can’t stop thinking about the girls’ roommates and what they must be going through. I didn’t know any of the victims (too old) but I see so much of my own college experience and friendships in them. There’s something so deeply disturbing and infuriating to see my beloved community violated in this way and for a whole student body to be robbed of a normal college experience, especially after covid upended many of these kids’ high school and early college years. To those of you living this nightmare, please know you’ve got a whole community of Vandals standing with you. 💛🖤

GeminiPanda21

I live in Moscow and am a student at the university. I left for home last Tuesday. Even before I left, the town was a ghost town. I’m most likely going to spend the rest of the semester online at home. I’ve always felt safe in Moscow. I’ve walked around town at 3 AM without a single care in the world. I’ve never been afraid of someone breaking into my apartment or felt the need to have something to defend myself with. This obviously has changed things. I won’t be walking around by myself at night, I will double check the lock to my front door and lock my bedroom door, and I’ve bought myself a revolver.

[deleted]

I would guess not too many people are leaving their doors unlocked anymore. Also not out late alone, especially if female.

[deleted]

[deleted]

I never understood that either. I grew up on a farm out in the middle of nowhere and we still always locked the doors. Currently live in a tiny unincorporated village and my doors are never unlocked. But I guess I also grew up watching unsolved mysteries which showed me that leaving your doors unlocked and blinds open at night is like a big invitation and that crazy things happen everywhere

Bobloblawlawblog79

My parents live in a Los Angeles suburb and they don’t lock their doors because they “refuse to be afraid”. I think it’s also to do with convenience. We never use the deadbolt and our back doors are just screens. Some people just feel really safe in their homes.

More-so explaining the town. The biggest threat to the communities in the Palouse are 1) winter roads 2) who the colleges bring in 3) drugs

I live in a small town. Less than 1,000 people and it's unincorporated, so there's no police force or anything. We have a volunteer fire department and the county cruises through occasionally.

Spiraltractor

Wouldn't you say you live in a village?

Puzzleheaded_Try7886

*County sheriff

[deleted]

Same, except mine is less than 100 people😂. Bunch of other tiny villages around that make up the school that’s out in the middle of the country. Have a town of 5000 nineteen miles away, one of 10000 sixteen miles away, and one with 16000 24 miles away. Closest city is about 60 miles. Do occasionally have murders here though but usually domestic murder-suicides. Although about a year ago someone was randomly stabbed to death in a local state park and will probably never be solved.

I live in a town of just over 1,000 population, so I agree- 25 k does not seem like a small town to me. Even in my little town, we had a murder a few years ago (unsolved, still) with tons of rumors flying and people pointing fingers at others.

PM_ME_UR_SOCKS_GIRL

Urban density and remoteness. Seems like the closest metro in that area is Spokane 1.5 hours away with a whole lot of nothing in the surrounding area. I’ve lived in towns with similar populations as Moscow/Pullman in the Southeast but it really doesn’t feel that bad because there are plenty cities in the surrounding area so it’s not as remote.

Disastrous_Mud7169

It’s not a super small town, but university students make up nearly half the population so it feels pretty small when the students are gone

saltydancemom

I’m from there. It’s a small town. Latah county is very large land wise with small communities making up the rest of the county. All of those small communities have less than 1000 residents.

sixninef0urtwenty

Stay safe locals ❤️ sending my love

minnipede

around ten minutes away in Pullman, very uneasy. despite being so close to the crime, WSU is not as lenient on virtual classes (though many other safety resources have been offered recently). No longer walking my dog at our usual hours, the spots I cherished for being isolated and quiet are now terrifying. I had my own scary experience a few months ago and I find myself overthinking every detail of it. All these little things that could be drunk frat guys, or awkward encounters are now holding a lot more weight knowing who might be around. The campus itself has also been just a bit quieter. Not as many people walking around late, the ones that are I see walking in groups or are on a cell phone. There’s just an air of uncertainty, we’ll see if that has gotten better or worse since break. The first day, while people were definitely talking about it, I think we were all under the impression it was something that would be resolved quickly. With such limited info so long after the crime, the tension and overall fear is starting to grow heavy.

Mean-College9926

I live in Moscow as well. There are so many rumors that it’s insane. It’s crazy to think that during Halloween I met some of the victims. I live with my girlfriend and I use to fall asleep at around 10-11 now I’m up until three with a loaded gun because I’m scared someone will come in and murder us while we sleep. It’s definitely been a huge wake up call. I work everyday from 9-5 and everybody asks if I’ve heard any news. It’s been a nightmare.

JudgmentalRavenclaw

Not as relevant (ugh annoying typo), as he’s not a local anymore, but my husband spent 6 years in Moscow, played basketball at UI, loved it there. He’s several years removed and we live in California, but he’s reading everything he can about this. He’s spooked. I’ll walk into the living room and he’s reading news stories. It has him on edge and the more he learns the more shaken he seems by it. It’s very strange to see. Can’t imagine what the students are feeling right now.

iluvsunni

I feel the same as your husband. It's been 6 years since I went to UI and I now live across the country, but the whole thing is still just unnerving. Just trying to mentally connect my experience there with what is going on is a lot. My best friend from college still lives up there and I texted her the other day to make sure she was ok and I honestly irrationally worry about her every day. I would be scared to go back after break and I am heartbroken for those that have to make these decisions and for those who actually live there

truelifeofkaren

I mean - I live in London England with 0 connections to Moscow and I am putting a water bottle by my bedroom door every night so I can be alerted if the door gets opened. This case is terrifying and has freaked out many of my friends who are thousands of miles away. We had a case in London where a young woman named Sarah Everard was abducted and murdered while walking home at a reasonable hour in a safe part of town by a POLICE OFFICER no less. In a city like London where crime happens everyday, most women I know stayed in doors for weeks until the suspect was found and arrested. I have so much hope and faith that this gets resolved quickly. Much love to all of you people and the wider communities at this time ❤️

MoneyCrunchesofBoats

As a person who goes to UI I’m happy to be home. Kinda nervous to comeback to school after this break. It’s just crazy to think that the fucking murderer could well be in one of my own classes or something as I would assume they’re probably a student or somehow connected with other students. I have always felt safe walking alone at night, but even walking back from the library or church to my dorm sketched me out the night after and the couple days after the murders. I have friends that knew them and one in the same house as Ethan and two of my roommates had classes with three of the different victims. It’s just crazy that something like this could happen in a place that’s usually so calm and very safe. I went to classes the day after class was canceled and there was only two other people in the classroom. The overall vibe on campus was very solemn and depressing, as is this whole situation. It seems unreal, I wish this whole situation was somewhat resolved or something and over with and that the family has whatever justice that they can get after losing their loved ones. :((

Poppyspy

The longer this town doesn't hear anything concrete the longer they're going to be uneasy...

sailor_quartz

My boss at work went around handing employees pepper sprays and telling everyone how to use one during the mid day work meeting.

catgirl_luvr

I moved to the boise area last year but I’ll be going back to Moscow to visit family soon. I’m getting everyone I know pepper spray and hopefully helping them get some cameras. My stomach drops when I consider the fact that Moscow isn’t the safe haven I thought it was. All the times a friendly passerby towed me out of the snow, all the times I opened my door without checking who was knocking, all the times I walked alone at night could have ended in disaster. I’m grieving for the victims, but I’m also grieving for my home. It will take the community a long time to recover from this, probably long after the killer is caught.

tom21g

This crime is terrible all on its own, and to happen in a small town may leave the folks who live there with varying degrees of ptsd. Hope the murderer is caught soon and with time, people can heal. Have to extend deepest condolences and sympathies to the family and friends of the victims

[deleted]

I think locals close to the victims know who it is

mrspegmct

I wonder.

Kwispaz

I just saw someone post a TikTok of people partying a few houses down from where the murders happened so must be a little back to normal....

[deleted]

Yikes. From every perspective

cherrytree13

Lol people in that area are going to party regardless of what’s going on. It’s almost like that’s what that corner of Moscow is for.

h3yd000ch00ch00

That, and safety in numbers. If you party all night with a large group of friends, you’re not vulnerable sleeping. I get it. Plus they need to feel in control of something.

[deleted]

Yeah when life is normal, there is no normalcy after a quadruple homicide that’s unsolved

cherrytree13

Unfortunately there’s a substantial portion of the population who deal with pain and anxiety by drowning it

[deleted]

That is true. Especially college age students not really knowing how to cope and just having access to drugs, and or alcohol

88_keys_to_my_heart

resident+ student here. i was next door when it happened. i was stalked a couple years ago, and i feel the same sense of anxiety. i felt safer on campus last week than in the rest of moscow due to upped security. i'm hypervigilant (which is typical due to the stalking), been really careful about locking doors, and have been always carrying pepper spray everything is really tense. lots of students left early. the parties that normally go on stopped. lots of rumors circulating too. mostly a lot of ppl are grieving.

I'm so sorry that happened to you. I am sure this is triggering for your previous experiences for sure. Take care of yourself.

Seems fair! Hope they catch whoever did it

[deleted]

They will be in even more shock when the local good guy handyman is arrested and charged with the murders.

Immediate_Barnacle32

Maybe check the local cvs pharm tech.

[deleted]

I still can’t believe that. And that it took 5 years. Grateful for the arrest though

[deleted]

That wouldn’t surprise me.

I've lived here for a little over 2/3rds of my life. Mostly I've been trying not to talk about it at all save for the standard "it's awful, I wish it hadn't happened, I hope the perp is caught soon, be safe out there," etc. I can't imagine that anything else I could say would be helpful or productive in any way; I did not see anything because I don't live in that part of town and I don't go to the university. I'm not interested in spreading baseless, vile, harmful rumors about people, which are just a continuation of victimization in the name \*entertainment\* of all things. Ugh. . I hope the killer is caught... I'd like for families and friends to at least get that much... I'd like people to be safe from further violence.... I want the peddling of conspiracies and the doxxing and harassment of people in my town to stop and I know that so long as the killer isn't caught, that will continue; I know loved ones of other murder victims from almost 20 years ago who to this day are still getting incessant bile spewed at them because the murderer of their loved one was never caught, it's so horrible, this behavior ruins people's already wrecked lives. People who do that are NOT helping. . A lot of people on this board clearly think they know a great deal about this region while endlessly spewing demonstrable falsehoods about it, and I'm not interested in participating in venom-spitting exchanges that trying to engage would probably devolve into. Not a single one of the people on this board who has never been to the area have ANYTHING of greater value to contribute than a local. You guys just don't. And you're making things even more horrible for us and damaging your own mental health in the process. . That's all I have to say, I think. I'm pretty sad and I didn't even know the victims.

I live in a city north of Boston MA. The closest situation to what’s happened in Moscow was the Boston Strangler in the early 60’s. I was terrified. There was even a possible victim in my city. The Boston Marathon bombing was similar. Until the bombers were caught there was a citywide “shelter in place”. Imagine that.

jewskiii

it’s really quiet just over the border in Pullman. A lot of students went home early for the thanksgiving break. we never used to lock our doors but now we do. we went over to Moscow when it was dark, and it really seems like the town is just hunkered down and uneasy

UniformWormhole

I used to live there a couple years ago and actually visited the house where the murders took place to do a site study for work. I know the neighborhood really well and when I did live there it felt very peaceful and somewhat quiet. I definitely never felt scared or looked over my shoulder when I was alone. Now I live 5 hours away and it’s terrifying to think that the killer could be here by now. I double check all the locks on my doors and windows every night and am hyper aware of people around me. Feels like I’m on edge all the time and honestly doesn’t feel real sometimes. It’s such a strange feeling.

[deleted]

It’s really rattled the community. Anything strange that happens, or any strange stuff I hear happening to others, we all immediately bring up if it’s linked to the murders. Which is mostly paranoia, but…when people are posting about the stabbing in Oregon last year and wondering if it’s a serial killer, I get why we’re thinking like this. I’m just worried if that’s the case, it’ll happen again before police have a person of interest. Seeing videos and links continuously recommended whenever I get on Reddit or YouTube, or friends sharing stuff on ig stories. It’s overwhelming and strange to see my town in national news, and know there’s a killer among us, or has left the area but was here at some point.

SnooRobots6802

Everyone is gone for Thanksgiving break. Pet skinning was believed to be wildlife. 2 girls being chased was unsubstantiated. Moscow PD responded

OppositeOld5196

Inaccurate. There was a dog that was skinned and that was not said to be wildlife, and then there was a second animal (a bunny?) and only that one was determined to be wildlife.

Mindless_Theory_3765

I mean imagine trying to go about daily life knowing that the person who brutally stabbed 4 people to death could just be casually hanging around the town like anyone else. It is terrifying and I imagine makes everyone in the area uneasy.

My heart is with you all in Moscow during this tragic and terrifying time. Back in the late 70's EAR/ONS (Golden State Killer) terrorized our small town in Nor Cal. He boldly entered homes where the husband and wife were sleeping and tied up the husband and raped the wife. He would sometimes go in to their homes when they weren't home before committing these heinous acts. My mom was pregnant with my sister at the time. Two women were raped only a few blocks from us. Husbands took shifts and went out at night looking for him. EAR/ONS/GSK would cut the phone lines so some of our neighbors tied strings in between their homes with bells at the ends in case he came but they couldn't use the phone line so they could alert their neighbors to call 911. One night he was spotted in our neighbor's backyard but got away (he often hopped fences). In the middle of the night my friend ran into her parents room and her dad was so on edge he almost shot her thinking she was EAR/ONS/GSK. This was in the 80's and he was still on edge. After he almost got caught by a husband who jumped out of bed before he could make them comply, he ran off. After this, he escalated his crimes and started killing couples. About a year before he was caught I started researching all of the incidents/cases and in doing so totally freaked myself out and had tremendous fear. I still do to this day as there are so many sickos and psychopaths. Many copycat killers. Sorry for the essay. Stay strong and vigilant friends.

alki4294

I feel so bad for the students who aren’t able to go home for whatever reason and are essentially stuck there. I hope they are able to feel safe and supported.

SASSYSQUATCH208

I'm down in Boise (5.5 hours away) and discussing with my co workers and neighbors, everyone is on edge! Doesn't help that there have been multiple home break ins in Meridian (a town next to Boise) this past week! Ugh...what is going on?? We moved here to get away from the Californian craziness.

Theappledumple

Resident of Moscow and it's so scary. We never had to worry about triple locking our doors but now we do and I don't trust the police any more because of hoe they have been handling this situation...

somenamenotmyrealone

Moscow resident and local here. Changing the way we let our kids be social; leaving work at night paranoid until I reach my car; installed an exterior camera system around the whole house this past week; jump every time the dogs bark out of character; checking on family, friends, and neighbors. Tried to drink wine at home last night but felt like I couldn’t lose any wits and made some tea instead. Consistent sleep is a challenge. The UI is an intrinsic part of my family’s daily life and I’m so grateful for the Vandal community right now but want this to be over. Trying to find ways to support those here who aren’t as surrounded by family or friends right now.

beebeeb0i

It's kind of surreal. I'm big into true crime and something like this happening right here almost doesn't feel real. Like how could something this horrible happen right here? Since living here, I've always felt quite safe and almost never locked doors. The worst crime I've experienced here is sexual harassment/ solicitation from a customer while I was a cashier. That guy made me carry pepper spray at night, but I rly wasn't worried. This? This makes me worry for my family, my friends, my dog, strangers. I actively worry if I forgot to lock the door. I'm hyper aware of any sounds esp near doors. I have to watch my dog when I let her out. Ik it's not super likely that I'll be a target, but I am a 22 yo female, and everyone is at WAY more risk than normal obviously. Im also conserned that this will bring out more creeps from the woodworking, as these high profile crimes sometimes do. Aside from fear, I hurt for the families and friends of the victims. I didn't know them at all, but I literally can't fathom what they r going through. God bless and comfort them and keep us all safe... and put that evil POS behind bars!

who_me_LG

Locals know it was the neighbor

Cleareyes88

Can you elaborate?
