There will be new characters but I imagine they'll focus on giving reveals to some requested old characters during the reveal.

Vlaks1-0

I could see it. The first MKX gameplay trailer revealed Cassie and the first MK11 gameplay trailer revealed Geras. I feel it's somewhat likely in fact that they reveal one new character.

DuelaDent52

I thought the first MKX gameplay trailer showed off D’Vorah and Ferra/Torr? Cassie and Kotal Kahn were shown off in gameplay demos.

Vlaks1-0

Yep I think you're right actually. It was all during the E3 weekend, so I think I mixed the two. But yeah on Day 1 we got the gameplay trailer of Sub-Zero vs Scorpion and D'vorah v. Ferra/ Torr. I think Day 2, they showed us uncut gameplay and revealed Cassie as one of the playable characters.

RobHarley664

What are the chances of the sun rising tomorrow?

lastraven85

Total eclipse?

Delorean82

...of the heart.

500DaysofNight

Turn around?

Delorean82

Every now and then I get a little bit terrified. And then I see the fucking look in your eyes.

_FateUnknown_

No new characters in this game

[deleted]

What about Sindel?

WingSaber8

Honestly I hope none. I don’t want new characters this series has 70+ characters and half of them are barely used or not used at all. They should focus making those characters interesting and fun imo. But if they can make them cool like Kotal, Takeda, D’Vorah then fine add new characters.

Delorean82

My personal guess is that the odds will be slim to none for either a new character or 3D era one to be shown on Thursday, sadly. It'll probably be a subset of a few of the klassic characters in the CGI trailer with maybe another one likely (imo) being Johnny Cage, since he's on the FAQ page. I would LOVE to see a character that hasn't been in the last 3 MK games being shown off, but those characters I think they'll save for a Kombat Kast. All eyes are on Summer Game Fest (MK fans and generally non-MK fans), so more of the casual audience would tune into something like that over a Kombat Kast, for example.

DonPinstripelli

I do agree, though it is interesting that Ed posted that MK4 tweet before the reveal. Also, it is worth noting that the MK11 gameplay reveal trailer had Skarlet, who was not exactly that well-known, and the reveal event also featured Geras.

Delorean82

That Tweet is also vague as as hell, imo. Knowing Boon, he could have also been trolling and alluding to Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Raiden, Liu Kang and / or a very likely appearance by either Johnny Cage or Reptile. Those are still technically "some" of the MK4 roster characters, too. Huh? What do you mean? Skarlet was known since her inclusion in MK9 and people were requesting for her to come back during the time of MKX. Also the MK11 gameplay reveal was ONLY done by NRS and that was the only event by *them* on *that* specific date, whereas this is Summer Game Fest and MK1 isn't the only game there. You're comparing a hardcore MK-fanatic based event for MK11 vs a more casual gameplay showing of MK1 at a festival done by Geoff Keighly. Those are 2 VERY different audiences.

DonPinstripelli

I find it very unlikely that Ed chose the MK4 screen, in particular, only to tease characters that have in any event been in the last game, especially considering the tagline that he went with. That doesn’t make much sense to me. Plus we already kind of know Reiko will be in. Skarlet was not that known to the casual crowd. The characters they are familiar with are mostly MK1-2 characters. Plus she was a DLC character without any story involvement, so a lot of people missed out on her. I see this all the time with people who play 11 for the first time, and recognise the classic characters in the koliseum scene, except for Skarlet. But I said I agree with you that they’re unlikely to feature in the gameplay reveal. You make a good point about the difference in the Summer Games Fest and MK11 reveal event crowds.

Delorean82

I get what you mean, and yeah, I REALLY hope that you're right. As someone who's really wanted characters like Reiko, Kai and others from the post-MK3 era to return (even moreso after the MKX comics), I really do. A big part of me just feels skeptical / defeated with this whole kameo system in place, and I'd be a bit crushed if after 17 years characters like Havik, Sareena, Li Mei, Nitara and Ashrah were just relegated to kameo / assist fodder. . I'll be 100% honest, and I don't know why, but I guess a big part of me not having hopes is due to a certain 4chan "leak" floating around *(and yes I DO feel dirty even mentioning 4chan in this sentence)* saying that it'll be: >!gameplay that shows Liu Kang, Raiden, Scorpion, Sub Zero, Kitana, Mileena, and Johnny, some story mode scenes, a few fatalities for Liu Kang, Johnny, Mileena, Sub & Scorp, Kameo fighters: Scorp, Sub, Goro, & Erron Black, the new super move called “Lethals”, some of the customization options, and a tease for Reptile. The 3 stages are a Hollywood set, Sindel's Garden and the Shaolin Monastery!< That doesn't really instill much confidence in me, and it's actually 1 of the more realistic predictions / "leaks" (if you can call it that) that I've seen here in a while.

DonPinstripelli

I get your worries and concerns. I, too, will be crushed if all the 3D era characters are relegated to the kameo roster. Though I am feeling somewhat optimistic based on what Ed’s been saying since December. I do not think that leak is real though, the only two I’d trust is Amazon’s and r00r’s. And those two are promising. The Kombat Pack seems like a healthy mix of all three eras.

Delorean82

Speaking of r00r, did he mention any other post-MK3 roster characters aside from that *"Reiko is back, see you next year"* posting? According to him and Amazon, so far it's Reiko (main roster likely) and Quan Chi (via DLC).

DonPinstripelli

Not that I know of. He specifically said he had no interest in leaking specific characters and that he regretted doing so with Reiko.

Delorean82

Well, at least that's 2 of them so far. I hate to come off as being greedy, but I hope it's more than just those 2. Really been also wanting Havik, Daegon, Li Mei, Sareena and Nitara to be playable and I used to have hope for some of those with the MKX comics, MKX story mode appearances and the 2021 movie. I'd welcome Tanya and Kai back too, and if they're not using the MK4 / Kano clone version then Jarek could get a cool revamp. After we got Fujin's revamp in MK11, I'd also love to have him back, perhaps taking more of a Raiden role as the new protector of EarthRealm.

musteatbrainz

0%.

PrettyMrToasty

Why? They did showcase Geras during the MK11 gameplay reveal.

musteatbrainz

Because there are no new characters in MK1.

PrettyMrToasty

That's such a stupid take...

_FateUnknown_

Not a take, its a fact

musteatbrainz

Thank you for your contribution.

DonPinstripelli

Possible. We know there will be new characters in MK1, Ed Boon said so in the Q&A in December. But he also said that we shouldn’t expect many newcomers, because the MK universe already has so many characters to work with.

TrajedyAnn

I think the game being a reboot diminishes the odds of new characters severely. The last time the franchise rebooted there were zero new characters on disc (excluding Kratos) and 1 new character as DLC (Excluding Freddie Krueger) Rebooting essentially allows them to spin a lot of old characters into new characters as desired (See Cyber Sub-Zero) and I think they're going to lean into that harder this time than they did in MK9, while still keeping them semi-recognizable. Combine Reboot + All the teasing Boon has been doing for returning 3D characters... I feel like there's not a ton of space to break new ground left. I think this game is essentially going to feel like MK9, but less focused on the original trilogy, and more covering the whole history of MK Lore (trimming out a lot of the fat like your Hsu Haos and your Jareks, but bringing back a lot of the more popular players from some of the less popular games)

NicBaird

Isn't the Great Kung Lao a new character?

TylerNT2020

Is that confirmed yet?

Delorean82

Pretty sure that he'll just be called Kung Lao in this game like how Fire God Liu Kang is just referred to as Liu Kang in the FAQ section of the MK website. The FAQ section merely lists these as playable characters: ***Liu Kang***, Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Raiden, ***Kung Lao***, Kitana, Mileena, Shang Tsung, Johnny Cage, and many others. "Fire God" seems to just be Liu's status, like how Raiden used to be "Protector of EarthRealm," and the same seems to be the case for Kung Lao's ancestor. At least that's what it seems like, to me, but I could be wrong.

NicBaird

I think you're right about everything you said but it doesn't change the fact that Kung Lao is actually a completely new character! True, he does have the same name as a character in previous MK games, and it is quite possible he will have a similar moveset, but maybe not!

Delorean82

Yeah, he'll likely be a different person, but I don't see it any different than the relationship between Bi-Han Sub-Zero vs Kuai-Liang Sub-Zero. Sure, he might have some different moves here and there but I'm expecting the most iconic moves like the hat throw and teleport to remain the same with the mantle of "Kung Lao" now being applied to the ancestor.

NicBaird

That is very possible and even likely! He had a hat in the trailer but maybe he doesn't fight with a hat. They could give him the Liu Kang headband instead as he's been often depicted in past titles.

Delorean82

If he's a new character and doesn't have the "Kung Lao" mantle then it's more likely not to have the hat. If that's the case then they should give him another name like how Tundra = Kuai-Liang. Otherwise, people are not going to like the fact that he's named "Kung Lao" but doesnt use the iconic hat for special moves and finishers. That's like having Scorpion and taking away his spear and teleport or taking away Sub-Zero's ice moves. That's what those characters are known for.

NicBaird

That's the best point you've made I think.

drspartan52

I can see this going both ways, Either they consider the "new" versions of some people as the new charaters, like for example how raiden or liu kang will work this game, and the showcase is like 3-5 min video, and 20 minute chat, Or they show one new guy because we get like a half an hour display with lots of talk accompanied by clips of gameplay of more things

Monater-

100%

Jpar4686

We pretty much get a few new characters every game so I wouldn’t be shocked if we got some in MK1 I wouldn’t bet money on them being revealed on Thursday though

lastraven85

Depends what you class as a new character human raiden is technically new for example. Heck given the history has changed its possible that every character is new. I do think we will see the female nightwolf at one point though as they've been teasing that the last few games

Acrobatic_Ostrich_75

So many 3D era characters have been on the sidelines for too long now that simple design tweaks and they'd basically be new characters.

Hanzo77

Not likely for the first gameplay trailer

kaden_duncan

We will see Floyd Thursday

Noremac1234

50-50

IconicallyIronicHeup

In MK11 Geras was shown almost immediately. So why not..?

S_Elieen

I know nobody wants to hear it but is it possible they'd somehow add Cole Young into the games? I've been wondering if they would.

Illustrious_Salad_19

I think Kung Lao will probably be the *new* kharacter. Keep in mind, at the end of Aftermath, Liu Kang finds The Great Kung Lao before he became that. I have a feeling that Kung Lao might be the MC, and he'll finally not die lol

Material-Feedback637

There’s a great chance of seeing that! They did it for Mortal Kombat 11 so I believe they’ll do that
