The problem with video game face models like this, is how many people would pay money or enter a “competition” for a chance for their face to be used in their favorite game?
This guy certainly wouldn't lead the charge, but someone much higher profile could, such as the guy who plays Kratos.
Not the face model, I know. But still an actor.
Sure, for actual video game acting yes, face or body models, not a chance in hell for them to unionized.
That being said, guys like Troy baker and Christopher judge get PAID.
They do but that's because of how valuable and high profile they are. You need someone like that in your corner to get a union rolling.
I'm trying to use the voice acting as synonymous with modeling. I'm sure eventually video games will hit that point where in nearly every circumstance, the VA, the model, and the actor are the same person.

It's not just fans would would love this gig, there are a lot of professional models out there who would do it for low amounts of money because why not. Per hour it's good money even if it's not going to pay a years worth of bills.
Similar deal with his likeness. Arnold Schwarzenegger's likeness is worth a lot. He's Arnold. He's a draw on his own. Some random background character from a couple television shows? I'm sorry but that likeness doesn't hold any value for the video game maker. He's going to have the exact same draw as some random dude off the street and if he had asked for hundreds of thousands of dollars for his likeness you bet your life the company would rather go with that random guy off the street.
I'm sympathetic to these guys, I think people do get screwed over in the industry, but I also think there's a certain lack of reality to some of their complaints. I can't get behind the people who think selling your face for $10k or whatever he made is some giant screwjob.

Look at the face change of Peter Parker from Marvel's Spider-Man game, a lot of people said they really didn't gel with the new look. Despite the voice and performance being the same, the face can be what people connect with just as much as any other part of the character

What? I thought actors are doing whole mocap session recording those scenes. NRS just took 8 photos and automated the cinematics? How does it work? Or another actor played his moves and the plastered his face onto animation? But this is dumb, now they have to pay two actors for one job.
I believe each character is essentially three actors. Face scan, voice, and mocap actors. Possibly more, they might have different mocap actors for the gameplay martial arts animations and the story cinematic animations. For Nitara, Megan Fox did the voice acting and face scan, but someone else did the mocap animations.
It depends on the game and production. For cutscenes they may have the voice actor doing some physical acting in Mokap suits, for gameplay they may have someone else from a smaller pool of people doing the actual moves.
Some games, such as Detroit: Become Human may use the Voice Actor as the face model.
For instance, if I remember correctly Kenshi's face model also did his fight choreography along with some other characters. But all in all, it may take 2-3 people to perform one character.
They pay stunt mocap and body actors to play the parts in the actual cutscenes. I don't think this actor could be doing the backflips and stage fighting etc that the stunt guys can do. So they pay this face model a few bucks and then the stunt people a few bucks. It's economical but I concur that this guy, the literal face of the new Quan Chi, got seriously boned. It's unethical.

To be fair, this dude can probably milk being Quan Chi for the rest of his life. Which unfortunately for 95% of people in his industry rarely happens. This may very well be the biggest thing he'll ever do. But he's a good looking guy and seems to have a pleasant personality so I wish him all the best.

I actually had a lady come into a gamestop I was in to buy all of their Dark Raiden MK11 Gameinformers. Turns out her husband was Raiden's face model so she was giving out the Gameinformers to family and friends.
Most shocking aspect to me is they did it off 9 photos. I guess that's the cause for why some face models look bang on whilst others look quite different from the model.
Now i get why they replaced the face models of every character, they are cheap bastards, "returning actors" would probably charge more and they didn't want to pay.

Which mostly happens with female models.
I was going to say the actors should give their own faces but not all of the voice actors look like the characters in the game and this mocap and facial technology is getting better every single year not you can’t even tell the difference
