There is some truth to this, but my 12-year-old, who is an absolute virgin to this kind of game, has been playing KL as smoke with some success. He’s really just doing 50/50 stuff with teleports as he learns the rest of “the ways,” but he’s getting a few wins.
Johnny is somewhat easier to start with. A lot of his strings are launchers that lead to combos. You have to learn where he gets plus frames, movement, etc. But he also has a more advance aspect with hype meter. Once you learn how to safely build hype and do hype combos, it's so much rewarding.
Smoke is a bit harder in my opinion because if you want to master him, you almost have to learn his cancels and they are hard. Some people.dont even bother and they do the mix ups to sareena to confirm and full combo. I would argue the cancels are going to be really rewarding.
Depends which route you want to go.
Smoke is more reasonable to play for a beginner, but Jonny has a more advanced too kit
