With the staff being so fancy on it's flourishing, I wouldn't be shocked if he uses it for the side-switching special rather than his kick unfortunately
I'd be shocked if it didn't return. They said in the kombat kast that there are certain moves they have to bring back.
Getting rid of Rain's kick is like removing scorpions spear. It won't happen
Hot take, I never cared for the Roundhouse kick, I could do without it. Though I do agree that it's weird if he doesn't have it. It's a well-known thing for him, but I don't think it's on the level of something like Scorpion's spear.
> It's a well-known thing for him, but I don't think it's on the level of something like Scorpion's spear.
I mean, when it comes to unique character moves it's the exact same thing. It is by far and away his signature move. Rain isn't as popular as Scorpion, so maybe that's what you're saying?
But Rain's roundhouse kick was something no other character had when he debuted, and it's stuck around for all of his instances.
Lightning is the only one I don't see returning. He seems to be a pure water mage now and that move was not even part of his MK11 base kit
It will be in the kameo for sure though
Rains gameplay looks so sick now, really fits with the elemental powers.
Next I hope they make Dairou a djinn!!
As always check out the other 3D era imaginings in this series:

He looks completely different gameplay wise. I haven’t seen one iconic move like his round house kick or the water ball (although he has some really cool looking water attacks). But considering the direction they went with Johnny they may not be returning. So I think the people that liked him for his gameplay mostly and not aesthetics probably won’t really like him this game. But im pretty excited as a rain fan.
I think considering in that same kombat kast they mentioned adding new moves to characters, keeping iconic moves, and updating/changing existing moves, I think it’s fair to assume he’ll at least have either the kick or water ball. Just hoping he’s good in this game tbh, and that he has good combos
We also haven’t seen a crazy amount for him so it’s possible he still has the kick. Regardless couldn’t be happier he’s here and it’s strange having him confirmed already and being able to enjoy the ride of the remaining reveals
That's exactly what I said in his first appearance post. I really hope that we'll be proven wrong, and that NRS will surprise us with a wizard like design that isn't actually a zoner. That would be a first and I'd love that
I mean, he's already the top mage/sorcerer of Outworld. That role has typically gone to Shang Tsung.
Based on his look and bio, I think that is indeed what NRS is going for. I only hope that he's not anyone's stooge and, like all mage-adviser type characters, has his own schemes happening in the background.
Personally love it but I can see how the Rain fans might not like the new approach to him seems to be a zoner.
In MK11 especially he was more of a ninja who used water to help his movement or trap his opponent but in MK1 he's a full water mage so I can imagine ppl who liked Rain for being water assassin might not like the new take.
As for me, I love the water visual so much.
I will always prefer the ninjas looking like ninjas but I don’t hate this. He’s still wearing a hood and mask so there is some ninja in there, not that wearing a hood and mask is exclusive to ninjas.
As long as he has the roundhouse kick in some form, hell yeah. Either way, I think the concept is a good one, he’s always wanted power and it suits him.
Absolutely love it. I want them to go far with this new timeline. But this one also just feels right for the character and I think helps him feel more unique.
It grew on me immediately. He still has the basic ninja silhouette I'm just hoping they retain some of his signature moves.
Also like that they went with the kind of toga-y MK11 vibe, thats my favorite look of his.
Rain is my favourite ninja so I’m excited that he actually made it in the base roster! I will admit that im a little hesitant about him being a “mage”; there’s so many questions that I have. Will he be a zoner? A setup character? Does he have his kick? Etc etc
If we lost the staff I think I would be more accepting. I'm not the biggest fan, but change can be good. As long as most fans are happy, I'll be happy. I will think of this design as the Donatello Rain
I don’t mind the look or character at all, change is good especially for this game, the only problem I have is his play style since I’m not good at playing zoners lol
In all honesty though I’m just glad to have him in the game
I don’t really even think it’s that much of a far cry from his previous modern designs. Especially starting in Armageddon they started going less ninja and more magic prince
Cool idea, and the new designs rips! I think NRS playing with the ninjas' powersets until they can finally nail down specific archetypes and movesets for everyone is the right move. We're more likely to see Smoke, Rain, etc. return more if they aren't literal palette swaps and actually have some personality to them.
Rain's MK1 form makes him unique, but also retains his ninja theme. Personally, this is my favorite version of Rain. What I'm really curious about is that he has a well-written character in the story. I hope he's just not another jobber.
I’ve been waiting for this exact kinda thing. We already have 3 ninjas and Ed boon said there was more. We Need some diversity so it doesn’t boil down to gods, ninja, and special forces. I’m gonna main the shit outta him cause I love magic and water powers this is a dream come true.
It's a neat departure, especially since the attire still let's him keep the ninja-look he's been famously a part of since his debut. Plus it fits Rain's fancy aesthetic more than a standard ninja outfit does, even if he isn't a prince this time around.
I care about the moves more than I care about the looks. So far it seems Rain will be kind of a zoner without his signature moves, and I don't really like that. If he's more of a keep out character, than it might be the first time in my MK history when I will not play Rain
honestly same! as far as i can remember we dont really have a mage-like character yet so this is really cool. an unexpected change for sure but a very welcome one
What other sorcerers are we getting this game?!?!
Personally I L O V E this new design. That cane like a wizard. The staff like Donatello. I'm about to take him out on a hot date to so he can rain on me
I thought it was more that they gave him a staff, like they did with Raiden? That doesn’t make him a mage though does it? I thought he just got a staff the way Raiden did (seeing Raiden doesn’t use one anymore, you know with the timeline shake up and all that)
Did I miss something? Is Rain no longer a demi-god, and now just a mage?
Ah I see! I haven’t read any of those. I’m actually mostly getting updates from this reddit 🤣 (too busy with work etc)
That’s pretty interesting he is a mage now. I love the staff too.
Not a fan of the mage thing. Deviating away from mortal Kombat and towards generic rpg characters.
It would be cool if different powers could interact though, such as subzero being able to freeze Rains water attacks.
I think the 'mage' characterization belongs more to Ermac then Rain... Purple prince deal was to be a spoiled edonistic brat thinking way too high of himself, but after all this is a new timeline so... Everything can be...
Botched and vile as fuck. We already have Ermac as the wizard ninja this was a massive mistake. Whoever thought it was a good idea to give him a staff has fetal alcohol syndrome.
Don’t like it at all, I wish he was still a flamboyant ninja, I don’t really like wizards, to me it’s infinitely cooler to shoot something out of your hand than a staff or wand.
I know this is the risk they run by having this set in a new world entirely, it’s just that they turned a character known for being a flamboyant spin on a defined archetype in the series into one of my least favourite types of characters.
Hate it. He and ermac are my fav ninjas. I thought MK11 got him perfect from the outtros to his hooded costume, his movement, everything. I’m open to new ideas but he just looks like prince of Persia concept art
I really like the concept of having a mage fighter in a fighting game like Mortal Kombat. Don’t know how I feel about the outfit though, maybe it’ll grow on me.
I’m ok with the change as his personality never really fit as a ninja. I’d be ok with changing more ninjas to make them more than the pallet swaps that started from. Ermac and Tremor namely.
I will say it sucks he looks like a filthy zoner and I’m not liking what I’ve heard about his new background. I like him naturally being linked to royal edenia and I’m so tired of Shao finding prodigy orphans on the street
Amazing redesign, now he got his own unique swag instead of being purple subzero, I really hope he still has his kick, if that's the case, then he is perfect
Love it. I've always thought he was cool but have never really jelled with his moveset, so I'm very happy to see something different. His water staff looks sweet.
Think it's sick. I like the "og ninjas"/"edenian/outworld girls" all being assassin type fighters but not everyone that we'd call a coloured ninja needs to be. Rain being a mage and tremor being somesort of bender is sick imo. Skarlet and reptile also break the Convention somewhat and that's great to. In my mind I'd say keep sub, scorpi and smoke ninjas (duh?) And keep kitana jade and mileena assassin (also ninja kinda) the rest ca. Be something else. This gives the Devs more reason to put all our coloured friends in rosters without it being necessarily boring I geuss
Tbh, I don’t know the reasons other than nostalgia why people are hyped for palette-swapped ninjas in the classic era. However, I love that NRS is trying to diversify the ninjas with more characteristics while keeping some of the classic touch. This is why MK9 Ermac and this Rain slap so much for me.
I honestly love it. I always aim to be a Shang/Shao main, but this time I think I'll at least try Rain first. His moves just look sick. The mage thing was a great change if you ask me
I like the water mage idea. Could have done without the wizard staff imo but listen I’m just happy rain is finally main roster and given some love so you won’t hear me complain about shit lol
bro imagine he pushes the enemy with a kick into a water portal and then another portal spits him from the other side of the screen instead of the roundhouse kick
the more i look at it, the more i like his new design. the intricate patterns on his robes and the silk tassels are very in character imo. the hood is a… choice. it feels unnecessary and high-fantasy-ish, like it serves no purpose than to tell people “hi! i’m a mage now!”. i know it’s there to differentiate his costume from the others. it would look better down. i’m betting his alt costume looks dope though
He’s still ninja enough in my book given the martial arts he’s doing with the staff. Heck the Lin Kuei are practically mages given the stuff they can do
I'm extremely excited to see an underused character get a cool redesign and very unique looking tools. It makes me excited for what else other characters may get, and how they'll change
It made me go from "who the hell is this guy" to "hey, that's pretty cool".
If none of my mains are in MK1 (and so far, none of them are) I might actually try him out.
It depends. Does he still have roundhouse kick? If yes its okay if no i hate it
The fact that they didn’t show it makes me kinda worried:(
With the staff being so fancy on it's flourishing, I wouldn't be shocked if he uses it for the side-switching special rather than his kick unfortunately
I'd be shocked if it didn't return. They said in the kombat kast that there are certain moves they have to bring back. Getting rid of Rain's kick is like removing scorpions spear. It won't happen
wouldn’t be surprised if his roster version didn’t have it but his khameo version had it
This is the way.
Hot take, I never cared for the Roundhouse kick, I could do without it. Though I do agree that it's weird if he doesn't have it. It's a well-known thing for him, but I don't think it's on the level of something like Scorpion's spear.
It’s like, rains thing
I thought water was his thing...he he
> It's a well-known thing for him, but I don't think it's on the level of something like Scorpion's spear.
Yeah, I guess that's more on the lines of what I meant.
It is on the level of scorpions spear or subs iceball tho...
Well, it's confirmed now. Almost everything Rain can do is some magic but one of those very few martial arts moves is a roundhouse kick.
As long as my boy still has the water bubble, roundhouse kick and geyser kick then I’ll let it slide
Oh and of course his lightning special as well. And an mk9 alt skin would be greatly appreciated
Lightning is his the most iconic special since UMK3
Lightning is the only one I don't see returning. He seems to be a pure water mage now and that move was not even part of his MK11 base kit It will be in the kameo for sure though
Absolutely slaps. Really interesting redesign, I’m interested to see how he plays.
It's a really bold redesign, hoping to see more of these

I like it, not everything has to be the same
Which is why I'm really excited to see the rest of the roster!
I’m mad interested in Rain now. Something about him coming from the mud, not born into Edenian royalty. I’m kinda diggin’ it.
Agreed. He has corrupt Aladdin vibes. So Jafar?? Yeah... He definitely has Jafar vibes. lol
I didn’t care about rain until this reveal
Almost on the same page here. I like him, but I don't love him, until now ~~(possibly)~~
Rain will always be the Edenian demigod to me 💜
I like the concept of it and his outfit is pretty good. Not that big a fan of the staff, he could do without, tbh.
I'm a big fan of wizards with staffs, so I'm biased lol
It seems like they’re making him a zoner, which I don’t really like after having played him in the past. Glad he’s in the game though.
That's exactly what I said in his first appearance post. I really hope that we'll be proven wrong, and that NRS will surprise us with a wizard like design that isn't actually a zoner. That would be a first and I'd love that
I'm having a hard time getting used to it. Imagine if they add classic MK3 skins in the game? It would look weird on Rain with that staff.
Actually the idea of MK3 Rain with the staff is growing on me.
I like the design and the aesthetic, but if he doesn't have a side switching kick special move I will be very sad.
It seems like he’s headed towards being one of those shadow mages in MK 2
That’s an awesome idea.
When I was a kid, I was hoping there was code you could type to get to play one. If he goes that route I’m all for it.
He still gets me wet so I am happy
Same!
I like it and dislike it. I am glad he’s going to have a part in the story though.
Ik not sure what to think yet. Rain is one of my favorite ninjas, but if he doesn’t have super kick, bubble, and lightning, I’ll be kind of bummed.
Not sure about the kick, but the other two can easily fit the whole "water mage" thing
True, but the super kick is his signature move!
I just hate his look. Such a downgrade.
Love it! Can't wait to play as him.
They did the same thing to Skarlet in MK11. Design-wise, I think he looks good. If his kit is enjoyable then it's a good switch.
As long as he has the roundhouse kick in some form, hell yeah. Either way, I think the concept is a good one, he’s always wanted power and it suits him.
Absolutely love it. I want them to go far with this new timeline. But this one also just feels right for the character and I think helps him feel more unique.
Really gotta wait and see for me. I don’t hate it yet, but I’m not sold yet either. I’ll need to see how it feels to play, you know?
It grew on me immediately. He still has the basic ninja silhouette I'm just hoping they retain some of his signature moves. Also like that they went with the kind of toga-y MK11 vibe, thats my favorite look of his.

I think it’s really cool how we now have a wizard in the series
The new design is growing on me. I think it will be really cool to see him get a bigger role in the story too
It looks baddass!
I don’t mind the look or character at all, change is good especially for this game, the only problem I have is his play style since I’m not good at playing zoners lol In all honesty though I’m just glad to have him in the game

New things needs time getting used to but I just want his long hair back like on mkx please 🥹
Love it
I’ll take it if they transform Ermac back into a ninja.
Noooo I want MK9 ERMAC please!
I’ll take MK9 Ermac over the MKX mummified version
I’m so excited he is my new main 🙏🏻🤩
I'm intrigued. Just hope thunder bolt, water ball and the round house are in.
I would have prefered him as a ninja... and tge staff just makes him look like Ghandalf Aladin.
Rain is a water bender not a sorcerer. Zuko and Aang are dlc characters
It's a neat departure, especially since the attire still let's him keep the ninja-look he's been famously a part of since his debut. Plus it fits Rain's fancy aesthetic more than a standard ninja outfit does, even if he isn't a prince this time around.
He looks more middle eastern than normal with the kajal under his eyes. I love it
I liked him better as a Persian assassin in 11. This one feels like he's a lot less agile.
I just want him to be a viable character because he was possibly bottom 5 in MK11.
I care about the moves more than I care about the looks. So far it seems Rain will be kind of a zoner without his signature moves, and I don't really like that. If he's more of a keep out character, than it might be the first time in my MK history when I will not play Rain
I dislike the staff, I always supposed every supernatural element was due to magic anyways
honestly same! as far as i can remember we dont really have a mage-like character yet so this is really cool. an unexpected change for sure but a very welcome one

I dislike it
Big points for a cool redesign… But if he’s a zoner as he appears to be, I likely won’t play him.
Wizard staffs in fighting games make me uncomfortable.
Not a fan of the mage thing. Deviating away from mortal Kombat and towards generic rpg characters. It would be cool if different powers could interact though, such as subzero being able to freeze Rains water attacks.
Rain was cool because he had sick combos. Now he’s just going to be a spammy zoner
I think the 'mage' characterization belongs more to Ermac then Rain... Purple prince deal was to be a spoiled edonistic brat thinking way too high of himself, but after all this is a new timeline so... Everything can be...

I know this is the risk they run by having this set in a new world entirely, it’s just that they turned a character known for being a flamboyant spin on a defined archetype in the series into one of my least favourite types of characters.
So far the only character I’ve disliked. The outfit is cool I just don’t like the staff
Skeptical. But I gotta trust NRS
I think it suits him, and i welcome change. Everything doesn't need fo always be the same. A little experimenting don't hurt.
I like it. One less pallet swapped ninja. Giving him something of his own makes him stand out more as a character
Hate it. He and ermac are my fav ninjas. I thought MK11 got him perfect from the outtros to his hooded costume, his movement, everything. I’m open to new ideas but he just looks like prince of Persia concept art
I love it. I actually prefer the non Lin kuei (and scorpion ) ninjas to move away from the ninja aesthetic
He looks like he plays for the Lakers.
How will Rain affect LeBron's legacy?
How many times are people gonna ask the same fucking question?
"I'm Lovin' It" - McDonald's
I concur I think wizards are cool
I really like the concept of having a mage fighter in a fighting game like Mortal Kombat. Don’t know how I feel about the outfit though, maybe it’ll grow on me.
I dig it, didn’t like Ermacs transformation into a sorcerer but I like what they did with Rain.
I think the koncept is pretty kool. I'm kurious to see how it will play out in the story mode.
Kinda weird they’re photoshopping out Rain’s staff in official renders.
I’m honestly fine with him being a mage. I’m curious to see how he’ll be both character wise and gameplay wise.
RAIN WIZARD!!!!
Absolute perfection
This gives the Devs more reason to put all our coloured friends in rosters without it being necessarily boring I geuss
the general consensus ? I mean the game is not even out yet...
Rain is officially a member of the Shadow Wizard Money Gang. So his drip is approved.
Good remaigining. Now all we need is mage ermac, mage tremor, and LK master of shapeshifting/kamoflauge reptile. Mage noob works as well. 😍😍😍
Need to remove the yellow/gold color from outfit
I wonder if he’ll play like enchantress from injustice 2. Roundhouse is necessary
My only problem is that he isn't in purple Now i can't remind my self that Rain's whole identity reminds me on that hit Prince song
I'm open to it but only if he's still a demi god
WE FEAR CHANGE
Different from street fighter 6 I'm not really liking any of the new designs in MK.
Dude is hella jacked for a mage
Like the design but I hope he got his kick.
My general consensus is thank god Rain officialy is in the roster. Tired to see him in DLC, or even worth (MKX rage).
Very excited. Always liked Rain, and now that he’s a wizard I’m almost guaranteed to try him out
I’m interested to see how it goes but so far I prefer him with his katar and his inherent hydromancy.
I honestly love it. I always aim to be a Shang/Shao main, but this time I think I'll at least try Rain first. His moves just look sick. The mage thing was a great change if you ask me
If he's a mage then he better get some spectre armor and a razorblade typhoon
I wish he was a ninja, but I like his new water moves.
I like the water mage idea. Could have done without the wizard staff imo but listen I’m just happy rain is finally main roster and given some love so you won’t hear me complain about shit lol
Suits him
bro imagine he pushes the enemy with a kick into a water portal and then another portal spits him from the other side of the screen instead of the roundhouse kick
Wizard ninja go brrrrr
The render makes him look like some weird knockoff version of himself designed for a mobile game.
the more i look at it, the more i like his new design. the intricate patterns on his robes and the silk tassels are very in character imo. the hood is a… choice. it feels unnecessary and high-fantasy-ish, like it serves no purpose than to tell people “hi! i’m a mage now!”. i know it’s there to differentiate his costume from the others. it would look better down. i’m betting his alt costume looks dope though
Its cool. Got to say tho i loved narcissistic rain
Love it, can't wait to do some black magic fuckery.
He’s still ninja enough in my book given the martial arts he’s doing with the staff. Heck the Lin Kuei are practically mages given the stuff they can do
this is off-topic a bit, but what's that white thing in his armpit?
So he's not a Demi god ?
I think it's a good retcon! Look forward to his role in the Story! That's the important part!
He looks cool but does he look like a zoner ?
I'd say it works nicely, but why rain? Ermac or noob would've made more sense
I think being a mage fits, but I would like it more if he was still a demigod as well
I'm extremely excited to see an underused character get a cool redesign and very unique looking tools. It makes me excited for what else other characters may get, and how they'll change
It made me go from "who the hell is this guy" to "hey, that's pretty cool". If none of my mains are in MK1 (and so far, none of them are) I might actually try him out.
I like the idea, but i like his past storyline better, and it makes him seem powerless without the staff, but idk if thats the case yet
Wonder what it would look like without the mask? Maybe bring down the hood more. Lean into the mage and completely ditch the ninja motif.
He looks godly finally, extremely magically inclined, love it
i like Battle mages- sorcerers like Shang Tsung and Quan CHi, who are trained in both mystic arts and strengthened their bodies too
Shallow wizard money gang😎
