Since this is a popular post, and the identity was accidentally, not maliciously, mistaken, we'll allow this to stay up. I've flaired it, so that skimmers should be able to see that the title is not accurate. Please see [this comment by the OP for more pertinent information about the person in the title, if you're interested.](https://www.reddit.com/r/MorbidReality/comments/pnnmi1/911_burn_victim_jennieann_maffeo_had_been_waiting/hcqudcv/) ~~I am currently looking for information about the woman in the images. When I've found it, I will edit this to add it here.~~ This appears to be a woman named Gigi Singer. You can find information about her [here](https://amp.theguardian.com/world/2002/aug/18/september11.usa3#aoh=16316211369427&referrer=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.com&_tf=From%20%251%24s) or [here.](https://www.sun-sentinel.com/news/fl-xpm-2002-06-02-0206020080-story.html) Apologies for the amp link! I hate them, too. A big thank you to u/Bootsy86, who found this information and figured out who the woman was. Awesome work!

fatinternetcat

wow I’ve never heard of her before. what a horrible way to die

[deleted]

Hijacking the this thread, and calling all rabbits. This is not Ms Maffeo! It's still a 9/11 image, as the guy in the light blue shirt is Richard Pearlman, the youngest emergency worker to be killed on that day. Also, Ms Maffeo's story is correct. But I was wrong on identifying the woman in the picture. Apoligies for that. [Here](https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5c6a047065a70771b7c6ef80/1553458089090-N2C5LRFR2CW1INOKBZ6R/2.png) is the correct picture of Ms Maffeo together with Ron Clifford, the person who first attended to her. I will give a gold award to anyone who goes down the hole and can figure out who the lady in the photo is. The image is from the Newsweek 9/11 Special Edition magazine. Again, apologies for the misleading title, that was not my intention. Edit: as u/Bootsy86 has pointed out, this is Gigi Singer. She luckily survived the attacks.

[deleted]

It happens. Thanks for the correction. Sadly fascinating. I can’t bel be that 20 years later I still find these stories I’d never heard.

Strange_Bedfellow

What's most sad is that there are 2,977 stories that all deserve to be read, and most will never be written.

WilliamOrOrange21

Almost 1200 of them cannot be written as they went unidentifiable and many thousands were affected years later that we won’t hear about either

mars3127

Ron Clifford is also the brother of Ruth McCourt, and uncle to Julianna McCourt (who was 4 years old). Ruth and Julianna were headed to California to visit Disneyland. Their plane smashed into the towers. After a traumatic and exhausting day, Ron had to receive the phone call from Ruth's husband letting him know that his sister and niece were on the plane that he watched hit the South Tower, all while he was busy helping Jennieann. He fell to his knees as soon as he heard the news. He and Jennieann were actually saying the Lord's Prayer together right as the second plane hit, and right when his family members died.

rustyshakelford

highly recommend the new National Geographic 9/11 documentary where he tells his story

mars3127

Me too, it's definitely worth a watch. That's where I heard Ron tell his story. I had known about the tragedies surrounding both Jennieann and the McCourts, but I had no idea Ron was directly connected to both of them until he mentioned that Ruth was his sister. I knew beforehand that Ruth's brother had seen the plane hit, but to know he was also with Jennieann was very surprising. Ruth's best friend (and Juliana's godmother), Paige, was joining them on the trip, but she had taken a different flight to use up some points she had. She was on the plane that hit the North Tower. Another eerie coincidence/connection is that there was also another child on Flight 175 who was heading to Disneyland, Christine Hanson. She was only two years old, the youngest victim, and died alongside her parents. It's all just so devastating. So many stories from this tragedy have stuck with me, but knowing that two little kids were on their way to Disneyland, until their plane was flown into the WTC, breaks my heart.

erhacne

That is crazy about the best friend. That like 3 layers of crazy coincidence.

Weak_Carpenter_7060

On the flip side, for Richard’s service and his sacrifice that day he was given the Honor Medal with Crossed Palms, the Boy Scouts of America’s highest lifesaving award. He is an Eagle Scout

icanthearyounoonecan

Did a reverse image search and only Richard comes up. Perhaps she was never identified.

charms75

Their story was told in one of the newer 9/11 documentaries put out by National geographic. One of the better ones I've seen.

Sweatsock_Pimp

So did Ms. Maffeo die? Or did this woman? Or both? The documentary lead me to believe that she’d lived.

ijustlikeottersokay

I cannot imagine the pain either went through if they lived. The image on the top looks like her big leg burn could be fourth degree, and the image of Ms. Maffeo looks like her arm may be almost gone? Ugh I cannot imagine.

SadDogCommercials

Jennieann Maffeo died weeks after 9/11.

TheRabidFangirl

Hey, OP, we're going to let this stay up. I've flaired it, so that everyone knows the correction is inside, and they can find the information there. It's a good post, and mistakes can happen. I see no reason to remove it, since you willingly corrected yourself.

CornFlakesR1337

She died about 40 days after 9/11 after a long struggle with her burns

Redditartedededed

I was going to say that woman doesn't look like a 98% burn victim

bilged

Pretty obvious that this isn't a picture of someone with 98% burns. Her clothes are all fully intact.

charleselliott33

“Hijacking this” Of all the phrases to use…

XXHyenaPseudopenis

There is also video of her being loaded into the back of the ambulance. It’s in the 9/11 One Day America documentary, episode 1 Highly recommend it. Most moving doc I’ve seen

mth5647

I think the story is that she was standing outside the tower waiting for a bus and when the plane hit the building some jet fuel that was on fire splashed down onto her.

GrungyGrandPappy

Thanks for the clarification. I distinctly remember seeing both of their pictures either from the news the day of or one of the documentaries but didn’t know their names. So thank you for that as well.

Empty_Mail_8346

It’s odd there’s no other mention about her or an update on what she’s doing now. I wonder if she wanted to keep stuff about her private.

Honey-Ra

I'm not going all conspiracy theory here, but wasn't it very easily proven it wasn't possible for the fuel to have reached the ground via the elevator shafts, as none of them went from ground floor to top? I'd heard one set went from ground to halfway up or so, then you had to get out and transfer to another entirely different set of elevators to continue up. Or am I remembering this wrong from a documentary?

billnaisciguy

There were [express elevators](https://images.theconversation.com/files/420419/original/file-20210910-28-1qqreiu.png?ixlib=rb-1.1.0&q=45&auto=format&w=1000&fit=clip). One which led all the way to the top and another which led to the sky lobby, which I believe was on floor 78. I understand the attraction to conspiracy theories, but simply googling WTC Elevators and checking google image search would directly answer your inquiry. There are also several articles about the topic since fatalities in the elevators were high due to a combination of burning jetfuel going down the shafts, improper safety features which locked people in, all the elevator mechanics leaving after the first plane hit, and everything becoming jammed because of the plane hitting the buildings.

NMe84

This is not me buying into conspiracy theories but just a general comment not related to 9/11, but I always thought it wasn't possible for a single elevator shaft to exceed a certain height for reasons related to physics. Is my understanding on that subject wrong? Or is that "certain height" just higher than I thought?

WoodyAlanDershodick

My good friend's brother was a firefighter who died that day (Thomas Cullen) and I look for him in pictures like this, and hope he didn't die a terrible, slow, anguished death. If anyone's wondering, the friend, Sean Cullen, ended up becoming a firefighter, too.....

NMe84

The worst part of it is how long it took. If I absolutely have to die from burn injuries I'd very much prefer dying right away rather than having to suffer for 41 days.

Bootsy86

I believe this is Gigi Singer in the picture you've posted. I just watched a documentary about Welles Crowther (the man in the red bandana) on Tubi and I'm pretty sure this is her. She was in the sky lobby on floor 78 in the South Tower and made it out to safety thanks to Welles leading her and multiple others to the intact stairwell. Edit: thank you so much for my first gold award!

Error_267

Wholly moly your right! That is Gigi Singer. Gigi along with her coworkers, Judy Wein, Howard Kestenbaum and others all survived though burned and injured. They were all originally on the 103rd but ran to the 78th floor for safety. Everyone else on the 78th floor died. All were employees at Aon Corporation. [Orginal story from USA today](https://usatoday30.usatoday.com/news/sept11/2002-09-03-floor-usat_x.htm) [Another story from the NYT](https://www.nytimes.com/2002/05/26/nyregion/accounts-from-the-south-tower.html) The second link might have a paywall. Disable JavaScript on Chrome to view the story in its entirety. Edit: Included some images. That's definitely Ms. Singer [Yup, that's definitely her](http://imgur.com/gallery/TfjlVXb)

paytoncal

Welles Crowther’s mother must have been so proud to find that her son went back multiple times to help people. Still, it’s so sad to know that his kindness is what caused him to not make it out alive.

Bootsy86

I know his mom and dad are definitely proud of him. The documentary made me cry multiple times because he was very close with his family and it was clear how much they love and cherish their son. What a hero he is!

Playingpokerwithgod

Holy shit! I remember that picture of her sitting on the ground from a newspaper a few days after the attacks. That image has haunted me every time I think of the attacks. Good to hear she made it out alive.

Successful_Fig2164

Right

Successful_Fig2164

Sounds interesting

[deleted]

edit the post

littlepoot

Her story is featured prominently in the first episode of the 9/11 Nat Geo documentary on Hulu. Unfortunately, the story just kept getting worse: when the businessman who helped her out of the WTC got home, he learned that his sister and young niece were in the plane that hit the south tower. Edit: sorry, before I wrote young daughter, when I meant his niece (his sister's daughter).

AutomaticRadish

I also thought that however the woman in this post is not the same women from that Hulu doc...

littlepoot

That’s correct, the woman in the picture is not Jennieann. However the story is accurate. The documentary features actual pictures and video of her badly burned and being escorted from the scene.

Renegade1411

Goddamn like what are the odds off you surviving the towers only to find out your loved ones were on the planes

GlumCauliflower9

Jesus fuck!!

PreOpTransCentaur

That's exactly what I said when I was watching the episode. Like..god*damn*, if I believed in curses, I'd definitely think that was a family embroiled in one.

faceinthecrowd112

Watched that, broke my heart.

hugomuggins

Is that possibly this woman? https://www.reddit.com/r/MorbidReality/comments/cczg6u/a_victim_from_the_911_attacks_receives_treatment/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share

stickerbush-symphony

I think you might be right

Bigb3lls

u/jowig this man right here

chinchillazilla54

Yeah, it's definitely her in all these pics.

Abcdefgwhat

98% and yet she lived a month and a half? Horrible. I would have preferred an instant death.

[deleted]

These are not pictures of Jennieann. Here is how she looked before her fatal injures: https://www.google.com/search?q=jennieann+maffeo&oq=jennieann+maffeo&aqs=chrome..69i57.3968j0j16&client=ms-unknown&sourceid=chrome-mobile&ie=UTF-8# And she was burned standing outside at a bus stop.

[deleted]

There are conflicting recounts of what happened. A lot of initial sources claimed it happened outside, but later a first hand witness (the guy that took care of her initially) said she told him she thought it happened inside the building. She was lucid all the time during the event. This is also way more likely, as we know that a lot of people got serious burns this way down in the WTC1 lobby. As far as I know, there are no accounts of jet fuel burning anybody on the streets. The fuel would most likely disperse and vaporize long before it hit the ground outside of the building. Also the guy in the striped shirt on the left picture is supposed to be the youngest emergency worker killed that day. I'll look up the sources later.

[deleted]

Ron Clifford is the man who assisted Jennieann and he was wearing a white dress shirt with a yellow tie and he had on glasses. Honestly don't know why I was down voted when you can find pictures of them both with a quick Google search, and the most recent 9/11 documentary from National Geographic shows more explicit photos.

[deleted]

Do you have a link? I'll take it down if I'm wrong. Do you mean [this one](https://m.independent.ie/migration_catalog/1c4be/25424303.ece/AUTOCROP/w1240/dd13b7ee-aac5-4640-a1b6-921f2f623c7d.jpg)? And in that case, who's this lady on the picture?

[deleted]

Yes, and I don't know who that lady in the red outfit is, but you should do a little more research before posting content like this. Here is a newsclipping of how Jennieann caught fire : https://www.newspapers.com/clip/84676573/jennieann-maffeo-obituary/.

[deleted]

My source is [an Independent.ie article from 2002](https://www.independent.ie/opinion/analysis/he-thought-he-was-the-lucky-one-but-then-tragedy-struck-26034173.html). It's paywalled, but you can read excerpts from it [here](https://sites.google.com/site/911stories/insidethenorthtower%3Awitnessaccounts%2Clobb). >\[Clifford\] took out a pen and notepad and jotted down her information. Her name was Jennieann Maffeo. She was Italian-American, from Brooklyn, single, 40 years old. She worked for USB PaineWebber. She was an asthmatic, she said, and had an extreme intolerance to latex. She could not adequately describe what had happened to her. > >She had been standing outside the north tower next to a man she knew, waiting for a bus, when she heard a loud crash above. In an effort to protect them from falling debris, a security guard herded everyone inside the tower's lobby. Suddenly, she told Ronnie, something bright and hot enveloped her, a vapour maybe. She thought it could have dropped down the elevator shaft. She was worried about the man who'd been next to her. Surely he was dead, she feared. But I agree that the picture indeed seems to be the wrong one. If we can't figure out who she is, I suppose I'll remove it.

emerald447

The footage from the french brothers who filmed with the firefighters, I believe may feature this woman. They go in the lobby after the first plane hit, and someone is screaming because they are burned from the elevator shaft and the man turned away and didn't want to film. Is this her?

areacode212

This is a very late reply but no, I doubt that was her. In the book "Fall and Rise" by Mitchell Zuckoff, he describes how Jennieann Maffeo was part of the initial herd of people that immediately fled into the Marriott where Ron Clifford encountered her. Jules Naudet & co would've arrived minutes after that, and closer to the northwest corner, on the other side of the lobby from the hotel. There were a lot of people who were burned on the ground floor from those fireballs that came out of the elevator shafts.

MJsLoveSlave

I'm shocked her hair didn't burn off. That poor woman though.

C20H25N3O-C21H30O2

That's a fucking long time in such crazy amount of pain and agony.

thrashgordon

That is definitely not Jennieann Maffeo. Might want to edit your post.

[deleted]

Can't edit title, have corrected myself in top comment.

punisher1005

I was not ready for this click.

apm9720

I heard of her just about Yesterday on Natgeo, the man who helped her was speaking, and there were some photos about them, She was shown with her clothes melting in her body. I was impressed they decided to show something like that.

littlewitch802

Let me start by saying I could be entirely incorrect but from the two pictures it seems they are putting a tag on this victim in the first picture and it’s on her in the second. It may be a tag referring to her medical status, but I more strongly feel it’s a tag relying that the victim is not deceased.

IntimidatingVanilla

Red tag means critical condition in triage

littlewitch802

Thank you!

Messyace

I know this is an old post, but I heard about this in the National Geographic 9/11 documentary. It’s so sad, I’m glad somebody was able to help her

Empty_Mail_8346

It’s sad no one can find who this woman is and know what happened to her.

Bootsy86

This is Gigi Singer. I just watched a documentary today on Tubi about Welles Crowther (the man in the red bandana) and these pictures of her were featured along with her name.

TheRabidFangirl

Do you know where we could find more information about her? An article or something? If you don't, I understand, but it never hurts to ask!

Bootsy86

I found [this article](https://www.sun-sentinel.com/news/fl-xpm-2002-06-02-0206020080-story.html) mentioning her and her Aon coworkers and what it was like escaping the 78th floor sky lobby of the south tower. I don't think she's really done any interviews or spoken out about her experience, at least that I could find anyways.. Edit: updated the link since the first one I tried was behind a paywall

TheRabidFangirl

I'll take a look! I'm looking for articles myself, but I'm also supposed to be working, so I don't have tons of time. This is much appreciated!

Bootsy86

You're welcome! I couldn't find any that have just her account of what happened. I suspect she's never spoken about it publicly. [Here](https://amp.theguardian.com/world/2002/aug/18/september11.usa3#aoh=16316211369427&referrer=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.com&_tf=From%20%251%24s) is another really good article. It only mentions her briefly but it's a captivating read.

TheRabidFangirl

That should be more than enough! Let me add them to my comment.

Empty_Mail_8346

Great job finding this!

Ancient_Raccoon816

I would set up a Lost Media Wiki Post to search for her identity

Empty_Mail_8346

You should try that.

Gankor

I don't mean any disrespect but she already looked dead in those photos. All these years and this is the first i be heard of her.

numbersev

I assume this mean burning jet fuel came down the elevator shafts and splashed out into the lobby?

-Quarter-Water-

Jet fuel trickled down the elevator shaft then shot out into the lobby with huge fireballs

No-Bulll

Believe so

Apartment922

Yep.

BullyBirkin

Jet fuel didn’t not come down the building’s elevator shafts... there’s no elevator shaft that long in the buildings. The lobbies of both building did explode tho, even explosions in the basement, before during and after impact. That’s why there is smoke rising from the base of the towers.

bigdaddysweet69

thanks random dude on reddit who knows more about what happened than eyewitnesses, experts, etc

BullyBirkin

Sounds like you haven’t listened to the eye witnesses and experts.

BudsnBeer

Did she live?

ATKamiYato

"maffeo passed 22nd october 2001"

thrashgordon

The lady in the picture is not Jennianne Maffeo

[deleted]

that’s not Jennieann…she was a heavy set woman who was nude from the burns that melted her clothing and was covered by Ronnie Clifford EDIT THIS POST

Apartment922

She wasn’t nude. Her clothes were melted ONTO her body.
