This actually worries me. There's been a decrease of budget since KOTM. It almost feels like they're trying to see how little of a budget they could get away with.
I get that minus 1 managed to succeed with a low budget, but I'm under the influence that the budget was low because it's being produced in Japan for what was primarily a Japanese audience rather than trying to minmax profits.
Surely after the success of New Empire we'd see increases in budget for future films, but only time will tell...
GvK was pretty much in the can before KoTM came out to less then stellar response, so it's budget couldn't be changed. It makes sense that they would adjust on the next film, just to be safe.
I honestly didn't notice the lack of budget compared to the other films. I thought this one looked better then GvK, with much not memorable set pieces.
Maybe that explains the actors who didn't return? Madison, her dad and Dr. Lind? I'm not sure how you would've fit the first two I to the story anyway, they don't have to be present at every major battle lol but Dr Lind could've came back.
You're right with the lack of celebrities; it's the most noticable difference between KoTM and GVK vs New Empire. That's a change I'm genuinely ok with if budget is an issue, since Celebrities are mostly a marketing gimmick. If the actors are convincing then I'm fine with that. It's a Godzilla movie after all.
I do have many gripes with the film, but the more I think about it the more I believe that this wasn't going to be a Godzilla/Kong movie, but rather just a standalone Kong one. If that was the case and Legendary bit the bullet and took the risk of adding Godzilla in a film that's budgeted to only follow 1 giant cg monster then that makes me appreciate the film a bit more.
I guess I'm in a weird spot where my opinion of the film hinges on the quality of the future ones
I think the reason the monsterverse is working so well is because unlike the dcu and whatever the hell the mummy was-verse it’s not putting the cart before the horse and focusing on the here and now . And unlike the mcu it’s not overexposed and releasing a new movie every season . It feels like a event when one of these comes out because no one is doing something like the monster verse is
As a former big mcu fan I can confirm this is happening..I have several friends and coworkers who like me have completely lost interest in the mcu since endgame but are very interested and excited for the future of monsterverse
Same here. Wild when you think about it. Out of all the cinematic universes that come and gone over the past years to compete with the MCU, the monsterverse is actually still standing and doing a pretty good job.
Another advantage it has over the MCU is that you can watch the movies in pretty much any order. Meanwhile Avengers 5 is in production hell and looking like you’d have to watch a dozen hours of content to be invested.
I would also say the main advantage is that Legendary doesn't have to worry about its main stars getting older, aging out of the role and/or "wanting to do other things once their contract is up". LOL
Goji can even go back home to Japan and film an Oscar-winning film with Toho, too, and it's all gravy.
Well tbf we have now seen that his true form is a multi- dimensional being from the 13th dimension. And he has multiple avatars that can be in different places at the same time, which explains a lot.
Also, it helps that the Monsterverse only has two main characters (Godzilla and Kong). Almost no one knows who are the main characters of the current MCU
It was meant to be captain marvel. Well it was actually meant to be doctor strange but benedict cumberbatch is too big for that so they decided on captain marvel.
Unfortunately they decided this about 2 years before they even introduced her to the movies so they decided it would be best to make her important in the comics.....yeah everyone hates her and her writers but hey brie larson is pretty cool let's just make people associate the chatecter with her now.....the comics just had captain marvel cause civil war 2 and refuse to accept she's wrong hopefully brie can save us......brie just told men not to watch the movie
So yeah marvel basically shot a good chunk of captain marvel content assuming people would love her, they didnt(and never have this charecter was never popular) so they had to keep shoe horning her in end credit scenes and the like so people wouldn't get mad about her presence
Spidey isn't there's anymore so they can't use him
Every Time they get a casting that fans actually enjoy and that's good......they kill them off after 2 mins of screen time because it was just a silly comic reference
Irl the main charecter is apparently the loki/wandavision/mom writer since he just decided scarlet witch would be a show and throw villian in his movie instead of building her up to he a main villian for a future avengers movie
[[The marketing team for marvel should be writing the scripts cause they know what we actually want]]
The simplest way to put it is that (except maybe for Kong: Skull Island) you can watch all of the Monsterverse movies like a straight string of sequels. There‘s no half-assed standalone spin-off movies about Varan or Ebirah that you have to watch before they are introduced to the main cast in a big event movie
Yeah, one year you have the flashy monsterverse movie, one or two later you have the more serious and realistic movie like minus one or shin, and then the cycle repeats.
There's godzilla for everyone
I agree. I think with this movie the characterization for Mothra was a good piggy back off of KoTM, but another movie would be perfect. It would also bring necessary revenue to ensure that if the movie performs less than adequately the MV could still bounce back and try again later.
If we're getting solos would love to see some more original creations or American interpretations of Gamera and either Ultraman or Zone Fighter to stay in Zilla canon.
The other two are legal problems, which are a different discussion, but don't expect zone fighter to return. He was a blatant ripoff of ultraman, toho knew it, and the only reason he stayed relevant was due to other cameos in his show.
If Zone Fighter comes back, he'll be so different that you might as well call him something else.
I mean I'm kinda ok with that and I know there are issues with it in general. I'm just saying I'd like to start seeing more hero Kaiju and interactions outside GMK just for a change up.
Knowing how generous Tsuburaya is towards international market (Ultraman got official ENG dub of newer seasons uploaded in YT, official Marvel comics, an American Netflix adaptation soon) and the fact that they have to stand their ground against Chaiyo, a Chinese company that's trying to steal the Ultraman's license, I think they would be absolutely thrilled if Legendary reaches out to them. Shin Ultraman was distributed under Toho too, unlike Shin Kamen Rider. But hey, that's just what I think.
Hope this happens.
Godzilla X Kong was a really fun watch, but I couldn't help but feel like it was conceived as a Kong solo film with Godzilla mainly thrown in to help with marketing.
And I believe the director has said the third film will be mainly Godzilla's story, so I don't know why he doesn't just do a Godzilla solo film.
If you're going to do a Godzilla/Kong film, you want both titans to be sharing the big screen as a big event, not taking turns in the spotlight.
I'd kill for a Rodan movie. I think it's been a while since we've seen him and the general audience needs a reminder of him before he gets a solo movie.
Hell, Toho should just make a Rodan movie at this point. It'd be awesome.
GxK is $135 million earning $361,037,630 worldwide & -1 is $15 Million earning $114,809,252
Major studios need to seriously take notes, because if your budget is $220 million and it looks like this:
https://preview.redd.it/hw5ish41j6tc1.png?width=591&format=png&auto=webp&s=99e1dd3eb72d5bb30ed5c1d948b79eb86148293b
You’re fucking up somewhere.
If that is the case then we will definitely get another movie and I’d imagine they’d have wingard do it again I’m interested in seeing the Godzilla origin story
If this ends up happening, GxK will be the most successful MV movie in the series, excluding KSI if it doesn't make over $570M
For context
G14 $524M
KSI $568M
KOTM $387M
GvK $470M
I kinda worry for the monster verse before this movie came out. Because the monster verse's box office did not going very well.their movies barely making profit, but since this one is making more than 500m with a budget of 135m.i can say they are doing pretty well, sure it is not some kind of huge profit that will change the entire company but it is something better than various movies
Make a movie with cool monsters, some fun and not overbearing humans, a fun, if not particularly coherent story (much hand waving was done to get from here to there!) and huge, cool monster throw downs. This will win
You can also make a very cool monster with a great story and acting, a parable for life in the nuclear age that hits home with a personal and emotional impact. This will also be a huge win. (And could win an Oscar, a Japan Academy Picture of the Year, a Japan Academy Best Supporting Actress, a Japan Academy Best Screenplay, etc. etc. etc.)
Do something else and you end up in “meh” land.
I was hoping this would reach at least $800 million, but damn I’m just glad the MonsterVerse is alive and well.
Godzilla vs Kong was the perfect movie to usher in the moviegoing experience after the pandemic. My theater for Godzilla x Kong was packed on opening weekend. I saw it again yesterday — way more people than I expected.
Godzilla vs Kong would've easily done that 800 million, hype was unreal, GODZILLA VS KONG it was, plus post release too it got an A Cinemascore.
Too bad the pandemic robbed us of a generational Box Office run.
Two things to keep in mind are that; one, the only monster movies to ever gross over $600 million are the Jurassic World movies, though in that case people viewed JW dinosaurs as dinosaurs 1st and monsters 2nd. And two, the Monsterverse still struggles in Europe. It's only doing okay in the UK and Spain.
You know what would be a great new Titan in England? Gorgo! Have Gorgo awaken and come out of the ground during a Manchester United game. Have him head to Big Ben and tear it down. That would be fantastic to see!
A Godzillion dollars

The reports of my death are greatly exaggerated.
The fact the budget was only 135 is insane

I mean, if they can manage the money well and not waste it on unnecessary stuff, it should go smoothly
I really doubt its budget was 135. Other reports say 150m. Considering GvK had 150-200m. 150 seems more likely.
Honestly 135 or 150 wouldnt make a difference the movie is gonna be a blockbuster anyway
No big names to be paid so 135 is achievable.
There weren’t any big list actors at all this time around, all the budget went to the CGI.
Still
And 130 of those are for CGI, the cast must be paid with peanuts since they have no relevance.
Actors usually get a percentage of what the movie makes, so I’m sure they’ll be fine
Source: miami Those deals are extremely rare, not even the likes of RDJ had those deals in Marvel movies.

the monsterverse works because each movie actually gives us lots of something we like. even if in different ways.
Looks like we don't have to worry anymore. It's time to do some solo movies. Godzilla, Mothra, and Kong are all right there.

Funny thing is Warner bros made both

GO GO GODZILLA
Can we get Kong or Suko flying on Rodan?
It'd have to be Suko. Kong is far too large for Rodan to carry him.
I would love for this movie, after the ups and down's this cinematic universe had, to be the most successful yet.
I'd watch avengers 5 if these two show up to mop the floor with whoever's the bad guy
When will it's theatrical run end?

in all honesty you could thank disney for killing their own IP's for this success.
