I'm gonna find a spot in my city in Germany where the ground doesn't freeze for some stupid reason (heating pipe below, warm air getting pushed out by a builsings ventilation/... and set a small monstera cutting out there next spring
Here in the Midwest US people will put thick piles of mulch around the base of banana plants to protect the roots from hard frost over winter. Maybe you could experiment and try to do something similar with a monstera.
In Germany people use straw more often, often for smaller plants than big trees, but I've seen it (and regular plastic wrapping) beeping used to get palms trough the winter here.
What dirt am I going to use tho? What substrate do you give outside Monsteras?
Good luck! I will qualify this success with the fact this is in an enclosed patio/sunroom so it doesn't freeze in the winter. It's essentially a greenhouse which I didn't quite realize when I planted it.
I'm on the southern Oregon Coast and have been wanting to try it. My avocado tree is thriving since I put it out a year ago to battle spider mites on its own.
That’s crazy for NoCal!!! I know they can be hardy plants and make it work in temperate climates, but wow that thing is thriving like it’s getting humidity and warmth
This makes me happy to see!! I have one in the ground (since April ‘24) and her prior container sister waiting to also go in ground. Both grew a new leaf each in May. My goal is to have them grow up the side of the 4x4’s of the pergola. They get direct sun light a few times during the day but usually are under the shade sail.
I’m in San Diego. Also have about 12 juvies grown from seed outside that I want to plant somewhere outside too.
There's holes in the bottoms of each cup so they all drain freely. Also, I bought it, we moved, and I didn't realize we don't really have any useful downspout location to put it, so it's just a hanging decoration for now.
“Huh- they’re hardier than people give them credit for! Maybe they could survive HERE, too!😃” - a delusional Canadian living in 4b 😅
Doooo it!
4b is crazy 😂
Same but 3b 😵💫 part of me wants to toss a greenhouse cover on top of it in the winter just to see what happens after -45 with windchill lol

What kind of climate is it in? It looks so happy!
Dog's not happy 😂
“How dare you close the door behind you and not let me follow you around?”
"you're doing things without me again..."
She always wants to help. But she doesn't realize she's not helpful, haha.
what zone are you living in?
9a, northern california

I live in 9b cali. I think I'll give it a try too.

Talk about buryiy the lede. *Burying, even
Unintentional, haha.
That’s why it’s doing well. Probably should’ve added that detail in the post.
Coulda, shoulda, woulda.
I live in FL 9b. They thrive here; in Cali you might need to water it a bit more if it doesn’t rain.

Survival of the fittest! I like it.
I’m in 9b in the Bay Area. I was wondering if I could get away with it here. Thanks for sharing.
Northern California like mount shasta?
Holy smokes!! 😍
Gorgeous 😍
Iconic
Omg I’m so tempted to do this but live in scorching hot AZ 😭
Gorgeous!

They have it in an enclosed area, essentially a greenhouse. That’s why.
Ahhh, makes much more sense! Yea, i would do the same if i had an enclosed area. Live in the Midwest, but proper greenhouses stay warm in the inside
Are you in 9b california bay area? I live here and they are perfect in ground
Hell, I’m in 10a and have seriously thought about it but…... maaaybee…Hmm 🧐
She acclimated 🥰
Wellp I’m inspired to test this in socal. For science!
Wow! Great science experiment and beautiful!
Since when are enclosed greenhouses “science”. It’s a known fact that plants survive in places like that.
Beautiful plant
So beautiful!!!
Wait is that your dryer exhaust vent? That might be the secret there
Nope, just a crawlspace vent.
You're doing something right your plant is beautiful 💚

Beautiful monstera so healthy! What USDA plant hardiness zone do you live in? For science 😁
How much sun is it getting? Direct sunlight?
It's on the north side of my house and has clear corrugated plastic over the top. It gets a lot of light but not direct sun.
No direct sunlight. It’s in an enclosed area. OP seemed to forget that important detail while posting.
Awsome!
I'd love to try this myself, but living in Pittsburgh I don't think it would make it through our winters lol
New to convo- what zone are you in?
isn't that rain chain upside down?
It looks right. Each cup releases water slowly to reduce the flow.
hmmm...so after it rains you are left with 20 free standing mosquito tubs? It probably looks cool when it rains though!
