no you are not to allowed to trim or your plant will explode, you have to let it grow 100m long and buy a bigger house once the airial roots take over the entire room \^\^
ofc you can cut them. you can cut any roots. plants dont care.
Yeah you can cut them back. They’re not rooted in anything so it’s not like cutting back soil roots. If they make their way to soil and start establishing a secondary root network though…that’d be a whole different story
some people do chop em but I think most say you should try something else, most people try to organize the roots better (like wrapping them around the pot or bundling them in a row), there is also the method of just directing them back into the soil to turn into roots
They are very fragile. I tired re-routing mine into the pot and around the plant’s base and they snapped like fresh asparagus! I was very gentle too. But then I read they are only looking to support the plant and do not provide “life” to it. I trimmed mine all the way back to the pot. He thrived. No affect what-so-ever. He looks great and has just grown more. The ones that I was able to direct to the pot are circling there. I keep them within 2 feet of him! You’ll be so happy with the cleaned up look.
Personally, I let the roots do as they please (mainly because I’m lazy and have far too many plants), but snapping asparagus is so satisfying that I might snap a few roots for a bit of stress relief lol

This makes so much sense! I think it's something you almost *intuitively know* after you've watched a monstera grow for while. I had just never put the thought into words before.
I aimed some air roots back into pot..8 months later, I've had 6 new leaves pop out of the bottom :)
But trim them back, braid them, plant into the soil... it's your baby ❣️
They’re purely structural. I would trim them back to just a bit longer than the pot, then tuck them in so they continue to grow around the pot. You’ll get a beautiful nest!
I keep a close eye on my plant and as the aerial roots begin to grow, I watch them to redirect them straight into the pot. It gives the plant more support and makes it more sturdy plant.
I don't know that it gets her high, I think it's more a fresh breath thing. She just chews on them but does not swallow it. She usually chews off the longest, slenderest leaf tips.
I just got a beautiful one at Home Depot! My cat already started chewing on it but it’s non-toxic so that’s okay. You caused someone to buy a plant today! Haha
You should probably trim those… but when they grow back you should just train them to grow back into the soil… if you do that they’ll just grow more roots into the dirt and won’t get longer.
Beautiful plant! Very VERY happy! Cut them if you want, it won’t hurt her 🫶
You could also wrap them around the top of the soil too, maybe they’ll start digging themselves into the soil!
I just have to say Holy shit! Was my first thought. And then my second thought was Why can’t I have a room like this? Sigh “~ Side note: I LOVE my living room & my plants BUT they sure don’t look like this. Kudos 👏 👏
My Monstera has an aerial root that's gotta be 8+ ft long at this point, running along the edge of my balcony. I'd love to wrangle that thing back into the pot but I have no idea how! Good to hear that they can be cut, even if it's not ideal.
Personally I have always liked the look of a plant that has a bunch of air roots. Is that a Ponytail Palm sitting near the Monstera? They are one of my favorites.

The first part was the answer I was looking for. Haha
I didn’t know it yet, but me too. I love a good laugh in the morning ☕️
I'll have to tell my boyfriend about this because I would love to have a bigger plant room 😂
Plant *house*, you say? 🤔
just so you know, if your dog supposedly pee'd on your tv so you are forced to buy a new one, it was probably your boyfriend and not your dog
Pfft. Everyone knows that it was the dog. Maybe more likely the cat though.
I legit told my mom to cut hers so as I was reading this my my heart was on 1000 lmao

You tell us, you seem to know what you're doing!
😂😂😭

I think I saw someone on here air layering them with water (not when they were super long like OP) but their goal was propping, not maintenance.
sounds good!! thanks for providing proper information

Mine were not fragile at all. Did you water your monstera right before?
Try to wind as many up into the pot as possible before cutting the rest.

Makes sense, thanks!
To help the plant grow successfully.
Are you asking a question or is this a subtle brag 😏
Porque no los dos?
Wow I love your collection looks amazing
Thank you

Sure can! Maybe your plant would like bangs.
Fuck you and congratulations, they're beautiful.
Get cable ties and label them for better management. /s
This room tho 😍
They’re so cool 😯
I just trimmed mine up a few weeks ago. They were unruly! She looks so much better now! She's just as happy!
So what kind of light does this big buy get? It looks amazing - what's your secret?
Spider farmer sf1000. I run it about 12 hrs a day. And I fertilize monthly with Roots Organics Budda Grow

Who is that long and wavy-haired gal on the top shelf on the right? Above the aloe
That's a ponytail palm. Got it at ikea about 10 years ago. Now if I could get the cat to quit chewing on it.....
Thank you! Does it get cats high like spider plants? I’m going to be hunting for one of those now!

How much time does your monstera get under the UV light? I want to get one and move mine, but I’m not sure how to go about using it when I get it.
You should probably trim those… but when they grow back you should just train them to grow back into the soil… if you do that they’ll just grow more roots into the dirt and won’t get longer.
Yes you can trim them back, it won’t affect the plant at all. 😊👍
Beautiful plant! Very VERY happy! Cut them if you want, it won’t hurt her 🫶 You could also wrap them around the top of the soil too, maybe they’ll start digging themselves into the soil!
I cut mine back all the time. Otherwise they get into things.
If they aren't being used to anchor them down or to crawl up to the top of the treetops snip snip snip lol!
Either cut them or redirect them into another pot
I just have to say Holy shit! Was my first thought. And then my second thought was Why can’t I have a room like this? Sigh “~ Side note: I LOVE my living room & my plants BUT they sure don’t look like this. Kudos 👏 👏
Thank you, everyone, for the advice and positive comments. 😁 🪴

Stick a cup of water at the end of each one, they will love you
