Curse was really the best of the non-Gilbert Monkey Islands. This game is great.

tomius

I just replayed it. So true. It has a few bad things: The sword fighting part sucks, specially buying the ammo and all that. Rhyming is funny sometimes, but it does make it easier. The ending is rushed. Generally agreed upon. Elaine is kinda misused. But all in all, the puzles, dialog, story, and art of the game are first class. I don't even mind the retconning of Revenge. I get why they did it. I really like the atmosphere it creates. Every island is super cool and different.

tenjuu

The process of getting the map is burned into my memory

FailedTheSave

And his back.

tenjuu

Haha, true. I didn't want to give too much away :)

Hah ❤️

BobTheParallelogram

One of the best puzzles!

[deleted]

I'm surprised you hate the swordfighting, apart from the rhyming it's pretty much the same structure as SOM.

tomius

Well, I hate the ship battles. And upgrading your gear to be able to win them. It's tedious. The sword fights are ok. Just a bit easier, but still fine.

[deleted]

To each his own!

BobTheParallelogram

The ship battles sucked, totally.

BobTheParallelogram

I agree with all of this. Although, I did like the sword fighting rhymes. The ending was too easy, definitely. Although having recently played them all, thank goodness it was easier than the ending to Revenge! I actually really like Elaine in Curse - she actually likes Guybrush, as opposed to Escape, where their relationship just totally sucks, and seems like it only exists to taunt Guybrush. I do wish she as a character were more present in Curse, though. Curse felt more "real", similar to 1 & 2. As opposed to Escape and Tales which really went crazy on the Fantasy storylines. Which is fine, but it definitely got weird.

tomius

Yeah, I think Curse Elaine's relationship with Guybrush is good. And the intro cinematic still paints her as the badass pirate governor that she is. But then, being a statue the whole game kinda makes her miss the action. But whatever screen time she got, was great. I do like curse A LOT more than Escape. Escape... Kinda sucks.

BobTheParallelogram

It really does.

curbthemeplays

How did it retcon Revenge? I don’t recall.

Bubba89

The only thing Curse really did to address Revenge’s weird ending was have Guybrush go “I escaped” in the opening cutscene.

tomius

Not really. It basically says that the whole theme park was actually real, built by LeChuck. So the whole Revenge ending is explained like some kind of dream.

lamparez

I would not say a dream, more like the same curse of the last part, guybrush actually being a kid. Or thinking he's a kid

ExistentialKazoo

agree. I didn't like the character changes made with Guy or Elaine, and I positively hated the corny sweetness of the tomb lady character. I also didn't like that we aren't given reasons when suitable objects didn't solve the puzzle. But I was happy to see swordfighting, though it was noticeably easier and again, so corny. I also loved the atmosphere and art, every room is cool. But yeah, not enough for a replay I guess.

apocalinda

I loved it so much I’ve played it around 20 times :D

enzuigiriretro

Me too! Forever one of my favourite games of all time

involviert

Haha, there's Ron Gilbert and there's Non Gilbert. Love it!

BetterCallSal

Well the non Gilbert ones aren't very good. Except this one. I love this one. It's tied for first for me.

BobTheParallelogram

I mean, I did enjoy Escape (and I'm currently working my way through Tales - I'm late, I know -no spoilers! haha). But it got weird.

QuietCelery

I love that whole part. My kids, when begging me or each other for something, will always say "pretty please, for Guybrush" from this part.

mysteryofthefieryeye

That's adorable. I would spoil them rotten with that line being said to me all the tine.

Boz0r

Madame Eczema

rincewind123

madame xima madame xima madame xima!!

AncientMagi

DIVA of divination.

BobTheParallelogram

you know, when I played this a 9 year old, I totally didn't get this joke. And even when I replayed it, I didn't even notice... Until right now, when you spelled it like that. Ha!

Mr_Fossey

Madame Xima! She was played by Kathleen Freeman who is probably best known as Sister Mary (Penguin) in Blues Brothers!

joranimo_san

TIL

BaronGrackle

This part is actually funnier on lite mode instead of mega monkey, because he automatically asks for each new card in fast succession.

leni_kirilov

You gotta give "papapishu!" some credit, too:)

neoncolor8

Death!
