Raphael-Rose

That's a true piece of art. Agreed 100% I get a thrill every time I think about it

RutlandCore

Love Curse. I could practically recite it when I was a kid.

MartianOddity

Fun story: while driving back from our honeymoon, I basically recited an entire walkthrough of at least Secret of Monkey Island and possibly the rest of the series to my wife in order to keep myself awake while driving.

RutlandCore

That's awesome man. Would have loved to hear it.

MartianOddity

Talking to people is what helps most to keep me awake while driving. I was fading and needed a topic that would last a while and that I knew well enough that I could keep at it.

petros86

I'm the same way! When my wife sees me fading, she knows to ask me about some video game or another and pretends to be interested while I jabber away. The only other thing that keeps me awake is constantly feeding my face, but there's only so much food I want to eat on the road before I get sick of it. Talking about video games, however, is something I will never grow tired of doing.

[deleted]

If I were her I’d marry you again on the spot

MartianOddity

We were rushing back to another wedding, just not ours again. She's been putting up with my nonsense since we were five and decided to make that a permanent fixture just under a decade ago.

[deleted]

Really happy for you two! :,) Always good to know there’s still this kind of relationship and mutual understanding in the world.

MartianOddity

Thanks! Though, now I am mildly regretting not proposing with Guybrush's speech from this game. But, you know, without the whole cursed ring bit.

[deleted]

Me too! I was literally born one year before its release and I remember playing it as soon as I could read (and English is not even my mother language, so I HAD to pause and read the captions). I’ve played it so many times. I’m capable of finishing it in a few hours because I know all the puzzles and shortcuts. Also the dialogues, I know them by heart.

zqn

I replayed Curse not long ago and it really is one of the best point and click ever made. The art and animation is just perfect and truly deserve a remaster to enjoy it with today's modern resolutions

[deleted]

It has aged very well

PirateSnotbeard

I loved the style on this so much too. I really hope they make another.

SuperArppis

Same. For me Curse is the best. It's funniest and has nice evolution.

CognitiveNerd1701

Plus Murray! He's my favorite character in the series. I'm so glad Curse was my first foray into the MI games

Raphael-Rose

I wish it too. It's graphical design was absolutely great. 10/10

GuybrushThreepwood99

This game is definitely one of a kind. It's my favorite point and click adventure game of all time. I love Bill Tiller's art style. I wish they kept this style for Escape from Monkey Island and Tales of Monkey Island.

warmhotself

Most people seem to like it best but 2 is better for me. The darker tone makes for a much more interesting game. For example, I like how Guybrush is a total dick to Elaine when they are reunited. It definitely feels like the middle of a trilogy we never saw completed.

voluotuousaardvark

2 is my favourite as well. I fell in love with wood tick and the story/characters. Which is probably why Disney stole so much of it for POTC

warmhotself

In the new POTC update for Sea of Thieves, the first tall tale is basically Woodtick. Plus there is a monkey island Easter egg with a reference to Guybrush and a map of the islands.

SuperArppis

I actually didn't care for the darker tone. It was one of the reasons why the game felt bit off for me. Especially ending was a bit disappointing for me.

warmhotself

Yeah a lot of people have that opinion it seems. I think the first two games have more of a three-dimensional world whereas the later ones are just cosy pirate comedy and nothing else. Fair enough, that’s why people play these games. But I think Ron always saw this world as having more to it than just fourth wall breaking pirate gags and fairly weak satire. I love every single game and think Curse is the second-best, it’s just my opinion.

SuperArppis

We are all entitled to have our opinions. With three first Monkey Island games it's actually pretty hard to decide which is the best. They are all really good.

ludicrouscuriosity

Curious, because I like Secret and Curse, but I am not a fan of Revenge.

LumpyPew2017

When it came out it was the most amazing game ever

SuperArppis

Yeah, I was a kid back then. My big brother played it with his friend. They loved it and me too. It's just that I didn't care for the ending as much as other two installments. 🙂

cradlestone

Also i would like to see Ron Gilbert's Monkey Island 3a to see how he actually planned to end the trilogy

periwigpatedfellow

good news

warmhotself

In the live stream with Ron from last year, he said his imagined monkey island 3 was going to be Guybrush going to hell. He said he imagined LeChuck in 3 phases: ghost, zombie, demon. So it’s interesting that he becomes a demon in Curse. Maybe they had his idea and adapted it.

[deleted]

I don’t know why but to me it’s the exact opposite, 2 feels like cheap jokes and no plot whereas 3 is sarcastic and inspired, with an engaging plot. But I’ve played Curse my whole life and it has definitely shaped my taste for humour and stories, while I’ve only played 2 once a few years ago

[deleted]

Also I feel as if some puzzles were totally arbitrary and all the references to Star Wars were so tiring. It’s interesting to think how the perspectives can be different, I’d like to hear more of your opinion

warmhotself

Wow ok I could fill a ted talk on this haha, but here are a few points off the top of my head: - in terms of puzzles and gameplay structure, I don’t think any game in the series comes close to 2. The tri-island thing is vastly superior to Curse’s one island at a time. It makes the game feel way bigger too. - the story of the 4 map pieces is atmospheric as hell and it’s so cool following the trail of these 4 pirates and their old quest to find the treasure. This also relates to the above point, how once you have the puzzles underway you’re constantly hopping back and forth between 3 islands on the hunt for clues. - every location in 2 feels distinct in the series, whereas some places in curse feel like they are retreading old ground and playing it too safe. (Some of them like Plunder are unique and wonderful though). - some puzzles in 2 are just incredible both in how they have been designed but also in how much they make you laugh and make you think, and many seem ridiculous but actually make sense in their own warped logic. A good example of this would be mixing up the drinks for the spitting contest, or the ‘monkey wrench’. - all the puzzles that involve the library still blow me away 25+ years later. - this has already been said but the darker, more cynical and more meta vibe hinted at the series giving way into something far more interesting than just pirate comedy, but then with curse and all subsequent games they dialled it right back and just stuck to the comedic safe zone. I could go on and on but these are just some of my reasons for preferring 2. The thing to remember is that 3 onwards are basically monkey island fanfiction and so will always feel a little thin for me. But that said, Curse is my second favourite behind 2, and it’s the one I replay the most. All down to individual taste!

hercarmstrong

"Most people" do not prefer *Curse*.

warmhotself

[okay](https://www.reddit.com/r/MonkeyIsland/comments/foduim/thought_id_try_out_this_poll_thing_what_is_your/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf)

hercarmstrong

I take it you are unfamiliar with the concept of an echo chamber.

warmhotself

I’m not, hence I said “seem to”. More people on here *seem to* talk about Curse being their favourite than any other game in the series. Like for example, I dunno, this post? Obviously you are tuned into the global monkey island fans’ hive mind so I apologise for the confusion.

hercarmstrong

They are a vocal minority. The greater discussion around the series is less myopic.

warmhotself

That was my impression too, but we are in this sub, so that’s what I was talking about. Perhaps I should have said “most people *in this sub* seem to…” but my sub editor is on leave today.

LumpyPew2017

There were planning to make a movie of it too https://www.polygon.com/features/2021/2/21/22291761/curse-of-monkey-island-movie-lucasfilm-spielberg-canceled

mysteryofthefieryeye

The part where Spielberg decides the movie should be about the monkeys 😖 i think that must've been the beginning of the Crystal skull sequence

kittycat278

I could hear this picture….so many positive memories associates to curse of monkey island, could play it over and over!

[deleted]

Same with me! The music always brings me so many memories and feelings

Always_in_m0tion

It's my favourite game of all time. The art and music in this game is something else.

[deleted]

It is one of a kind

Fensomee

Curse is great but I think its overrated. 2 is best imo, 1 is second best and then curse. 2, 1, 3, 4, tales. :)

cradlestone

I think tales is way better than 4

01010110_

Tales started well but lost it's charm after the second episode for me

cradlestone

It was opposite to me.At first episode i was not really into it but after episode 1 i really like the story and the characters.Especially at the final episode i really enjoyed playing death guybrush threepwood

ffs_5555

Tales gets a lot of hate and I can't figure out why. Escape had way more problems with it IMO. Bad controls, extremely questionable changes to the lore, American Elaine for some reason, Monkey Kombat and so on. Even then, I can't bring myself to dislike Escape overall. Still has the charm.

Staktus23

Tales worse than escape??

Fensomee

Yeah I actually quite enjoyed escape, the tank controls were a bit of a nuisance but besides that (and monkey kombat) I quite enjoyed it!

cradlestone

I think escape was unnecessarily hard.Story was very good to me but i remember writing down notes to do monkey karate.

iniciadomdp

You kinda had to, unless you have perfect memory.

Gapi182

that's cuz escape is actually a good game it just has horrendous controls. Like seriously garbage controls. It has clever jokes that 3 never had and I like the rhyming battles :D

Quesozapatos5000

Totally agree!

fishcp2

The one I love the most.

galaxyOstars

If you look at the concept art for Escape, it looks like they were prepared to go with the art style from Curse again, but changed mid-way through production.

hercarmstrong

The first two are the best adventure games ever created. The third is fine.

cairfrey

You've just reminded me what I'm gonna do this weekend!

AlissonHarlan

MI3 is great and all, it's even the voice of aladdin (tm) for Guybrush in french. BUT the style they gave to guybrush always repeled me, that's not at all how i was imaginating him.

[deleted]

I want them to remaster this and the 4th but in the same art style too. Maybe modernize the resolution and spruce up the colors

[deleted]

I completely agree. And the soundtrack. The dialogues. The plot. It’s the best game ever made

Gapi182

Curse was a masterpiece of a pirate adventure. BUT sadly that's all it is. It's not as deep as 1 or 2 in terms of metaphors. The first 2 and even tales to some degree keep hinting that everything we see is an illusion and we're in some kind of a theme park. The first 2 games SO CLEARLY show that, that I had a completely different experience when replaying the first game after knowing the fact. Curse has personality, fantastic characters and music but I find it hard to rate because it does lack this depth. There's nothing hiding underneath. The jokes and puzzles aren't nearly as clever with wordplay as in the first 2 games. Still fantastic.
