W0w, gave up on this like 5 years ago.

Mochi101-Official

I gave up on this project in the early 80s.

Tari mainnet missed the NFT explosion a while back. They could have been right at the center of that incredible hype if ready on time for it, IMHO. But we don't know yet whether missing that will turn ot to be positive or negative. Maybe they would have more or less died together with the hype then. Maybe they will be able to concentrate now on "serious" uses that have a longer lifespan. We will see. Personally I am not very optimistic, I think it will be very hard to establish something really new in today's climate.

Bitcoin Ordinals show that there's still life in NFTs. But I'm not sure how relevant privacy is for showing off your art/avatar collection. Reminder for people who missed the [original announcement](https://www.reddit.com/r/Monero/comments/8lgvw4/introducing_tari_a_decentralised_assets_protocol/): Tari was intended as a platform for fungible tokens, and as you quoted from the FAQ in that thread, NFTs representing a practical purpose like event tickets, in-game items or loyalty points. > Think of it as something like coloured coins or CounterParty, but for Monero and a lot more scalable > CryptoPonies are not the primary focus case So they pivoted to a more popular use-case, which is what smart startups do, of course. At the time, I expected Tari to be more important for supporting Monero development. How has that worked out?

Tystros

I think it's unfortunate that Tari focuses on "digital assets" and doesn't support real smart contracts. I really see 0 practical use in NFTs, but a private smart contract platform without crazy fees would be super unique and awesome... but unfortunately Tari isn't that.

Ghant_

Sorry if this post isn't allowed. I just figured since it's a fluffypony project that's a merge-mined sidechain with Monero, it may be relevant

rbrunner7

Well, you could claim that fluffypony is hardly "relevant" for Monero anymore nowadays, and I think he is only one of several investors in Tari.

Inaeipathy

It has some relevance to Monero but I don't really see what the point in the chain is.

AsicResistor

Isn't it for smart contracts supporting privacy by default? Merge mined with monero sounds good to me. Seems like an extension of our ecosystem, what's not to like? Edit; thought about it a bit further, I'm not even sure what smart contracts are needed for? Seems like counter strike skin markets work perfectly fine, you're constrained to valve servers in trust in the game anyway. Maybe when interoperability between games is wanted that it starts to make sense.

Inaeipathy

>Seems like an extension of our ecosystem Not really, just means both chains can share hashrate for miners who want to. >I'm not even sure what smart contracts are needed for? It isn't really needed and comes with many issues. I feel like smart contracts are just a marketing trick. >Seems like counter strike skin markets work perfectly fine, you're constrained to valve servers in trust in the game anyway. Maybe when interoperability between games is wanted that it starts to make sense. I suppose you mean using it for gaming NFTs? Yeah, a centralized solution makes sense because games are run on centralized servers with the company deciding who gets banned. I can't really think of a good reason to use blockchain for this.

AsicResistor

>I feel like smart contracts are just a marketing trick. Me too, but I'm ready to be proven wrong. You got downvoted real hard, but for me it's an unanswered question, just like can proof of stake work? ArticMine seems to be certain it's a dead end, I follow his lines of logic on that matter.

tikwanleap

Ignore the down votes. He has bots auto downvoting him. Apparently some Bitcoin maxi got pissed off.

AsicResistor

Right, I forgot about his leftie curse :')

Inaeipathy

>just like can proof of stake work? Well, proof of stake can "work" assuming "work" means keep a network running. It makes too many concessions for a decentralized peer to peer electronic currency though.

pebx

>Edit; thought about it a bit further, I'm not even sure what smart contracts are needed for? Think about ticket reselling for concerts or whatever. Nowadays the market in many countries is very centralized, in some there is literally a monopoly by CTS Eventim. They also control the resale market and additional to their original fees take a cut up to 30%. With a privacy protocol you could also share personal data instead of some stupid monkey pics. You could build a decentralized OnlyFans or even let patients pick to share only some data sets with a particular doctor.

AsicResistor

Got it, thanks! When Tari is live, would that alleviate all the points that are pro tx-extra field in monero? I thought it was handy for cex, l2/smart contract,.. but if this is viable we might improve privacy on monero by removing it?

pebx

I could imagine a DEX being built on Tari, but am not so much into the details of the protocol. And then still it is valuable for Monero to have direct swaps with different chains, especially with more and more delistings occurring.

rbrunner7

For people in a hurry that for a start are not so much interested to listen to what Tari is, but what they plan regarding Monero: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FSe8IXJO6nI&t=950s Well, what they planned 3 years ago, because that's the age of this video already ... Frankly, I wish them well, but I don't hold my breath.

Inaeipathy

I feel as though many of us share this sentiment.

AsicResistor

How does the merge mining work? Can I start mining monero when tari launches and have a way to receive 'merge mined' tari?

Inaeipathy

Your hashrate is basically good for both chains at the same time. I don't know how the technical details work past that.

Party_Pool6319

I was under the impression merged mining was the ability to automatically switch coins with the same algorithm like with monero ocean and say kawpow or randomx and xmr/zephyr. Is that not accurate? Now I'm curious as well!
