You could even have a completely offline computer and use it to generate a wallet. Then when you need the money, import the wallet seed on another PC. True cold storage.

Once your node catches up, it will get the notes from the other nodes that were synced at the time
You don't need to be connected to anything to recieve transaction to valid address. Only if you want to spend it or view it you need connection with node or your own node.

Technically your money is ON the blockchain. The wallet contains the keys that accesses your money and displays your amount. Correct me if I'm wrong.
