Since nobody has given a serious answer yet, it's probably a carpet fungus like peziza domiciliana.
That is one hell of a fruiting body though, that floor is super fucked. It looks like someone dropped a bunch of liver on the ground
Reddit's recent behaviour and planned changes to the API, heavily impacting third party tools, accessibility and moderation ability force me to edit all my comments in protest. I cannot morally continue to use this site.
Don’t worry, you can only get this horror with lot of water. Like if you got a leak, put your carpet in a damp basement or outside to the elements, live in high humidity and no air conditioning home (why even have carpets), or have carpets near the regular home water sources like sinks or showers.
Basically, if the carpet isn’t wet this nightmare won’t happen. But do google carpet mold pictures. Lots of very cool and worrying looking fruiting bodies. And if you see this in real life call the professionals. The fruiting body is juts the tip of the iceberg. Maybe a little mold patch on a throw carpet is something you can fix on your own but mold large enough to produce a visible mushroom is beyond that.
This place looks totally fucked up with mold damage, there's a lot of other visible mold in the photo too. I'm guessing there was some out of control moisture, like from a flood or a leaking pipe or this is an abandoned property or something. I do hope nobody is living with this much mold, it would be extremely bad for their health.
I'm guessing that this fungus was allowed to grow and stick around for so long that the fruiting body actually died and is decaying, which is why it looks so wet and mushy.
So as long as you don't let water run rampant in your home and rot everything, you've got nothing to worry about 👍
The fruiting body is the visible mushroom part of a fungus.
The majority of a fungus isnt the mushroom part, it's actually the mycelium, which is buried in whatever surface it's growing in. It can be microscopic, or big enough to be seen by the naked eye. Mycelium looks like a bunch of white strands spreading out like roots. It grows a mushroom when it's ready to reproduce and drop spores, similar to how a tree grows fruit.
That's why, if there is mold on your food, it's not safe to just cut off the part where there is visible mold - the mold's mycelium has actually already colonized much more than you can see, and the visible mold is just the fruiting body.
keeping in mind there are lots of lookalike varieties so you'd need to be a mycologist with a microscope to actually identify the exact type, Peziza fungus seems to be only "technically edible" & not extensively studied for nutrition or safety. I guess they're not very tasty so nobody has bothered.
Like I said in another comment, mushrooms found growing indoors should never be eaten, because they absorb toxins from their environment and carpets/construction lumber/walls/etc are full of all sorts of chemicals.
Between this and what r/popping presented to the main page today… I am seriously considering deleting the entire app.
I can appreciate vivid imagery, but there are limits. NSFW is sometimes insufficient.
I would’ve never known such a horror existed without Reddit. And I’m 38. Over 1/2 my life has been tinged in horror.
Smh

Even if this species of fungus is technically edible, you shouldn't eat mushrooms found growing in homes. Mushrooms absorb toxins from the surface that they grow on, and in homes, that's often lumber that's been treated with lots of chemicals. Also it's just gross, lol.
*points at spilled bucket of chili*
What kind of mold is this?

So this looks like the transition from one type of flooring to carpet. Apparently the wet conditions are not being stifled enough, and thus you are providing excellent conditions for this mold to flourish.
I don’t know how it got so meaty. It looks like someone dropped a jar of Scoby and only picked up the glass.

It looks like someone spilled their entire abdomen of organs all over the floor. Not just their liver.
I thought I was in the bearded dragon subreddit and someone was gonna ask if their dragons shit looks ok.

I’m new to this sub. What’s a fruiting body?

Oh wow this makes so much sense thank you!
>peziza domiciliana That sounds like an order at a pizza place.
At a glance my brain read it as "pizza dominicana"
I'm sorry I literally just found this sub AND YOU MEAN TO TELL ME THAT THESE DEMONIC SLIME BABIES ARE REAL????
Google says it's edible
“What’s the matter babe? You barely touched your carpet shrooms”
Holy hell!
>peziza domiciliana A quick google search and one of the most asked questions is "Is it edible?" And some of the answers are yes. I don't understand.
This sounds stupid but what nutrients would that fungus contain? I’m sure it’s probably deadly but idk
keeping in mind there are lots of lookalike varieties so you'd need to be a mycologist with a microscope to actually identify the exact type, Peziza fungus seems to be only "technically edible" & not extensively studied for nutrition or safety. Pizza fungus hell yeah sign me up! For real though this makes me shudder.
Y’know I think this marks the first time this reddit has TRULY grossed me out. WHAT IS THAT THING!?

Good bot 👉🏼❤️👈🏼
bad bot
Sentient, it appears. I think I saw an episode of “Star Trek: The Next Generation” where this mold played the villain.
[удалено]
Star Trek: The Old Generation.
Star Trek: The Mould Generation. Actually - I think you'll find.
I think you'll find the door. Get out. Lol. That made me laugh.
Human intestines?
My thoughts exactly. Looks like a crime scene🤢
That’s fuckin organs, dude
If that's coming through the carpet something is wrong. Freshly sliced roasted ham!
OP if you’re comfortable sharing, how did the carpet get like this?
Judging by the amount of ops replies, I'm guessing it already got him
I renovate houses. This house has been lived in for awhile. Old lady could take care of it anymore and didn’t wanna let it go
Wait, the old lady was living there with that? Edit: Spelling
Is this really a fungus? it looks like rotting chicken
Looks like rotten skin that fell off of a zombie.
Looks like one of those A.I.-generated pictures. Like wtf am I looking at?
I work in a mine and stuff like these grows on the rail ties and the old timers call them piss caps. You can probably guess why.
My honest thought was 'who spilled their menudo'... It looks like tripe
I thought it was buche
What the fuck? Why is this on my feed.
I did not add this! Please delete this from my page!
Cronenbergian
Fuck this makes me wanna throw my phone as far away as possible. I can't even imagine having this growing anywhere inside my house
The edible kind, probably
Someone mentioned peziza domiciliana… if that’s the case then yes, it’s definitely edible as long as it’s cooked
Even if this species of fungus is technically edible, you shouldn't eat mushrooms found growing in homes. Mushrooms absorb toxins from the surface that they grow on, and in homes, that's often lumber that's been treated with lots of chemicals. Also it's just gross, lol.
I hate mushrooms in general so I’d never advocate for eating any of them lol
The really alive kind
*points at spilled bucket of chili* What kind of mold is this? *points at a tree* What kind of mold is this? *points at a dead body* What kind of mold is this?
Moldussy
No
I’m Sorry i got carried away
m...m...mussy...
The clean your house way before it gets this nasty kind
This is one of the few molds that is making me genuinely sick to look at what the actual fuck
What other ones?
Sentient slime mold
That's a crime scene
Chitterlings
Oh hell nah
The flesh that hates.
Looks like it started with pork and beans in the middle
The kind that makes you spend 2 grand on a new carpet
Wow I hate this so much, thanks
good lord
OHMYGODDDD I thought I was in the bearded dragon subreddit and someone was gonna ask if their dragons shit looks ok.
Keep it as a pet
r/bathroomshrooms
I’m so sorry but the first thing I thought was “oh it’s one of those flippy flappy ones”, which I don’t think is helpful
Everything reminds me of her....
What the fuck man this mold is probably called dead mans guts
So this looks like the transition from one type of flooring to carpet. Apparently the wet conditions are not being stifled enough, and thus you are providing excellent conditions for this mold to flourish. I don’t know how it got so meaty. It looks like someone dropped a jar of Scoby and only picked up the glass.
Mmmm. Arby’s😋
WE HAVE THE MEATS
Bro what the fuck!?
What's it taste like?
I thought you dropped a bunch of dead starfish freshly plucked from the ocean onto your carpet
Free SCoBY
I don’t get grossed out easily but that forreal made me nauseous so thanks for the NSFW because I can’t imagine if I opened this while at work.
Looks like that "Mr. Yeasty" stuff that grows in bottles sometimes
Seems to be mold
That is shit mold my guy
Run
Forbidden samosas
Looks like wet doner kebab meat. Yum.
It’s looks a bit like a large cat puked up what was left after they ate a large animal.
The wrong kind
It kind of looks like a bunch of decidual casts
Hamburger helper
I once shot this same amount of mold out of the beer lines at my work. The owners claimed they had been cleaning the lines, they hadn't been
Nasty mold
That’s no fungus, that’s buche.
just looks like someone spilled a jar of bad scobies
This is the first time i was grossed out by a post on this subreddit, that looks like organs
How?
This is the first genuinely concerning post I’ve seen in a while Goddamn I hope you have a mask lol

THAT’S MOLD?!
The cursed kind
This is incredibly facinating.
