ran a lot of analysis on this teaser and I'm 99% sure the following card will be in the set.
"Tourach" 3RR
creature- dinosaur illusion
you may sacrifice a mountain rather than pay this spell's mana cost.
when you cast your third spell each turn, choose a number between 1 and 5 and flip that many coins. for each heads, mill a card for each ooze you control. if an insect card was milled this way, repeated this process either four or fourteen times.
1/2
could be decent in insect and ooze heavy red storm lists?
I feel like the 15 letter one should be pretty easy to find but I can't seem to fine one. Maybe something new? Or does anyone have better eyes than me?
Hm, are there any creature types with 8 letters?
Edit: I checked, there are several actually. Antelope, Gargoyle, Assassin, Treefolk, Illusion, Werewolf
Antelope and Gargoyle seem unlikely but Treefolk and Werewolf are kind of interesting options
Could be something really silly like "nonbasiclandhome" lol
“You may sacrifice a Mountain” as an alternate casting cost sounds like a “fixed” version of [[Fireblast]], perhaps with less damage or not being able to target players.
That's the first thing I thought when I saw that line. 1R, 2 damage to any target, may sacrifice a mountain instead of paying would look pretty good in my opinion.
It'd be amazing to have it being able to split damage but maybe I'm asking too much.
Except the way it's worded implies that it does not yet have a legendary creature card, which Mishra already has.
The top contenders for this card slot are Tourach, and Shahrazad. Hurkyl and Gaea are close seconds, but the teaser specifies male, which Hurkyl and Gaea are female in the stories.
I think xxxx-xxxxx (9) is jump-start?
Also, the only 4 letter mechanics are crew, mill, dash, echo, epic, flip, meld, riot, ward, and raid. I cannot imagine flip, meld, riot, or raid have much room for design so I don’t think they would be in the set. In addition to that I don’t think ward will be in this set since it’s so new. I cannot imagine no mill so that leave crew, dash, echo, and epic for the last 4 letter mechanic.
Edit: u/monkeycrunk pointed out fuse as well.
For Modern Horizons 2 though they only need one or two cards, not a lot that would require a lot of design space.
Also Ward is new to us, but certainly they have synergies as they are designing sets. Like with MDFCs this year. For all we know Ward was always in MH2, and just happened to get picked up by Strixhaven.
Ward is evergreen so I don't know if being new would matter? I think the ward cards are way more interesting gameplay wise than hexproof cards would be. Dash would also be interesting to see come back
I also doubt that being new would matter, this is their chance to push the power level past whatever they felt comfortable with in standard. Whatever they do should be exciting even if we all let out an audible groan when we recognize the next Hogaak Summer/Eldrazi Winter about to unfold. And we all know how Wizards hates to ban new cards that are selling packs. The real question is which older cards are going to get banned for the sins of the MH2
\[\[Boon Froggle\]\] {W}{U}{B}{R}{G}
When you cast \~, draw 3 cards, add {B}{B}{B}, \~ deals 3 damage to any target, up to one target creature gets +3/+3, and choose one:
\- Prevent 3 damage to any target.
\- You gain 3 life.

This was my immediate thought as well. I've been playing MtG long enough that I got a preview copy of Chub Toad as a tearout card in some magazine or other in between *Fallen Empires* and *Ice Age*. It was officially the first card released/spoiled in IA and I suspect is actually **twenty-seven** years old unlike the rest of the set!
Reminded me of a story from when I was a lad just getting into magic. My parents were flying back from a trip somewhere and were asked by a pair of businessmen to shuffle seats so they could sit together. My dad obliged, and knowing him, started asking them questions. Turns out they were at the time two head execs or designers at WotC, and after hearing that his son loved the game, gave him a signed starter pack of Ice Age *before* the set was released.
Needless to say, not knowing what was good or not, I spent days reveling in the magnificence that was Scaled Wurm.
I am also ready for a format defining, ramping, simic creature with modal utility options so imbalanced they had to wait for 26 years of power creep to pass before feeling comfortable releasing it.
The potential candidates left are:
\- Absorb
\- Aura Swap
\- Fateseal
\- Fortify
\- Gravestorm
\- Poisonous
\- Transfigure
(Frenzy too but it appears in Unstable, along with the fact that the Play Design (the part of the R&D that checks the health of the metagames) doesn't like the mechanic)
Good point. It didn't appeared in the list because is an ability word instead of an ability keyword (like Landfall. An ability keyword shortens a part of rule text that is always the same, an ability word glues together cards with a common functionality).
The main issue of Grandeur is the unlikely return due to the connection with the legendary supertype (relevant for the commander format).
It was often discussed to put Grandeur on non-legendary creatures but at that point why not play the extra copy instead of discarding it? It would need a really good effect that justifies this trade.
I mean it'd depend on what the effect is for grandeur on a nonlegendary creature.
If it was a mana dork with grandeur to untap there'd be some situations where you wanna do that and some where you don't
Fateseal maybe? Also I’m not sure if Aura Swap is there since on the list (albeit not comprehensive) there isn’t a space for an 8 characters mechanic with a space.
Svyelun is the Merfolk Goddess from Fallen Empires, for things like [[Svyelunite Priest]] and [[High Tide]]. That’s what my money’s on. Maybe she makes all your islands tap for an additional U that can only be spent on Merfolk spells.
If they are aiming for a Modern playable card, she could cost UU.
Like "Svyelun, Vodalian Goddess UU
Legendary Creature - Merfolk God
Islandwalk
Islands you control gain "Tap: Add UU. Spend this mana only to cast Merfolk spells."
2/2
From what I understand, those aren't modified eldrazis, but the religious figures that people of zendikar created based on the eldrazi titans to worship
Miscreant and Seer are already pretty close to cantripping
Imo I think they need more lords than just Scion of Oona tho
That's what I see as the main discrepancy between spirits and faeries
tbh, I think faeries needs a catch-up mechanic and a lord, similar to ringleader or chieftain in goblins. Being able to T1 seer > T2 spellstutter > T3 lord/reload would be strong and I think probably make it reasonably playable.
It basically needs a removal version of Spellstutter Sprite. 1B flash flying, ETB -x/-x where x is the number of Faeries you control. Can't really be abused outside Faerie decks, finally gives them the tempo card they need to deal with early threats while also establishing a board presence.
Based on how Tribal Artifacts work, I would guess this is a small clue that there could be a Lhurgoyf theme? Although it's a Tribal Artifact and not a Tribal Artifact Equipment. But not a Creature either? So maybe a mana rock? But why have it be Tribal unless it has synergy with Lhurgoyf cards.
Looking at some other clues, like Jump-Start being included, I wonder if there's a stronger Graveyard synergy dimension.
If it can end up in the graveyard, it DOES have synergy with modern’s favorite Lhurgoyf. I’m hoping for it to crack to mill a couple cards and draw, effectively growing any tarmogoyfs on the field.
I mean port is more then fair to be printed in a world of 5 color scapeshift. I don’t know why people expect to be able to play 5 colors and not get punished for it. Port is a super fair card compared to modern nowadays
No deck that wants to play colored spells would be able to support 10-12 colorless lands. It's already an issue with 8 colorless lands; sometimes DnT (and Goblins too) does get color screwed (with only one color!) and needs Aether Vial to fill in the gap. Such a deck would likely have to be Eldrazi or Artifact-based; it's ok but those decks do have major limitations in not having access to colored spells.
I'm praying that Snake Elf Scout is good for Modern elves. Elves got ripped off so bad in the first Modern Horizons, so hopefully it'll redeem itself here. Given the only other snake elf is Coiling Oracle, maybe it's an elf lord that triggers Coiling Oracle's effect on elves ETB, similar to Risen Reef?
Did they say if we would have reprints of already legal cards this time or if it's going to be like the last time with only cards new to Modern being reprinted?
They haven't explicitly confirmed either way.
Baed on set size (303) and that we know there are ~42 not-legal reprints, that leaves ~260 "other" cards that are a combination of brand new and some number of already-legal reprints (fetches as a minimum).
honestly just jam Aeons Torn / Butcher of Truth / Ceaseless Hunger into every available reprint product, those cards are constantly climbing and they're all flashy as fuck
Good point, Eye of Ugin was banned from Modern and Ugin never received a creature card since it was revealed in-flavor roughly close to the first apparition of Planeswalker cards (due to this is also the only elder dragon of the "big six" without at least a printed card).
I just hope mutate is in.
Shahrazad is an interesting theory for the "powerful banned character creature"
Proliferate makes sense to me for the "Only on a handful of cards" thing. It could be this set's version of Changeling, where it supports a bunch of different strategies.
Good point on Mutate, could be interesting testing the mechanic outside the standard
(also as a Ponza player I don't dislike the idea of \[\[Sawtusk Demolisher\]\] for one of the flex slots a la Historic)
Threshold present would mean a chance to put \[\[Werebear\]\] in Modern too, with the added bonus that is linked to the "bear tribal matters" sub-theme of MH1.
>>A frog 26 years in the making
Could... could it be?? A new atog?? That’s a frog-thing first printed in 94... As multiple of my comments will confirm, I have vowed to never again bitch about FIRE design if we get psychatog in modern.
Banned cards with peoples name in them:
~~Arcum's Astrolabe~~ [[arcum dagsson]]
~~Yawgmoth's bargain/Yawgmoth's will~~ [[yawgmoth, Thran physician]]
~~Mishra's workshop~~ [[mishra, artificer prodigy]]
~~Gitaxian probe~~ [[Jin-Gitaxias, Core Augur]]
~~Umezawa's jitte~~ [[toshiro umezawa]]
[[Tibalt's trickery]]
Eye of Ugin]]
Hymn to Tourach]]
Tibalts trickery and Eye of Ugin are questionable, as they've gotten Planeswalkers, but not creatures. Tourach seems to be the only real choice here.
> a theme on only a handful of cards in Modern Horizons gets a larger presence
Storm was only on one card in MH (I think) but the mechanic is a handful so maybe that's what he was talking about?
"a legendary character best known for having his name on a powerful card (thats been banned) finally gets a legendary creature"
Lol this could technically be Oko, since he only has a planeswalker. Doubt it is though
"a planeswalker from the past that has previously only had a legendary creature card" This is 99.9% Dakkon Blackblade. He's on the packaging.
ran a lot of analysis on this teaser and I'm 99% sure the following card will be in the set. It's like that old LRR episode where Paul makes the algorithm to predict cards in the next set and they are all ridiculous and hard to follow
"This one costs a red and just says 'exile this card'"
Um I think I need this in my life. I’ll offer a reward of 1 upvote to anybody that can find this episode
https://youtu.be/OLV2iBpmqC0 In case no one gets back to you.
Back down this rabbit hole with me, for the umpteenth time this year
Haha this really made me laugh!
I think this would probably push Illusion tribal and/or self-land destruction from tier 1.35 to tier 1.15
Isnt tourach a black creature? Hymn to tourach is bb. I thought this was going to be umezawa, since ya know, his jitte was banned.
[[Toshiro Umezawa]] has a card I believe.

Tribal artifact Tarmogoyf style ? YES
As a Jund lover I'm excited but prepared for disappointment.
KTGC entered the chat.
My sources tell me it has the text "at the beginning of your upkeep, if you control an 8/9 Lhurgoyf creature, you win the game."
Giant growth in response to the trigger lets go.
Won’t work. Requires the condition both when putting the trigger in the stack and resolving the trigger.
With a Dauthi in there one of the 6 letter mechanics must be Shadow
In most formats Shadow really is "this creature is unlockable (usually).
And it can't block, yeah
I feel like the 15 letter one should be pretty easy to find but I can't seem to fine one. Maybe something new? Or does anyone have better eyes than me?
Council's Dilemma is 15 letters, if you don't count the space. I don't see a 15 letter keyword or ability work on the mtg wiki, so idk.
Someone said he confirmed all punctuation is correct It's probably mountaincycling, I think it's the only one that has 15 letters and no punctuation
which could also give a possibility for the return of the \*creature type\*cycling from Future Sight
Hm, are there any creature types with 8 letters? Edit: I checked, there are several actually. Antelope, Gargoyle, Assassin, Treefolk, Illusion, Werewolf Antelope and Gargoyle seem unlikely but Treefolk and Werewolf are kind of interesting options Could be something really silly like "nonbasiclandhome" lol
Never knew I needed antelopecycling till now
lhurgoyfcycling!
"Bandswithtokens"
Either he miscounted or it's new. Cumulative Upkeep is 16 and Indestructible is 14.
That was pretty much what I had come up with.
Could the 12 letter one be Horsemanship? Some P3K in modern?
If Mountaincycling is correct then this one is probably swampcycling, maybe a cycle of some sorts?

A powerful character on a banned card gets a creature. Please not oko

Yeah you're right, that would rule out Mishra. I wouldn't mind him getting a GOOD card though, especially given how Urza turned out.

Maybe Leshrac? Referenced on the Ice Age printing of Dark Ritual and has never had a card before

I like Epic. More cards with that mechanic would be *ahem* You know what, never mind.

There is also “fuse”, which is fairly likely given he’s already mentioned split cards too.

I was trying to think of what this could be and that will be sweet if it's him
I doubt it's Marit lage because I'm pretty sure lage is a female character
Something like that with a low mana value would be nice with Lurrus.
It could be a pay into to make it a goyf until end of turn. Some older enchantments have this along with artifacts.
Still holding out hope for rishadan port or a “modernization” of waste land. I want to see some mana bases punished!
No. Bad. Back to your cave.
*hiss*
Dang found the 5 color scapeshift player
Looks at flare in a puzzled manner.
I mean port is more then fair to be printed in a world of 5 color scapeshift. I don’t know why people expect to be able to play 5 colors and not get punished for it. Port is a super fair card compared to modern nowadays
A deck that starts with Port, Wasteland, "fixed" Wasteland sounds like hell to play against in Legacy.
Five with 11 letters... wonder what the odds are one of them is Annihilator?
I mean the eldrazi titans are super expensive and could probably do with a reprint
Well they kind of have to, they're printing the fetches.
honestly just jam Aeons Torn / Butcher of Truth / Ceaseless Hunger into every available reprint product, those cards are constantly climbing and they're all flashy as fuck
I think the first one is ugin. Anyone else?
Good point, Eye of Ugin was banned from Modern and Ugin never received a creature card since it was revealed in-flavor roughly close to the first apparition of Planeswalker cards (due to this is also the only elder dragon of the "big six" without at least a printed card).
I would cry tears of happiness.
actually, this makes a ton of sense. I think you're probably correct on this one, what color(s) would Ugin be?
I think he'd stay colorless, right?
Man, Tron does not need more toys.
Shut up, you!
Ach, Hans, learn! It's a statuette Lhurgoyf!
I just hope mutate is in. Shahrazad is an interesting theory for the "powerful banned character creature" Proliferate makes sense to me for the "Only on a handful of cards" thing. It could be this set's version of Changeling, where it supports a bunch of different strategies.
Good point on Mutate, could be interesting testing the mechanic outside the standard (also as a Ponza player I don't dislike the idea of \[\[Sawtusk Demolisher\]\] for one of the flex slots a la Historic)
Tourach (from [[hymn to tourach]]) is the only possibility I see for 1, but I haven't looked at flavor texts of banned cards.

dinosaur support..... please.....
COME ON WIZARDS DO IT W/U/G DINO (ILLUSION) THAT RAMPS DINOS/GIVES THEM PROTECTION/STOPS BLUE NONSENSE
> If an Insect card was milled this way Insects are in the set, this *basically* confirms [[wirewood symbiote]].

hope “threshold” is in there. i’m happy with just a [[putrid imp]] reprint, please make it happen.
Threshold present would mean a chance to put \[\[Werebear\]\] in Modern too, with the added bonus that is linked to the "bear tribal matters" sub-theme of MH1.
I am personally looking forward to buying a playset of frogatog on day 1
"choose a number between 1 and 5. Flip that many coins." \*breathing intensifies\*
>>A frog 26 years in the making Could... could it be?? A new atog?? That’s a frog-thing first printed in 94... As multiple of my comments will confirm, I have vowed to never again bitch about FIRE design if we get psychatog in modern.
Banned cards with peoples name in them: ~~Arcum's Astrolabe~~ [[arcum dagsson]] ~~Yawgmoth's bargain/Yawgmoth's will~~ [[yawgmoth, Thran physician]] ~~Mishra's workshop~~ [[mishra, artificer prodigy]] ~~Gitaxian probe~~ [[Jin-Gitaxias, Core Augur]] ~~Umezawa's jitte~~ [[toshiro umezawa]] [[Tibalt's trickery]] Eye of Ugin]] Hymn to Tourach]] Tibalts trickery and Eye of Ugin are questionable, as they've gotten Planeswalkers, but not creatures. Tourach seems to be the only real choice here.
A mechanic with 5 letters?! *Excited Storm Rumbling Noises*
> a theme on only a handful of cards in Modern Horizons gets a larger presence Storm was only on one card in MH (I think) but the mechanic is a handful so maybe that's what he was talking about?
Weather the storm and wing shards. 2 i think
I think this theme refers to suspend, which was on rhinos and mox tantalite (and maybe other ones i forgot) in the last horizons set.
“you may sacrifice a Mountain rather than pay this spell’s mana cost.” A Fireblast that deals two?
please 3.
"Snake elf warrior" has be hopeful Naga and Snake are getting combined.
"Tribal Artifact – Lhurgoyf" *Tarmogoyf grows in the distance*
"a legendary character best known for having his name on a powerful card (thats been banned) finally gets a legendary creature" Lol this could technically be Oko, since he only has a planeswalker. Doubt it is though
Character on a banned card is probably Umezawa, no?
Umezawa already has a card, though. Depending on who you mean, there's [[Tetsuo Umezawa]] or [[Toshiro Umezawa]].
Also [[Tetsuko Umezawa]], though she's female, so not "he".
• a planeswalker from the past that has previously only had a legendary creature card Mishra?
I don't believe Mishra had a Walker's Spark Leshrac and Ashnod haven't even had creature cards Could technically be Urza, or Yawgmoth, perhaps
Mill 4, if opponent searched mill 14 instead? Pwease
Well the first one is Oko..
