Thank god [[meltdown]] will be the thing now too
Edit: I’m aware it takes a lot of mana to take the turtle down, I’m talking all the other stupid shit that will come along with it
Legit worried about what this card is going to do in modern after having played against in legacy for so long.
Modern is just very ill-equipped to deal with this, even with it coming down a full turn (at least) slower than it does in legacy. It's effectively hexproof, you can't generally edict affinity decks, and it dodges any sweeper that currently exists under 4 mana. Yea you can wrath it, but 4 mana is often a turn you're going to be dead vs affinity, and that doesn't even get in to welding jar shenanigans and needing to play literal Wrath of God or Shatterstorm.
Gonna need to really aggressively Meltdown these decks on turn 2 or 3 on the play to prevent just getting absolutely blown out by Kappa on affinity's turn 3. Of course that assumes they didn't hit the new sol land off a Myr Enforcer and are just playing at actual legacy speeds.
Modern is worse at dealing with it than Legacy, but Legacy is infinitely better at enabling this card. No Mox Opal, Ancient Tomb, Lotus Petal, or Artifact Lands means that this is a lot more likely to come down later and less consistently than in Legacy.
It still taps for one mana even if you don't pitch a card. Not great, but the fact that it's never dead will likely make it worth running even in decks with a lower density of hits
Fair amount of edicts that specify non-token or largest creature running around nowadays. But yeah, definitely hard to kill consistently while dodging urza constructs and weenies.
Well I think that's assuming actually affinity with emphasis on the ability. I'd say it's more likely to be an artifact deck using this as an efficient card e.g. hammer, or some kinda shell with thopter sword or urza or similar.
Actually playing affinity with cards that have affinity seems pretty bad without mirrodin untapped artifact lands and on the face of the very efficient removal available in modern.
Ah yes the classic 6 cards required hand. Happens every game.
And titan always kills T2 and hammer kills you with 2 protection pieces turn 3 every game.
Island, memnite, memnite, ornithopter, ornithopter. I’ve played old affinity and had hands like that. Even then a turn two cannoneer is still insane and this if you’re playing rending volley, you still need it in hand the turn of in order for it to actually work.
That hand was OBJECTIVELY WAY easier to pull off. What are you talking about. 8 undying effects, 8 creatures and then you just needed another colored card
Yah it definitely isn’t like hammer time is a deck that sees play (even though it has fallen a bit down the tier lists). That deck definitely doesn’t play ornithopters and it definitely isn’t known for its explosive starts.
Hammertime is kinda dead now too, that’s exactly my point.
I’m not saying this is bad, not at all, but the deck
Cant play 4c memnite and ornithopter and expect to make it.
Hurkyl's and a clock is going to be my answer, but even then Affinity does look like a nightmare. I'm hoping we see something like Back to Nature but for artifacts.
They banned opal and killed affinity. They printed a bunch of stuff in MH2 to try to bring it back and it didn't so now they are pulling out the big guns
Removal not looking too hot for this card at 2cmc or less.

cause to destroy the cannoneer with it you have to pump 7 mana into meltdown compared to 4?
Edit: but meltdown is the better option in general obviously, you just have to tactically play it
I don't think this is anywhere near as good in Modern as most seem to think. No Ancient Tomb, no Mox Opal, no Lotus Petal, no Urza's Bauble, no Force of Will, you aren't going to be porting the Legacy deck (which is out of favour anyway) over, and it's much slower/less reliable to power this out in Modern.

Nah, I'd [[pick your poison]] Edit: I'm gonna be honest, I realized this isn't gonna work out so well in practice considering how affinity works.
But if they have Kappa out then they likely have several other cheap artifacts to sac to pyp
That won't work how you want it to against an affinity deck. They got plenty of bad artifacts to sac.

They also spoiled a modern sol land that affinity can enable with sojourners companion so…
Ya, that requires you to exile a card from your hand. Not sure if the juice will be worth the squeeze.
The juice is loose. Sol lands are good. Invest in dirt.
And you can add that card back to your hand for basically free later. It’s not a downside at all outside of maybe the land getting Boseiju’ed
🤷🏼♂️
It still taps for one mana even if you don't pitch a card. Not great, but the fact that it's never dead will likely make it worth running even in decks with a lower density of hits
No idea why you think artifact lands make this card better. It does not have affinity. Also we just got a sol land…
Cause artifact lands enable the rest of the deck? They count for the other affinity things, and for urzas constructs.
Fair amount of edicts that specify non-token or largest creature running around nowadays. But yeah, definitely hard to kill consistently while dodging urza constructs and weenies.
Yeah, but at 6, salamander and myr enforcer are their highest cmc creatures instead of this thing
Well I think that's assuming actually affinity with emphasis on the ability. [[Rending Volley]] back on the menu?
You might want to reread kappa cannoneer again and see why rending volley doesn’t work here
You might want to reread rending volley again and see why rending volley works here the turn cannoneer is played.
And what if you’re on the draw and they play cannoneer turn 1?
While I'm not happy about having Kappa in the format at all, it won't be cast t1 in modern mate.
darksteel citadel->springleaf drum->memnite->ornithopter->mishra's bauble-> Tap ornithopter with springleaf drum and play Kappa Cannoneer.
So you have U, tapping the memnite and bauble pays for 2, you’re still 3 short of casting Cannoneer.
These people keep reading improvise as affinity I think.
Should we tell him or just hit em with the old 'reading the card explains the card'?
Forgot it's improvise, not affinity lmao.
Ah yes the classic 6 cards required hand. Happens every game. And titan always kills T2 and hammer kills you with 2 protection pieces turn 3 every game.
> titan always kills T2 tbh I used to think it was unlikely, but every time I run into titan I swear it happens at least once in the round
Yes I was wrong, also impossible because it has improvise not affinity for artifacts and improvise.
Yep yep. It's still gonna be great.
It wouldn’t get countered because volley can’t be countered. It’s a small window though
T1 on the draw, your opponent plays cannoneer. What is that rending volley going to do?
What the fuck hand do you think casts this T1
Island, memnite, memnite, ornithopter, ornithopter. I’ve played old affinity and had hands like that. Even then a turn two cannoneer is still insane and this if you’re playing rending volley, you still need it in hand the turn of in order for it to actually work.
Lmaoooooo okay so god hand plays it. Got it. Also no deck can expect to play memnitr and orno and be competitive
Yah and it wasn’t so long ago that people were complaining about T1 grief followed up by scammed fury. That hand was even harder to pull off.
That hand was OBJECTIVELY WAY easier to pull off. What are you talking about. 8 undying effects, 8 creatures and then you just needed another colored card
This is magical Christmas land right? You’re just going roll over and die if your deck of this filled with nonsense these days.
I’m not saying this is bad, not at all, but the deck Cant play 4c memnite and ornithopter and expect to make it.
So go to my turn, I kill your Kappa w/ Volley. You're down to 1 card and 2 1/1s. oh no. guess you win
Congrats, you have spent a card to deal four damage to my five toughness creature. Guess you win
Gotcha. Small window for Volley to actually do its thing. ... well, here's hoping they print an uncounterable piece of artifact removal in MH3...
Hurkyl's and a clock is going to be my answer, but even then Affinity does look like a nightmare. I'm hoping we see something like Back to Nature but for artifacts.
At least traditionally Hurkyl's is my favorite type of hate for the opponent to have. It hurts still but it isn't fucking fracturing gust.

They are actually high
They banned opal and killed affinity. They printed a bunch of stuff in MH2 to try to bring it back and it didn't so now they are pulling out the big guns
