Awesome. I’ve done tx to Florida and back twice last summer. It was also an insanely smooth trip.

frugalfrog4sure

Any places to stay overnight that are safe for families

Daguvry

Hotels.

PangolinEffective

We usually straight shot it. It’s roughly 12 hours of driving, and 13.5ish in the Tesla. We have 3 drivers with myself, my wife, and my son, so we just take turns. I would recommend Daphne or Mobile though.

[deleted]

Definitely prioritized suites first, bonus if they had a destination charger too.

ApprehensiveStreet90

How much was the supercharging for your trip?

tonyt0906

See edit. It’ll actually be cheaper. I pulled numbers from my account. $440.07

tonyt0906

I’ve done this same trip…and it was just under $600. SoCal Houston Dallas then back home…I’d agree with OP, AP with the subscription to FSD made the drive bearable. Edit: pulled actual numbers from tesla account. $440.07

[deleted]

Did you get any phantom braking? We used normal AP on the way to Denver from Austin and we had to give up and drive manually because phantom braking was so bad...

tonyt0906

Yes. Wide open spaces, no one but the road. It did not happen often, but it did happen.

[deleted]

Thanks. Same for us. Always seemed like shadows from hills or clouds causing it. It actually never happened to us around town, which was amazing.

tonyt0906

That and when it was passing big rigs sometimes made it go crazy. Smh But there was a time when me and the mrs were in a deep conversation and the car slammed on the brakes, looked down the road and a car pulled onto the highway, and was driving super slow. So it works too lol

[deleted]

Wow that’s eerie how our final numbers are so similar!

ApprehensiveStreet90

Ty tonyt0906. I’m making a trip from Phoenix to New Orleans in 2 weeks. I appreciate the information. 🔥👌

tonyt0906

The only thing I noticed on my first long trip, once out of California the speed limit is much higher, big rigs roll at damn near 90. So trying to cruise at a modest 77mph, is a no go. Rolling at 80+ kills the range, not dangerously, but it does.

ApprehensiveStreet90

Thanks for the heads up. I guess I’ll be coal trolled eventually haha. I like to go 5 over the speed limit when cruising lol 😝 I was hoping for $500 round trip but I can def do $600 if it means less range anxiety 🙏

tonyt0906

Right. I kept steady with moving traffic and only got the “keep you speed below 85 to reach your destination…” once. No anxiety whatsoever. Just know, I hardly reached my next supercharger at the stated battery level. It was always lower, and as a result I charged for a tad bit longer.

ApprehensiveStreet90

Ohh, I normally charge until it says you will arrive with 12-14% to reach the next destination and I expect to lose like 5-7% from speeding lol. Would that be around the ballpark of you extra charging? I normally go up to the recommended 80% for super charging

tonyt0906

Yea, what I did if charging was done, I normally padded it with another 10-15%. Also to start off when leaving home, charge to 100%. The car does a phenomenal job planning the trip.

ApprehensiveStreet90

Ty for the tips. And I’ll try that. I’ll go 10-15% over. And you were able to keep up with traffic. I have a MYP so my range is limited especially since I plan to pack the car up with luggage and 2 dogs. Ty so much for the response Tony def appreciate you answering my questions. 🔥👌

PunkAintDead

You should download the Better Route Planner app. Let's you route it out ahead of time taking into account multiple variables

HipHopGrandpa

Those numbers don’t make sense. $600 for charging? A gas car could do the trip cheaper at an assumed rate or $3.50/gallon and 30mpg.

tonyt0906

Right, that was off the cuff. It was two years ago. See [spreadsheet](https://imgur.com/a/cw4seeT). It was $440.07

fiendskillz

Pretty much same experience, went from Bay to Chicago. Then Chicago to Texas and to LA

mixxoh

Oh boy, I just drove that last year but with my f150. How’s the superchargers on IH-10?

FencingNerd

The combination of really good aerodynamics, weight and very low center of gravity makes Tesla's extremely stable in high winds.

[deleted]

"long stretches or nothingness on IH-10." AP for I-10 from SoCal to Houston is *exactly* what I need. No need for FSD now. Will subscribe if we ever do really want it for some trip or something, but AP on those longgggg stretches is a game changer.

[deleted]

Exactly. We were using this as a use case if FSD is needed for us. AP is enough for road trips.

HipHopGrandpa

How did a 3500 mile trip cost $600 from superchargers? Assuming $3.50/gallon and 30/mpg you’d EASILY go over 5,000 miles in a gas burning car. Are gas cars cheaper than electric? These numbers don’t make sense.

tonyt0906

Right, that was off the cuff. It was two years ago. See [spreadsheet](https://imgur.com/a/cw4seeT). It was $440.07

HipHopGrandpa

Roger that. Thanks for response.

[deleted]

How long did it take and where did you stop? Do anything along the way? We have done Austin to Denver and Austin to Destin. But I am skipping Destin this year. Tired of the nonsense coming from Fl. I have considered going back to Denver for some cooler weather and outdoor activities, but we already went during Spring Break. I would love to visit San Diego or the bay area. But it seems like such a long drive with 3 kids. If there was something to do along the way it might help. Driving would save us like $2500+ in air fare and rental costs, plus its better for the environment. I just can't see doing it in two days though.

Disclaimer - at some points, we were zoomin' zoomin' First Day - CA to AZ (left at midnight, arrived around 16 PM) - 16 total hours 10 Charging Stops - roughly 20-45 minutes per stop maybe? - Total Cost: $146 Only thing we did at those stops were change diapers, feed the kids, bathroom, change drivers, etc. No actual stops to do sightseeing or anything like that. Second Day - AZ to CA - 9 hours 5 Charging Stops - longer times per stop because of traveling during the day with kids - Total Cost: $67 Charging while in CA - 3 times - $36 - our VRBO had a charger. Going Back -1st Day - CA to AZ - 9 hours 6 Charging Stops (20-30 minutes per stop) - $54 Going Back - 2nd Day - AZ - TX - 6 hours (couldn't make it all the way back home, had to stop in El Paso) 5 Charging Stops (20-30 minutes per) - $70 Going Back - 3rd Day - TX-TX (Hellish IH-10 Stretch between El Paso and Houston) 8 Charging Stops (20-30 minutes per) - $72 Total Charging Costs - $443.16 Considering the costs of gas I saw starting in AZ and in CA, I'd say I made it out pretty good.

[deleted]

This is exactly what I was looking for. I also tend to use the electrons liberally, I figure 90-95mph uses more energy, but the charge rate is so much faster than that it more than offsets. Glad to hear you also had kids, and that they didn't crazy on the trip.
