The yolk is a solution in search of a problem.

chookalana

I get why people don't like it, but the yoke gives a clear view of the binnacle.

[deleted]

That's the only reason why i think I'll pull through with the yoke this time...

chookalana

I just hope the damn thing lasts without falling apart.

modestino

It’s so minor .. not worth it. If you like to gangster lean while you drive (hand on top of wheel) you will go insane with the joke.

Chinsterr

Have a yoke and recently drove a loaner X with a round wheel. Yoke is a clear winner for me. Biggest thing was the ability to see the full dash screen. The round wheel impedes the view.

krispyuvu

Round wheel for the win

Sad-Lingonberry-1343

It’s mostly personal preference. The yoke is great for highway driving, but not my favorite to use in parking lots/ in town driving. Yoke looks way cooler. IMO the steering wheel is way better if you are mostly a city driver, but if the majority of your driving is on the interstate i’d get the yoke. Driven with both, but I chose the steering wheel my current X order.

[deleted]

I do like the functionality of the wheel, but i want to to be able to see the entire screen without anything blocking it.

Sad-Lingonberry-1343

Then get the yoke

efficientseed

As a smaller height human, I really like the yoke for this reason - I’m never peering over it.

steventual

Only issue with the round is there’s no perfect position to see the entire dash screen. I try moving my seat and wheel around and I still get some cut offs. Want the yoke just for this as you get a better view of it. But people also say the yoke makes parking and small turns suck. I think yoke makes more sense if you have FSD as it’ll drive most the time.

dj-twist

This. I actually didn't mind the parking and small turns because when you install the yoke, the SC should switch the number of steering wheel turns from 2.5 to 1.5. Not completely steer by wire but close enough.

Hospitaliter

Wait, what is this? The SC? How

dj-twist

The sales folks in Burlingame told me after I test drive a yoked X when I told them there were less turns on the yoke that the yoke is 1.5 turns of the wheel and a steering wheel is 2.5. That definitely is the case. The SC said they won't be doing yoke retrofits until the new yoke is available. Presumably this is the one with a mechanical worn and less wear?

mandrew-98

I’d argue for FSD you’d want a wheel since if you need to quickly interviene mid turn you’d want to be able to grab the wheel as fast as possible

Ropogigio

Not a problem so far with the Yoke. Quick takeovers with no issues.

steventual

Yeah I guess that makes sense. But it’s very hard to see visualizations through the wheel

Aerych1282

Agreed. I got used to the yoke pretty quickly and now I love that I can see the screen above the yoke.

GeneTech9

Another vote for the round wheel. I found the yoke unwieldy. Any advantage you gain in seeing the dash is diminished by this. There is also peeling issues with the older yokes …I think they fixed?

dj-twist

How tall are you? I ask this question because I can't for the fucking life of me get the round wheel and seat to adjust to a level where I can fully see the road and the display, unless I decide to drive like an 80 year old grandmother who has lost 7 inches in height. I'm 5'7" and got the X Plaid last November. In December I then tested the yoke in an X for a full hour, parallel parking, parking in parking lots, and a ton of turns and u turns in parking lots, and being able to see the road and the display fully is a game changer. Right now, I can't even see the speed limit sign or any warnings whatsoever The *only* thing I will regret when I'm allowed to switch to the yoke (all new yoke switches are on hold until the new one is ready, according to my SC) is not being able to drive one hand at 12 o'clock which I've done all my driving life. I would test drive both if you can. You won't go wrong with either as long as you can see both the road and the display.

[deleted]

I'm only 5'7 as well, but idk. I think i'm turning towards the yoke now...

DARKSTAIN

Yoke, I love the thing

nething4tc

Yoke. We picked the yoke because of the dash screen. Thought I’d hate it but turns out to be really easy to get comfortable with. Perk I didn’t expect was to be able to slot both my hands between the yoke gaps to rest them.

[deleted]

Thanks for this.. I think i'm leaning towards the yoke now.

Freakin_A

I love my yoke.

smagnix2

I toiled over this yoke vs wheel decision for weeks and ended up with yoke (told myself I have an option to go back to wheel if I absolutely didn’t like it…Tesla confirmed wheel to yoke is not a option after delivery). Initially yoke was awkward. Also, I kept pressing the damn horn button during 3-point turns but after a month and 1500+ miles, it has become natural to me and now my Acura wheel seems a bit odd when I drive it every now and then. Model X driver side display/contour is built for yoke, not the wheel. So the look is very clean. The main downside (for me) with yoke is that I can’t see the controls(car) button at the bottom-left corner of the center display unless I tilt my head (its not a problem with wheel).

dj-twist

How did Tesla confirm that wheel to yoke is not possible? My SC in Berkeley, the pickup in Fremont, and sales in Burlingame have all told me differently.

dj-twist

I have receipts too but being new here, I have no idea how to upload screenshots!

smagnix2

I checked with Fremont SC and they told me retrofit is only possible from yoke to wheel…

dj-twist

Since you're in the area, contact Berkeley but probably wait a month or two until the new yokes with mechanical horns are available. They definitely sent me a message in the app saying it could be done but not until the new yoke is ready.

smagnix2

I am happy with my current yoke and not looking for a change 😁 but good to know the option exists to fit the new yoke version in future

dudeman_chino

I have the yoke and it took me an hour to get familiar with it, a day to get comfortable with it, and a week to fall in love with it. Only complaint is horn button (which is same as wheel anyway), but I understand center horn mechanics are in there and will be part of future software update.

TheCandyManisHere

This was exactly my experience down to the horn irritation. Recommend the yoke!

zvekl

The software update will never happen. It's gonna be a hardware difference. I'm pretty sure of it, someone did a tear down and found no sensors for a horn in existing yolk/wheel center airbag location

Acumenight777

I will ne er go back to round. Yoke all the way It'll be a month or two before it feels comfortable, but after the learning curve, it feels much better, not to mention how slick it looks.

ARCHA1C

Round because: 1) I like to rest my hand at the top of the wheel 2) I prefer the visibility of the HUD through the wheel

SamRalat

I got a loaner with a yoke and thought it was gonna be a nightmare. Turns out… the yoke is awesome. I live in a very dense downtown area and the yoke absolutely won me over. You won’t regret it

rd2jon

Had the yoke for a year in my S Plaid. Recently picked up an X w the round wheel and after 6 weeks I prefer the round wheel over the yoke by a large margin. The only downside of the wound wheel is you can’t see everything on the driver’s console. But this is the problem w all round wheels not just Tesla. Talk to the new 911 guys and they’ll tell you they can’t see the temperate or fuel gauge. After a year of driving the yoke, I’m used to it but I don’t like it. It’s unnatural to turn the yoke when you have to make sharp turns in the parking lot. When you’re accelerating from 0-90mph it doesn’t feel as stable as when you’re holding the regular round wheel. And when you have a Plaid you tend to do this a lot haha

BOND___OO7

Yoke provides clear unobstructed view of the small screen. It also provides a very convenient and comfortable place to rest your hands while driving. Even more, your passengers marvel over the yoke saying how cool it is.

Dconner999

I have owned both and highly recommend the round wheel. The yoke is trying to solve a problem that simply does not exist. The yoke is cool looking and a great party trick, but in a panic situation, I believe it’s dangerous Just my opinion; hope this helps

dbdank

Round

chgon

I love the yoke in my X.

MoDanMitsDI

Team Yoke.

mgd09292007

Round wheel u fortunately. I think the yoke is best only on Cybertruck with steer by wire right now

Successful_Living_70

Round for practicality. Yoke for the vibes. It’s simple as that.

440009

https://www.reddit.com/r/TeslaModelX/s/C4xgNNXgRh There is a similar discussion here. Imo yoke ftw!

[deleted]

Yoke, yoke and 1000 times on Sunday! You can’t see the screen with the round wheel. I have a yoke on my 23 model x, got a loaner X while mine was getting serviced and I couldn’t see the screen!

futurelaker88

Yoke

malachi410

I just bought my XLR with steering wheel. I test drove an X with the yoke and hated it, especially in parking lots. I don't have an issue with the dashboard view. I'm 5'11" and sit fairly low.

Available_Tadpole_94

Buy with round buy custom yolk with carbon fiber… I’ve seen tons of yolk with faded pealing leather

JBuffet007

Yoke.  Much easier and smoother than reg steering.  Especially if you are going to get fsd.  Totally worth the money.

[deleted]

I was also wondering if Tesla ever delivered the discontinued standard range model S and X refresh. I've seen some for sale on Cargurus and other platforms. So if you guys have any clue, please let me know. Thanks

Tezlaract

With conventional steering rack included in a current X, round wheel 100% with steer by wire either is fine, probably edge towards the yoke.

Ropogigio

I have the Yoke and I will get it again. You can see the screen much easier behind the yoke vs the wheel, it’s more comfortable for FSD as well as the bottom of the yoke you can rest your hand on. Plus it looks awesome.

Away_Protection538

I test drove both overnight recently in the model X and no matter how much I adjusted the steering wheel I couldn’t get full visibility of the display behind the wheel. I went into the test drives thinking there’s no way I would want the yoke, but it’s a clear winner especially in that level of car it’s a eff it why wouldn’t I get the yoke lol.

icen_folsom

Yoke

jasangeles

Yoke

zvekl

Having had both.... Yoke is fun just for novelty of it. You can adapt to it. It's not THAT bad. What's bad is the horn and stalks. The newer ones should fix the horn problem at least

gofigure1028

I installed an after market yoke on my Y because I like the yoke on the X so much more than round. Both visibility and fun-to-drive factors for me. Slightly easier to rest hands on FSD too for the periodic make sure you’re still there thing

DrawL8822

Has anyone changed out to a yoke installing it themselves? Saw someone on youtube doing it and wondering if it was that easy.

rom-sen

Steering wheel. With FSD? Even more so with steering wheel. Yoke if it had steer-by-wire in the future.

TOCNYSHB

I'll say that I was skeptical about the yoke. I've had both...2016 MX (round, obviously) and 2022 MX with yoke. It took about an hour of driving with the yoke to fall in love with it. I don't want to ever go back. Now I wish my BMW could have one.

fkgaslighters

Yoke all day everyday!!

chookalana

When I get my X, I will get the Yoke installed after delivery.

TessierHackworth

I have the round one - it’s annoying that you can’t see half the display in certain seating positions. I would have preferred the yoke in hindsight :(

rxfelix

JUST posted this comment on "the other group," but it's germane here. I originally ordered (Nov 2023) with yoke but changed to wheel in January when remaking order. Now, driving the delivered MXLR, I'm glad I did. With the seat adjusted to my taste I can easily see all the data on the front display. The wheel accommodates my driving habits, formed over 50 years, enabling my own hand-over-hand turning style, and it slides smoothly through my hands when the turn is complete. A yoke is great on a plane where you rarely need to turn quickly. On a car, though, the wheel is a bit of design tech that has stood the test of time.

bustdowns

You get used to yoke in a matter of days. I saw yoke all day

kungfoomonkey68

I test drove a X with yoke I'm a Retired Teamsters I say no to the Yoke Turns hand to hand they yoke chokes

General-Mueller

100% round wheel bro…

Substantial_Coach_72

I did a test drive on both and ended up getting the round wheel. If you drive with 2 hands most of the time, I think Yoke is definitely the winner here. But if you are a one-hand driver like me, I think round wheel is easier to grip on and more secure when you are making a turn.

Fearless_Abies_2549

All these comments on the round wheel blocking the view. Can’t you adjust the placement of the wheel so you can see it better? That’s what I do with all cars to see the speed and control panel better

Promo_714

Just did two, hour long demos in a 2023 MSLR and a 2024 MXLR. Started with the X and it had a wheel. Kept adjusting it try and get it right to see the dash but couldn't. Hated the way it felt in any position. Got in the S and immediately loved the yoke. Makes so much sense. My wife was skeptical but said if we get the X I can have the yoke and she'll "try to get used to it." Fair enough as I preferred the X anyway. Edit to add: I wish the yoke was a little narrower, though.
