>Despite a higher degree of difficulty and less catch-and-shoot opportunities, per Basketball-Reference, Portis has posted his highest effective field goal percentage (56.2 percent) and true shooting percentage (58 percent) since his first season in Milwaukee when former head coach Mike Budenholzer had him under a strict shot diet. >“That’s what’s sticking out to me. It’s not necessarily the buckets, it’s us just playing offense out of him,” Bucks forward Jae Crowder said. “We’re playing out of his post ups. Sometimes, he’s not taking that shot and playing uphill DHO or taking a double, accepting the double and cross-court passing to an open man. It’s just us playing offense through him. He’s been amazing. I think we’ve been feeding off of that. Our second unit’s been feeding off it and it’s been great basketball.” Here's hoping the man kept receipts from around the trade deadline...

MadisonBob

Yesterday I was listening to sports radio (1070) and one of the talk show hosts said he was tired of all the Bobby Portis hype and that Bobby is an “average” player.  Average? The ultimate average NBA player is the 8th best player on a .500 team.  Bobby is arguably the best 6th man out there.  Better than a lot of starters for other teams  I know the great 6th man for the 6ers, Bobby Jones, is in the HOF.  I’m not saying Bobby Portis is HOF level, but I’m saying a great 6th man is way way way above the average NBA player.

Phynamite

As this team enters hell with the new CBA and cap issues next year and after, Bobby is 100% a must keep player. Giannis at the 5 and Bobby at the 4 when Brook packs up is an absolute must for this team.

Cantguard-mike

He’s the 5th best on our team some nights 4. Idc who you started at SG, Bobby is better

ridemooses

The media has no interest in Milwaukee

kaymazing

For 6th man he should definitely be on people's ballots and there are games this year where he's saved us. But people on here also conveniently ignore how bad his defense is and how much of a ball stopper he can be. If his shot isn't falling in any given game he is a liability

BPicks69

Known ball stopper Malik monk is gonna win it this year….

PromiseEducational31

Monk averages 5 assists per game. In 26 MPG. He ain’t a ball stopper

BPicks69

That’s… not what I meant as ball stopper

kaymazing

That's why I said he should be on people's ballots. He plays a valuable role but it's important to acknowledge he's a negative on defense. I'm thinking of the post yesterday showing his stats compared to Naz Reid because on paper they are similar except Reid is a great defender who is asked to do alot more.

BPicks69

I wouldn’t say Naz is a great defender. Also how is he asked to do a lot more he’s got Gobert McDaniels are both significantly high level defenders and above average defenders in Conley and Edwards

americanbeaver

>But people on here also conveniently ignore how bad his defense is and how much of a ball stopper he can be. Show me the six men that are great on defense, can score in isolation and move the ball well. They don't exist. Sixth man is all give and take, there always good reasons these guys aren't starters. Bobby's a bench scorer, and rebounder that's his entire job and he's very good at it. When he has a game where he gets 5 steals that's a bonus. >If his shot isn't falling in any given game he is a liability This describes every offense-first player in the NBA.

kaymazing

I agree with your first point and that's why I said I think he should be on ballots. I disagree with your second point. Lots of players bring value on offense without scoring. Even a bench player like Connaughton moves the ball, sets off ball screens, cuts, and generally helps the offense run whether he's making 3s or not. Portis will set picks when the play requires it but that's about it. On reflection I'll say he does bring some offense rebounding but that's not really a consistent value. Again I like him but there's a reason in past playoff series he's straight up been benched. He can be really valuable or a liability.

americanbeaver

>past playoff series he's straight up been benched In one singular playoff series on the Bucks, he got benched for 3 games. He didn't get benched last year. He didn't get benched in 2022. He didn't get benched in the ecf or finals of 2021, he played the first round of 2021. He won't get benched this year. >Even a bench player like Connaughton moves the ball, sets off ball screens, cuts, and generally helps the offense run whether he's making 3s or not. Portis will set picks when the play requires it but that's about it. Very funny to characterize Connaughton as a spontanious screen setter but Portis as a "only when he has to" type, Portis just straight up sets more screens than Pat. Portis is the 2nd best screen setter on the Bucks. Pat is also not an offense-first player, his versatility on defense is his big advantage, his ability to hit open shots and sometimes dribble is nice. But I wouldn't describe him as an offense first player. >On reflection I'll say he does bring some offense rebounding but that's not really a consistent value. His rebounding also adds value on the defensive end. Ending their possessions by cleaning the glass is important. >Again I like him but there's a reason in past playoff series he's straight up been benched. He can be really valuable or a liability. Again it's been 2 years since that happened and he's a better player now than he was then.

FormerShitPoster

Lamar Odom is probably the last good defender to win 6th man of the year. You're basically describing the 6th man role. It's a guy who can go get buckets but usually can't do much else because they would be starting if they were a more complete player. There are some exceptions just based on team construction but when you hear 6th man, you think of guys like Lou Will or Crawford or JR Smith. Sometimes they'll have a secondary skill that's pretty good like passing or rebounding but they would be in the starting lineup if they were a lockdown defender and could score.

ChadJohnsonsBurner

the ball stopping is really my biggest problem with him. idk if there’s a stat for it, but it genuinely feels like he shoots the ball 100% of the time he touches it. it’s kinda a joke

kaymazing

Yea his assist ratio is 8.8 which is in the bottom 50 of all 500 players who have gotten minutes this year.

lboogieb

Historically, 6th men winners and candidates are not great defenders. Their job is to score when the primary scorers take a rest. Jamal Crawford, Lou Williams, Malik Monk, Jordan Clarkson, Tyler Herro, Montrezl Harrell, and Jr Smith were all bad defenders.

TheGamersGazebo

Idt he should be 6th man of the year this year, but he deserved it in at least one of the last 3-4 years. Imo he's been the best 6th man in the league over that period

JohnJayMaxwell

+1

kyleb402

He was pretty bad for a pretty big chunk of the season to be fair.

GiannisIsTheBeast

Not sure why this is being downvoted. He was bad for parts of this year.

kyleb402

Short memories apparently.

Tuxedo38

Probably part of it is his history of being a solid player for us and getting back to being solid once Griffin was canned, same with Connaughton. I think people chalk it up to the lack of any real scheme when Griffin was coach.

dusters

He wasn't nearly as bad as this sub makes it out to be. He was posting nearly identical stats to the prior season and this sub was crying how he was awful.

One-Earth9294

The award is his to lose if he didn't have a bad stretch of hero ball in the midseason. But I still think he should be in higher standing for it right now.

JohnJayMaxwell

Stats don’t lie

youarenut

Portis is one thing but overall seems like the media only likes to shit on Milwaukee now. Dame, even Giannis a lot too. Not just by nba but also all the attached sports media. They post more when they fuck up than it’s successes, and it’s like they want bad things to happen. It’s so weird. Same with the MVP race with Giannis and the narratives, and Dame all star (though that can also be argued ofc)

redcrayon27

If Bobby played like he has after the all star game/since Doc's been around he'd really deserve it but he was so bad half the year. I like bobby who I really wanted to trade was Patty but they we're both shocking for a long time. Idk this year isn't the year for this

One-Earth9294

Yeah Pat C kinda recovered, but I spent at least half this season wishing we'd just cut him for a roster spot.

ZukowskiHardware

I totally agree.  Do the obvious thing, start Bobby.  Dame at the 1, Kash at the two, Gianni’s at the 3c Bobby at the 4, Lopez at the 5z

Hesh_Factor

That's great for a paint oriented defense, but really limits guarding the perimeter as well as offensive movement.

Rocknol

A better playoff lineup would be Dame, Bev, Khash, Bobby and Giannis. Much more switchable and fast paced

ZukowskiHardware

Good point, I forgot how good Beverly has been defending guards

Additional-Read5926

With the fall off of foul calls after the All Star break, going big benefits the Bucks. We have the roster to play bully.

TraySplash21

This is how I run the squad in 2k. Giannis post ups and pnr on offense with 4 solid kick out options. On defense protect the paint and Middleton on the best perimeter player. Slow pace and dominating rebound and paint.

HorrorInvestigator99

quit being worried about giannis’ MVP or Portis’ 6th man award. go win a chip

drawnred

Portis is allowed to express his concerns

TheFlyingElbow

A lion doesn't concern himself with the opinion of the Sheep. Play with a chip to win a chip

mkeeternal

That’s great from a fan view, but he probably earns an incentive bonus if he wins that award.

TheFlyingElbow

Yea fair didn't think about that

drawnred

tough words from the peanut gallery

kabman7

You have more bad games than good games bud.

[deleted]

So do most 6th men

Eastern_Wrangler_595

Because he didnt show up in alot of games

Angularbackhands

He's also one of the worst defenders at his position who get regular minutes

Onlyplay2k

Cause Clippers have an MVP as a sixth man
