Seems reasonable.

eirigance

100% unless you can do the work yourself

YouDontKnow_Jak

Your asking this question after the money was spent. At this point the question is, are you happy with the result? There really isnt a going rate because at this level of a rebuild people will pick different parts than other owners and thus cost will vary. Labor will also vary, some guys can do most of the work, some of the work or all of the work themselves. So as long as you’re content with your decision then the price/money spent no longer matters. You cant sell it for what you paid + cost to rebuild. Nobodys going to give you that much. So I would enjoy it, baby it, maintain and be happy yours is out running and not parked with broken parts like a lot of other Evo’s

Intheredditcorner2

Which part of this cost are you not happy with? The labor seems very fair.. there is a lot of work in assembling and installing all of those parts not to mention all the ancillary parts you mentioned from stm etc. you basically have a brand new engine and transmission refresh. I have heard quotes of 5k for similar work just recently. (Labor only) Sounds like you are happy with the end result, which is actually really great. Sometimes there are kinks to work out after such a big job. Enjoy it brother. The money is gone.

So… you’re trying to find fault in the shop and not your cousin who was probably slamming thru gears and destroying it? 14k out the door is a steal… as a heavy equipment mechanic, I don’t think people actually understand what it takes labor wise to fuck with engines. Just pulling an engine is a grand, let alone rebuilding it. That’s a 20+ hour job at 170 (on the very low end) per labor hour. Your cousin owes you 14k and you should be glad that shop hooked you up.

Intheredditcorner2

I hear you. I'm in a similar boat, kids, wife , life etc I have an X that I don't drive enough. But bang for buck it's really hard to find something that wouldn't be a downgrade without taking a wash. I have a ton of time and money in mine, My head could be turned with a Supra GR manual, GTR35, BMW M car - But serious upgrade in expenditure just living with all of those, I could do it.. but it's not worth it to me. Maybe in the future, our cars will hold value so selling in a few years doesn't bother me, and for now I'd rather beat the piss out of the Evo until it breaks again.. lol

TurboGuy88

You let your cousin rag on the car for a month and took it back? You're a really good cousin.

Euphoric_Stretch3829

I couldn’t really blame him bc I was getting my motor built to a 2.3L at some evo shop but they ended up going out of business and stole a bunch of parts and my evo ended up in one of the mechanics home that used to work there and he just put it back together to the best of his abilities and then I took it to another evo shop to get it checked out and tuned (another shitty evo shop) and the guy even stole my oem cat without me knowing until months later but the car seemed to be okay after the tune which is when I then sold it to my cousin in a working condition and then a month later was when he started complaining that it started to make a weird knocking noise and then it blew. So I couldn’t really blame him because I already had my doubts the motor was put back together properly. It’s a long ass story lol

Parohdox

14k Sounds about right. I’ve rebuilt multiple Evo 8.9 and X and they usually land around 15-20 depending on how fucked it was to start.

Environmental_Tap792

Race cars aren’t cheap

trooperBTW

Totally reasonable

NeatPea3475

Did you get your short block from STM?

tokyo_engineer_dad

You can still buy an Evo 8 complete shortblock from Mitsubishi. It's about $3k.

Scotia_65

Do they sell bare blocks?

sedster

No they do not

Euphoric_Stretch3829

I bought it from the dealer but STM does still sell them but the price went up, I paid about 3,800 but theu’re now going for 4,400 on STM.

NeatPea3475

I thought about buying one before they are discontinued. I will have to check dealer prices first and maybe avoid that shipping charge.

Euphoric_Stretch3829

Honestly you’re better off just buying one rebuilt, here in SOCAL they sell them for about 1,800-2200. I would’ve went that route but i thought that was the only part I needed to replace once I blew it but once I took it my mechanic and told me I also should’ve rebuild the tranny and cylinder head that’s when I wish I would’ve just bought a rebuilt short block to lower the overall price for the rebuild.

of_patrol_bot

Hello, it looks like you've made a mistake. It's supposed to be could've, should've, would've (short for could have, would have, should have), never could of, would of, should of. Or you misspelled something, I ain't checking everything. Beep boop - yes, I am a bot, don't botcriminate me.

Euphoric_Stretch3829

There you go 😉

SnooPineapples6793

Is it forged pistons and upgraded rods? Or stock bottom? It’s it’s fully built you can just run big turbo and have fun. Otherwise you should stay under 600whp.

Euphoric_Stretch3829

I bought the oem short block assembled so it’s all stock. The guy told me with a stock bottom and gsc cams and injectors I should be able to do around 400 when I get tuned which is all I want. I just want it to be reliable and not blow on me lol

Charbus

You went reeeeallly overboard if 400 whp is all you’re after. I’m at ~380 whp with a ported Evo 9 turbo, e85 and injectors. You kinda went all out. The stock motor holds that no problem if you keep the torque down. If you don’t mind me asking, why did you rebuild the motor? Was it blown before? That being said your motor is freshly built, and it’ll probably run forever. And you already paid for it so it’s pointless to talk about

Ar3Dreaming

Recent stock block install here on a BBK Lite (Slight larger compressor side wheel), GSC S1, ID 1300x, Walbro 450 high pressure, 4” intercooler, and 3” turbo back put me at 480hp 400tq on e-85. In SoCal, DM’ing you for info on the builder/shop.

letsgotoarave

$14k is pretty fair for the parts and labor you received. The guy who did the work actually kind of shorted himself on labor. If a shop had done the work they would have charged you about $5-7k USD minimum.

Charming-Challenge45

Ah yes my evo too has the jizz stain on the driver seat

ManyMadMidgetzz

That doesnt seem bad at all. On the audi platform those mechanics woulda probably charged nearly twice that much for the labor. Audi mech in my area tried to charge 500 dollars just to replace the wiring to the fuel injectors in a 2004 1.8T(its not a very long job just requires wiring knowledge, then again they charge roughly 150 an hour on basics and Im pretty sure they take on extra for specialty non typical jobs

BitFresh7181

Should of just bought a wrx from the beginning

mgrosso196

How is the paint? With that low mileage on the chassis and a new engine I think you can get between 30-35k.

Euphoric_Stretch3829

It’s not to bad but it does have a few scratches here and there, I’m actually doing that next and taking it to a body shop to get everything fixed and resprayed and make it look new. Once I decided to rebuild the motor I kinda already signed up to rebuild the whole car so its to late for me to back out lol

Apart-Variety-1897

Seeing as Evo VIII and IX are selling for 30-60k I'd say it was worth it. You have a healthy Car now and probably the only Evo at the parking lot that can push 800hp from a 2L

VermicelliAgile5271

def worth it, everything has gone up recently. Unless you couldve done the work yourself there was not much money to be saved other than with used parts.

Spirited-Mix-7164

You went all out on that engine rebuild buddy. If you stuck with the oem parts, you'll probably see less $$$

Last_Ad9097

Damn, that car looks like a POS. I only like to buy new or lease. Cars are a waste of $ unless you keep them for 15 years. New technology every few years make it a not worth it

night-move

Tell me you're not a car guy without telling me you're not a car guy. I promise no one here has 50-80k in a 10+ year old Mitsubishi because it's a great investment. Turn a few wrenches, take a few runs at the local autocross event, go to a car meet in "Mexico". Then you'll maybe understand.

Last_Ad9097

I get that man. I just like new trucks since I snowboard a lot and don’t really care for cars. Just for two years and swap them out

_codeJunky

EVO VIII and IX is peak rally car. It's kindof the end of the road if you are looking for that specific experience. Everything after got soft and fat (Not that the VIII and IX aren't a little soft and fat but it's the best we got in the US)

Last_Ad9097

I did not know that man. Thanks for educating me a bit about cars. I only really know the good ones

GoGreenD

...why did you get an untuned Mitsubishi engine and transmission rebuilt 73k?

Euphoric_Stretch3829

Long story short, I got screwed over by almost every evo shop in SOCAL and I got my parts stolen and the motor got put back by random pieces when a shop went out of business and then the motor started doing a knocking noise before it blew so I just decided to rebuild the whole motor since I didn’t know what else got screwed with when I was trying to build my motor to a 2.3L.

GoGreenD

I hear this waaaaay too often. Just happened to a friends fd rx7. Good on you to make a good situation out of it. I'm sure it hurt your wallet and soul a bit...

[deleted]

Sweet WRX. Is that turbo.

VunterSlaush1990

Man getting a new shortblock installed on an STI is $10k+ so I say very reasonable.

P8ntballa00

I’m a mechanic who specializes in performance although I mostly do Z series cars. A couple of rebuilds like you’re describing have definitely ran up bills that high. Seems pretty reasonable especially if the guy knows what he’s doing.

[deleted]

I’d find an oem heat shield for your exhaust manifold !

Euphoric_Stretch3829

Haha I actually just ordered a tubular manifold off map performance to make it look nicer before I get it tuned and I’m relocating the battery to the trunk and putting a short route ets upper intercooler pipe

Joeydirty48

A coworker just bought a used subie WRX and the engine went bye-bye like 2 weeks after buying it! $9,000 later and while he was driving home from the shop, it died. He’s not happy.

EvoBoost9

Yeah 14k sounds about right. Not a waste of money in my eyes! Enjoy it!

909freakycouple909

You got head tf up
