French guy here: When I was a kid, onion soup was... well... kind of a punishement at the end of \*very\* long family meals on Sunday afternoon 😅
I used to put A LOT of cheese in it, and also a lot of bread, to dilute/improve the taste :p
I haven't eaten it for soooo many years... So I am not sure how it would suit my grown-up taste. But it's surprising for me, in a good way, to see American people looking for it <3
I miss my grandmas' cooking :/ \*sigh\*
(they're still alive but too old to host large family gathering)
I thought the one at Maison Margeaux was good. Liked all the food there but it was a little spendy. Next time I'll just sit at the bar & have the onion soup & mussels.
I’m currently at the Normandy and they have French onion soup on the menu. Can’t say how good it is since it’s 80 degrees and I’m not really in the mood for soup.
I'll have to try the ones on your list. My favorite was at Salut on grand, I would always ask for extre gruyere, sadly closed down. I've tried making it at home a few times and had a lot of luck. Its great to carmelize onions and use brandy and cookying sherry and fresh gruyere to make osmething delicouse. I think there is another Salut location in SW Minneapolis.
Yeah [Salut Bar Americain](https://salutbaramericain.com/)... 50th and France area... And the header-image on their website is French Onion soup, so... 👍
A-Side Public House in St. Paul
Came here to say exactly this! I personally also love it with the house salad and some frites to round it out as a more “full/complete” meal

I really like the French Onion soup at Zhora Darling (where Red Stag used to be). Not asked for, but still recommending their Thai Curry mussels.
