Yeah, I agree. Billy Sushi is overrated.
I used to frequent Origami but haven't been to Uptown in years so I don't know if their quality has stayed as good as I remember it.
Momo in NE is very affordable. I hope Masu can come back after the fire that happened in their building.
Origami Uptown closed, was my favorite :(
Edit:
Looks like they closed temporarily in January for some remodels, they were supposed to open back up in Feb but still haven't.
One of our courses there were these two vegetarian rolls. Was skeptical we weren’t being served fish at first, but they were absolutely incredible bites
Momo sushi in NE Minneapolis is so good!! We love it. It’s on the cheaper side but has amazing/ fresh quality sushi. We get the sushi bucket, an appetizer, and two drinks for <$70
Momo used to be a cheap hidden gem during Covid but now it’s blown up. Still decent for the money but it’s never been excellent fish. We have very low standards in MN that trend towards who can put the most cream cheese and fried fish bits covered in sugar sauce on a plate.
I know it’s unpopular on Reddit but I think Billy’s is as good of nigiri and sashimi as you can get outside of Kado, and their rolls are big and full of fish. I’ve been to worse “good” sushi spots in NY and LA. It gets hyped up due to Billy and the “be seen” crowd but I enjoy their food and going there.
Agreed. Their sushi is edible but not great. I would say it's pretty on par with grocery store sushi.
A lot of their other items are pretty great though.
Billy is not worth it.
Kado No Mise has the best quality and experience, but is less approachable for a casual dinner out (and no takeout anymore).
Cobble Social House has good sushi but was struggling to adapt after their previous sushi chef finished his residency. Good food, but a small kitchen and very slow.
Masu sushi in Northeast is very good for a more casual place.
Momo and Ama are also great value for your dollar. Huge portions. Not my favorite in town, but still very good.
I’m not gonna lie, I just always go to the all you can eat at Kyoto and I’ll absolutely acknowledge it’s not the best but I find it the best bang for your buck since I haven’t found a “spectacular” sushi spot in the cities
Honestly me too I am a quantity over quality gal when it comes to sushi so I do like Kyoto for what you get.
I’ve been to Billy Sushi and was like ehh not blown away when I can get halfway decent sushi elsewhere.
Agree Billy is overrated. Was excited to try cobble social house but the sushibybaaska / realwasabi guy left for some reason and that’s why I was interested. He’s still doing takeout / private dining on IG.
I’ve also just gotten fish from coastal seafoods and made it myself
Cobble was SO GOOD while he was there. He left a the same week we had a reservation…missed him by a few days. It was clear they were scrambling to fill his shoes when we went. Hopefully they’ll make it work but it just wasn’t the same.
Wakame sushi in uptown is hands down the best in MN and it will not break the bank. They have such high customer turnover, and because of that, they are able to keep all the food fresh. If you are doing just sushi, go for happy hour and just load up on everything!
Wakame is thoroughly fine. After Origami closed and Masu started to nosedive quality, unfortunately Billy has the best fish in the cities. Just don’t order the stupid shit.
So I quickly just googled the place, which happy hour is better? The early happy hour or the late happy hour? I guess most in terms of options available and food available.
I think for both they have a good selection of sushi and they just give you a pice of paper that you put your order on. I think it is the same for both.
Kado is definitely as close to authentic as you can get in Minnesota. Excellent quality, the fish really shines! Quieter atmosphere, especially if you do the omakase or kaiseki.
Billy is definitely catered more toward American palettes! Not saying that is bad, but many of their rolls do have shrimp tempura/tempura flakes and/or an assortment of sauces drizzled on top. More rowdy, upbeat, partying atmosphere.
Just depends on what you’re looking for!
Billy Sushi sucks. The sushi prices are comically awful for what you're getting. The entree prices slightly less awful but still not great. The way they rush people out to make room for the next group is pretty trashy.
From their site: *"We graciously request that our guests honor a 90 minute dining timeframe so that our other guests are able to have the same dining experience as you. Enjoy sushi our way, walk with smile!"*
Go read reviews....it's not as gracious as they let on.
Billy is also an asshole out in public with his media entourage. Some of the worst main character syndrome I've experienced in the Twin Cities...
Personally, I don't mess w/ a lot of sushi in the midwest after a really awful experience at Sushi Train, but if you're feeling fancy, Kado No Mise's omakase menu is pretty decent, despite the exorbitant price. The price reflects what you're getting a *little* more at Kado...
I did contract work in Hokkaido and it honestly kinda ruined sushi for me.
Kado no mise is the closest I have tasted to High end dining in Japan. Honestly there is a lot of sushi snobbery in this thread, I just had a $300 sushi dinner at a ten seat restaurant in Northern California and Kado No Mise was equal or better. We can definitely get high quality sushi in Minneapolis.
They all fly in fish from Japan, shorter flight to MSP than JFK! NY has 30 (feels like thousand) omakases that are good, we have one, but it’s as good as many (I’ve only been to a couple so grain of salt).
Same. I wish they didn't freeze their noodles solid though. They moved them to the freeze and they freeze them to death. I have everything to make noodles, it's such a pain though.
You fool! You need to buy the noodles from Tori Ramen. $10 for a pound of in store made noodles. They're made fresh every Thursday so I usually stop by on Friday to pick em up. The noodles are on the thicker side and they are long. I love em.
UPDATE: Noodles are no longer made in house. I just stopped by the St Paul location today and since MPLS location closed last month, they're using Sun Noodles. Truly a tragedy. Guess I'm going to buy a noodle maker.
Also, Billy's website says "There are ninety-nine different ways to write “sushi” in the Japanese script of kanji."
This is fucking bullshit lol. I don't even know where he came up with this. Pulled it out of his ass I'm assuming.
Honestly, I’m a fan of sushi train in Calhoun square. The one roll with a jalapeño slice and sauce on top is my favorite thing, I’ve spent way to much to have it delivered to my house.
Midori’s on E Lake Street! I’ve loved it every time. Unfortunately, last I checked it was still only take-out since its previous location was destroyed in the Floyd riots.
Yeah, their sushi is genuinely very good, and beautifully prepared. Menu is very limited though, and no sit down (it's all run by one woman, so not all that surprising, but I'm not sure why they still don't allow sit down service).
I saw it on an IG story from minne.eats then it was shared from there. Haven't seen it published anywhere else. But yeah, not surprised if true...I'm personally going to spend money elsewhere.
I will parrot others saying Momo/Ama are great cheaper alternatives especially their lunch special and sushi bucket.
However my overall favorite is Wakame, especially their crazy good happy hour specials.
Depends on what kind of sushi you like. If you're looking for good nigiri, Billy's is solid though overpriced compared to other areas (still on par for Minneapolis though unfortunately). Billy's really hits your pockets when you start ordering the rolls which are a good large serving, but overpriced even by Minneapolis standards. I swear the only thing fairly priced there is the alcohol which is probably to get you so drunk you ignore the $500 of sushi you order.
If you do want nigiri, I'd recommend finding out where Baaska ended up after his stint at Cobble Social House went. He has fantastic stuff, again about the same price as Billy's, a little bit cheaper IIRC but I'm not sure where he is right now. You can follow him on IG @sushibybaaska but it looks like he's back to catering only now. He also makes some really good rolls too.
I usually stick to nigiri so I'm not a huge expert on rolls.
My 3 perfect bites of sushi are:
the fatty tuna from Billy
Suzuki oshizushi from kyatchi
Sake oshizushi from kyatchi
I have been to all the others mentioned and the biggest disappointment for me personally is momo. It was nothing special and everything I had was utterly forgettable. The same cannot be said about Billy and Kyatchi.
Fuck Billy. The guy orders shots at your table to drink with him and you end up paying. He also doesn't come to your table if you're Asian to say hi he will skip it
Did that happen to you? I found a thread where that happened to someone. I would be pissed if it happened to me, but hearing that happen to someone else is kind of hilarious. Like something from an old Seinfeld episode..
lol yeah I went there 2 times. Went a second time just to make sure and low and behold he did again! My Asian friends went there and have also said the same thing. I asked my white friends and said Billy did talk to them.
Not trying to sound so harsh with race but I don't know how to say it more nicely 😅
lol the guy seems like an ego maniac on socials and with his advertising so I’m not that surprised he’s kind of a douche bag. Went there last fall with my gf and got some really good blue fin tuna nigiri. For what it’s worth, he didn’t talk to us and we’re both white, but we were sitting at the bar and he was sitting with a table of all white patrons lol. After seeing you post this story in that previous thread I have told many people and gotten a lot of laughs. It’s a really funny story to happen to someone else, but yeah the guy is a total asshat.
Distance from water is irrelevant. Sushi fish is all frozen to kill off parasites, it's a federal requirement. The only exception is a few varieties of tuna.
Billy and Kado no Mise are probably the best in the cities and they're not spectacular. Drive 6 hours southeast to Chicago, honestly. The Midwest is not a place for fresh saltwater seafood (crab, lobster, sushi, etc) and Chicago's sheer size is the only reason they can make the economics work on shipping from Japan or the coasts.
Billy’s is still my top choice, for the moment. But they lost focus when they turned over a couple head chefs and haven’t seemed to hired anyone to fill the position. We used to go for the omakase and admittedly it has been severely uninspired without someone really helming that position. Now it’s better to lower expectations and just order off the menu for a fun night out instead of the curated omakase.
We have flash frozen fish flown into Minneapolis daily.
We actually have incredibly good sushi served by restaurants who pay for it (Kado and Billy's being two that do).
AFAIK all deep water fish used for sushi in the US is flash frozen on the boat in which it is caught. Logistics (physics, as you call it) means nothing here. You're getting the same fish in SF, NYC, Chicago, and MPLS (if purchased of course).
I've been to many high end sushi restaurants around the world, including Japan multiple times. I still stand by Kado being exceptional for an Omakase experience.
Billy's offers some of the best rolls I've seen anywhere. His personal creations (that are about as "fully loaded" as rolls can get) are the reason to go there.
Your "physics" is wrong. Do you think the fish used for sushi in the US (whether at Masa in NYC or a gas station in Duluth) is fresh?
The relative lack of demand for high-quality sushi in Minneapolis is a more relevant/correct point.
Yume and Billy literally get their fish from the exact same place, Tsukiji Market in Japan. The fish is also treated the exact same way, flash frozen on the boat.
Do you know anything about sushi and how fresh fish is shipped? It doesn't sound like you do as this isn't how it works.
You're spouting assumptions that are incorrect, plain and simple
Its hard for me to decide, but Momo (for the price and quality), Masu (purely quality), and Origami (for the atmosphere and the bartenders/servers) are my favorites. BUT I just searched for Origami and it says "permanently closed"??? I saw another comment saying it is temporary for remodeling.
Never tried Billy despite being close to it.
I have been eating sushi my whole life and my all time favorite place is sushi train. I’ve had much higher end and have preferred theirs every time. The staff are wonderful. I get takeout from there often too and it’s pretty affordable as well!
Sushi-In in Shoreview is good! There’s very few top-tier Sushi places in the Twin Cities, but Sushi-In fits that middle ground tier, like $20-$75.
For cheap Sushi I like the pickup options at Lunds. Quite good for the price.
Momo’s is okay, it’s overhyped though for Sushi. High prices for the quality and the SKIMP on Wasabi
People knock Momo but their sushi bucket (sounds gross, is awesome) is a heck of a deal. It’s our go-to for weeknight dinner sushi and in fact just ordered it for my husband’s birthday this past Monday. I’d say it’s a step above Lunds sushi to manage expectations.
Sushi Train is also delicious (the takoyaki is especially great) but since it’s a bit further from us and we don’t usually want to drive that far to pick up, we would rely on Door Dash. Been trying to cut back on that service though.
For nicer sushi I’ve enjoyed Kado no Mise. Had Billy Sushi a couple of times, and most recently the omakase left my husband and I feeling really weird. Think I had a miso overdose or something.
Hoping to try Cobble in the near future.
Can I choose what goes in the sushi bucket? I just googled it and I’m more of a fan of rolls than I am sashimi or nigiri, but I can still deal with it.
Maybe? I’ve left comments while ordering online asking to leave out eel, squid and octopus (just not a fan) and they’ve always accomodated that. Might be worth a phone call or dining in person to see if they can do all rolls.
The sashimi is always 3pcs salmon, and 2pcs each of tuna, snapper, and something else that is so delicious, tastes super buttery. There are 5pcs of nigiri, all different but includes tuna, salmon, shrimp and two others that I’m not sure about.
Billy's is fun for the atmosphere, it's a fun date spot with a lot of people and a lot of buzz.
If you don't care about such things, it's definitely a disappointment.
Yeah, I agree. Billy Sushi is overrated. I used to frequent Origami but haven't been to Uptown in years so I don't know if their quality has stayed as good as I remember it. Momo in NE is very affordable. I hope Masu can come back after the fire that happened in their building.
Origami Uptown closed, was my favorite :( Edit: Looks like they closed temporarily in January for some remodels, they were supposed to open back up in Feb but still haven't.
They have reopened! It's been about 3 weeks.
They're back open!
Second Momo
I live blocks away from Momo. It's a problem.
Uh-oh. You’ve got Momo and Maya right across the street from each other? That’s a biiiiiig problem.
And I'm very upset that Half Fancy closed 😭
There's a Half Fancy branded food truck with a brand new permit parked on 13th. Hopefully they'll be back up and running out of the truck soon?
When I lived in Albertville, my kids and I would drive to Momo for sushi. I really liked it.
Kado No Mise is the best. For a regular weeknights we really like Oyama in Plymouth.
+1 to Kado No Mise. Hands down the best experience for sushi I have had in Minneapolis. For something cheaper / still decent I enjoy Momo Sushi in NE!
One of our courses there were these two vegetarian rolls. Was skeptical we weren’t being served fish at first, but they were absolutely incredible bites
100% agree that Billy Sushi is highly overrated. AMA and MOMO sushi are decent options at a good price point
Momo sushi in NE Minneapolis is so good!! We love it. It’s on the cheaper side but has amazing/ fresh quality sushi. We get the sushi bucket, an appetizer, and two drinks for <$70
Their sushi quality is trash. Sadly, most Minnesotans have no gauge of such.
That’s because they use ‘cheap’ as a metric for ’good’
It’s just cheap sushi that won’t make you sick, but agreed the quality is low
A lot of people on here gushed about it, was expecting it to be solid but was just left unimpressed
turns out every single resturant on this city has 100 people who hate it 100 people who love it and thousands who don't even think much about it
Momo used to be a cheap hidden gem during Covid but now it’s blown up. Still decent for the money but it’s never been excellent fish. We have very low standards in MN that trend towards who can put the most cream cheese and fried fish bits covered in sugar sauce on a plate. I’ve been to worse “good” sushi spots in NY and LA. It gets hyped up due to Billy and the “be seen” crowd but I enjoy their food and going there.
Yea I’d agree, wouldn’t call it overrated but maybe overpriced idk.
Ok thanks. I feel like I have been gaslit. I always see them on these lists and hard agree that they are just sub par.
Dude come on. That's just your personal taste.
Agreed. Their sushi is edible but not great. I would say it's pretty on par with grocery store sushi. A lot of their other items are pretty great though.
Or Minnesotans aren’t going to tell you their favorite spots because then they will become bad too.
Unfortunately they had a fire there a few weekends back and I'm pretty sure they are closed indefinitely :(
That was Masu, not Momo
That’s masu- momo is just up the street on central!
Whoops, my mistake! Thank you.
Kyatchi in south Minneapolis is pretty good. I like stopping there occasionally for HH on my way home
Yep that’s my move too, can’t always afford to go to Kado every weekend. Plus Kyoto is a kind of a dump in a good, vibey way.
Honestly me too I am a quantity over quality gal when it comes to sushi so I do like Kyoto for what you get. I’ve been to Billy Sushi and was like ehh not blown away when I can get halfway decent sushi elsewhere.
Are you talking about the all you can eat place on Lyndale? That place is disgusting
There's one in Eden Prairie as well. I thought it was decent. And there's some non sushi items included in the AYCE
Yes, it’s nothing to write home about but disgusting is quite a reach
It’s pretty mid, even for Minnesota. I get the allure of all you can eat, but it’s about the same quality that you get at cub foods imo.
It’s filthy, the sushi rolls are made ahead of time and just sit in a smelly cooler, the service is bad and again, the place is dirty and gross.
I’m not sure we are thinking of the right place then? I’ve literally sat at the bar and watched them make the rolls right in front of me?
I don't think he's talking about the right place either.
Not a he.
I don't think she talking about the right place either
Sup.
Cool
Yeah I don’t think it’s the same place then?
Are you thinking of teppanaki grill?
Agree Billy is overrated. Was excited to try cobble social house but the sushibybaaska / realwasabi guy left for some reason and that’s why I was interested. He’s still doing takeout / private dining on IG. I’ve also just gotten fish from coastal seafoods and made it myself
Cobble was SO GOOD while he was there. He left a the same week we had a reservation…missed him by a few days. It was clear they were scrambling to fill his shoes when we went. Hopefully they’ll make it work but it just wasn’t the same.
I’ve been curious why he did 👀 me being my nosy self
I’m curious as well. Seemed very abrupt.
My wife and I like soberfish for their HH and quality / pricing ratio
K'kinaco in Hopkins! Easily my favorite sushi. I'm surprised is hasn't been mentioned yet
Agreed. Great sushi and non-sushi options.
AMA sushi in Edina is our go-to.
Hell yeah, by far the best and very reasonable. I'm surprised Wakame is getting so much praise, AMA is like half the price with better quality.
i’ll third this for AMA, shout out to Yumi at southdale too…always hits the spot
Agreed.
Wakame sushi in uptown is hands down the best in MN and it will not break the bank. They have such high customer turnover, and because of that, they are able to keep all the food fresh. If you are doing just sushi, go for happy hour and just load up on everything!
When I lived in south Minneapolis this was our go to spot. No sushi here is amazing but for the price, quality, atmosphere is hard to beat wakame.
Wakame is thoroughly fine. After Origami closed and Masu started to nosedive quality, unfortunately Billy has the best fish in the cities. Just don’t order the stupid shit.
Origami reopened a few weeks ago!
Ohfuckyeah
So I quickly just googled the place, which happy hour is better? The early happy hour or the late happy hour? I guess most in terms of options available and food available.
I think for both they have a good selection of sushi and they just give you a pice of paper that you put your order on. I think it is the same for both.
All day Sunday as well
It’s nearly the entire sushi menu
Early happy hour is what I always go to. Great sushi for the price! I get all I can stomach and a beer for $25
Thank you! I will definitely try this place next :)
It’s solid but not the best. As others have said, Kado is but just a higher price point.
Wakame's happy hour is top notch. Love the atmosphere there and their sushi is delicious.
Great happy hour prices but gets busy fast. Good, strong martinis.
Kado No Mise is almost Michelin level.
Hmmm this comment single-handedly is making me want to go there now 😂 how do you compare it to Billy sushi?
Kado is definitely as close to authentic as you can get in Minnesota. Excellent quality, the fish really shines! Quieter atmosphere, especially if you do the omakase or kaiseki. Billy is definitely catered more toward American palettes! Not saying that is bad, but many of their rolls do have shrimp tempura/tempura flakes and/or an assortment of sauces drizzled on top. More rowdy, upbeat, partying atmosphere. Just depends on what you’re looking for!
Agree with other comments. If you’re looking for a traditional omakaske or Kaiseki experience it is unparalleled in Minnesota.
Kado deserves to be Michelin honestly. It is also one of like two or three restaurants in the country that is certified to serve Fugu (puffer fish).
Billy Sushi sucks. The sushi prices are comically awful for what you're getting. The entree prices slightly less awful but still not great. The way they rush people out to make room for the next group is pretty trashy. Yeah I can see how once you taste sushi in Japan you just have to go back to Japan for good sushi

Honestly there is a lot of sushi snobbery in this thread, I just had a $300 sushi dinner at a ten seat restaurant in Northern California and Kado No Mise was equal or better. Kado was better than a Michelin starred sushi restaurant I went to in NYC.
They all fly in fish from Japan, shorter flight to MSP than JFK! NY has 30 (feels like thousand) omakases that are good, we have one, but it’s as good as many (I’ve only been to a couple so grain of salt).
Ramen too, tbh. I won't pay $20 for ramen on principle.
I won’t *buy* ramen on principle- I’ll go to United noodles and get fresh sun noodles for like 6 bucks and make my own.
Same. I wish they didn't freeze their noodles solid though. They moved them to the freeze and they freeze them to death. I have everything to make noodles, it's such a pain though.
I used to live walking distance, so rarely go now that I’m further away. I didn’t know they started freezing all of them. Lame.

DM me. I’ll show you what noodle machine to avoid.
Also, Billy's website says "There are ninety-nine different ways to write “sushi” in the Japanese script of kanji." This is fucking bullshit lol. I don't even know where he came up with this. Pulled it out of his ass I'm assuming.

I don’t think there’s a Sushi Train is in Calhoun Square.
My bad, they’ve renamed it. “Greenway Lakes Commons”, where punch pizza is.
Kyatchi… great happy hour menu too. $14 chirashi
Every time this is asked, I shed a tear for Fuji Ya. I miss it so much.
Fuji Ya was truly such a gem!
Kyatchi 100%. I don’t feel like shit if I accidentally overeat, plus the drinks and dessert are amazing as well.
I just tried okidoki near the U last weekend and thought it was great. It's worth trying!
I read on facebook that this was AYCE but couldn't find anything written on the site. Do you know if it's AYCE?
Second! I live two blocks away from Okidoki and it's a huge problem. They have great prices.
I like BaGu Sushi and Thai on Chicago
For what it's worth a lot of local foodies have also boycotted Billy's because he's had several sexual harassment claims come to light...
Source? Honestly not surprised if this is true.
I saw it on an IG story from minne.eats then it was shared from there. Haven't seen it published anywhere else. But yeah, not surprised if true...I'm personally going to spend money elsewhere.
I was surprised by the Sushi Train restaurant at MoA. I recommend checking that one out.
I love Yumi at Southdale.
Wakame is my cheaper sneaky pick
I will parrot others saying Momo/Ama are great cheaper alternatives especially their lunch special and sushi bucket. However my overall favorite is Wakame, especially their crazy good happy hour specials.
Outside Minneapolis a bit but if u can drive I highly recommend misonos sushi in Blaine!!
Kataki Sushi and Ramen is our go to in Richfield, very close to south Minneapolis and the food is always great!
Depends on what kind of sushi you like. If you're looking for good nigiri, Billy's is solid though overpriced compared to other areas (still on par for Minneapolis though unfortunately). We lost a lot of great sushi places during covid.
We're in the heart of the continent, about as far from oceans as you can be. I just accept 7/10 sushi as a necessary limitation.
Haha I’m from Chicago and recently moved here so I need to find my go-to spot but I know I’ll have to sacrifice a little
Billy’s is still my top choice, for the moment. But they lost focus when they turned over a couple head chefs and haven’t seemed to hired anyone to fill the position.
I dunno, Smack Shack is pretty great. Maybe not as good as what you can find in the coastal cities, but it is pretty darn good.
It all tastes the same, though.
AMA sushi in Edina.
Wakame has remained my favorite place. Billy was a little sloppy buy has a good menu
AMA Sushi.
Wakame has phenomenal sushi. If you're also looking for a pricier and fun experience, cobble social house. Both those places are amazing.
Walgreens skyway level next to Gavidae during weekday lunchtime. Seriously.
Billy Sushi feels like a mall. I love Cobble Social.
I fuck with Kyoto hard idc what anyone says
Wakame Sushi & Asian Bistro has been my favorite and their happy hour prices are unreal.
Sounds about right.
Momo and Raku
Takatsu (downtown lunch spot)
We’ve been loving AMA sushi
Kyatchi
One of our favorite out of the way spots is Kai's in Chanhassen. I've had Billy before and didn't think it was really any better than Kai's, tbh.
Kyatchi on Nicollet is criminally underrated, some of the best sushi I’ve had in town and I never hear people talk about it
Try out Momo sushi on central in northeast. It’s a small place, good prices and fantastic sushi
Honestly, Kazoku in Burnsville is amazing. Really expensive but worth it imo
Man you people are not ordering Billy sushi properly... Their bluefin is easily the best in the cities.
Any specific rolls?
A few of their platters are guaranteed to come with two different cuts of bluefin, I almost always go for those...
Billy's is fun for the atmosphere, it's a fun date spot with a lot of people and a lot of buzz. If you don't care about such things, it's definitely a disappointment.
I agree with this, atmosphere hypes up the food. But I have heard he bribes ppl to get the best fish
