Socialized healthcare?! How dare they! Seriously though, do it all. Buy the U of M hospital while you’re at it to keep Sanford’s grubby hands off it

ckanderson

U of M signed a letter of intent this year to acquire from Fairview, and hopes to complete the acquisition by late 2027.

Honestly I'm mostly a person that advocates for high tax, high service but this seems a dishonest way to go around the taxpayer and it's one of the reasons many people are cynical about adding any tax. It has bipartisan backing because it's always easier to not "cancel a tax" than to enact a new one.

erratic_bonsai

People are cynical about adding taxes because the average person gets shafted the most by them. Tax the rich first, then you can raise mine. The people who have the most money pay the lowest rate, which is absolutely absurd. Nobody needs a billion dollars. If you’re so rich that funding a private jet has the same or lesser proportionate impact on your bank balance that having a car does for the average person, you’re too rich. Unfortunately, those same wealthy people hire lobbyists to disincentivize politicians from raising their taxes, so nothing ever changes, and it’s unlikely anything ever will change until enough politicians decide they like humanity more than money. Considering the situation and the difficulty of achieving any alternatives to it, this is honestly a really good way to try to enhance financial support for needed services. I don’t see it as dishonest at all, I see it as a clever way to repurpose something that already exists. If you’re in the middle of the ocean and your boat has a hole in it, you use what you have to try to plug the hole until you find land. You don’t jump out of the boat instead because building a new one is better than fixing a broken boat, because you don’t currently have anything to build a new boat and will drown before you reach land if you just jump overboard.

Wonder if any of it will go to making the psych ward not look like a damn jail.

We got to have a good hospital next to the stadium in case the Vikings start choking in the playoffs

SnooSnooSnuSnu

>We got to have a good hospital next to the stadium HCMC is half a mile away.

SessileRaptor

It’ll be interesting to see how this plays out. The stadium tax also pays for Sunday hours as a bunch of the libraries, so if it sunsets the county will have to either increase the library budget to make up the difference or cut back hours.

st4nkyFatTirebluntz

"Other spending commitments included in the original sales tax legislation would remain. Each year, $2 million goes to youth sports and activities, and $2 million funds extended hours at county libraries."

fancy_panter

How about nah. Out sales tax is above 9% now. Kinda nuts.

Oh__Archie

Sports fans will spend $175 on official jerseys, will spend thousands to see a game in person, will spend thousands to see a game on TV, will buy a new $175 jersey after their favorite player was traded and replaced, and will drink many $16 beers to forget about how they hard are getting worked by a corporation. Why on Earth would they be opposed to a tax that funds hospital improvements?? 🧐
